that solo was one of Virg's best! His doubles on the double pedal never fail to astound! He is all speed combined with economy of motion. This man can groove and solo....one o' the best!
@@nickcosta8062 I must have been feeling very dry that day - I agree with everyone - I hate seizure inducing editing too - I really like long slow shots when it comes to bands and movies - which disappeared after the advent MTV, other than Blade Runner 2049.
Good Lord simply amazing!!. Got to see him play live 3/2012. Was invited to the sound check. He is a very humble man when you speak to him.Very thankful for his fans. All around great guy..
Well Thomas Lang is a fantastic player, but Virgil's playing is so distinguished and unmatched in so many ways. Virgil is probably the best polyrhythmic drummer ever, and his ability to play over the most complex bass drum ostinatos at blazing tempos while maintaining such control and precision is a remarkable feat. I can’t even contemplate myself playing some of the things Virgil is doing.
I don't remember where I first heard of Virgil...probably his work with Planet X. I've been a huge fan ever since. Would've been fun to see what he would've done as Dream Theater's drummer.
VIRGIL (a worldwide drum known legend today) has been an Australian drum icon/prodigy since the early 80's... for the sake of history, his first superband (amazing-spaced out fusion group) was the Melbourne based "Loose Change"(ask any Australian musician over 40 years old...scary shit what these guys played) ....& this is way before the Planet - X time (piece of cake for Virgil) ... (I must declare that I was fortunate enough to see them live countless times... and also, that I was one of his private students during that period =1986 ... since day one (first lesson) it became obvious to me ,that this guy (great guy, by the way) is from another planet ... perhaps Planet-X ...underlining that apart from being a musical genius...he was & is a workaholic witch accounts to endless practice from the age of 4 !!!)
That takes a lifetime commitment and dedication to push the envelope of superhuman drumming coordinations techniques and finesse. A strong mindset & discipline of a true champion. Good on you Virg! All the best in your ongoing pursuit of explorations in the world of extreme drumming. Cheers mate!
Good god- I've seen him do it on other vids too- when he's playing super fast stuff like at 1:27, his hands disappear a little bit, blurring like a hummingbird's wings. And, he's reaching WAY the hell up to those high toms too! Just crazy.
I went to his clinic back in '97 and he gave me shit about not clapping along with him while he was explaining a drum pattern. I guess he didn't see my left hand was wrapped up from surgery after I cut a tendon on my left hand. I tried to explain it to him after the clinic was over and I could tell he felt bad about it and we chatted about my injury for about 15 minutes.
hahahaha, a whirlwind of polyrythms and brutal complexity. it was hilarious when at the start they tried to follow clapping, they lasted 2 bars and that was it.
Certainly ONE of the best, but in terms of raw skill...Vinnie Colaiuta, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, and Dennis Chambers are also up there. And are all more musically tasteful than Virgil, IMHO. Also, best chops =/= best drummer. If they did, then Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Carlos Vega, Harvey Mason, Jim Keltner, Rick Marotta, Bernard Purdie, and many others wouldn't be considered among the best drummers. Which would be ridiculous.
Amazing and I feel he has the fastest cleanest single stroke rolls all around his many, many drums!! Really is an Amazing thing to see and hear!! I'm playing and teaching for over 45 year's this cat is pouring his heart out! A true demon drummer, in a great way!! Double stroke rolls with his feet!!! Very hard to do @ that Speed!! WoW!!

misterfunnybones yeah because they came to listen to some shit pop singer haha, they have no clue what a good musician is able to do and perfom live. Now they're mindfucked. Jeez.
I'm sorry, but if you find this solo boring is cause you don't have a clue of whats happening. This is truly amazing, like it or not..........GO VIRG!!
Donati and Lang were actually lovers for a brief period in the 90s and taught each other a lot, both personally and drum wise.I can only imagine how good they both would be now had they stayed together!
I love to hear the public screaming when he does a funky beat. People love groove and funky beats and I think these beats make the difference between good and bad drummers. It's simple but a lot of technic is needed to make it sounds awesome.
All I'm saying is: its all been done before. No best, but being an older (52) bass player I've heard it all- meaning all prog and jazz and rock bassists and drummers. Peart,Baker, Bonham,Palmer, Paiste, Sheehan, Lee, Squire,Jaco etc. Love it all. Nothing new under the sun...
No It's you who just don't know what you are talking about, referring to a virtuoso who pushed drums beyond it limits ,like he's the average drummer in your neighborhood makes you only sound ignorant
what the hell is that on 1:27 !!! so true what the guy at the end said in french ''Virgil Donati the responsible for the suicide of thouasands of drummers around the world''
But he come every 5 years, makes 3 or 4 shows in Paris to make money and disappears for next 5 years... No new album, no new songs... I don't like this.
Donati, as amazing as he is, doesn't have half of Buddy's stick control nor does he have his genius phrasing. This is impressive, but doesn't have coherence.
+Ivo Maropo LOL!! most ignorant comment ever. If you think rich could've pulled of a quarter of what virgil does in terms of endurance, creativity and actualy evolution as a drummer, i can't help you.
+Srivikram Sundararajan I think you have deduced the wrong effects. Bonham is not revered by today's greatest drum technicians as "the best ever". Not even close.
i wanted to congratulate him after a gig and he stood and listened to what i had to say.he was so humble and friendly.i will never forget=)
Monstrueux de technique, physique, polyrythmique, bref...

What an insanely talented beast. Just jaw dropping.
The greatest athlete behind a drum kit.
I like how the camera switches every .32 seconds to prevent you from being able to watch him, and to induce seizures.

I guess they practiced their strokes a lot, and had interesting head choices.

I love the popping sound of drums. Keep it up, Virg, keep it up.
