Just a middle aged woman w pmdd currently on her period getting overly emotional over this video because I'm just so darn grateful for this new wave of female athletes talking openly and scientifically about everything menstruating! Thank you Philly for reminding u that while we have the right to feel cursed by our menstrual cycle, it is essentially a sign of a healthy, functioning body and that is something to feel grateful for and amazed by!

I’m so happy that pro runners are discussing this topic openly! I’m approaching 60 and am post menopausal. Nobody could have told me how much weaker I would feel (Yes, I know I need to lift weights and eat protein 🙄). Thank goodness MHT is becoming more common. We need more older women runners discussing this (Most out there are male). Females are told to hang up their running shoes. 😢

THANK YOU for making this video. The menstrual cycle is not talked about nearly enough. Globally we are under-educated on the menstrual cycle's affect on our bodies (in relation to running, exercise, or just every day life) and we need more large creators like you having this discussion. Thank you for being a voice for all of us who menstruate.

Post-menopausal and on HRT - I miss my hair and waistline but definitely don't miss constantly changing hormones/PMS/menstruation (I had forgotten about the sore boobs until you mentioned it). Also, as an athlete don't let where you are in your cycle on race day/a hard training day psych you out - I set a nearly 30 minute Half-Ironman PR on Day One of my cycle, which was always my worst day.

Whoo!! I love any videos like this. I'm a newly qualified doctor and really interested in pursuing obs and gynae (great explanation of the hormonal cycle btw!).
One thing I'd love to add about supplementation you mentioned at around 26mins: a lot of the time your iron will come back as "normal" because the "cut-off" used is 15 for ferritin: however, athletes (and runners especially) need higher levels of ferritin to maintain performance. So, if your ferritin is even on the lower level of normal, it's a great idea to push for supplementation.

I'm a 21yr old male college runner but also a biologist and I will say how important it is to let your body go through its natural processes and cycles. People who don't study biology have no clue just how many millions of things need to line up perfectly for you to even be born, let alone, continue living. The complexity of proteins, energy storage, compounds, and chemicals that are in your body are at a level I have trouble comprehending. I guess what I'm trying to say is that our bodies are PERFECTLY made so changing any aspect of it will throw other parts off balance. Our bodies are truly amazing

TW - This has helped me so much. I had my first period in 7 years over the weekend just gone. My hormones have been completely unbalanced from restriction. Having my period come back obviously mean all this good work I have been doing for the past 8 months has finally paid off. However, mentally having a period felt like I had lost control again, not having a period kind of felt like a badge of honor in regards to my ED.. It is a whole thing, and kind of crazy this is/was my perspective.. but this video has 100% made me feel more at ease knowing the importance of my menstrual cycle and benefits to performance through running. Honestly, I am 27 and I did not know any of this, I have completely avoided the conversation or knowledge on it. I was totally in denial - Thank you x

Thank you for this video. This information is so important, it needs to be it there in an accessible format and you delivered that.
I started training in alignment with my cycle about 2 years ago. It made a huge difference.
I trained for 3 spring marathons in the last 3 years, once without taking my hormones into account and then twice with cycle alignment.
The results: 3:51, 3:29 and 3:27. The first and second training cycle had the exact same mileage in the 16 weeks leading up the marathon, 821 miles, but the way I structured the training was quite different. I synced my deload weeks with my period so that I wouldn't have my biggest weeks when I feel the worst.
Most training plans you can download have a 4 weeks cycle of 3 weeks building and 1 deload. If your period is of average length like mine, just make sure to start the plan in sync with your cycle.
Also, fuelling my training better and focusing on energy availability made a huge difference. I know that some foods make my symptoms worse, e.g. eating pulses make the bloating worse so I'm avoiding them close to my period. Tracking food intake and symptoms helped me to find trigger foods. It also helped me with race performance if I avoid them in the days before the marathon.
Thank you for the tip with eating fresh ginger. I'll have to look into that.

    • @edithgruber2125
      @edithgruber2125 6 днів тому +1

PS: after commenting, I went back to my notes and I found that my last three marathons were on day 23, day 7 and day 14 of my cycle. So the vastly different results were not only because of the cycle alignment of my training but also the first one occurred during the late luteal phase, the second in the follicular and the last around ovulation. The latter two, I obviously felt much better.

As someone who trains for running and triathlon races and has gradually increased training volume over the years, I am very glad that my (male) coach who I have been working with for a few years now, has me track my menstrual cycle as well. I never did it before. But for the past few years I have monitored and learnt to understand the symptoms, pay attention to my body signals and know how to navigate through the "fun" phase better. As for training during the "fun phase" - I keep it easy/at low intensity. Even though I may not feel motivated to train at all, I find myself getting off from the sofa, make it to to the gym/or pool or put on my running shoes and after 10 minutes or so into the training, I feel a sense of relief and I ALWAYS feel much better when I finished the training compared to the hours that I spent on my couch before.

