Major smiles 🥰 As a kid in 1972 we took the train tour through Copper Canyon and stayed a few days there. One afternoon we met up with some Rarámuri kids and spent about an hour playing a pick-up game of soccer. It was an amazing time, and a reminder that we can connect with others, have fun, and build connections and memories. I credit that experience as one of the reasons I became an anthropologist. Thatnk you for this beautiful video!

I am very happy that you were able to experience that. I am very familiar with the area. For you to be able to do that is wonderful. When my son graduated from high school I took him to Mexico to see the country in a different way. I have friends all over Mexico so I thought I would introduce him to them. He was absolutely stunned by the beauty of the Copper Canyon. We went to many parts of Mexico that didn’t have a tourist traffic. We spent some time in Creel and he found a book n the Tarahumara people. He even found a book on the language. It is an extremely rare language spoken by few. Over the next week of travel he read the book and learned enough of it to be able to communicate with the locals. He already spoke several languages including Spanish. I am fluent in Spanish and Portuguese so I got him started with other languages. It was one of the best times that I have ever had with my son.

Im very happy you guys got to learn the Taraumara language, sadly many native languages speakers don’t speak anymore since Spanish became the main language and the people speaking those languages became discriminated and ashamed for being who they are, that happened to my father that didn’t learn Otomi and therefore I couldn’t learn it myself. Still I hope more families keep their languages and cultures and be proud of who they are and their ancestry.

Overweight, I started running with a recommended stabilized running shoe. I ended up with a stress fracture in one of my metatarsals. After reading Born to Run, I very carefully started running barefoot. All the issues I had in my hips and knees completely went away. I started participating in triathlons. Not having to put on running shoes for the last segment shaved a minute off my time. People along the way gave applause to the "barefoot runner". That was always a nice pick-me-up for the end of the race.

In addition, my wife and I would run local trails. There was heavy vegetation and many rocks and one or both of us would often trip with our standard running shoes. We purchased five finger shoes and once we were used to them, I noticed that we rarely tripped on the trails. I recognized that the five finger shoes allowed for greater sensory input and I could feel if there was a root over the top of my toe and I had enough reaction time to adjust my foot avoid tripping. I got rid of all of my standard shoes and I only by zero drop shoes, including dress shoes.

Switch to barefoot-shoes. It takes time and training because you have to adapt to a new running style but it can literaly fix your feet so that you can run without pain again.
Or just read born to run to get an impression :)

They’re running on hard packed dirt, with great form. Running in traditional western running shoes on hard concrete is totally different.
The other commenter has suggested Born to Run, I’d also suggest Born to Run 2, this book focuses on how you run, properly and safely.
There are lots of footwear options too, from companies like Altra, their shoes are more of a foot shape. Sandals from Luna are also an option too!
      Hope that helps

Amazing to see you in a really beautiful landscape running with the Tarahumaras. I love your authentic style of story telling. A great inspiration fo rme and so open-minded and funny. I love the images of hidden "treasures". Pathways to small villages. It is a different perspective on life to see how they live in balance with nature. Ah...it is called pinote. I had heard about this drink. How I see it is much better than toxic engery drinks. I was amazed by these world class runners. I am not a runner, more a walker and traveller through life. Wow, Respect, that you stand the heat. I love those huarraches. I wear them all the time, when it was hot. I miss them here in Germany. They were so comfy. Funny to see, that they were made of old tires. I had seen them orignally, when I had been there. I recognized your hotel in Creel.
From 2009 to 2013 I had lived in a small town Ciudad Cuauhtemoc. I taught German as a foreign language and one year basic English in a private school. A three hours drive to Creel. I know this area, this region, so well. In my memories it was a different experience to see Mexico in different shapes. So breath-taking, as I have seen in your video. Before I have only known palm tress and beaches, like in Cancun. So I had been there in the "barrancas de cobre" and went by train, el "Chepe", through the mountains to Los Mochis at the Pacific ocean in 14 hours. I love the valleys and the high mountains, like you have shown in your documentary. Well done. So wonderful to see this beauty of nature. I bow in respect for their motivation how they move over the many ways and carry a huge package on their back. And yes, I got the feeling too, that the people in Mexico welcomed me like friends. Of course there are a few exeptions.
Since I was a child, I love adventures. In Mexico I had quiet a lot. What would be my next one? Hahaha...vamos nos.
Thanks y lot sharing this story and of course to the NatGeo team to make this video so interesting and inspiring to watch. I keep on track to see you in the next one.

My younger brother hiked the Copper Canyon in Mexico many years ago with some friends. They were running low on food and one of the male Tarahumara runners ran up to the top and bought a young goat. It was fighting him and slowing his progress, so it killed it, dressed it out and brought it into their camp. A month or so after this trip my brother came down with spinal meningitis and the doctor thought he probably got it from drinking the water loaded with heavy metals in a mining area of the canyon. It took him about 2 yrs. to fully recover and still has some hand tremors even today. This video was tremendously well done, I just had to send it to him. I have been watching your videos for about 2 years or more and you just keep getting better with each video.
