In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm diving once again into the Daily Doug archives to release my reaction to 1985 from Haken. This reaction originally comes from my Fan Favorites series that I publish exclusively on Patreon. I have since heard this song within a reaction to their album, Affinity. And, so far...Affinity is my favorite of their albums. I hope you enjoy!

You got to do Elephants Never Forgets from their new album Fauna.
Doug will need to wear sandals to count the meter. 13 and 15 on Elephants where it was 6 and 7 on 1985…😮
Best track on the new one. And that’s not meant to diminish the rest of the album, either.
Ttaaaaaakkkkkeeeee, a look behind the curtain
The lyric "bound by gravity" is also the title of the closer on Affinity, which is a hauntingly beautiful masterpiece of a ballad. Would love to see a reaction/analysis video for that song!
Actually Bound by Gravity is Doug’s new favorite Haken track. He reacted to Affinity in its entirety on his Pateron.
@@Arrow2theACL happy to hear this, Bound by Gravity was the first track i fell in love with of that album, and to this day it still holds a good spot in my favourite songs from haken
I love that song
The instrumental break makes me imagine an arcade game about futuristic fighter jets. It gets me hyped every time. SO GOOD.
Gotta react to The Dear Hunter. They have a lot of cool orchestrated stuff in their music. Awesome singer too. I recommend the Act IV album most.
If anyone really digs this particular type of 80s sound and instrumentation, the song was very much influenced by composer Vince Dicola, particularly his scores to Rocky IV and Transformers the Movie. If you check out the track Autobot Decepticon Battle, you can easily hear a lot of the inspiration for the instrumental section.
Damn straight my man, the same applies for Escape, which has a huge tribute also
@@Jorduan100 Very true. I kept it to one choice as to not overwhelm anyone who actually wanted to look into it and since that one represents a lot of the major themes, it was what I went with. But you're totally right.
@@NaanProphet good to see there are others who appreciate it man! :)
His version of the Transformers theme - which I don’t think was used in the movie but you can find on UA-cam - is insanely good. It’s got everything a prog person would ever want.

Amazing song, by one of the best bands on the planet right now.
I had heard Cockroach King before and got really excited and tried to listen more Haken but was slightly disappointed. Hearing this I'm all in again, this was amazing. The fact that the riffs are so unexpectable that you get surprised all the time yet groove enough to pull you in.
This album also seems to have Einar Solberg of Leprous featuring in a song! Been listening to Leprous discography the past week.
Try Crystalized! It's on an EP so it doesn't get its fair amount of attention but it's one of their great epics.
@@MrDinofelis oof Crystallized is a fucking epic banger, reminds me of count of tuscany by DT although they are probably nothing alike :P
I was in the same boat and was super excited when I found this album! Easily my fave from them
You should do Messiah Complex from them next! It's an epic split into 5 parts and shows their heavy side very well
Just seen them perform the 5 songs live and it's absolutely amazing
It would be AMAZING!!
It also has callbacks. Picking special moments from every previous album in there!
@@Sk1pperCS every album?
@@mirkecWii I think so yeah.
I'm listening to a lot of prog rock/metal bands right now and while the majority of them are outstanding in terms of their talent and musicianship, Haken - for me - are just on another level. '1985' was (I think) the first Haken song I heard and it blew my 1980's-kid mind. Of course, that led me on to listening to 'Affinity' in all of it's glory, which led to me exploring their back catalogue and, just over a month ago, me seeing them play live In the Glasgow garage.
They are untouchable - their music is fun, thought provoking and unlike anything else out there. Long live Haken!
The first time that ive heard this masterpiece, i just thought: oh yeah, this is going to be a banger of an album. Also I can really hear 2 DT songs here:
- The instrumental part: its very octavarium progression.
- The final riff: sounds a little to You not me
OMG same here! I think it's a little tribute to Dream Theater. Awesome song!
Never thought that....I get a Saga vibe from this tune
Saga meets And then there were 3 Genesis...
Your channel was my first intro to this band with your Cockroach King Video, I then got the entire catalog and got to see them in Montreal the other day. Thank you Doug!!!
That’s so cool.
Hai Doug, I first hear Haken at your reacts - now i´m a fan . Thanks
Grüße aus Deutschland
Greatings from Germany
Dietmar
Hey Doug. Nice to see you at the show! Hope you enjoyed it! 🤘
Congratulations for your channel, Doug! It's always a pleasure to see your reactions/ analysis, by far the best ones on UA-cam!
PS: whenever you have time, check out THE CURTAIN, by Snarky puppy. Absolutely amazing.
