This game and the procedural generation concept in itself, brings to mind an idea that some scientists are actually working on for some time. What if our Universe is actually a very complex Virtual Simulation in a big and powerful Quantistic Computer, and we are just some elaborate and complex Artificial Intelligences?
Respect Sean Murray. So proud of you dude. You have all the right to be forgiven. We all mess up. But your comeback was brave and impecable. Thank you for sharing your dream with planet earth :)
The greatest part of all these interviews is that he is so humble. He will not admit that he has been smarter than other companies and such. Yet that is the absolute truth. It inspires me because I am in advanced math and doing programming but he denies inventing it even though he probably has. It's exactly how I would respond and exactly how someone extremely smart and inspired someone that thinks they aren't as smart would respond. Yet at the same time I would not compare myself to someone that has this much ambition as well as ideas that they committed to. He deserves everything that he has imagined. .
Man you can really feel that this guy is ambitious about his game. I could listen to him all day. I would buy this game 1000 times over an e.g. EA game, because you know someone like him puts everything hes got in his vision. CANT WAIT On the other site EA does everything to get your money with Day One DLC, Season Pass and all that with games that get pushed out the door WAY to early !
Frank Drebin I had no idea who they were before this, but Hellogames is going to go down as one of my all time favorite developers just by the way they're approaching this. They have a vision, they're seeing it through even if it means ruin (which is hella doubtful at this point lol) and if people support their vision, they will in turn support them by releasing free updates, some which will be based on community feedback/popularity. These guys are just the definition of awesome. I'm getting this game the first second I can, don't care how much it costs. Some people are bitching about paying 60 for it, I want to pay that for it, hell give me a collectors edition I can spend even more on, bethesda is charging an extra 60 for a piece of plastic, so can you! It'd probably be much higher quality too. Sony take my money damnit!!
Paul Keefe Yes. Wish more devs were like Murray. I enjoyed this interview more than any other I've seen on other games. His vision for this game is incredible.
I guess you guys are trying to put Sean on a pedestal too. Because, if you knew that David Braben is the founder of of precedurally generated space sim games, then gentle Sean would have at least mentioned the shoulders he is standing on. FYI Seans knows its not his idea, he just doesn't want you to know.
Grace Kelly Well, ED is always online for a reason, and Starbound is better than Terraria. In Terraria you just have one world. In Starbound you have almost infinite worlds. The principle is the same, but the scope is much bigger.
Zaru noi: No Man's Sky's online features seem more like asynchronous online stuff like the Souls games or Dragon's Dogma's pawn system from what I've read. Not really anything close to a MMO.
This game is either going to be great or ok and pretty to look around for a few hours worst case I look at pretty planets for 2 hours and refund it on steam....
It's amazing that he said something I always think about, how small and insignificant we really are when you take a look at how big the universe is. I cannot wait to play this!
I love learning about the developmental side and technical aspects of games so I'm really glad he brought out the debug menu and spoke about their techniques and stuff.I like how he seems so humble, I hope the game is good, either way I'm going to purchase it, I love space stuff and exploration and so far it seems like a fun world (worlds rather) to get lost in.
Sean Murray can talk about crab grass for an hour and I'd hang on every word. Been so hyped for this game for a looong time. Even IF it ends up a little boring, the fact that they are doing something to innovate and massive is exciting. Eventually, we're gonna get games that crossover this and Skyrim, and then I can die a happy man.
+Jason Krug I think that once this game releases and all the other developers see how it works and how cool it is they'll be clambering at his door for the formulas so they can put them into all their games.
Alex O It depends is sales and reception are as good as the hype seems. I hope so though, these algorithms would be awesome to see implemented in other games
I agree, I honestly don't see how this game can deliver anything less then it promised short of like not actually playing, because I mean they aren't promising the world or anything they have a very simple concept with some very complicated algorithms which is why I think this game will be outstanding.
Alex O My only worry is it might end up being just boring. It's been my most hyped game of 2016 for awhile now, but I'm trying to stay realistic cuz this is super ambitious
I don't think it can really get boring, I mean unless you have expectation of multiplayer really, because it's endless exploration and mining and trading which to me is really fun, I suppose it's all about managing your expectations of what you want out of a game.
its nice to see the almost childlike excitement of Sean Murray when he talks about his beloved game. No mans sky has come such a long way. what a beautiful game to look at and enjoy!
I'm currently studying video game production/design and this dude is a massive inspiration to me, it's so awesome to watch someone who's doing something as massive as this project and to be able to recognize how "normal" he is, it really gives me a positive impression that I too with consistent effort and and passion can create something incredible. Truly cannot wait for this game.
I can't wait to see what Hello Games will be able to do on the nextgen console's. I hope they will continue to support the game with more updates whenever the new system's are released. I've played over nine thousand hours in No Man's Sky and I have never gotten bored with it and with the Beyond update that add VR support it's like a whole new game for me. His man has done the impossible by taking a game that has so much potential and they keep adding to it and I really appreciate all they have given to us all who love and still play this amazing game. I love to be able to shack everyone's of the people's hands for everything they have done to help make all our lives a little better by creating this game. I'm definitely excited about the new game that they're working on but it will never take the place of No Man's Sky. Thank you to all the good people at Hello Games, I really appreciate everything you all have done. Thank's for the video and for sharing this with us. I promise to keep coming back for more and sharing your video's with as many people as I possibly can.👍💯👍
***** You don't need that crazy of a computer to run it. And no, even going by hardware alone, a PC is a LOT cheaper. For the price of a PS4 you can get a PC that is significantly more powerful.
