      Honestly, what he says actually lives up to what happened. He didn't want hype, he just wanted to make the game of his dream. He talked about releasing it and updating it for a long time and they are doing that. Sean was blinded by his vision and that's okay. The game is in a great state today and they are still making the game of their dream.

    This video makes me feel that Sean Murray is one of the few special people that can create something very special. Nothing against Ted Price, but he seems to be a person that plays it save. He works in a big company and makes big games that secure that he can live from his work. That's totally fine and actually most people are like that, myself included. Sean Murray tries to do things not many dare to even try. He tries to do stuff differently, he takes risks. And No Man's Sky really has the potential to be the next Minecraft (meaning the next big thing made by a small team). If he sticks to it and even keeps updating it after it is released it can be a massive hit. And I think there is also a big possibility that Sean Murray will indeed be remembered for creating a groundbreaking game.

      fabrizzio Aldana I don't think so. He is still someone who has taken a risk. I never expected No Mans Sky to be the best game ever, but it is indeed something special. I'm still glad there are people like Sean Murray who try to innovate and do new things in gaming. Also, I enjoyed No Mans Sky for a way longer time than I enjoyed Fallout 4, just saying.

    I feel like Ted in some aspects felt offended with some of Sean's explanations as to why he didn't feel noticed while working in big companies. Sean sounds and acts like a natural born leader in the game developer industry and has a highly anticipated game that has so much ambition to thrive, and with the right steps No man's sky could be absolutely amazing. Love Sean Murray to pieces and in my 15 years of gaming is the first developer to actually catch my interest. I'm excited to see where this game will take Hello Games. GO SEAN MURRAY!

      But then you watch 2 guys talking in a video like this and it is truly, really inspirational and motivational.

  • @mebaran
    @mebaran 9 років тому +6

    Sean makes a fantastic point. It seems like a lot of developers just throw in a tutorial without giving much thought to it. "Who is the tutorial for?" Exactly. Tutorials, for any average gamer, are just SUPER boring and often irritating. And for a person who has never played a game in their life, will be useless anyways.
    I wish more games just dropped you into the action and let you find your own way around the mechanics and controls...a trial by fire so to speak.

    • @Cawby
      @Cawby 9 років тому +2

      mebaran There has to be some middle ground that would work better than what is done these days. When I was a kid, essentially the first level of the game was a tutorial level, just in it's design instead of giving you button prompts. But the controls were so simple that you could decipher what was what a lot faster.
      How do you teach a new gamer effectively how to work your game when there's 10 buttons, 2 sticks and a d pad? Maybe for complex games the bayonetta load screen pops into mind as an idea. It really does feel like each modern game sorta needs it's own thing, but there's gotta be a way to streamline it more like oldschool games.

    • @cattenit2797
      @cattenit2797 9 років тому

      Cawby same way many games handle it "would you like to play the tutorial?" yes "are you new to X genre of games?" no "ok we'll give you the quick one" or no "oh kk then we'll give you a basic tutorial mixed in with the game specific one"

    • @Cawby
      @Cawby 9 років тому

      Carlton Mcnab Lol actually yeah that makes a lot of sense. I think that it can still be approached from a design perspective though, where a tutorial level can be built that doesn't feel like a chore. I can't think of any good examples from modern games atm, cause the only things I been playing lately don't have any form of tut levels. Like Bloodborne, it just throws you to the wolves, a werewolf actually, lol.

    Sean Murray (red shirt) looks like he is overwhelmed with this "what have I gotten myself into?!". Truth is while him and his posse brain stormed the coolest thing they could do, all this is what he wanted. He wanted to blow us all away with something we have never seen before. He and his gang have already shattered what holds back modern developers from such ambitious plans and dived into a game we are (probably) all excited for. Good luck buddy, good luck.

    When i first had a friend explain the concept of the game to me, and decided to watch a video, i had that ''nostalgic'' feeling right as i saw the vibrantly harmonizing collors and dinosaurs that really seemed to belong there in a very natural sense!

      @Ulvenok 9 років тому

      Tibovl Sorry but the purpose of the game is to reach the center of the galexy or whatever, to be teleporting vast distances would be cheating. You won't be able to teleport to your buddy, however you will be able to check on the galaxy map and agree to meet up at a planet. That'll work great, might take awhile to find eachother but it'll be worth it.

    • @Tibovl
      @Tibovl 9 років тому

    • @Ulvenok
      @Ulvenok 9 років тому

      Tibovl To teleport to eachother would be lame, also personal messaging each other would be lame unless you're near eachother. Got to keep it realistic then you'll be more immersed in the game. Also you can teleport from star to start and all players apparently start at the edge of the galaxy so you wouldn't have to go that far to find your buddy, probably just a few hundred stars.