Oh yeah. I love that thing. And Bill's solo is *chef's kiss*
Love this song. The live performance is killer
Haken imho is the leader of Modern Prog right now
Hell yeah. That was awesome. Reminds mind just a little bit of Caligula's Horse.
If anyone will be at the NYC show tonight, I will be there with Doug. You can’t miss us, come say hi.
I hadn't noticed this 'till I worked on a cover of this 5-6 years ago (it didn't go well), but the last chorus' vocal line is shifted forward an 8th note to start on 1 instead of the "and of 1" the first two choruses had, but it keeps the same melody. Something I always found really cool.
I think part of that "frameshift" is story-telling wise enhanced by that 3rd chorus vocal line shifting forward an 8th note in placement (in the 7/4 time signature of the chorus), but harmonically and rhythmically in itself staying (somewhat) the same.
So happy they are coming to Curitiba this year! I'll be surely in there to watch those lads!
Ah, Curitiba, cidade boa demais
This is a classic modern prog album in the making. Always reminds me of 90125 era Yes! Can’t wait to finally see them live this summer. Oh, and Charlie Griffiths solo album Tiktaalika is well worth a listen.
A great reaction to a great track Doug! Thanx so much. I have seen Haken on Cruise To The Edge many times and also in Toronto. I have had the chance to meet and chat with them a couple of times. great guys all and such a great show every time!
How about a "Metal Monday Finland Special?"
I would say a big YES PLEASE to one of those, especially if it were Barren Earth!!! 😀
Insomnium or Amorphis would make my day on this channel.
Haken's my favorite band, I love your content on them!
Just saw an interview for these guys new album should check it out on sea of tranquility great channel for learning about music would love to see you collaborate with them they do talk shows talking about many of the albums you’ve listened to and it would be cool to have you talk with them.
Hey Doug, love your videos! You always manage to convey the pure joy of listening to amazing tunes. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you check out the band Karnivool, either "Deadman" or "New Day", I think you'll love them!
Yay! This is my favorite Haken song.
Obrigado Doug, meu filho tinha me apresentado está banda mas eu dei de ombros, mas em uma de suas reações eu me deslumbrei.
Que banda ótima
About time you get to this album and song! To me their best album still but their latest is very close for top place. Great song with the retro feel and Rush influences here and there I felt
One of my fav tracks from one of my fav Haken albums!
Not too familiar with Haken, but I like a lot of this material. At 6:20, is that Klaatu's 'Little Neutrino' vocoder voice? (That would be 1976, I think.) The 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' section I sort of recognize. Great musicianship from all the band members, and very well-rehearsed.
You really need to do something off of Fauna. I would recommend Elephants Never Forget!
Quite a journey, loved it
Beginning @ 9:00, I cannot quite recall the design techniques utilized to do this type of design other than those cardboard kaleidoscopes we had as kids. However, those designs evolved in color. I like the green with black background here. It reminds me of the computer monitors we had back in the late 1980s. All hooked to the appropriate mainframes no less.
A cool little tune celebrating the year I graduated HS.
On october Ill see them for the first time...! on the new Tour here on Monterrey, México!
Celestial Elixir is my Haken favorite. greetings from Belgium "Y'all" 🙂
Doug reacted to all of Aquarius on his Patreon.
Fun fact: the Haken concert at the Keswick Theater was exactly one year ago today. Nice timing on the upload :)
Celestial Elixir is easily their best song.
Doug reacted to the entire Aquarius album on his Pateron.
I think you mean 'tied with Crystalized'. Not arguing so much as adding to your statement
Visions would like to have a word! Great songs all of them though!
Reminds me of Yes, Rush and Tool... crazy and interesting.
Love this tune.
I love this song!
Heck to the yeah.
Even a limited release can be limited to the number that was pre ordered in a fair period of time. Like a week or fortnight
This song reminds me of SAGA a great Canadian band from the 80's.
Haken, one of the top 5 bands in the world.
Check out more of their new album, some of the songs on there are incomprehensibly good
What Yes would have evolved to after "Drama", had the group stayed intact and Jon not re-joined. So very 1985-prog here.
Need to do another interview with the HAKEN guys for their NEW disc FAUNA. I saw them last week!
Love this track! And great reaction - though I wonder why you said “this may be where they snuck in an ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’” quite a few minutes in, when the very first riff is almost a verbatim quote (with uneven meter).
They went into about 4 minutes of Owner of a Lonely Heart live around there
Doug have you done any Threshold videos, the 1st 3 songs off the new album are magnificent.
I can hear Owner of a lonely heart at the very beginning. I love both songs so much and I know, some may say "that's not the real Yes", but don't care 😅
Yes!!