William Manning No, you can't. With a $400 you can build a lower-end PC that will run modern games at 30FPS on low settings. I've tried to create builds for $400 that can outperform a PS4/Xbone, but it's not possible.
William Manning The $422 build on that site has a dual core cpu, 4gb of ram, and a GTX 750. That is not equivalent to the PS4. In addition, developers optimize specifically for consoles, improving performance. PCs are objectively better than consoles in many ways, price is not one of them.
People are afraid of different. Especially in the gaming industry. They want the same thing that has been fun for them over and over again until they're beating their heads on the table, and then they'll try something slightly different. But what is the point in gaming if we don't support the developers who take risks? Gaming is about innovating, it's always changing. I saw someone describe this game as "strange", as if that was a bad thing. That is what makes this game look so promising! It's strange! It's different! Stop accepting the same garbage in call of duty and assassin's creed, far cry, halo, all of the same games over and over again! These developers are doing something so different from anything that has been done, and that should be rewarded, not criticized. I am so happy for Hello Games that someone is finally taking a shot at rejuvenating the creativity in the gaming industry, even if this game isn't a success. You're doing something different and fantastic, and I appreciate it.
Impressive. He is so passionate for this game, I love it. Although It won't be on Xbox One, at least it isn't planned to be, I cannot wait to watch people explore the game, because I know it will be a different experience every time
I for one.... will be buying this game, getting in my ship, holding down my hyperdrive button in any random direction and just flying till nearly bingo fuel. Then i explore.
The most impressive part about that is the fact that the devs are genuine about it, and aren't pretentious douchbags with only PR lines that scream "Believe the hype!". I'm really excited for this game.
tajvader Exactly, Sean seems so down to earth and sincere when he talks about the game, I can feel his passion, and honestly that's what speaks the most for a game like this.
I love how it seems as though he is really excited about playing the final version of the game, its like this is his life goal, to explore alien planets, and now he can. And he doesn't act like a lot of other game developers who are saying that they have the best team ever, I like how humble he is being, despite being borderline genius, and developing an amazing game
Well ill be damned, this guy really is a wonderful speaker and very passionate about what hes doing, as for the maths element of all of this im sure its incredibly impressive and cant wait to see what it produces. A part of me wishes the algorithm was capable of rendering details at a further range from the player but as sean said as hardware improves the ability for the algorithm to do that will increase.
The algorithm is capable of rendering further, he said so himself that when console hardware improves they won't have to do much to take advantage of it. The 'popping in' issue is from the PS4's lack of power
***** He did say in the video nothing comes from the cloud server. The hardware generates the same results for each player. In previous interviews it was said the servers are for keeping data of what players discover. Like say when you discover a planet first. Other players will see your name as the one who discovered that planet when they arrive there. Anything you do on a planet that makes an impact on the surroundings will stay there for the next player that finds that location as well. Basically the servers will record our foot prints on the universe and relay that to other players. Or allow us to team up with friends, if you can find them. The universe is BIG. It won't be easy to locate other players.
***** It didn't look like an assumption, it looked like a mistake. And even if it was an assumption, it still doesn't make a guy an idiot. Or let's say someone makes a stupid or as you say "idiotic" statement, it's still not necessary to insult, you instantly lose an argument by doing so (even if there wasn't much argument to begin with :P). It's a totally different thing however, if he calls someone else an idiot in the process ... but as he didn't and just made a false statement, no need to insult people.
+Larry Sunshine well I can immediately tell you that ore wrong and obviously haven't been following NMS news. There is in fact a multiplayer, he has made it so that it is easier to find other real life players when traveling through the galactic map, and as long as you're connected to the internet you will be playing online with everyone else, no ps plus subscription required. This title is game changing if anything, certainly not "the biggest lie in gaming history" you get everything he has told us about and more that we don't even have any clue about. He's far from a dodgy cunt, he's only avoiding spoilers
***** After playing for a few days and hearing about people meeting up... I'm disappointed too. Lol... I was on that hype train and now it's angled into an ocean of disappointment. Though it's a fun singleplayer game... it's a refined version of Spore...
***** It has its quirks and is probably a good starting 'space sim' for people who are interested in the genre, but I prefer Elite: Dangerous. If anything this game will remind me to not hop on the hype train for Star Citizen, lol.
I love Sean Murray. Really makes this all interesting. Reminds me of of those cool replacement teachers you had back at school where everyone looked forward to his lessons.
I reckon this game is going to be fantastic and a #1 best seller. I believe what's off-putting is how humble Sean and his team are. They're so calm and relaxed it makes you wonder if it's as good as they say, but I think it is!
+Ham Caesar Sandy I hope so. I hope it isn't just a big space that looks pretty but doesn't have much content to spend your time on ( aside from exploring new plants and such) actual activities
Pretty sure they said they want Oculus and Morpheus (sorry about the spelling) support, but they were concentrating on the core game first... But yeah, as a "Tech Demo" for your friends as to why these VR sets are the next big thing, you can just show them this game with your VR set up of choice and create a new believer. XD
I have a feeling that every time I find a new planet and land on it, I'm going to have to do the slow walk and pan, like I'm demoing the game for someone watching.
