+ttlpwn34 Just clear driven speech, each word is an actual word, reminds me of George Carlin. People like this are so pleasing to hear. I actually listen to them to perfect my spoken English.
Those who have worked with costad say he has a memory like no other and I don’t doubt that a single word he recited about Cosell’s comments were not exactly what Costello actually said verbatim.
When I was 18 I was a elevator operator in his building. He came home one evening entered the car with other passengers had his big cigar in his mouth. As he was the last passenger to get off I had a moment with him and said humbly Mr Coselle. He glanced at my name tag and read my name and said " Good evening Philip. Philip, ..its hard to be humble when your perfect". and walked out. I'm 58 now.
I absolutely appreciate you spelling Philip correctly (with only one L) rather than that bastardized version (with two hideous L’s) that so many non-Philips seem to think is the norm.
If it was possible to ask Cosell a question now I’d really want to know from him whether he’d quit on football like Costas did. I considered Cosell a moral compass on sports. He cared about these controversies more than anyone else.
In the 1970's there was a real divide in America, I am not kidding: Do you like Howard? Do you HATE Howard? I found myself always on the "Like" side and I am glad I was. Howard was a great American character. Flawed as most are - probably alcoholic with a huge ego, but he had 'IT'. God Bless Him. Ha, I had arguments with my college roommates that almost lead to fights in 1978. Such was the power of Howard.
Not only does he have a classy storytelling style but the way he made it a point to make eye contact with both Conan and Andy while narrating it made him come across as a genuinely nice guy.
"So, you are the child who rhapsodizes about the infield fly rule." Wow, Howard Cosell is one to talk. If by "rhapsodizing," he means being pretensions and long-winded and using purple prose. Because he was the all time champion in that category.
According to the biography by Mark Ribowsky, Cosell was resentful of Jim McKay because it was McKay and not HE who Roone Arledge chose to televise the hostage situation at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Cosell became more outspoken about his religion afterward and never forgave Arledge for what he perceived as a slight. So that's where that story comes from.
Costas you son of a bitch, good to see you come down from network television and hang out with cable guys for a change. Also, that was a great set of hair on set.
Howard was always jealous of Jim McKay and felt Roone Arledge gave McKay the better assignments and never forgave Arledge for not putting him in the anchor chair when the Munich massacre happened
Cogently articulated eschewing verbosity ! Actually I was referring to Bob Costas, just the local sports guy on the local news, before his career took off as the play by play annoucer for the old Spirit of St. Louis, ABA basketball team.
I remember watching big sporting events on tv in the 70s and being so irritated with Howard. Everyone seemed to feel that way about him. The next day after the event people would say the game was great but that damn Howard Cosell wouldn’t shut up during the whole fricken game!! He could be very annoying.
In the 70s I was a kid and a Dodger fan (and also a boxing fan). I really hated Cosell - in the Dodgers Yankees world series (there were three), he was so biased to New York. He didn't have any respect for Fernando Valenzuela.
In his book, Al Michaels tells how Howard was great to work with, at first. But as time went on Howard became more and more of a pain to him and the network because he felt everything should be about him plus his drinking got out of control too. But ABC knew they couldn’t fire him because him and McKay basically MADE the sports division.
Cosell was an ass. But everyone wanted to hear his thoughts on MNF. Strange that he was so revered and hated at the same time. I read his biography. He was a very sad man with little life in him.
I could listen to Howard Cosell stories all day. He was polarizing, but he gave any event a "weight", a legitimacy.
Read Frank Gifford’s book The Whole 10 Yards, absolutely hysterical stories about his years with Howard
Damn, Bob knows how to tell a story! Hooked on every word he said.
+ttlpwn34 Just clear driven speech, each word is an actual word, reminds me of George Carlin. People like this are so pleasing to hear. I actually listen to them to perfect my spoken English.
+ttlpwn34 I was just going to say the same thing, I love the stories of people who are gone, but his delivery was great.
Those who have worked with costad say he has a memory like no other and I don’t doubt that a single word he recited about Cosell’s comments were not exactly what Costello actually said verbatim.
Unbelievable story teller.
Mesmerizing storyteller ... and loved how he also included Andy. This clip is too short!
I don't really watch sports but wow, his voice is just... Unique, I guess? it has that "newscaster" standing-out characteristic of it. Amazing.
Bob Costas? yeah he's a legend, pretty awesome
He's doing a Howard Cosell impression. Go check out some clips of him (Howard) he's a legend.
fantastic impressions....I'm very impressed with his cosell impersonation
One of a kind, and we all should miss him, those that remember and those that just missed.
Bob Costas = Master storyteller

That was a good Cosell impression lol
Great stories and top tier Cosell impersonation.
Those were two great stories from Bob! And…he was spot on with his Cosell impression complete with the verbiage Howard could do so well!
If it was possible to ask Cosell a question now I’d really want to know from him whether he’d quit on football like Costas did.
I considered Cosell a moral compass on sports. He cared about these controversies more than anyone else.

