Thanks for posting this video. I´m a jazz drummer and the style of Virgil is very far from my musical interests. But I follow him and a lot of jazz drummers use to say me: - Javi, why are you so interested in this metal/fusion drummer? The answer is very easy: 1) He is the most advanced drummer of the planet 2) His traditional grip left hand is PERFECT 3) 70% of his playing it´s boring to me but suddently he surprises me with a brilliant idea that can be considered genial. 4) His intention and groove is brutal 5) His independence and coordination 6) In his playing he never or almost never falls in "one", so his comping or fills has a lift "swing" funk feel that make them very sophisiticated and tasty. 7) His mastering on odd meters 8) I don´t mention double bass drumming because I don´t like it, but he is a maester on it, and for metal fusion and rock drumers is a very common tool. The older he gets, the better taste he has and the better he plays In this song the beginning is brilliant and the fills are so tasty. And the sound and intention is brutal and there are some very difficult nuances but he makes them sound easy, this is absolutely incredible !!! On the other hand the main reason of Virgil superb technique is the absolute master of the "free stroke". He plays (almost all the time, with some exceptions of course) ) with ZERO effort. The stick jumps up with a brutal acceleration due to the reaction force of the surface (3er axiom of Newton). This has also a natural consequence: Incredibly sound quality. The secret of technique is the use of rebound and let the stick do all the work. I have learned a lot analyzing and studing Virgil. He is a genius. I don´t like very much the music he plays but I have to admit that he is the most advanced drummer very far ahead of the rest of drummers. In general when he plays more "Easy" with less notes and more space I like it Every time I listen or watch him I discover little nuances, little subtleties that had gone unnoticed before, and this happens to me with very few drummers. With Virgil this happens every time. So there is no doubt of his brilliant condition. He plays the piano like a pro He studied snare drum with Philly Joe Jones and Rob Carson (Rudimental Snare Drum Champion) His music knowledgement is superb. He is a great worker, always studing and practicing. He is a true artist. Virgil is getting older and I have thought the fucking way to study with him before he dies , to take some lessons in Los Angeles to meet him to take some lessons or bring him to Barcelona to do a masterclass because all of this knowledgement can´t be loose. I´m looking foward to do some lessons with him. Fuck you all the jazz drummers who despise people like Virgil just because they don't play his style, frustrated, arrogant and ignorant, closed-minded musicians that don't appreciate Virgil's genius. Fuck you, motherfuckers 🤣🤣
I loved that Virgil gets me crazy how he plays pocket at the same time playing such odd signatures and stickings He’s a nut case as I like to call guys like him and Lang 😂
2:53 REMINDS ME OF WHEN YOUR DAD OR MENTOR WAS TEACHING YOU SOMETHING THEY STRUGGLED AT BUT REALIZE YOU ARE WATCHING AND LOOK DOWN AT YOU AND GIVE YOU THAT REASSURING SMILE LIKE “YOU GOT THIS”! VIRGIL- I SEE EVERY OUNCE OF HARD WORK AND DEDICATION YOU PUT INTO YOUR INSTRUMENT ON DISPLAY EVERY TIME YOU PLAY! A TRUE MASTER MUSICIAN!
@Drummer J.L.H. just as a side note, when I say "technical" drummer, I'm eluding to the fact that his skillset is beyond what anyone is doing technically. We both think the same thing though, I'm just pointing out the degree of technical mastery. He is without question the best drummer in existence now.
Wow, what a track. Stupendous playing, especially around 3 mins truely exceptional. That closing fill right at the end, woah. Strewth cobber. I think this is the best thing I've seen him do, so powerful. Only played it about 15 times so far
Totally addictive vid. Been watching it once an evening over the past week. Donati is such a master of his art that he can do pretty much anything with rhythm with extraordinary intensity - and yet make it look so easy! Perhaps one of the characteristics of genius. 😎
Love this, it's a lot more musically accessible than some of Virgils other music, and I'm a drummer who has a good grasp of odd times signatures, polyrhythms and metric modulation.
Virgil is just so focued on making everything complicated and difficult to get, I just like it when he grooves. Check out Joel Hoekstras "undefined" and "the moon is falling" albums with Virgil from the 2000s. Virgil's best playing IMO, he had one day per album to learn and track all the songs each time so he plays "simple". The result is some of the most enjoyable playing I've ever heard from him lol. Link below
It looks like he still has a lot of capacity left to make it even more interesting, i am curious where the limitations of Virgil are, he just keeps getting better.
When you deep dive in to odd time signatures and metric modulation far enough it actually does get frustrating playing 4/4. It's not hard, it just becomes absurdly boring.
Virgil plays music the top artist do not play and sell...I am sure for the past 30 years with all his odd time playing his phone was not ringing off the hook...Drummers like Dennis Chambers were getting the calls...So in turn he has showman chops but not musical chops for top artist and recordings.
Blimey, how good is that? A hard hitting, traditional grip drummer (like Stewart Copeland of the Police and Carl Palmer of ELP) and some unbelievable fills and drum displacements. I had a VHS video of him years ago and it broke so, this up to date uTube video with great sound is a very impressive catch up. Virgil was quite awesome then and is getting even more happening now. A big wow from me and well done from a UK drummer.
Let's remember something, first of all the favorite drummer of Virgil Donati is Ian Pace of purple, with whom he knows very well, besides Virgil is a student of Philly Joe Jones, a world-famous big band drummer, one of the greats in the history of jazz music.
So what ? Ever heard of Billy Cobham(76) , Jack de Johnnette (78), Lenny White (71), Ian Paice (72) or Roy Haynes 96!!! Music keeps you young mate ....
@@randobianco Actually, the only drummer i believe was the great Chick Webb. I was watching an interview and heard him mention his name twice......favorably. Chick had chops but, i wonder if some of the reason was Chick was a band leader and that was Buddy's goal. I don't believe there is much if any video of him just audio. Probably, because of the time and he passed at such a young age..... shame.
I find his drumming out of this world. So technical, mind boggling at times and intricate, but he has a very very deep groove and dynamics. He maintains that, and with a killer sound. Although someone like me plays totally different (I don’t have these skills haha) his drumming is quite the inspiration for me in recent years in other styles of music.
To me one of the greatest Drummer of Our time.
Greatest! Any other! Maybe Jarzombek is near.
The greatest!
Fully agreed and absolutely an awesome drummer. Alongside Gavin Harrison, the timing and syncope machine
Such a phenomenal drummer, and that song is really good.