It's really nice to see a developer who is genuinely excited about his own game. I really hope it comes together, because that's some really great tech.
I have to say though, the concept of a universe generated on the fly is breathtaking, it might not be a fun game, but its an amazing parallel to the probability function collapse of quantum mechanics, its an amazing piece of software
Going to buy this on PS4, then on Steam, then buy more copies on Steam to gift to my mates... These developers seem like legends who want to build a good game. You can't find many of their types these days.
The Vicatorian Star Citizen, I've put about £80 into so far. Already had Witcher 3 pre-ordered since it was available on Steam ;) I back any good developer and those ones you mentioned are some of my favorite. There's been a few indie developers I've been liking the work of lately aswell so I do keep an eye out. ;)
I really like this guy. Obviously, they did something really original, whether the "game" is good or not, the technology is interesting and definitely pushes video games forward. That being said, the guy is super humble. That's the sign of a person who has truly mastered their craft: they know how much more there is to learn.
24:12 ... To be honest, I see same ships all the time. Even once I saw 3 identical ships on a spacestation - and to top it off, the pilot was named the same in all of em. Literally the same. And after I saw that alien 3 times at the same time, alot more of the visitors were the same. So much for infinite number of variations.
Each space station has a few ships that spawn in and fly away to travel the star system, then come back. Go to a different space station and you'll see different ships and pilots.
Can someone please make a full-fledged documentary on this dev and the production of this game? Release it along with the game in a special edition and I'll pay double for it. "PHD in stupidity"! I really, really enjoyed this video.
I was instantly sold once it was communicated that you can explore quadrillions (literally) of planets. This game just amazes me, and I can't wait to play. On a side note, does anyone know what would happen if you crash your ship? Is it possible to get marooned on a planet? Is there super novas and black holes? BLACK HOLES?
ForeverRepublic I don't believe there are black holes. I can say however that there are repercussions if you die. Dying in space means you lose your ship and return to the nearest space hub or base like thing. That's why the currency will actually be worth something and your life is actually important. Hope this helps at least a little bit!
Nathan Distel Thanks mate. I've heard things from different people. Some say there are black holes, some say there aren't. So I'm not so sure. Although I think there might be a black hole at the center. I know there are ancient temples on some planets, and these temples contain portals that will transport you to different part of the galaxy, possibly hundreds of light years away.
I feel like I'm one of the few who still feel bad for Sean. He got absolutely shafted on release day - I can't believe he managed to come back and KILL it after all those death threats and mean words. That's some thick skin (compared to me at least)
"None of this exists on the...like...disk" - Sean Murray See...he's been a truthful fellow years before launch. On another note, how the fuck does this build look so good? Sometimes I wonder if Hello Games shipped the wrong version to everyone and has been too embarrassed to fix their mistake.
femiairboy94 You can discover & rename them (You can rename them only if you are the first to discover it. If you are the first to discover a new species, if I recall correctly, you can rename them too. Unipenis anyome? :P )
BoomBaDoom yeahh i just hope that the people who will play the game will have de decency and respect to put a proper name, and not somthing just plain stupid : / i have faith they will instead have great creative names like the ones we see in movies as pandora, andromeda like that (i cant actually make up a name, im not very creative xD)
femiairboy94 yeah i know what you mean but that wont be possible, because it is procedully generated, it doesnt store that kind of big changes, it would be cool tho, but i think its kind of impossible knowing how the game was built, but im not an expert or anything so dont take my word for it xD
Man... I hope the game reaches those levels of complexity again, space here looks truly amazing, planets close with asteroids fields and ''fog'' with planet rotating and having real dense clouds... The terrain itself being so different from what we've seen... with a cloud rendering system and graphics that look so much better... One day, No Man's Sky will reach the potential it set out for, im sure it will. :) Updates so far are amazing, and graphics are looking amazing!
He blushes as he says that the tools he shows us are ugly and he shouldn't be showing them but, this level of openness and ingenuity truly makes me think these guys are awesome and I love the peak beyond the curtain. These guys ROCK!
It's not ONE formula, its a series of relatively basic formula, layered on top of one another. Look for 'Perlin Noise' and 'Ridged multi-fractal noise'. I'm making my own procedurally generated game. It's not insanely difficult - as it sounds when you say 'a formula for the universe' - but it is incqredible maths :)
Kserijaro So basically what you're saying is you've missed my entire point? Jeez, man. Sort out your life. You're yelling at strangers through the internet. How sad is your life?
Just love listening to Sean talk about his game. His whole team are genius as a collective, this is going to be revolutionary, this is going to change the future of gaming. VR and procedural gaming...
Borderlands guns are procedurally generated and no 2 playthroughs will net you the same guns. even the "unique" boss drops have hundreds if not thousands of combinations.
This video lasted for almost 34 minutes, and during the whole time I felt like it was a 5 minutes long promo. Wow! You guys really know how to keep a person interested and amazed by the bueaty of your work.
+rubrsoul16 ... even funnier with the broken English- "when-it-will-come-out"... like a innocent child asking an innocent question.... beautifully done!
I really respect Sean Murray for the effort he and his team has put into this game. The foundations he lays here will be a real turning point for how games in the future are made and the concepts developers will employ to create new and innovative games. He is so humble about his work and you can get a real sense of the passion he has for it. I really hope No Man's Sky is a success and the entire development team get the recognition they deserve for such a brilliant and well executed feat!
