@@Cuzjudd Good catch. I *immediately* thought of DiCola's Transformers The Movie score when I first heard this. DiCola himself mentioned that he was very influenced by '70s prog-rock like ELP, so everything came full circle here.
You should check out Chimp Spanner and Shattered Skies if you're into that sort of thing, if you haven't checked them out already. Or my band Telescopium (on soundcloud)! ;)
I think we can all agree that this is one of the best songs from the 10s. It's so complicated yet so catchy, so original yet it cites a lot of past music..amazing.
i thought this song was from the band "UK", i was surprised. Electronic drums, 80s sound, big prog influences on it (Rush, UK, Krimson, TOTO in the guitar solo!). HAKEN is now one of my favourite all time bands.
I was born in '85 so I already was drawn to this song. This was a first listen in this song, and I only recently started listening to this band, as a big fan of prog-metal or prog-rock music, I was led to this band trying to find more. I defiantly hear the 80s influence , really cool. And I agree, this defiantly reminds me of playing nes/snes when I was a kid. F-Zero was the first games I thought around 5:45 something.
This is a band I have heard spoken about over and over these past few years. I just never "got around" to checking them out. Been listening to random songs by them throughout the day after watching them jam with Mike Portnoy on the Cruise and, goddamn, they're good.
@@Amber57499 I am one of those. I love the vast majority of the Haken catalog, but I find Cockroach King a little cringe, too. So we exist:) But I am in the clear minority of Haken fans with this opinion.
@@anasabidofficial Thanks, I listened to them and love the recent album. Wish I could find a prog band that went all out on the processed/electronic percussion thing tho. Not prog but you might like Striker - Play To Win or Wolf & Raven - Ace Of Space if you like 80s stuff.
I know it’s not quite what you’re asking, but the definitive prog album with the distinct synth 80s sound, from the actual 80s, is Grace Under Pressure by Rush. They outdid themselves and really adapted and dove into the 80s with that album, to magnificent effect.
@@WowzaGuy I really like the Power Windows album, I'll have to check that one out. thanks! Of course Genesis and YES also had some cool stuff keeping some prog touches.
I don't think it's lame at all I think it's one of their most well written and energetic tracks, and the sounds of the 80s are amazing :P it sounds like a fucking epic video game level theme. That's not lame to me that's the epitome of awesome 🤘
Owner of a lonely heart? Seriously am I the only one who thinks they sound alike? If it wasn't for the fact that Yes released that song in 1983 I'd say there were inspired by them directly when they wrote this.
The entire album this song was from was loosely based on '80s prog, per the band's own words in pre-release interviews. So hearing the Yes influence (they cited Big Generator in particular) is by design.
I see some of the lyrics from "The Endless Knot" are also in here. Or maybe the other way around. Either way, I'm not sick of them one bit! Maybe, repeating their own song and putting it in with other old bands, this is their way of saying that they wish that they were in the 80s as well? Just a thought. EDIT: "The Endless Knot" came after this in the album, so maybe instead, that song reflects back on this one to increase the effect of time repeating itself.
MiniWheatDuo it kind of shows how times change. In this track it says “their designs, shifting frame by frame” but then when time passes and in the present i.e in endless knot the lyrics are “our designs, shifting frame by frame”. In 1985 it’s narrated how the whole cycle can be started again just by blurring the lines whereas in endless knot they’ve been caught up with the world so much that they’ve realised that this cycle has started to fail.
The intro is a mash of haken's own style, dream theater, and ofc the very start was definitely influenced by rush. But ofc, haken do have their own style and make their songs different to typical progressive stuff instead of copying other band's styles. Pure geniuses Haken.
I never listened to "metal" until now. Always disliked it, listened to a lot of Lo-fi and Jazz. When a friend introduced to me I was blown away. As a drummer this drew me in with the insane time signatures, and the mellow parts of this song are awesome.
Check out the album stranger heads prevail by thank you scientist And if you want more bands that fall more under prog metal (TYS isn't metal as much as I think you'd like them from you listening to jazz), I could offer some of those too
6:28 that guitar seriously reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it. Like, Blue Oyster Cult or Rush or something Glenn Tipton would make.
I magically grew a mullet and a neon colored track suit while listening to this song.

This is my favorite Haken song. Truly a masterpiece
I saw them here in Houston back in Feb, didn't like them at first and by the end of the show they got me. This song is awesome!
Same here! I love this one
Agreed
My favorite Haken song! So many Europe/Toto/80's OSTs/King Crimson/Dream Theater references... i love it!
Didn't get those. Can you list some, maybe?
Dream Theater for the prog metal technicality, King Crimson for vocals/lyric content, '80s bands for synth flourishes?
6:28 is Vince DiCola fool!
I hear early 80's Genesis for the synth intros... Peter Gabriel's "San Jacinto" for the verses...
@@Cuzjudd Good catch. I *immediately* thought of DiCola's Transformers The Movie score when I first heard this. DiCola himself mentioned that he was very influenced by '70s prog-rock like ELP, so everything came full circle here.

Synthwave Progressive Metal? O M G

Fenomenal track. I do appreicate how nostalgic it sounds.
People always seem to love 5:46 the best, but that bit after the solos at 6:28 is easily my favorite segment

Wait until a self-acclaimed genius replies how XXX technical death metal band makes this look Lil Pump level intelligent
You know it's a prog song when people highlight favorite parts of it with timestamps in the comments
specially when the timestamps are pretty varied
