The came out great. When I saw it coming towards the setting sun and in that dark background I knew it was going to be special. I have to get that shoot manual video out soon. That shot required you to really underexpose and work the light.
Thank you Scott, (and Heidi) for a great video and some superb images, just love the later ones with the very dark background. Man that Northern Hawk Owl is a stunning bird, nothing at all like that where I live in the North of England. Very best wishes for Christmas and I look forward to seeing what you get up to in 2025
Absolutely fabulous stuff from both of you! The thing that really knocked my socks off was the black bird shaking itself at about 5:19. That's the kind of shot that if I ever got one, I'd probably say, "OK, I've achieved perfection," and sell all my camera gear. Hope you have a great Christmas!
The Hawk Owl pictures are amazing! Thank you for all the 2024 videos (Alaska is truly an incredible place). I look to the 2025 videos. Happy Holidays! 😃
Yup. it's Sunday......thanks for sharing Scott. Love the Hawk Owl sunset images, cool. Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year to you and yours !! Cheers,
I have a Canon Ef 300mm f/2.8L USM IS II version lens. It may be ambitious, but Canon has taken the sharpness and quality to the next level in its 2nd series tele lenses. Lightness and a few updates came for the next models.
I love the 300 2.8 MKII. I used a friends ages ago and its why I bought the 500 f4 mkii actually. From the first shot I took with the 300 I was amazed.
@@r2hildur The MKII lens are actually the same exact optical quality as the II's .They just shifted the weight back towards the body and reduced some component weight. The RF lenses are the exact RF lens with a RF adapter built in which infuriates me some. Of course the 500 MKIII or RF never came out. grrrrrrr
Great video Scott, especially the Hawk Owl footage and images. Thanks for all your videos and photo tips over the last year, I have learned a lot from you. Happy Holidays and great shooting in 2025!!
Very nice but I don't know how you handle that cold weather. Down here on the gulf coast we've had a few cold fronts push through here already and when I've been out in the cold winds coming on shore I've been thinking I need a ski mask. Never heard of Northern Hawk Owl before but thought your sunset photos of the bird were exceptional. 👍👍
The wind usually isn't a factor in South Central Alaska unless you are out on the ocean or the Spit. Now the interior....ooof that cold. -50 and high winds.
I’ve long lusted over the Canon super-tele primes but they are difficult to justify expense-wise if not able to depreciate them as a business expense. 😢 Fortunately there are lower cost alternatives like the RF100-500mm and 800mm f/11 I opted for with a pair of R6mkII when upgrading my gear to shoot birds from the back deck of my house along the ICW in North Carolina. I went with Canon for DSLR with 20D back in 2004 and with it bought the 10-22mm, 24-70mm f/2.8 L, and 70-200mm f/2.8 L. What I quickly realized when starting to shoot 30fps Clog3 video at ISO 800 on the R6mkII was that it was much more convenient to use those old EF lenses with a VND EF-RF converter that it was to use ND filters on the end of the long lens so I will shoot with my RF100-500mm on one my R6MkII bodies for stills and used the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 with the 2x converter I have with the VND. The decrease in IQ due to the 2x teleconverter isn’t as noticeable in videos as it is in stills.
@ Yes, that is tempting, but that’s still a considerable chunk of change for a lens that wouldn’t significantly out perform those I already have the way I use them which is posting slideshows I create in DaVinci Resolve on my UA-cam channel as a retirement avocation. I’m happy Canon also makes alternatives like the 100-500mm and the even more affordable 800mm f/11. The 100-500mm is I think the ideal “walking around” lens for wildlife. I put a Kirk foot on it and hang it via a Kirk QD connector on my hip with the 800mm, also with the Kirk foot and QD on the other hip. 😊
Nice shots Scott! I'm wondering how you determine the distance to your subjects. Is it an estimate (by 'guessing'), or do you use a tool in Lightroom or something? Keep the vids coming, have a great X-Mas!
Those are some amaaazing shots! I am glad , you used EF500mm M2 and i could see how it performs with R5 M2, coz i am actually thinking of getting one for myself, but arent sure if i should go Sigma 500mm f4 instead? (quite a price difference) What is your opinion?
Those last shots of the owl in the light ❤

Ястребиная сова красивая птица !!!
Its one of my favorites
Great stuff! Happy Holidays to you!! You are able to share the distance to the subject, is that a feature of the camera?
Released a video on just that on Christmas Eve.

Used MKII's can be down in the 5k range anymore.

Go Canon. The AF is going to work much much better going native. Next Sundays video will showcase the lens again.