I love this video. No Man’s sky today is an incredible game. Lot of new stuff was added into the game, but the art, the style of older versions of the is incredibly better than NEXT update!
Question of the interview- Why haven't other developers done procedural generation to this extent before? Seriously why.. I hope in 10 years time gaming is taken to places that we can't even yet comprehend. My jaw was just dropped looking at the universe being created before my eyes, and that it is not apart of the disk and it was just randomly generated but it blended to perfection.. I can't believe my eyes.. I don't care if this is just an exploration game showing off this new game technology this has set the mark for future games imo.
because last gen consoles couldnt handle it. The PS4 cant even handle it look at all the terrain that is generated while you still there (the "pop in" people are complaining about)
Lucus Kane I've watched over 70% of the above video and I'm not sure why you think he has to? I'm sure he's mentioned it in the past and you can't keep on tipping your metaphorical hat to the inventor every time you stand on their shoulders. :-\
If this was some sort of white paper or other academic article, I'd understand. However, it's a casual interview about a video game. Also, surely Sean Murray is looking into procedurally generated code with their own slant/take on things. Sure, it might be inspired but plagiarism's a bit strong, I feel. :-\
IDEA! What if we had in game events like supernovas or planets being created or even entire WARS with lasers pew pew and mass extinctions, but if you can't do it that's ok.
Not just you. Events like supernovas, black holes, etc would be cool. I wonder how much sci they are going to be in the scifi features. The universe is full of chaos. would love to see that simulated in game.
I love his voice. I love this guy. I also like how he showed himself playing it, not a cinematic trailer. It was real gameplay. He showed how it worked and was honest.
Those talking about pop-in (things loading on screen noticeably) need to realize that this is the debug cam. Debug cams have no speed limits and hence can zoom past stuff. In the actual game you'll be constrained by the limits of your 'body' or the ship. You will NEVER go this fast in the game, unless you're in hyper-space, where the level of detail is very low compared to on a planet. Plus, this is the build from 1.5 YEARS ago. Things change a lot during that time.
+error 123 and you know this? He speaks in an odd Irish accent that sounds authentic... He exhibits honesty, modesty and other Irish characteristics... Where do you think he's from??
Combine this game with Civilization and For Honor (just to one huge planet or two though). Man, in 20 years guys, we have games that so massive and complex in comparison to NMS. I'm excited for the future!!
Yeah after the next update the original art style and concept was totally removed, I feel like i was robbed of my favorite game they should add two builds of the game or at least a choice to go back to the old builds
something i just realized hasnt been mentioned.... are there varying levels of gravity? i mean.. there should be, right? there should be planets where taht jet pack can send you a half mile in the sky, and other planets where the only possible way to travel is by your ship...
+mAtÜ which simply means there's no gravity. There is simply no gravity in the game, because that would add a VERY BIG performance impact (hence the procedural generation is already demanding high tech processors) so it's not like there is gravity but the suit you wear compensates for it. If you were to have your suit unequipped (which you CAN'T do) you would still jump and walk and so on on all of the planets (would be missing the jet-pack of course) because there is simply no gravity at all. You can even see it in the way the spaceships move in space or in the atmosphere. If there was gravity there would be velocity (speed) and most importantly mass (weight)stats and forces applied to EVERYTHING and everything would also have functioning real weight as a stats, taken in to account and calculated for every single nanosecond that this object is being processed for. In space there would be also structural failures (objects exploding), due to the forces applied depending on their mass and strength. IF let's say there was anti-gravity tech involved, then you will need energy resource to keep the gravity compensation running which only adds even more resource demand and to be honest, by itself, the idea that there's gravity but it's constantly being nulled by a technology your character is using is simply redundant. This would involve additional calculations (hence you first have gravity factor with calculating mass, direction and velocity then something that nulls all the previous calculations) making it all redundant in the first place.. only will use hardware resource for something that they can simply not add and say that "your suit compensates it" ....to make you feel better. More weight = more gravity pull (both space and atmosphere) It's gravity that is pulling every single object, so the bigger the weight the bigger the gravity pull for EVERYTHING. The mass (weight) of the planet itself is what defines the strength of the gravitational forces that will apply to EVERYTHING that's inside it's gravity ring be it space or in the atmosphere.. "The Moon's gravity is much less than the Earth's gravity - approximately one sixth. So, a 100 kg astronaut weighs 980N on Earth. On the Moon, the astronaut would weigh only 162.2N. However, the astronaut's mass is 100kg where-ever they are. Weight on Earth: 100kg x 9.8m/s2 = 980N." Now add all these calculations for EACH object (trees, rocks, leaves, spaceships, animals, players, equipment, debris, planets, space stations) with taking in to account it's own mass, size and speed and add them to the procedural generation of the world and all the basic engine, OS, 3rd party software calculations as well and you will need a supercomputer to run this. Not to mention that if there was gravity, then the simple docking to the station part would be extremely difficult. Hence it should be flying at 11,000+ km/h around the planet and you need to match it's speed and place in space and gently enter the hangar.... If you want to get an idea of how "simple" gravity calculations and aerodynamics affect the overall performance of hardware, you can install Kerbal Space Program and enjoy :) so, yea, there's no gravity in this game and the suit explanation is just keeping up the role-playing for this game. it would be really cool of course to add the gravity factor, but i guess it will only happen with the next generation games and machines that can sufficiently process all these calculations.
