jonathan Katz - I was there when it happened. Skydome (now Rogers Centre) 1993 world series game 6 against the phillies. for the entire bottom of the 9th everyone in the lower bowl at skydome was standing on their chairs. it was incredibile. never forget it.

Totally agree. Joe Buck just didn't shut up on radio but that's the one you usually hear not the NBC Scully call. Pat Summerall was close to Scully as an announcer and he shut up after Vaneteri's winning field goal in Super Bowl 36. He just said...."It's Good!" and let you watch the celebration.

The whole call is incredible…the building crescendo from the realization it has a chance, to a great chance, to a near certainty, followed by the confirmation of no flags, thus confirming the validity of the TD, with perfect fluidity and tone. Just textbook brilliance in the booth to match it on the field.

Great accomplishment, not the greatest call at all.

So many of you are wrong. Vin calling “ a black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South” will forever be more significant in the iconoclast over “Do you believe in miracles??” Both were tremendously important moments, each history defining, but Aaron at that moment, and Scully with those words, changed everything. Not just for sports but for an American culture coming to terms with itself.

Man... I'm sitting at my work desk, tears in my eyes, reminded in this very moment why sports are so amazing. They fill people with hope, in an otherwise seemingly hopeless world. They bring people, who have almost nothing in common, together. It makes us forget about our differences. That's just so crazy to me. Great video. I love sports.

Belmont Stakes 1973 "he's moving like a tremendous machine" secretariat breaks the world record and hasn't seen it broken since. 1.5 miles 2:24. Greatest horse that ever lived
And, the 1973 Preakness call, too. The Belmont call is absolutely great, but I think the call was bolstered by Secretariats earth shattering performance. The 73 Preakness had numerous sub plots during the race, and Anderson nailed them all.

Amazing. I would only add a few more to this list. Most importantly, I would add the final half-lap of Secretariat at the Belmont Stakes giving him racing's first Triple Crown in 25 years. It was well before my time -- but it is one of those few moments in history when we know that we were watching perfection.

Yes, that should be on here also. His son Joe of course admitted he copied his dad when David Ortiz(Mr. October now, sorry Reggie) hit that HR in Game 4 of 04 ALCS in the 12th inning. "We'll see you later tonight" Game 5 actually started late afternoon but he gets a pass. Such a great call by Jack and Joe.

I know NHL hockey isn't very popular, but look into Paul Kariya's goal in Game 6 of the 2003 Stanley Cup finals and the "Off the floor! On the board!" call and tell me it wouldn't fit on the list somewhere.
Me not being a hockey fan outside of the Stanley cup finals, it does elevate the moment like a great call should but it just isn't as good in my perspective as many of the ones showed in the video

@@samtyrrel5512 Henderson scores for Canada in the 1972 Summit Series Canada vs Russia with 19 seconds left in game eight I think would be the biggest hockey moment for Canada. Certainly the Miracle on Ice in 1980 was the biggest for the US in hockey. But the Henderson moment was such that people remember where they were and what they were doing when it happened. The country shut down so people could watch the game.
I love how sometimes understated less is more feels right, and sometimes over the top raw emotion fits. I think this is an overlooked part of sports, and someone should do a documentary on commentators. Great video

I still get goose bumps & emotional hearing that call 40 yrs later. I remember watching this game on TV as a 10 y/o & I will NEVER forget it.
I interviewed Tom Cheek on the radio in 1994 only a few months after the Jay's won back to back. After reading his book Road to Glory, I asked him about his call on Joe Carter's home run. He said in his book he tried not to get too choked up in '92 when they won the first World Series, so it wasn't an overly emotional call. As for Carter's homer, he said, after I played the audio on air, "that was pretty good, wasn't it?" Damn right. RIP Tom Cheek.
Kirk Gibson’s game winning home run vs the A’s and Eckersley. What a moment.. No one better to call that iconic home run than the great Vin Scully.
No disrespect to Scully, who is the hands-down GOAT among announcers, but Jack Buck's "I don't believe what I just saw!" on Gibson's homer was better.
John Hunter some videos splice the two calls together, which is awesome. Each announcer called it perfectly for their broadcast, buck for radio and scully on tv (the images told the story)

I also love Bucks call...but as great as his call is, dont think it can be in the category of greatest calls if you say the wrong team, saying the Tigers instead of the Dodgers...and unfortunately, in his great call of the Puckett homerun - "we will see you tomorrow night" - that also loses some of the greatness because he says Mitchell instead of Puckett...