Thanks for a good review.. ..And greets from Finland.
Good notes on Virgil..............good incite on Virgil.....I would ditto that...........Gray
Well said!
Bingo ... ALL OF THE ABOVE.
All yes, but FAR ahead of all other drummers? At least Thomas Lang and Marco Minnemann will have a word.
So excellently unique. Nobody plays drums like this.
The most unconventional super-human drummer on earth 😮👍💪💪💪👏👏👏
One of the best albums ever recorded and just few persons knows about it!
I loved that Virgil gets me crazy how he plays pocket at the same time playing such odd signatures and stickings He’s a nut case as I like to call guys like him and Lang 😂
To me, he's like what Allan Holdsworth is on guitar. He could die without a penny, but his legacy is priceless.
Damn. That's a fucking good comparison.
yeah, there's no one else that's really on this level. i always thought that too. makes just sense he played with allan in the end
Hmmm. Holdsworth was technically incomparable... but melodically shallow.
This dude and Lang have probably got to be the best in the business
@@al-919 you might be right. Doesn’t mean I’m not drummer you fucking knob
You should check out Matt garstkas drumming, creativity and originality out the ass
@@al-919 you must be not a drummer...what language is this?
I'm obsessed with Virgil's playing on this version
A year ago I first heard this song and it's such a great song. Virgil makes this song so powerful with his drumming.
Some of the slickest drumming Ive ever seen.
Virgil rules

Again that guy from Area 51. 🤪💯
This song is like listening to dragons flying in a storm at sunset. ❤ And Virgil D is just...Dante's drummer guide through the Inferno....
Greatest technical drummer alive
@Drummer J.L.H. I agree he's the best alive. And it's not even close.

He killed that!!!! Love that kick-drum!
This man is a timing machine.
Absolute utter beast. Such interesting fills too

This performance alone is just so full of outrageously difficult and musically exciting ideas. He's one of a kind.

This is a great album.
Virgil bends time itself.
Virgil IS time.
This is Perfection
This is beyond everything. Mind blowing drummer ❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏👌👌
It looks like he still has a lot of capacity left to make it even more interesting, i am curious where the limitations of Virgil are, he just keeps getting better.
Limitations for Virgil ? There are none
Limitations ?
he has no limiter, lol
The dude is superhuman i think hes like 60 years i mean holy crap imagine him at 85 years andbstill krushing on drums
He is the limit for mankind
My favorite clip of virgil ever ! The opening polyrhythms are amazing and he just nails this so hard !
Virgil !! This is incredible impressive to me, technique, composition, groove ..all in the same soup! 🙏
Best seat in the house is behind Virgil, where you could hear all the ghost notes
Look at the first crash, 17 secs, he almost hops out the stool to get extra power. Man is a savage.
Amazing machine. Must be difficult for Virgil to play straight time... he’s so technical that playing simple is out of his realm
I know you are joking ; ) ..of course he can play 4 on the floor ! Ever heard of Steve Vai... or Frank Gambale "Made in Australia"?!
When you deep dive in to odd time signatures and metric modulation far enough it actually does get frustrating playing 4/4. It's not hard, it just becomes absurdly boring.
Haha this band covered Audioslave's 'Show me How to Live' with him on the drums, so he definitely plays 4/4
Groove is groove
And Virgil has immense groove.

Absolutely phenomenal playing.
AMAZING!!!! I love This band❤️🤩
Different place all the way. God bless Virgil
Absolutely fantastic Virgil. I am just amazed such fantastic playing so right for the song. You are at another level.
As if this wasn't hard enough, Virgil massacres it 0:22-0:33 yet again.
This is math stuff. Virgil is always amazing!
Astonishing time-keeping and interpretation. The spirit of genius as drummer.
This album is life changing PLEASE run to buy this, listen to Human Hardware and Paralyzed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be !!!!
Best version I've seen online, killing it!
Thanks so much for sharing!
Total brain meltdown.
Virgil es una besssssstia!!
Gets better every time I watch it. It is therefore 98 times better than when I first heard it.

Hard to believe. Looks like he's in his 40's at the most
It took a lifetime of dedication to get to this level of ability.
@ 3:00 untouchable!
No , I just got something in my eye...... I'm not crying....
Awesome !!!!
Virgil's playing is beyond the word amazing.
I often wonder what Buddy Rich would have though about Virgil's ability?.
I think that they will speak in a language that doesn't exist , just because they can.🙈
I can't recall when Buddy Rich spoke positively about any other drummer, it would be a pleasant surprise to hear he did.