Tici Toty Tony Fingers crossed we find out with this IGN feature coming up, or maybe gamescom/playstation experience. Whenever it is, it will never be soon enough!!
Tici Toty Tony I'd prefer an incredibly amazing 10/10 game that took 5 years to come out over a meh game that gets pumped out every year. Although this game can't come out soon enough
Loved the behind the scenes and explanation of the maths and vision involved. I like Sean's humility and enthusiasm very much and this game grabbed my attention from when I first saw a trailer for it ages ago. The concept intrigues me greatly and I'm excited to get to play in this universe ;) I too hope it turns out to be popular and great.
Just a great video :) I just love the game and especially the developers. I think he has 100% right about what he says to Assassin's Creed or Watch_Dogs with there big Teams. And I just love how he thinks with the Insporation of his game. It's hard to explain :D I also want to be a game developer later once and i see it the same way like he does. Can not wait to play the game :) Hopefully I can also develop sometime in a small studio with a few friends and do something "big" without working for Ubisoft or so.
I agree with you. I love how this guy thinks. I had no problem understanding his vision for this game. I really hope they pull it off in the end. I may never play or buy another game after this one. No Man's Sky will be an amazing escape to get lost in!
I was very nervous about how this game was actually going to play, given that it seemed like such a hugely impossible idea for an Indie team to put together, but this kind of interview that gives a really in-depth look at the programming behind it puts tons of faith back into the project for me.
Brendan Forish Which is super cool. When the game finally ships, there will be ships, planets and lifeforms that will even shock the developers. I find the idea most appealing since everyone has the chance to find the next big unique thing.
That'd all be true if they didn't create the parameters of change within the spawning system. It may seem like tons of variety, but the meshes will become old if all that changes are their color, shape, and maybe size. The game looks good, but when he said that his future goal was to extend the series, I felt like he was going to make it like Destiny with their money-making tactics and give us little quantity.
This is genius. Not only the game itself is fasciinating. Also the way these guys approached their goals. There is lots of modern scientific theory embedded on how the world might really be at its core. Random wave functions. He gave a very interesting hint of automatic improvements to the game as soon as you play it with next generation machines with more capabilities. That's so mind buggling if you think that we could be sets of ultimate "quantum processors" generating our reality. It might be interesting for physicists and next generation physicists to understand the programming and maybe gather new perspectives on the real universe and how it generates itself, if it's really there in total or only fractal, generated piece by piece for every individual in some kind of multiplayer mode. Thrilling.
"I'd like the game to be popular and get to work on it more...that would be nice" -Sean Murray
I'm eager to say he has accomplished :) that!!
Can't wait for beyond!
Nope, not even after 5 years, his game is still bs and he is still a criminal.

+Schamottriese 500 games, 1500 dlcs
+Cawby yep exactly dude
Miska Woah, in reference to what I said here, we can already see them taking the community suggestions in since they've added npcs and shit.
Cawby yep :D
I like how the GI reporter is trying to put Sean Murray on a pedestal, but he keeps kicking that pedestal away and remains pretty grounded.
Which he gets major points for in my book
Paul Keefe Yes. Wish more devs were like Murray. I enjoyed this interview more than any other I've seen on other games. His vision for this game is incredible.
He had to mention Carmack The Non-human to make the interviewer stop doing that.
Yeah very humble dude
I guess you guys are trying to put Sean on a pedestal too. Because, if you knew that David Braben is the founder of of precedurally generated space sim games, then gentle Sean would have at least mentioned the shoulders he is standing on. FYI Seans knows its not his idea, he just doesn't want you to know.
This is the game I've always wanted...
If you like the look of this game check out Star Citizen aswell, not as colorful and vibrant as No Man's Sky but it looks amazing
Also:
Limit Theory, Elite: Dangerous and Starbound.
VperVendetta1992
Elite Dangerous has always online DRM and Starbound is just another Terraria
Grace Kelly
Well, ED is always online for a reason, and Starbound is better than Terraria.
I really like when he say's "maths"
+Johnny Franck Productions
and i like when he says "huge" for some reason :D
+Michał Lxxa "Yuge" :D
+Johnny Franck Productions i like his hands
Yuge maths!
That's how you say it.
Mathematics, shortened to Maths.
Sean Murray. The master of slowly moving the camera to show the beuty of the game. And it is insanely beautiful.
Everytime I see this guy he is smiling, legend in the making
+A Child From Africa That's because batman dipped him in acid.
*Me, from the future* You don't even know the half of it XD
In a way, he kinda is
Lmao
"Dumb enough to try this, smart enough to pull it off"
- Sean Murry
***** But he agreed, same thing ;)
***** Haha, yeah xD
This game is either going to be great or ok and pretty to look around for a few hours worst case I look at pretty planets for 2 hours and refund it on steam....
+Brian Givens - Fallout 4 Videos (Road to 2.5k) good recovery lol
that's actually quite amazing.
it's cool going back and watching this. Sean is such a class act.
I love how excited and passionate this man is about the game, his team and the work, and yet remains so incredibly humble.
Alex O
It depends is sales and reception are as good as the hype seems.
Alex O
My only worry is it might end up being just boring.
I love this video so much. I could listen to Sean Murray talk this stuff for hours.
