  • A short express running session with the UK's fastest steam locos!
    Correction: It was the Flying Scotsman to first exceed 100mph, not Papyrus!
    Thanks for watching!

    I prefer the LNER flying Scotsman than the BR livery that she has today

      I don't know. I like it in BR Green. But I feel it's more cahracterful in LNER green. The problem is though is that she has a double chimney, which she kinda needs as it's more efficient and I think due to mainline regulations (I may be wrong though). Because of that she also needs the smoke deflectors, I first saw her in LNER Green a few years before her overhaul and she also had the smoke deflectors and double chimney and it felt weird seeing her like that as she never had such features when in LNER days, but being like 7 at the time, this really didn't bother me and I quite liked it. And sadly for her to be truly authentic she needs to be in BR Green.

    SAMs trains , a few things. this list was pretty awesome. the 9 f's class was everything you said but I honestly prefer them in their black livery. Also I would of liked to see a class40 in this list but that's okay considering that you featured city of truro's class. I look forward to seeing more videos like this. The getting started video was really helpful, and I really want go start on a model railway .

    A great and quick running session, flying Scotsman was the first official 100mph record breaker but a couple of years later papyrus broke the record by hitting 108mph, breaking flying Scotsmans record. Keep the faith - Callum

      Also The LNER A4 Pacific Silver Link did break all records by going at 112mph but afterwards one of the A4s named Silver Fox broke that record and exceeded by a bit by doing 113mph but later on a few years later the LMS Coronations Scot 6220 broke the record by doing 114mph

    this video got me to get out my book on high speed trains through the ages from city of Truro to the bullet trains in Japan
    aparently on the 6th June 1932 no5006 Tregenna Castle whilst taking the cheltenham flyer covered the 77.3 miles from Swindon to Paddington in 56 3/4 minutes and at an average speed of 81.7 mph and for 28 miles they never went less than 92 mph
    "To the end of British steam, the start-to-stop average speed registered that afternoon was never excelled by any regular service train."

    Great fun, I love Silver Link, she looks stunning :) I think the City class did make the 100, Coronations are also beautiful, Merchant Navy class regular performers Waterloo main line at 80-90mph. Scale speeds can be calculated based on measuring your track, I bet you had a scale speed of well over 100.

      City of Truro is recorded as doing that, but it was basically a guy timing quarter of a mile posts. Not reliable, especially given watch technology at the time. Flying Scotsman was the first to 100% definitely officially do it

    I can't decide between the A3 and the City class. I love the A3's style and overall appearance, but that City class has some real gilded age charm. The livery on that Merchant Navy you were showing off is lovely as well. Can't beat BR blue.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 років тому

      Yeah you're absolutely right - they're both fantastic, but for very different reasons - the charm of the city class is very rare in my opinion!

    Flying Scotsman was the first official authenticated of going 100mph when she was an a1. Papyrus was the prototype for the a3 modifications. And was able to do, um I think 108. Which was the highest speed for an umstreamlined steam locomotive

    The Flying Scotman Wasn't Actually the first steam locomotive to reach 100 MPH, it was the 3rd, the 1rst was a german secret locomotive, the 2nd was City Of Trouro, Coty Of Trouro's top speed was 102 MPH, that was 30 years before The Flying Scotsman!

    Hi Sam, nice vid, love a loco in full cry...
    As for City of Truro... well thats a thorny issue, even between us GWR types. For everyone who claims she couldn't have done it you will find one who will claim she could. I tend to fall into the later camp. Reasons? well a lot of the ex-drivers who claim they couldn;t have reached those speeds drove the Cities in the 1930s; long after they had been booted off the fastest trains by the four cylinder 4-6-0s and were ending their days on cross country routes and secondary trains before withdrawal and as they were considered out dated by then were not always in the best condition.. When the claimed 102mph was reached in 1904 they were new, and in peak condition. They had a reputation of being damn fast back in those days. Rous-Martin, the guy who calculated the 102mph was a respected railway man. Her wrote for The Railway magazine, and timed a lot of trains, often at the request of various companies to evaluate their locomotives performance while in service. I believe the NRM has his notes these days and his calculation on the City of Truros speed have been validated. Of course thats if his timings were right in the first place. He recorded several other fast runs behind City class locos, with others being clocked at around the 95 - 97 mph mark, often with heavier trains than that the Truro was hauling that day. Considering Truro was only pulling a very light train, four boogie mail vans, and was on a steep, 1:60 downhill bank at the time I reckon the 102mph was entirely possible.
    However the speed was calculated by passing times, not by dynameter readings, and errors in timings could have been made, so the truth will never be known, but it does make for interesting discussions in the pub though.
    Have a great week mate
    Jon
    PS, You a bit of a jazz fan? noticed your playing a lot of jazzy stuff on these vids.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 років тому

      Hi Jon, thanks very much for the comment mate!
      Yeah it's definitely a thorny issue - but you made some very good points, I never considered their degradation due to age before - maybe I'm persuaded!

    You are costing me money & space. I live in the colonies, & do you know how hard it' is to find British trains here. I fell in love with the A4s you run, lucky to find the blue scheme. I have to repaint Thomas couches. I live in an apartment (flat) & I ran out of room for trains. You see I'm a Delaware & Hudson RR modeler. Yes being American I have long trains I run at my train club. Mind you at the club you must at least run 2 engines to pull a drag, hills require a helper or 2. For the club a small train 30 or so cars. Our rr product is steel so a coal drag of 100 hoppers is not usual to see. I enjoy your reviews on the models you showcase.

    The City of Truro actually did go 100mph as the first, because according the the Great Western Railway history, it fixed the record before the Flying Scotsman, in 1904 or something, but it was never officials recorded , and therefore it was neglected to be the first.

      Reason I asked Sam, when I came into the hobby, toward the end of last year, I bought the 60022 tender driven model off ebay as a non runner. I've picked at it over the months and finally she's not far off running again. The final hurdle is finding replacement drive wheels off the loco. At some point a screw has been broken off in the centre wheel. I have no paperwork for her so part numbers have been difficult to find. I have bought a couple of random sets from various places, but had no luck! Saw yours and got quite excited. lol
      Thanks again mate. I'll keep looking