Great job with this video😊. For iron deficiency, I am not a doctor but am experiencing this as well. I recommend taking iron (supplements or oral medication) not together with coffeine and dairy products, as the absorption of it won't be optimal. I personally take it together with vitamin c. It's a kinda lenghty recovery journey and if oral intake doesn't improve your situation, possibly iron injections or infusions can help (of course only a physician can confirm those are feasible options for each case, as they aren't pleasant and without side effects). Take care, Phily! :)

This is a very well done video, and I agree it's an important topic. I've always viewed my period as a sign that my body is working properly. Generally I feel pretty alright physically regardless - I do retain a little more water around my period. If I do end up with any cramping (for me this is usually related to stress), I feel much better being physically active. That said, when the times comes that it naturally disappears forever (I'm 46 now), I will breathe a sigh of relief. I have always loathed dealing with it, and will probably never be able to love it. The best I can manage is a sort of grudging acceptance.
On a side note, my doctor diagnosed me with iron deficiency a few years ago and put me on a supplement. They had me come back in for a blood test after three months to make sure it was working (if it didn't, it would be a sign that something bigger was going on), and then after another three months to check that the maintenance dose was correct.

I think female athletes' attitudes to periods depend a lot on how light or heavy their periods are and also how predictable (date/heaviness). This goes to everything from impact on performance and stamina to food and hydration to actually dealing with the bleed if it coincides with a race. Plus state of mind is a factor - for example a lot of runners want to compete in briefs rather than shorts, which can be difficult if you have a heavy period and especially if it's a long race.

YES! Thanks for bringing up PMDD. I went years and years and years knowing something was wrong, just not what. It wasn't until I was aged 32, and a comedian brought it up randomly, that it clicked. So it really, really matters that people talk about this.
The numbers you bring up here, 1.6% of the general population, increase massively when you look at the population that has ADHD and/or autism. Research is very sparse on this, but I've read and heard anywhere between 60% to 80% of those who have a uterus and ADHD and/or autism suffers from PMDD. I'm just bringing that up in case could be a fact that sways anyone to actually go and find out whether they have one or the other (PMDD, ADHD, autism) - there seems to be a good chance that if you have one, you have the other.
And, if anyone is dealing with PMDD, here's what's helped me loads: hormonal patches, the same type that's used to in HRT to ease the symptoms of menopause. It's been a game changer to ease my symptoms of PMDD, more so than anything else I've tried.

This is important! Periods are important vital signs for menstruating humans. Being a long distance runner, I’ve had my own struggles with my body and regulating my cycle. Recently I was diagnosed with PMDD. Being a woman in America, it’s horrible being diagnosed with something because we all know damn well no one is out there researching women’s bodies in the same way we research men’s bodies. Anyway, In doing some of my own research, I’ve found that undiagnosed ADHD can exacerbate PMDD symptoms. I can’t get in to see a specialist about ADHD for 5 months so we shall see. PMDD is pretty debilitating though and I’ve had to miss a lot of my life and work because of it.

The average age of menstruation beginning is around 12-14, then perimenopause on average starts by the mid 40s, and the average age of menopause is 50, with females in the UK/USA living to about 80-82. I guess based off those averages menstruation lasts almost half your life but thats if you’re average. Many, many women stop menstruating far before 50-52 or have irregular periods for many years before they’re fully menopausal. The best years of ideal fertility are not typically half your life, which was not what you were addressing in this video, but it should be noted.

Have you looked at how injury risk varies through the menstrual cycle? When I first started looking at this to help me coach my athletes it seemed that there was evidence of joint 'looseness' and injury risk during the follicular phase (which is less than helpful if its the phase where an athlete feels most productive) - but the newer studies seem to be suggesting that injury risk is highest during the luteal phase.

Last week of my cycle is SHIT. I sometimes stop wondering why the hell I feel so miserable, weak, then look at my calendar - oh, that's why! Every time.
On top of that I'm actually bipolar type 2, and before medication PMS could trigger a full blown journey to depression for a couple of months if I was not careful enough and overload my body and mind with something. Now it does not happen anymore, God bless proper medication, but keeping it low is still a good strategy for me. No intense training, if at all - sometimes being a couch potato for a week scratching my dog's belly, keeping my mental state intact.

Well past menopause now. Did not even realize I was going through it, because I was, honestly, running. Having the little bit of pudge issue, but honestly it’s not that bad. Lack of motivation is truly the issue.
I find it very disheartening, that societies. (pretty much all of them) treat biology (especially female biology) as dirty or taboo. Medical research, barely considers women worth the time or effort. Medications are not adequately tested with women in mind. Women in pain are treated as hysterical or mental instead of physical. 😡

I hate having to bring this up: but for those in the USA, please, please, please do not use online apps to track your period. There are too many people who want to control women’s bodies and they should not have any access to this information. I am not being paranoid, this is happening in a number of states.

I worked in a primary school aged boarding house (private) and was super open about talking about periods to the boys and girls. With the girls it was generally the more practical things like what to do if you start in the middle in the night (100% wake the staff up, it’s totally fine) or at any time. To be totally open about which of the girls had started so that girls knew who they could talk about if they wanted to talk to a peer and if they were ‘scared’ to talk to staff, which peers they could talk to, but also make sure that the girls knew they could talk about it without any fear. I also talked openly with the boys so that they understood what girls went through and tried to facilitate a situation whereby the girls (who’d started and hadn’t) and boys could talk about it. It was interesting and both genders were pretty open to talking about it without any ‘yuckness’.