I promise to keep coming back for more and sharing your video's with as many people as I possibly can.👍💯👍
This has aged well 😂 nms had the worst launch but the best redemption story of all time
It’s launch was exaggerated by trolls and toxicity
Can't wait to get my hands on this game. I literally just want to fly around the universe.
Try Space Engine; it's free and already out.
*****
You don't need that crazy of a computer to run it.
Solokeh Krontos
Look at the $400 rig on this site: www.logicalincrements.com/
Couldnt agree more :)
This comment aged horribly lol
Impressive. He is so passionate for this game, I love it. Although It won't be on Xbox One, at least it isn't planned to be, I cannot wait to watch people explore the game, because I know it will be a different experience every time
Hey bud just popping in to let you know it’s on Xbox One now I just downloaded it.
This guy is so well spoken. I could listen to him all day.
Thank you HelloGames for developing such a masterpice! :D
I love this guy, so down to earth.
This dude is smart!!
I for one.... will be buying this game, getting in my ship, holding down my hyperdrive button in any random direction and just flying till nearly bingo fuel.
Then i explore.
You just described Star Trek.
^
*salutes*
Ill find you, it will be by personal goal. Then I'll take ur ship, plow ur groupies and toss you overboard.
Well... shit
9 years later, still standing on business, still giving us more and more of the game, as fast as they can imagine it. Unreal.
This game continues shoving it in my face how overly ambitious and expansive it looks and I love it. I'd preorder right now if I could.
Yes! Pre-orders now please!
***** you're an idiot :) The planets are not downloaded, they are created by the hardware in the living room you are playing in
Conrad Bingham That doesn't make him an idiot. Is it hard to have a normal conversation for you?
He's such a kind and modest man
He's really humble. Like... virtuous kind of humble...
+Larry Sunshine I have to agree. But he's just bashful and doesn't want to answer questions that he's not sure about.
+Ham Caesar Sandy I think they don't realize how many people want this game
This is the PERFECT game for VR. When you put on the goggles, you want to be somewhere else. And this game is FULL of "Somewhere Else".
Completely agree
fuck yea. I'm sure this guy will make Oculus Rift be a thing for it after it's release.
XD
holy shit i totally forgot about Oculus Rift until you said that, this will be amazing if he supports it.. my body is ready
well its on playstation, and you know what Sony is making? project Morpheus ... will be epic
Little did you know this was gonna be one hell of a roller coaster.
I don't think I'll ever tire of listening to Sean's passion for this project. Can't wait to explore this game.
I've never wanted to talk to another human being as much as I want to talk with Sean Murray about those algorithms
Oh how I love these old comments. Really shows how hyped everyone was.
Star Citizen, The Witcher 3.
hey man if you want, we can be friends.
*****
Nice
The Vicatorian Star Citizen, I've put about £80 into so far. Already had Witcher 3 pre-ordered since it was available on Steam ;)
I back any good developer and those ones you mentioned are some of my favorite.
There's been a few indie developers I've been liking the work of lately aswell so I do keep an eye out. ;)
Lost without this game wish we could go back to the old builds on PS4
I really like this guy. Obviously, they did something really original, whether the "game" is good or not, the technology is interesting and definitely pushes video games forward.
That being said, the guy is super humble. That's the sign of a person who has truly mastered their craft: they know how much more there is to learn.
24:12 ... To be honest, I see same ships all the time. Even once I saw 3 identical ships on a spacestation - and to top it off, the pilot was named the same in all of em. Literally the same. And after I saw that alien 3 times at the same time, alot more of the visitors were the same. So much for infinite number of variations.
Same with plants and rock formations and sometimes creatures. I see the exact same things on sooo many planets. So much for infinite variations huh!
Each space station has a few ships that spawn in and fly away to travel the star system, then come back. Go to a different space station and you'll see different ships and pilots.
He meant infinite number of colors, so you get blue, light blue ... Thats what's so unique, as is the price for this game that i paid.
This is definitely a $14.99 USD game!
Can someone please make a full-fledged documentary on this dev and the production of this game? Release it along with the game in a special edition and I'll pay double for it. "PHD in stupidity"! I really, really enjoyed this video.
He is an extremely humble guy, this is probably the first game that I have enjoyed watching interviews of the programmers
ForeverRepublic It's confirmed actually that there is going to be blackholes
LegendaryMarston Thank you.
ForeverRepublic
Your welcome Republic
The wait is killing me. Please give us a date. These videos are torture.
This is THE future of gaming, 10/10 well done. This tech is so damn good.
15:06 Leaked footage of Shawn Murphy explaining the overhyping of No Man's Sky
Sean*
Who tf is "Shawn Murphy"? you donut
ua-cam.com/video/1nqF0ddDc8I/v-deo.html
I feel like I'm one of the few who still feel bad for Sean. He got absolutely shafted on release day - I can't believe he managed to come back and KILL it after all those death threats and mean words. That's some thick skin (compared to me at least)
Yeah me too
Yeah I’ve never seen someone create such a shitstorm and then come back from it
Superb interview and tech demo. A programmer's dream!
"None of this exists on the...like...disk" - Sean Murray
See...he's been a truthful fellow years before launch.
On another note, how the fuck does this build look so good? Sometimes I wonder if Hello Games shipped the wrong version to everyone and has been too embarrassed to fix their mistake.
