When I was a senior in high school in the spring of 2002, this is the very first 70s Hollywood Squares episode I watched on Game Show Network after my track & field meet
In real life he was anything but a riot. On this show, he was simply delivering the lines that had been written for him in advance. In real life he was a nasty old queen.
When he was drunk he was nasty. You're making him out to be worse than he was. Also, I don't believe most of the quips were written by others. They often were formulated by the stars in advance, however. @williamanthony9090
During spring break 1972 I went to my great aunt's house in Warren,TX,about 45 miles north of my hometown Beaumont. We turned on the TV and picked up a station in Green Bay,Wi.They were showing The Hollywood Squares.
Would you believe most of them were scripted? He could deliver a line like very few others. One of his best was when asked, “Why do motorcyclists wear leather?” “Because chiffon wrinkles.”
Love watching The Hollywood Sqaures and used to stay home from school to watch Paul Lynde make me laugh ! I was bullied in Jr High and high school grade school too and in High School used to stay home and watch the show and Ive always looked to humor to cope !
To me, announcer Kenny Williams was one of the best announcers. He has often overlooked and underrated, but I loved his voice when he asked for shows like Hollywood squares, gambit, or highrollers. Rest in peace Kenny.
Watching any of these old episodes of Hollywood Squares its interesting to note that most of the prize sponsor companies are completely out of business today. PanAm, TWA, Kimball, Pontiac, S&H, Western Auto, Tappan and I was going to write World Book Encyclopedia but having checked its still in business (in its 100th year) selling encyclopedia sets and other educational books.
@6:40 Amanda Blake of Gunsmoke fame, nice to see her before her untimely death from HIV/Aids, some said she dated Rock Hudson. But it brought a rapid awareness to the illness. RIP Ms Kitty, we'll always love you.
Man! Now I want some Snickers peanut brittle SO BAD! 🤪 Also, did you know that World Book is the only on-the-shelf encyclopedia that's still in print? 😎
Hello - I know this was posted a while ago, so you might not see this. My dad was on the Hollywood Squares in either 1971 or 1972. He passed this last November and my brother and I have been searching for his episode. He won the Secret Square who was Vicki Lawrence. I have combed through everything on UA-cam, but cannot seem to find his episode. Do you know where I might be able to find it? We miss my dad terribly and this would mean the world to us. Thank you!
I'm in the same boat. I'm not too crazy about modern television or celebrities, either. I wasn't born until 1982, but for some reason, I enjoy shows that were before my time.
I was age 11 in 1972. I watched this new as a child and teen during 1970s, during summers, as there was no school. I always thought the emcee looked like Adam West. Harvey Korman would still be on Carol Burnett show.
Where did you find this? I'm curious because my dad was a contestant in '73/'74 from what I can put together and I would love to track down this episode, but can't seem to locate it.
I was only 4 at the time, but i think he won a living room set: couch, chair, table... and I distinctly remember an electric organ. I think it was daytime because my family recalls my dad didn't look so great because they were out drinking the night before. :D
With the passing of Peter Marshall (8/15/24) the only people still living from this episode (contestants not included) are Doc Severinsen who is 97 years old and Karen Valentine who is 77 years old.
Why was Hugh O'Brian not mentioned in the cast of "In Harm's Way" by Otto Preminger? He is seen in the opening scene as the lover on the beach with 'Beth Edington.'
At 6:45, Peter Marshall asks Amanda Blake a question about his own baseball playing son, who was playing with the Chicago Cubs at the time--Pete LaCock. (She guessed the San Francisco Giants.) ⚾️

