The thing that makes Virgil really stand out amongst the elite players is his ability to make complex things sound fluid. It doesn't just sound like he's playing an 'exercise' on the kit, but rather a musical application of such exercises. While not playing 4/4, there is still that fluidity of time and groove.
@@stephanmarcouxdrums4877 Because progressive metal and fusion isn't for everyone's taste. Not everyone know Cobham, or Jarzombek, or Weckl, or Colaiuta. The list will go on and on and on. Virgil is in a league on his own when it comes to what he does.
This man is trying everything to away from those temptation mortals has. Everything he did in his life, physical training, dieting is for drumming purpose.
It is not about just having a desire, your mind and body should be able to follow when you are getting older. Virgil has been taking care about himself mentally and physically for years to continue his journey as long as possible.
There are and have been many, many supernatural, amazing, G.O.A.T drummers thruout time, from Art, to Dave from Buddy to Billy, Tony and Lenny, Vinnie and Max, Elvin and Gene and Ringo and John and Steve and Thomas and Mike and on and on and on....The fact that we know who all these guys are by first name means they have all had a profound impact on our musical vocabulary. These guys and a hundred more first names can fill our collective GOAT lists but when you really, really, really understand music and drumming you will have to give Virgil a special place in history. The things he can do on a drumset and musically overall puts him in a very special place. If aliens came from outerspace and challenged us to a one on one drum off.. Human vs Alien with the losers planet instantly vaporized, my Champoin would have to be Virgil. We would have to send Virgil. Virgil is that special. If you doubt me, please take a deep dive into Virgil's career and listen and learn what he is able to do. I know it's crowded at the top of the mountain but this man is truely special and I believe like all great artists, unfortunately he may be recognized more after he is gone.. Lets not let that happen and appreciate him now!!
That is a very special tribute to Virgil and all the other guys that you named in your comment. Virgil without a doubt has put his stick time in. I saw him up close and personal all those years ago when he developed the double strokes with the foot pedals. I find myself being so very thankful to have been born on the cusp of the big band rock and roll era. Think about it. At some point there was no such thing as a rock and roll musician let alone a rock and roll drummer!! God gave us all the gift of drums and drumming. Everyone everywhere has something to offer!! Playing drums allows us to be part of a brotherhood that most people on this planet really don't understand!! So with Grace and honor always share what you have learned. Support each other always and remember the voice was first. Then it's the drum!! I'll stop there for now and say thank you for your insight. So to everyone out there that sits behind a set of drums and hold sticks in their hands.... Keep your chops up my brothers🙃🥁🙏❤️
This sums up perfectly what I've been trying to explain to non-drummers for years. Ive been lucky enough to follow him and see his clinics and shows since i was a young lad, and he never ceases to amaze. I have seen the faces of other greats standing off to the side watching him at festivals etc, he genuinely makes people just say wow and shake their head in disbelief at what they just witnessed. No other musician has pushed the boundaries like Virgil, i doubt anyone will.
Virgil would lose IMO. I can't trust him to do Green Onions yet (so to speak). I've known his abilities (amazing piano plyr) and contributions 27yrs. but Virgil has never been in a real band that produces anything of merit as artistic music. His situation is the same as Gary Husband, Borlai, etc. so to speak. Do you understand? Name promotion works two ways.
The youttube video titled ''Mike Dolbear Web Show Series 3 Episode 1 - Peter Erskine & Dave Weckl'' at 22min45, Peter said : ''Dave would do things that maybe, if I were lucky, maybe do for a second. And he (Dave) can do it for like 10 seconds, 15 seconds. Virgil could do it for 4 hours !'' Dave agrees. If those two are finding Virgil special, I think it's fair to say he probably is.
The way he shifts from the 2221 to the dotted with his left foot is so smooth, in there few times. In some cases when he was taking the 2221 and 223 and shifting accents back and forth between his right hand and left foot you would almost forget he is playing in 7 unless you listen to the bassline. I'm guess he is going to do something crazy in 9/8 next. Can't wait.
Virgil is just constantly inspiring. In this case because of the kind of sparseness by alternating the kick and snare on the first pulse of each 7/8 measure, to me rather than looking at the 7/8 as a time signature, it feels more like the subdivision of 28th notes or septuplets in 4/4 time, thereby having the kick fundementaly playing the downbeat of 1& 3 and the snare on 2 & 4. All the other embellishement or accents played by the kick and snare are just possible note groupings within the 28th note subdivision played within the quarter note pulse; in the same way as would be the case if one were playing a 16th note groove.. The other great thing about looking at this as 28th notes played in 4/4 rather than a 7/8 time signature, is that it makes the tempo 7 times slower, which than makes apprehending the groove and feeling it so much more accessible because of the space it creates. The left foot hi hat pattern can then be felt to be playing a clave within each quarter note, sometimes as 1-3-5-7 other times it seems to play every second note , resolving over two beats from a 4/4 perspective like this 1-3-5-7--2-4-6 and back to 1. Similarly the right hand pattern can be felt to be play all the 28th notes (7 per beat) while accenting pulses 1-3-5 of each 7 note grouping. That is my take on it at any rate, looking at it as 4/4 time using the 28th note subdivision gives me a greater appreciation and time that I can really feel, because of the space in the groove and the kick/snare downbeat backbeat feel. Thanks Virgil beautiful groove.....
@JH hah! Simon Phillips held a clinic in my country and he spoke about working with Virgil as a producer. Another well-known drummer was with Simon in the studio the time (I forget who) and he asked Simon to explain what Virgil was doing to which Simon replied "how should I know?" The other drummer then retorted, "what do you mean you don't know? You're supposed to know!" 🤣
Is it just me, or does that music sound like a Weather Report song?...Not that there's anything wrong with that 😃 EDIT: I'm thinking of Havona from Heavy Weather.
i realy dont think that hes from this planet...it cant be...he is just in another level far away from the rest, insane stuf, , hoooooooooooooooooly shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Clear heads just sound like plastic to me. Coated heads sound so much better. Listen to his snare sound versus all the other drums. I'm not saying the other drums sound bad, but the coated head sounds so much better than the clear.