It’ll be so cool if we can develop the planets we discover by ourselves and make it ours
femiairboy94 You can discover & rename them (You can rename them only if you are the first to discover it. If you are the first to discover a new species, if I recall correctly, you can rename them too. Unipenis anyome? :P )
BoomBaDoom ohh i see lol thats cool
BoomBaDoom yeahh i just hope that the people who will play the game will have de decency and respect to put a proper name, and not somthing just plain stupid : / i have faith they will instead have great creative names like the ones we see in movies as pandora, andromeda like that (i cant actually make up a name, im not very creative xD)
*****
welcome to planet obamasaurus
femiairboy94 yeah i know what you mean but that wont be possible, because it is procedully generated, it doesnt store that kind of big changes, it would be cool tho, but i think its kind of impossible knowing how the game was built, but im not an expert or anything so dont take my word for it xD
It just turned into a minecraft clone in space. What a shame, truly.
@@hamzehaladwan no
He blushes as he says that the tools he shows us are ugly and he shouldn't be showing them but, this level of openness and ingenuity truly makes me think these guys are awesome and I love the peak beyond the curtain. These guys ROCK!
When we are going to test an Ai we should give them a universe like no man sky and see what happens
+Equalitas We could be the result of that type of thinking XD
+Dominic La Rondie That could well be true, the possibilities of existence are endless, strange thought.
we could just watch the game play itself.. but this looks completely awesome
we could just watch the game play itself.. but this looks completely awesome
o shit
He built a formula to the universe.
Did not build a formula .. he "borrowed" a formula. Look it up.
J King I was referring to the OP, not you haha. But no prob
If this massive liar is a God amongs men for you, then you are worth less then a fucking worm.
Kserijaro So basically what you're saying is you've missed my entire point? Jeez, man. Sort out your life. You're yelling at strangers through the internet. How sad is your life?
Cool...so when is this game coming out?
Just love listening to Sean talk about his game. His whole team are genius as a collective, this is going to be revolutionary, this is going to change the future of gaming. VR and procedural gaming...
I can't wait... I'm going to get so lost in this game.
CostanzaKramer1 Imagine when we get Project Morpheus from Sony and then playing this game with that virtual reality.... My gosh... *-*
CostanzaKramer1 Can you really get lost, if getting lost (...sorta) is the point? :P
SOTBS Lol that was my point, too
I shall buy a PS4 JUST for this game. And maybe... Cough cough Call of Duty Black Ops 3 DLC COUGH COUGH... So sorry
Lets Talk About Stuff it's not an exclusive.
Epic quote: "We only did it because we were stupid enough. We could get a PhD in that." - Sean Murray.
star wars + star trek + minecraft + borderlands = A F*CKING GOOD GAME
+Davis Moniz because of the randomly generated gear? Borderlands gun/shield/grenademods/artifacts are all procedurally generated
This is awsome. So excited for this game.
This game looks cool, I wonder when it will come out.
LOL
lmao
Hahahaha that's fcking mean xD
lololol I literally laughed out loud
+rubrsoul16 ... even funnier with the broken English- "when-it-will-come-out"... like a innocent child asking an innocent question.... beautifully done!
Amazing :D - you can really hear this man's passion!
Question of the interview-
Why haven't other developers done procedural generation to this extent before?
Seriously why.. I hope in 10 years time gaming is taken to places that we can't even yet comprehend.
My jaw was just dropped looking at the universe being created before my eyes, and that it is not apart of the disk and it was just randomly generated but it blended to perfection.. I can't believe my eyes..
I don't care if this is just an exploration game showing off this new game technology this has set the mark for future games imo.
because last gen consoles couldnt handle it. The PS4 cant even handle it look at all the terrain that is generated while you still there (the "pop in" people are complaining about)
FYI procedural generation was invented by David Braben, in 1984 on an 8 bit computer. Why isn't Sean giving him credit?
Lucus Kane
I've watched over 70% of the above video and I'm not sure why you think he has to? I'm sure he's mentioned it in the past and you can't keep on tipping your metaphorical hat to the inventor every time you stand on their shoulders. :-\
BigWelshMike In science we call that plagiarism. Credit the source material. Always.
No? Just me?
Not just you. Events like supernovas, black holes, etc would be cool. I wonder how much sci they are going to be in the scifi features. The universe is full of chaos. would love to see that simulated in game.
It would be pretty cool
HonoLolLol Lol it was confirmed at E3 2015 that will be in the game.
Alex Rozinov Fuck making the biggest genocide a planet has ever seen. I'd destroy the whole godamned planet!
This game and company as truely inspired me thank you Sean Murray and Hello Games
I love his voice. I love this guy. I also like how he showed himself playing it, not a cinematic trailer. It was real gameplay. He showed how it worked and was honest.
Josh Sells Guns honest?
dear Sean is that your lucky shirt ? like everything you and your team are doing (at least what i know about)
Those talking about pop-in (things loading on screen noticeably) need to realize that this is the debug cam.
I'm glad Sean did show us all the tools it shows how impressive this game is, and how many types of species and ships and weapons there will be !
I love his personality. Hes so humble.
+Steve Jones I love him to. I want to know how old he is but i can not find it anywhere on the internet.
+Steve Jones Gotta love the Irish:)
+BLUEDEWGAM3R judging by his face and the sound of his voice, i'd say he's in his mid 30s.
+Lord Ridiculous he is not Irish.