She had her moments didn't she? An understated cutie pie, nice body, great smile, good wit, she deserved a lot better than the second rate career or third rate career that she was assigned to, she was just a little too offbeat looking I think and I will add a little too smart to suit the elitists I don't know maybe I'm getting too deep here but I agree she was beautiful. Or is beautiful, is she still living? What a horrible question to ask, I heard somebody say once it's so and so still alive and they said yeah but their career died a long time ago. she was kind of stereotyped as they as the butter brand idiot you know with a heart of gold and there wasn't that big of a call for that I think Meg Ryan cornered the market on that and you know where she today in the in a Redbox in some side dark corner of purgatory that nobody ever rents the crystal will be doing a guest appearances at car sales in about 5 years. With about 3 people waiting in line to get their autographs and they'll be Phil Collins in the car outside waiting to take them home Bruce Willis will be at home with food cooking on the stove for all of them.
'72 was the last year of active combat operations in 'Nam. Things were winding down. Plus who knows what his connections were? He also could've been in graduate school through a military program like my dad was in the Air Force. Guys like that generally never got thrown into combat.
Seeing the cast on this show explains why they prominently used Whoopi Goldberg for the 1999 edition, because they felt the older seasons were too "white."
Fantasy Hollywood Squares cast: Robin Williams, George Carlin, Paul Lynde, Jeff Ross, Joan Rivers, Greg Giraldo, Steve Martin, Kathy Griffin, Dave Chapelle

It's so fun to find childhood memories on youtube - whenever it happens to me I save it...
What a great show. Watched it every day. Paul lynde was the main reason why, he was a riot. Back when tv was great
In real life he was anything but a riot. On this show, he was simply delivering the lines that had been written for him in advance. In real life he was a nasty old queen.
P00p0ppppp00
Richard Dawson does an impersonation of Paul on Match Game well.Pat Harrington does a pretty good impression of him as well on Match Game 73.
Paul Lynde starred FLAMBOYANTLY on the "Hollyweird Queers". HA, HA

Paul Lynde cracks me up. Best zingers.

Classic game show that has stands the test of time, this one is no exception.
I love how in this episode that the writers of the show included a question including one of Peter’s sons. I mean that is awesome!
Thank you, Adam, for adding these classic episodes!
I love it when Peter Marshall says "either across, [mumble, mumble] or diagonally".
He says, "Either across, up-and-down, or diagonally."
Harvey Korman imitating Paul Lynde's "it's either Arlene FRA-HAN-CIS..." joke is hilarious!
I thought it odd that the camera didn't show Lynde after Korman's impression.
Loved this show as a kid teenager and young adult ! Love watching it on You Tube now !
Thank you. Good old memories......
That French collared smoke colored striped shirt Paul Lynde had on was the fashion in the early seventies.
😂😂😂 I know! I was there. 😂😂😂
Old TV shows are a hell of a lot better than today's so called shows.
Lynde Rules!

I'd forgotten how gorgeous Karen Valentine was/is!
josiemax Tight, I mean tight...there was a t.v. movie she was in sporting a bikini. Holy shit that was a treat.

Vicki McMillen, I too love him. And now I appreciate how handsome he was.
He ran in the opposite direction from women. ;-)
That doesn't mean women can't love him.

And those crappy Datsun B2-10s. The car prizes were awful with Chevy Chevettes and Datsun hatchbacks.
IN the early 70's a Chevy Vega was given away in every show, possibly the worlds cheapest car, a piece of junk.
I learned to cook on a Tappan cookstove!

@@artistamisto Datsun B210s we’re actually pretty good cars for the time. Much better than American subcompacts like the Chevy Vega, etc.

Thanks very high quality.
I was that Marine Lieutenant! What a memory! ~~Pastor Bob Fox
Did it all seem unreal 3 days later? How long did your Vega last?
Why does Peter Marshall call you Joe? And what did happen to the Vega? Did you get 50K miles out of it?
I looked look to humor to cope and Paul Lynde helped lift my moods and helped me laugh during my depression which he still does ! R I P Paul !
Why do you always tell your troubles on social media, On almost every show you come on here and moan about your troubles.
Joey cracked me up: "Send the Lieutenant up here and send Amanda Blake down there".
It sounds in character!!
Not the smartest thing I've ever said. Lesson: Don't try to be a comedian while on live TV!

No one on this show has known how to play tic-tac-toe. You start in the middle square. You respond in a corner square.
@keithpurduecroft I get the impression that at some point the rules were changed so that your first move couldn't be the center square.
