I have one luxury that I really enjoy when hooking up any 3 point implement. I have 4 loader tractors. I go get another tractor and lift the implement up and suspend it with a chain. Then, moving it around becomes a snap.
Hello again Ed, I made a comment this morning, about a quick hitch, and then went about my day. But all day, I kept thinking, I am sure I saw a video from Ed a while back with a quick hitch on his tractor. But hey, I am sliding into my sunset years. All the best, Ben
Seeing you struggle mounting the cutter to your 3-point lift arms made me so glad I bought the Pat's Quick Hitch. Makes that process so much easier and in your case would have eliminated the necessity of shortening your PTO shaft. You should look into them.
Great video, Ed! Yep, it’s critical that your PTO shafts are the correct length to avoid Chaos, Death & Destruction. Man, it was painful watching you struggle to get the 3 point hooked up! Do yourself a favor and get a Pat’s Easy Change system so you can just can just back up, lift up, and at the sound of two clicks your lift arms are securely hooked to the implement. Adjust and connect your top link and you’re off to the races. Thanks for sharing!
Nice tips on the drive shaft. I still have a few of my tools from my teens and 20's, but my son and his friend did a good job thinning out many of my tools, years ago. Thanks for sharing, Ed. - Rick
Good advise. My triangle type PTO shafts all have one of the 3 has a flat edge that will index to the other half. Thanks also to Mark Lewis. I always wondered why the halves had to be connected together in one way. 💡 Thanks for vid #113 🍻👍🚜🤠
Nobody likes to hook up a 3pt hitch implement.....said EVERYBODY that owns a tractor!! 😡 But I'm impressed that you chose to move the tractor by hand!! 🤣 I've got a 6' long metal "digger" that I keep handy and makes the job so much easier.....yet, still not fun!
Yes, the orientation of the shaft halves matters. The U-Joints have to stay in phase or you will get a lot of vibration, to the point it will destroy the joints and shaft. That is why it only goes together one way. Some don't and you have to mark the shaft or pay attention.
Thanks! Always wondered why they would make it so would go to the trouble of only allowing it to go on one way. This makes o much sense and never occurred to me.
Thanks for the video. Nice to see how that actually works. I don’t have a rear PTO implement yet, but will have a good idea to how to adjust the shaft now if/when I get one.
Great how to video! Have to find my rotary cutter and hook it up! Like this kind of video better than the rigged give away sessions, where I never win bumper stickers!
Hello Ed. Great video, we always learn something from you, or in the comments. As we were watching , we were saying no no, don't cut the pto shaft yet, go buy a quick hitch. It will change your life. But Wiliam Sevier mentioned a pto extention in his comment, which could save you from buying a new shaft , if there is a quick hitch in your future. It is just about the right time to start dropping hints to Santa. All the Best to you and Anne, Ben from Nova Scotia
Haha, thanks, Ben. I do have a QH and a PTO extension, but I don’t think it works with this mower since I t doesn’t work with my finish mower. Silly me, I didn’t even think to try it! 🤣
Nice work Ed, great video as always. I have the same Dewalt 20-volt grinder and find it to be very handy! Just hooked up my in-laws 6 ft bush hog last week and thankfully didn't have to cut the shaft.
Fwiw, I put the Pats easy change on my B2601, Ed. You’re younger and stronger than I am but I’m never gonna have to fight to get a three-point attachment on again.
Cool brush hog glad the PTO shaft came to long so you had room to make it work on your B2601😁👍Have a great Labor Day weekend you two. Thanks for the video 🚜💨🍳
Nice to see your wife getting involved. Here too all the way up New Brunswick Canada the sweet corn grew but mid summer it stopped growing. So I waited a couple of week to see if it would start again but no last night the racoons got it all down.
The struggle is real my friend! Dreading having to do this with my Woodchipper and box blade later this season. Thanks for showing us. Ed says.. "Because this shaft is sooo long...." Bahaha!
Box blade don't use a PTO shaft, so there's nothing to cut LOL. I got the quick hitch for my tractor, makes quick easy work for swapping attachments. with my tiller I still have to get off the tractor to hookup or unhook the PTO shaft but no big deal. Everything else I can do from the tractor seat. If you don't use many PTO implements a quick hitch I think is a great time saver, and definitely easier on your feet and legs than kicking 3 point arms over pins.
When I bought my tractor I bought it with a roto-tiller, so the PTO shaft was cut at the dealership. I later decided to get the quick hitch....I quickly found out after the PTO shaft separated while I was using the tiller, that I needed a longer PTO shaft. A trip to the dealer only to find they pulled the wrong style drive shaft, I went to the local Tractor Supply and picked up a PTO extension which goes on the end of a PTO shaft on a tractor and extends it about 2 inches. In my case I put it on the tiller side because its the only implement I have that needs the PTO, so its permanently attached to the roto-tiller's gear box. So, in the future if I get other PTO powered implements, I simply cut the PTO shaft a bit longer due to the added space from the quick hitch....which is something you might want instead of having to kick the 3 Point arms onto the pins, I simply backup to an attachment/implement and raise the 3 Point....I'm finally getting the hang of mine and it works great, right after I got it I usually spent more time cussing at it because it seemed I'd never get both lower pins at the same time....I've learned to backup with a bit more speed and lift the 3 point as I bump up against the pins, drops right in every time now. With that I don't have to get off the tractor, I can reach the release levers on the quick hitch to lock and unlock and implement/attachment....with the tiller I still have to get off the tractor to hookup and unhook the PTO of course. With my box blade and grading blade I don't have to leave the tractor seat.
@@MyClutteredGarage Seems to be so far LOL. The only thing I have that don't work with the quick hitch is the 3 point receiver hitch, but I don't use it often enough to care that it don't work on the quick hitch.
OK, this is an excellent drive shaft video, but I must say I'm REALLY gratified to see that the fingers of someone else's deerskin gloves look just as holy as mine! @@MyClutteredGarage around $200 for the pats quick hitch but still much cheaper than them boxy types... I absolutely like mine work so well and they will work on any three-point implement old or new with no bushings
Yep, found that out with my roto-tiller. I had ordered a quick hitch when I bought my tractor, but apparently like everything else with my purchase nobody bothered to communicate anything throughout the dealership...so the PTO shaft was cut without taking the quick hitch into account....so once my quick hitch arrived I quickly found out while using the tiller that the PTO shaft was too short. I simply bought a PTO extender and solved the problem, but really irks me that the damn dealership communication skills are beyond horrible, that they couldn't bother to tell the setup crew that the tractor had a quick hitch going with it to cut the PTO shaft longer....oh well, got it fixed, but luckily no damage was caused by the PTO shaft separating during operation. I plan on getting a rotary cutter in the future, a wood chipper, and possibly a flail mower, so I know now to make sure to cut the PTO shafts accordingly.

Hi Terry. I don't know the answer, but I'd be concerned with anything less than 6-8 inches.
