I watched the whole thing without looking at a comment and didn’t blink, it was exactly as I would have expected. I thought you came across well if anything. I never watched the Titleist video but thanks for braving up to it as it’ll hopefully end the bore off comments about it. You made a product you weren’t happy with and you removed it- that’s where the story should have started and finished.
Unfortunately the age old story of cheering someone to the top, only to then knock them when they get there rings true.

To be completely honest, I really liked the Titleist video. I found it to be refreshingly honest as opposed to most people at a fitting talking about how great/awesome the new model is (even if they dont like it). You didnt have your best swing that day and I prefer that as well. Everyone gets great results when they are swinging well. I want to known how a club performs when im not at my best and I appreciated the honest feedback.

    • @JustaMountainbiker

He went to a fitting and decided to hit the ball in a completely different way than he always does and blamed the material when he couldn’t perform.

@@JustaMountainbiker I was curious about the fades but I thought he might be in the process of making a swing change. We're all free to form our own opinion but I didn't get the, "I'm all that" attitude at all. I thought it was honest feedback rather than the usual influencer hype video.

I didn’t think it was that bad either, but I also don’t think it was the video itself that people cared so much about, but more the fact it was removed and then never spoken about like it was a taboo subject. By Rick and his team doing that made it out to be a lot bigger than it needed to be. He summed it up perfectly in this video. Rick, I did not see your Titleist video however I have watched a lot of UA-camrs get fitted by employees of a manufacturer. Their job is to maximize performance and sell clubs, so there is going to be some hype which can (and does) include excitement for an increase ball speed of 2mph, improved launch angle, etc. etc. These data are crucial for the fitter to maximize performance; however at the end of the fitting the question is how much closer to the green is the ball and at what cost? A year or so ago I saw an impressive, sophisticated fitting with a new $600-700 dollar driver, in the end the highest performing shaft gained less than 5 yards with an up charge of $700-800. I was impressed with the fitter he asked the client “you need to decide if the gained yardage is worth the expense?
Rick, your objectivity is much appreciated.

I play a daily stableford game with a bunch of older club members throughout the week, and I’ve seen a couple who still game Ping Eye 2s from the 90s and do quite well with them. I don’t think they were getting a lot of check with their shots onto the greens, but they managed to make them work. As a broke college kid backs in the 90s, that was always my dream set, so that’d be my pick for favorite irons for nostalgia’s sake.
As for the replacing of wedges, I replaced my last 58 degree in less than a year, but I play 250+ rounds of golf per year, and the 58 is the club I spend the most time with warming up prior to the round. I could definitely see the spin degradation over that time.

Rick, I cannot express how much I enjoy and appreciate your channels. HIT is great and I value your thoughts on various clubs. I think I like the negative / questionable reviews the most because I can take certain clubs off my list to try (there are so many that if we tried them all, a fitting would never end). On the other hand, you seem to like a lot of clubs. So while negative reviews (too costly for the limited benefits, not as forgiving as advertised, etc) eliminate some sets, the many positive reviews leave me confused. So many to choose from with minor advantages based on my skills or lack thereof. Would love to see you take more definitive stances or narrow it down to handicap range or swing speed range or slicers or hookers or distance, etc. That way, if you say XYZ brand are fantastic clubs for this specific kind of player at least we can narrow our search a little better. I understand that all the top line manufactures (Taylormade, Calloway, Titleist, Ping, etc.) all make good clubs but there MUST be one that tips the scale when it comes to forgiveness at a 95 MPH swing speed for example. Same thing on shafts. With a narrower range of brands for specific statistical players (not just handicaps), your recommendations would carry far more weight. Again, I subscribe to all of your channels and enjoy each of them.

Honestly surprised that you read the comments. I thought it was just your team who does this for you. Also surprised that it affects or affected you. I guess I had this idea that you’re just living the life when you are also the same as us, just better and richer😄
I do wish you’d bring back the break 75 videos. Either way, more power to you! 👏