Despite not having a direct story like some of Haken's other albums, Affinity is honestly better done as a whole album rather than song-by-song. So many ideas are cross-referenced between songs, especially the big choruses. The chorus of 1985 in particular describes the whole album in that sense; their design, shifted song by song, until it comes full circle in the Endless Knot and Bound by Gravity.
Doug reacted to the entire Affinity album on his Pateron. It was amazing.
07:50
Why did they only use this theme once?! Sooo cool. 😎
Just one of the best prog metal song ever. What a journey.
Listen to Autobot/Decepticon Battle from the original 1986 Transformers: The Movie soundtrack and then this song. So many nods. Especially the "breakdown"/interlude in 1985.
Oh man! That’s easy! Moment solo 8:59-9:17 is restructured solo Dream Theater from “Octavarium” 16:46-18:29. Haken is very fans of DT 😉
When he says gezz at the end the meter is 7+6+5+4+3+2+1
You should definitely check out Mitch Murder. The KING of New Retro Wave!
Listen the band "Los Jaivas" song "Mira Niñita" is really amazing ❤
10:21 "Jesus!" 🤣
Play some ne obliviscaris Equss it might be a little heavy for you at time. but the redtir is gorgeous. The band has a a violinist. 2. Singers a ba

Guitars on this album are at times very inspired by 80's King Crimson. Think Dicipline era.
Definitely need to check out their latest album! It’s a great one
Heard their latest work "Fauna" yet? Epic album! A reaction to Nightingale or Elephants Never Forget would be amazing :)
Doug reacted to Nightingale last year when first released.
You grasped the metaphorical meaning of the song, the reinvention of oneself, the frame shift. but it's all framed (no pun intended) in the literal meaning of the song, which is about Artificial Intelligence and how, if at all, it is different from what we consider real intelligence. Granted, it's much easier to understand the literal meaning when you're listening to the whole album because it begins with a song called affinity.exe
Doug did react to 1985 again in context of the entire album on his Patreon.
You should do a Fauna reaction
Did you ever finish Prepetual Burn by Jason Becker?
Yeah more Haken
you need to hear aquarius
Doug reacted to Aquarius in its entirety in his Extended Play Lounge on Patreon. It was a fun one. My favorite episode. Check The Daily Doug Directory for a list of reactions: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UEvcDKlhqywcJsJobsUgrNi61NP3-c1KFHhgKoKubtg/edit#gid=0
Thanks. 1985? I was 20, ya spring chicken. ;) This band reminds me of Tool in a way. tavi.
Haken is the musical equivalent of the surrealist painters.
Great reaction I recommend you react to this video from the band that inspired Metallica to form in 1981 this band formed in 1976 and Metallica has covered many of their songs. Diamond Head - The Coffin Train animated version not the studio check the lyrics gave me goosebumps they get along with the video and the world today you will enjoy it.
Fates Warning, Part of the Machine. Enough said.
Cardiacs Sing to God album next?
React to Native Construct please, "Hell or High Water" or "Chromatic Aberration" would be good.
He already reacted to Mute and wasn’t a fan, unfortunately. Not the best introduction, but another go would be awesome! One of the best prog metal albums ever
@@stuartjennings9923 To be fair. That was early in Doug's journey with heavier music. I bet he would have a completely different outlook on it now, but that is really an album that deserves to be heard in its entirety.
[USERNAME] I compose as well.
I have generally liked the little I've heard of Haken. I like the style of music (big Dream Theatre fan), but his one I didn't connect with. I was 18 in 1985 and heavily into Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and similar.
Not that I don't like it, I can listen and enjoy. Just didn't connect with this one.
Thanks Doug. Appreciate you. 🙏
🤘😎🤘
Oh, hi Doug, big fan here. Well, if you allow me, I’d like to recommend you a song to be reacted. This is a song composed by Steve Vai, but this version is from the CD/DVD “Sound Theories Vol. I & II.” The cool think about this song’s version (compared with the original release) is that this version was recorded with the “Metropole Orchestra (a jazz and pop orchestra based in the Netherlands).”
Well, without any further ado, here it is:
Steve Vai - Bledsoe Bluvd. (Feat. Metropole Orkest) - ua-cam.com/video/Nvh3bN22-MY/v-deo.html

I’m glad i found Haken. DT is so repetitive nowadays. The difference after the drummer change is unreal.
Sound like tool
can u pls do less the " i m liitle bored now, so i ll read the lyrics" thing , and analyze more these beautiful arrangements, and chord progressions, melodies etc ? You can help people enrich their own composing with your great knowledge and perfect pitch etc , through beautiful songs like this one
