- Dick Enberg of NBC quotes Red Barber and his own grandfather in describing the aspect of "live" sports commentary, and what he believes was an "over-reaction" from the media to Howard Cosell's using the term "little monkey" during a 1983 NFL Monday Night Football game on 09-05-1983.

Dick Enberg had way to much common sense.
I'm black and I still love howard
I would have brought him back to sportscasting!
Good for you Herman Cain.
@@qbvick 😂😂😂
You can be black dumb. Hence your comment
who cares? like that's supposed to make it all legit? lmao
The Late, Great Dick Enberg!
Such a smooth, easy delivery too. Man the guy was talented for sure.
If you didn't know enberg then you didn't know dick.
Anyone who thought Cosell was racist , never saw him with Muhammed Ali .... They both had love and respect for each other... They joked and teased each other ....
Howard was the best, and I definitely miss him ❤️
Glad that p.o.s is gone !
overreaction is a GIANT understatement... ffs
Over*
Cosell was one of the first, if NOT the first to acknowledge Cassius Clay his newly appointed "Ali" name. Howard was unfortunately a casualty of P.C.
Today Cosell would have been canceled & Enberg as well for his double-down “monkey business” comment 🤷🏻♂️
Sad but true
there was a bit of a furor about it back in 1983, but can you imagine what would happen to cosell today? not career threatening, career ENDING
And that was the problem, no accountability
Very well said Mr. Enberg!!!!!
Wow...and I thought this was an exclusive issue since November of 2016...🙄🙄🙄
I wonder if this was the beginning of political correctness. What a wretched slippery slope this would end up being. Now, practically everyone goes out of their way to be offended at some comment
troll
Only Libtards getting offended brutha!!
And you made this comment 4 years ago.. 4 years later, did you expect it to go this far? Not sure if it was the beginning, but, it was the first of it I can remember.
DackupDoo I'm replying five years after your comment but I would say YES. This was probably the first PC bs that was mainstream. 🙏
The last comment on here was three years ago. I don't care. All I know is that Howard Cosell never had a mean bone in his body, okay? He was as white as a jew could be in those days. 'Muhammed Ali and Howard were good friends. All this "PC" correctness, it is so silly. I love Howard Cosell and always will. you guys deprived us of more great things Howard would have said for many football games to come, maybe even some Super Bowls, Shame on you jerks!! (and you know who I am talking about!)
Howard was a great advocate for many black athletes...Ali in particular...this was the start of PC...😔
One of the greatest Sportscasters of all time...".the greatest of all time". Taking the line from Ali. Political Correctness killed his career. If any has the time check out the Chase/ Pryor sketch on SNL. They don't make TV like that anymore
HOWARD wasnt even racist..i hate people thinking that
#DamnThatMF
Use a delay
Cosell wasn't racist --- he loved and admired Mohammed Ali like a son
1:40 SAVAGE OMLLLL
Howard was one of many entertainers. Phil Rizzuto another.
today, everything is scripted and bland.
cosell was let go because of this... muhammad ali, jesse jackson, and alvin garrett (the person in question) all came to cosell's defense. cosell on his next broadcast (before let go) said he had nothing but "respect" for alvin garrett. and it was later found that cosell (10 years earlier) had called mike adamle a "little monkey". adamle was white, what they had in common was a small build, garrett was 5' 7", and adamle 5' 8". both very small for pro football. bad choice of adjective? yes. howard cosell a racist? no.
Little monkey phrase was a thing for the old timers. It was used for white and black kids.
You can't even say Happy Holidays these days without offending some softie...
He was probably drunk. As usual.
It’s a shame that the good guys lost WW2
Cosell was the fuckin best!
HahahHhHhHhHh
The beginnings of cancel culture
Well, technically we’re all apes anyways. So what’s the big deal.
BS. SPEAK FOR YOUR OWN PEOPLE. BLACK PEOPLE ARE HUMANS💡
When are The Woke going to cancel his name