Rick, I fully support your decision to take the video down of your Titleist fitting. I recently went with my son to a golf store here locally for him to get an iron fitting. We were enjoying the day until while he was hitting balls and getting fitted to an iron set, I overheard a couple employees talking. What I overheard was disturbing to me and even though I said nothing, I had to walk out of the store. I did not say anything to my son about it because he was so excited to be doing this for himself for the first time ever. But I needed to share this with you to see if this is something that maybe you have heard of in the past.
So what I heard was two employees discussing which two companies were giving the employees a kick back (extra money) for recommending their products. Now to me, at that point sours the whole experience and explained to me why my son was not able to get the irons he was hitting the best in the simulator numbers wise. Which was the Wilson Dyna power Forged irons with Project X LS 5.0 iron shafts, which he was getting the most distance and the least amount of dispersion and still maintained good stopping power. But the two brands they discussed (TaylorMade and Callaway) are what they talked him into, and both were with just standard shafts that they had in store stock. Should I have said something or do I leave this alone. I just feel bad that my son has been wrongfully treated, which breaks my heart and has soured my view of two brands that I ultimately respected all my years in golf. I have always respected you opinion Rick and your reviews, so I could really use your opinion here to know what I should do in this situation. Shiels Army Always!!!!!!!

I never actually seen the titleist video but certainly heard all the controversy. I am glad that you remain impartial when doing reviews and like you said, the channel was built on that trust. The titleist reps aren’t impartial and it’s hard to put your honest opinions across to the viewers when they are in the video too. Doesn’t sound to me like you were being rude. I’m sure you were just trying to protect yourself and the viewers from being misled. Keep up the good work from a fellow RS 👍🏻

Why would you have hard feelings towards Titleist or the fitter? You basically walked in and said "I'm hitting a fade" when you can't go 5 holes without a rope hook.

Spot on. For a golf channel , it’s actually quite funny that Rick never discusses his swing , technique, etc. I’m sure they’ve done the analysis and found that the majority of viewers aren’t interested in technical content.
I think the Titleist video particularly frustrated genuine golfers as he completely wasted a fitting opportunity that most people could only dream of.

I enjoyed the "Raw Rick" in the Titleist video, kind of felt like we were a quiet observer at the fitting. Gave a good idea of what you could get for buying a service like that as well. Agree that you didn't come off in the most positive way but I didn't think you were out of line. You seemed just a bit frustrated with not seeing the ball flight you wanted on the day. Appreciate the content as always, Rick and team!

I think addressing it was the right thing and now hopefully everybody can chill out and get back to enjoying the cracking content.

I'm too old and set in my ways to have lessons now but I agree, Lessons first! then buy clubs. 2 years ago I bought a Callaway Rogue driver and 3 wood (£300 for both). Huge difference to distances from my old clubs but no difference to the direction the ball went often. I have only just replaced my old irons with a set of Callaway X Hot irons (5-9 +P &S for under £300) Again huge difference to distances but my golf score hasn't changed immediately. Lessons, lessons lessons. Oh, and thank you for putting the video thing to bed. 👏👏👏👏

So I didn't watch the fitting video. But I completely respect trying to protect yourself from the fitter because at the end of the day they're trying to sell you on a product. And Rick is right. They're meant to hype you up even if you don't hit great shots. They need you to feel like you're hitting the ball better than you were with the other drivers. And you need to put up that barrier between yourself and the fitter because you know it's best for you and only you. Especially if you know the numbers mean and if you know what your swing is. Respect for answering the question too!

OMG…he addressed the Titleist fitting video!!! Yes, there were a ton of negative comments because it was negative. Kudos to owning up to how you acted, especially to the fitter.
But you should be you during the fitting. That’s what made it feel so uncomfortable. So which is the real Rick??? The one at the fitter or the edited one in your safe studio? No…be the real you always. You’ll earn our respect and trust back.

Best irons Wilson Fg 49 from around 1989? Think they were designed with faldo to get him to move from mizuno. But never changed. Amazing butter irons, the feel and workability was off the charts. Used them for over 20 years but then they started to break down . Miss then to this day

I’ve been watching you for the last 4 years I believe. I honestly enjoyed watching your Titleist fitting video, 1. You’re serious about the equipment regardless of brand, 2. You showed a side that, let’s be honest, most of us have and 3. You’re an independent reviewer. Finally get to see Rick be picky, be serious and I want to see more and I’m sure others will. People need to stop being so sensitive, your doing your job, there is those of us that appreciate it. It gave me a better idea of how to approach a fitting and somethings to watch for also. So many of UA-cam reviewers say get fitted, but not a lot cover what to look for, how or what questions to ask, and how to prepare for one. I have enough of a hard time hitting with new people around, let alone be 1 on 1 with a person judging my swing to make sure he can help me get the right equipment.