Howard Cosell is long gone and long forgotten.
Bob sure can tell a story
Not only does he have a classy storytelling style but the way he made it a point to make eye contact with both Conan and Andy while narrating it made him come across as a genuinely nice guy.
Andy is used to eye-contact with other men.
Just there usually is t much discussion going on…
"So, you are the child who rhapsodizes about the infield fly rule."
Wow, Howard Cosell is one to talk. If by "rhapsodizing," he means being pretensions and long-winded and using purple prose. Because he was the all time champion in that category.
pretentious and . ... - funny comment, cogently articulated young Rollo 1 3 1 !
Maybe he was sincere is saying he'd have a "fine career", he was just having a bad day and sounded sarcastic.
Every sports broadcaster does a Cosell imitation. It's required.
Followed by Vin Scully and Bob Uecker.
I miss Bob's talk show. Such a good show.
Wish there was a DVD collection for Later, fantastic show
I enjoy it on U Tube.
Great story teller as well.
Incredible Story and impression
This is talent. Youngsters, watch and learn.
He speaks really well
According to the biography by Mark Ribowsky, Cosell was resentful of Jim McKay because it was McKay and not HE who Roone Arledge chose to televise the hostage situation at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Also, that was a great set of hair on set.
Couldn't they get a booster chair for Bob like when he was hosting the Olympics with Chris Collingsworth!?
I remember Monday Night Football with Howard and Don Meredith trading shots. A lot of times that was more fun than the game.
5 ppl in the crowd knew who cosell is
Great story teller
David Letterman used to call Costas “the Jimmy Olsen of NBC Sports”
2:56 Oh I will Conan, I will
Howard was always jealous of Jim McKay and felt Roone Arledge gave McKay the better assignments and never forgave Arledge for not putting him in the anchor chair when the Munich massacre happened
He memorized all of that? Just like it was yesterday
Matdogg2k how do you forget that? That’s classic
I miss commentating for the nba
Yeah, you were great. Costas was pretty great, too.
As I get older, I realize Howard is way more talented, and much smarter, than little bobby cost us.
Priceless! LMFAO
U better be ready for some SNF when this guy starts taking.... Already miss him on Sunday night :(
Cosell was a giant. A GIANT.
Howard never played the game lol… but then we haven’t either… all three of us Conan 😂🙃
OMG would ever this country produce men with that eloquence? I hardly type not even speak.
Bilbo Baggins approves this message
LOL...nice story Bob.
Wow he's 63
conans like 54
Alexander Dimitrov his guest hahaha
+Yvonne Tn well he would look a lot older but he colors his hair
Conan I would like to carefully remove your scalp with surgical precision so that I can display it in my new apartment. Kind regards.
hmmm
+faboze It truly is a work of art.
+faboze Oh puppy, you've been watching too many Hannibal movies haven't you??
Costas did Cosell better than Turturro.
Cogently articulated eschewing verbosity ! Actually I was referring to Bob Costas, just the local sports guy on the local news, before his career took off as the play by play annoucer for the old Spirit of St. Louis, ABA basketball team.
YES!
People back then really talked like that?
+CarlosBeo No, just Howard.
there's no way bob remembered that rant word for word
Let's hear it for pirated movies!
haha! nice!
Japanese porn ain't creepy!

is he Greek?
+Di Angelo
Yes half Greek and half Irish.
In the 70s I was a kid and a Dodger fan (and also a boxing fan). I really hated Cosell - in the Dodgers Yankees world series (there were three), he was so biased to New York. He didn't have any respect for Fernando Valenzuela.
I guess he got over his pink eye...
I heard Howard Cosell was a hard person to work with, and frankly, many of ihs coworkers couldn't stand him
In his book, Al Michaels tells how Howard was great to work with, at first. But as time went on Howard became more and more of a pain to him and the network because he felt everything should be about him plus his drinking got out of control too. I hate that he said athletes instead of Israeli athletes when he was talking about the Munich Olympics
Howard was obnoxious but I'll take him over costas.
Cosell was an ass. But everyone wanted to hear his thoughts on MNF. Strange that he was so revered and hated at the same time. I read his biography. He was a very sad man with little life in him.
"First" cliche!