I'm excited for the future!!
this its the new noch
Notch*
thanks
Thank you for asking that last question about reflecting on our own Universe. Great discussing.
This guy is basically Ken Levine's secret brother
Why does it have to come out when I am at the toughest part of my schooling?
+The Great JoePod rip xD i will be done at that time haha
+The Great JoePod It comes out a few days after i get done with school :P
+Miska saaame lol
Drop out. Who cares about "real life" anymore, you'll have No Man's Sky!
Erik well it must have ruined his life...
I have an xbox one and I'm thinking of buying a ps4 just for this game. This game is just majestic as fudgeee....
TheOneAndOnlyKOOLKOA you could just upgrade your pc instead. unless you are posting from your phone, then carry on.
Please go somewhere, holzi.
AwesomeKiddo Get cancer
until I become a space pirate............gg traders
+TheOneAndOnlyKOOLKOA people are saying Elite Dangerous is better than No Man's Sky, you may wanna stay with X-one.
I've watched this so many times. It keeps getting better :)
I hope the super formula used in the procedural generation model viewer will be used in the big 2020 update for No Man’s Sky
Yeah after the next update the original art style and concept was totally removed, I feel like i was robbed of my favorite game they should add two builds of the game or at least a choice to go back to the old builds
I hope so too! They should reuse old assets .
something i just realized hasnt been mentioned.... are there varying levels of gravity? i mean.. there should be, right? there should be planets where taht jet pack can send you a half mile in the sky, and other planets where the only possible way to travel is by your ship...
"your suit compensate its" - Sean Murray
There is no gravity
Sean told that the suit ur wearing balances the gravity
+mAtÜ
which simply means there's no gravity.
Weight on Earth: 100kg x 9.8m/s2 = 980N."
Now add all these calculations for EACH object (trees, rocks, leaves, spaceships, animals, players, equipment, debris, planets, space stations) with taking in to account it's own mass, size and speed and add them to the procedural generation of the world and all the basic engine, OS, 3rd party software calculations as well and you will need a supercomputer to run this.
Not to mention that if there was gravity, then the simple docking to the station part would be extremely difficult. Hence it should be flying at 11,000+ km/h around the planet and you need to match it's speed and place in space and gently enter the hangar....
If you want to get an idea of how "simple" gravity calculations and aerodynamics affect the overall performance of hardware, you can install Kerbal Space Program and enjoy :)
so, yea, there's no gravity in this game and the suit explanation is just keeping up the role-playing for this game.
it would be really cool of course to add the gravity factor, but i guess it will only happen with the next generation games and machines that can sufficiently process all these calculations.
+Cnupoc Damn u did ur research :)
So when the fuck is this coming out???
Tici Toty Tony Fingers crossed we find out with this IGN feature coming up, or maybe gamescom/playstation experience. Whenever it is, it will never be soon enough!!
Cawby ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) true lol
Tici Toty Tony I'd prefer an incredibly amazing 10/10 game that took 5 years to come out over a meh game that gets pumped out every year.
Although this game can't come out soon enough
Flying Spectacles especially Mass Effect: Andromeda i love that BioWare is taking there sweet time with the game
Novemberish I'm thinking. Definitely this year though. Thats already confirmed.
You are the man Sean! First game I've ever been this excited for, you've inspired me to do my own thing
Greetings for all the travalers from 2018, a week from NMS NEXT release.
Arthur Farrakhov hello, I’m back
On a side note though this build looks like it has a lot more draw distance than the released build.
I agree, the render distance in the current build is really poor. Especially when in space with the asteroids and all.
It really pulls me out of the immersion when the view distance pops in at close range. This game is a gimmick and we were lied too.
+portyMD Not just that but the volumetric lighting, fog effects and colors look infinitely richer.
Can you land on asteroids and comets? are there kind of free roaming asteroids and comets going through different solar systems?
+Ole Kristian E yes just not sure about comets going trough solar system but i would presume so
they actually did say you could land on asteroids
Loved the behind the scenes and explanation of the maths and vision involved. I like Sean's humility and enthusiasm very much and this game grabbed my attention from when I first saw a trailer for it ages ago. The concept intrigues me greatly and I'm excited to get to play in this universe ;) I too hope it turns out to be popular and great.
Just a great video :)
I just love the game and especially the developers.
I think he has 100% right about what he says to Assassin's Creed or Watch_Dogs with there big Teams.
And I just love how he thinks with the Insporation of his game.
It's hard to explain :D
I also want to be a game developer later once and i see it the same way like he does.
Can not wait to play the game :)
Hopefully I can also develop sometime in a small studio with a few friends and do something "big" without working for Ubisoft or so.
I agree with you. I love how this guy thinks. I had no problem understanding his vision for this game. I really hope they pull it off in the end. I may never play or buy another game after this one. No Man's Sky will be an amazing escape to get lost in!
CausticNebula It's going to be a great game this guy is simply brilant but still I think maybe it's also gonna be repetitive and boring after a while
Me too! ;D
I was very nervous about how this game was actually going to play, given that it seemed like such a hugely impossible idea for an Indie team to put together, but this kind of interview that gives a really in-depth look at the programming behind it puts tons of faith back into the project for me.
actually its quite the opposite... there a lot less work involved because a few liens of code creates everything for them
Brendan Forish Which is super cool.
I'm probably the only one that continue coming back to this video. Procedural generation is so cool.
i agree
Thrilling.