    Sean Murray is a recluse. Its obvious, you can tell through his body language how opposed he is to the social interaction despite admiring the person hes talking to... He would do best to learn that out of his element is where he can easiest sabotage himself and his marketing efforts. He'd be best off having a socially adept member of his team as the face of the game

    • @gabeux

      I think you got it wrong. He said somewhere that he was extremely tired (and on the beggining of this video too), and I can relate to him because if I am tired, I become exactly like that. You can even notice that he gets annoyed with himself for not being able to finish sentences or ideas sucessfully during the video.
      Other interviews in which he's not tired, he's a very different person.
      Of course, I just started watching his interviews, but I really don't think he has any kind of social/psychological issues going on. He's just [very] tired.

      It is rare to see so much passion from a developer and wouldn't judge him too harshly by this video alone. I am constantly moved by the passion in which he talks about this project. I am glad to see true artistry still exists in this industry.

    This guy Sean doesn't even realize how much this game is going to do for him it will probably be the start to an unreal game company, such as bungie with halo ( i know they are nothing a like) but im just saying starting from nothing and doing something nobodys done and it becomes something so big. Very excited for this game and future games from this guy and his team at hello games.

    Ragdolls in Oblivion and Skyrim. Euphoria in GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption with NPC's tripping over each other and corpses. The awfully coded conversations. True gems in gaming. No joke. It was their bugginess but FREE unbounded nature that made them memorable and add a whole new layer of atmosphere to those games.
    Developers need to dare to be more open and free with their game mechanics. It is OKAY if they bug out occasionally. It's far far more memorable, enjoyable and interesting to see an NPC spazz out on the ground after you shot him, than seeing an identical pre-canned animation desperately trying to be "so real". Then seeing 3 identical poses of previously killed enemies nearby.

    • @dtanobo
      @dtanobo 10 років тому

      I totally agree. When you see NPCs in GTA V and RDR interacting with each other by either attacking or socialising, due to the unpredictability of the AI, it really is something special. Games like AC, while I love them, miss the open nature of these games. Everything feels like it's programmed to do one thing and everything else is an evident glitch or just feels forced. When a giant in Skyrim slams a wolf into oblivion (no pun intended) or when a bear slaughters a camp in Far Cry 3, that stuff makes for some hilarious memorable moments because the game's world was prepared for all those actions because it is 'unbound'. I hope more games realise that what makes a successful sandbox game is living in a living world with the right tools fitting the context.

    Ted Price comes across as incredibly arrogant and intimidated by Sean's entrepreneuristic spirit. Look at his body language, he is basically trying to rub how superior he thinks he is, compare the body language to that of Sean's where he is open and smiling (at least in the beginning). Price has obviously been in the industry for far longer so he has been drinking the kool aid longer than most. I hope Sean doesn't become jaded, he seems to down-to-earth for that to happen though.

    • @TriFekt
      @TriFekt 9 років тому +6

      I disagree completely, but it's whatever. They have completely different personalities, and they run in the same biz, they both know how things are done. That being said I don't know what the threat is. Insomniac isn't a company in trouble of anything, they're well established and are building big things. It seemed more like he was trying to be more relaxed and comfortable because Shawn is consistently uncomfortable in any interview with anyone.

      +Vheissu I can assure you, Sean is anything BUT down to Earth. I don't mean this in just a literal sense, but no Down-To-Earth person is capable of a game like that of No Man's Sky. Only a true-to-heart space frontiersman forerunner has the inspiration and aspiration to create a game like that. Sean has that spirit. I do too. Which is why No Man's Sky has me at a level of excitement no other game has even come close to. I almost dont think its a coincidence this game came to be at the time that it has....

    Really interesting cross interview. They both have really inspiring views of gaming and gamers. It is sad now to see Indie game devs starting to have their reputations discredited as whole due to the increasing numbers of unfinished and unpolished indie messes being released. To many gamers now 'indie' means, a game that has some good ideas, but they are marred by dodgy controls or implementation. Indie games are now a little like indie music... to a large extent landfill :/

    17:22 is proof the that the developer knew that there was virtually no gameplay because paused for like 3 seconds only to say that it is a sandbox.

      I don't think so, but there is just a bit of awkwardness to him being CEO of this veteran 200 people developer talking to a young and aspiring indie developer who is still amazed at the simple magic and tinkering in games development.
      A 10-year younger Ted Price would've probably been much more enthusiastic whereas now he's simply a more mature and experienced developer who has been there and done that.