These are some amazing calls. I wish Dave Niehaus would have maybe gotten a nod here - he’s in the MLB Hall of Fame and that guy could bring me to the brink of tears at any moment with how well he called games and he had some iconic ones to call (Ichiro’s Hit Record, Mariners first trip to postseason, “The Double”, first Father and Son back to back HRs... But every call on this list had a lot of greatness
I still tear up every time I rewatch the call of "The Double", and the only thing better would have been if he could have called Felix's perfect game, but I know he was giving a big ol' "My Oh My" up in heaven both that year and this year when Cal Raleigh sent us back to the playoffs

First time watching this video, I think how Vin Scully described Hank Aaron's 715th HR was absolutely classic Vin Scully, acknowledging the significant historical achievements, not just of him getting to HR no# 715, but the social significant ance as well.

Mike Joy's call of the finish of the 1998 Daytona 500 is another one that should be worth a mention.

With props to Verne Lundquist, the national radio call of Laettner's winning shot is truly classic. When the Duke star made the 15-footer, Caywood Ledford - the legendary Kentucky announcer - proclaimed "GOOOOOOD ! And Duke wins it, 104 to 103 ... and THAT IS WHY THEY'RE NUMBER ONE !!" That was to be Mr. Ledford's last call, ending a 39 year run with UK Football and Basketball.
We lost a legend in baseball lore. Henry Aaron passed away yesterday at age 86. RIP Hank, you will be playing for the biggest team of all.

Yep, agreed. I watched it live on TV and decades later I still get goosebumps. Definitely belongs, at least the "tremendous machine" call. Also a technical note: you ought not add a music track to these things. It makes it harder to hear but also competes unnecessarily with the calls themselves.
Also the disbelief in his voice when he says "Secretariat is all alone." Spinetingling call.
The 73 Preakness call by Anderson was even better. Give it a close listen. Much more action to cover, and Anderson didn't miss a second of it. He was brilliant. Secretariat's performance in the Belmont was beyond earthly, and made Anderson's call unforgettable.

I am 53 years old and watched 5 of these events live. Flutie, Gibson, Duke, Titans and Iron Bowl. The first two I mentioned, are vividly engrained in my head. Like yesterday.

A lot of great ones here but the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" call is absolutely timeless.
You know, I have seen that Hank Aaron highlight so many times in my life but every single time it ended with the fans running on the field to pat him on the back. I had never heard the rest of the call, and I have to admit the part about a Black man getting a standing ovation in the South choked me up.
The part about his mother “kissing him for all she’s worth” was the part that killed me! There’s something so raw about someone doing something remarkable, and getting the praise from the people that brought them into the world in the first place. God.

Jimmy Lewis it was bc flutie managed to escape like 3 guys trying to sack him, and still got the ball all the way to the end zone under pressure. Although I will agree that was an incredible play by the receiver to go up and get the ball.

This was perhaps the greatest call to one of the greatest finishes in the history of Colligate sports. "...they're not going to keep them off the field tonight...". It's right up there with "...and the band is on the field..."
I’m an Alabama fan. This moment STILL hurts to watch but wow...you can’t write this stuff. This game was amazing the whole way through and as a Bama fan I wouldn’t have it end any other way. This gave us. Our rivalry one of the single greatest moments in the history of sports. This was fantastic. Also THE BEST sign ever. Later that night at the FSU game a fan had a WE WANT BAMA sign and had crossed out Bama and written Auburn under it.
My 7 year old played too much PlayStation I guess, because right before the kick he said, if it’s short Auburn’s gonna run it back. Freaked me out totally.