This, well said
Vinnie had the same thing. Virgil utterly blows the mind with the kind of things he will just spontaneously pull out during improvisation.
Virgil is just the best. In a league of his own in my opinion.
If that was true, I would listen only to him. It's art, and almost no one know who he is compare to Phil Collins or John Bonham.

This man never stops developing and inspiring others. Truly a giant influence and a pearl of our drumming community!
Very precise four limb independence. This is master drumming at its finest. Controlled, deliberate, dynamic, complicated!
Keep in mind this man is in his 60s here...60s...just supernatural on all accounts...his passion never ends...

There is definitely only one Virgil......his trademark sound is absolutely unique..master of the craft for damn sure
Virgil plays drums like a piano player would so much advanced phrasing and great ideas .
Virgil is in fact a piano player.
The fruit of a lifetime of constant work and dedication 🙌!!!
I play guitar. But love listening to Virgil play rhythms I’ve never heard and so musically to boot.
I'm watching this and loving the sound of the drums and the musicality, but I have no idea how to count this so I'm totally lost.🤣😂
Cold and lonely up there at the very top, huh Virgil? 🐐

Love the playing here. Great drummer.
I was a fan now I am an air conditioner! Amazing!
Incredible talent meets a lifetime of hard work. A real precision powerhouse. Thanks Virgil
Keep going, Virgil, we love you.

Someone told me about Virgil while discussing Thomas Lang. I wont say who is better but I will say I’m glad that person told me about Virgil.
magnifico.💯💯💯💯💯💯
I would love to hear a slower breakdown and how to count it out. You can feel the pulse and downbeat. I get lost on the rest
i understand everything
?
Whats Virgil's favourite food? Movie? Does he have other hobbies? Curious
El arte de Virgil es prodigioso!
The music track is a take on the vamp in a Planet X track called “Snuff”
Absolute Genius 💯 🔥💯🥁🔥🥁👏💎👏💎👏🥁🔥🥁🔥🥁
Нагледно, подробно, вдъхновяващо.
What I really want to know is how many ball caps does he own?
🤣
Quality, wouldn't mind some slower breakdowns of some of these ideas and patterns. So us mere mortals can try too.
My IEMs appreciate this mixing 🙂
Един от най-добрите видео уроци!!!
Just got a Masterclass on 7/8! :)
I still have literally no idea what is happening here. Virgil speaks some super advanced language on the drums that my puny brain can't comprehend. ☹️
You are not the only one 😉😉🙂cheer up bud!!

Ah ah ah ( nervous laughing)
What happened!!
This is some tripped out music
Virgil, we know you're an alien. You've been compromised! Show your real self....
Where did you come from?
Have you come in peace?
Would be good if he broke it down further and walked mere mortals like me
Great talent & a master on the kit, but I've steared away from this kinda music as it ends up just being a math cless with cold notes on a page 😮

Trop simple pour moi aussi .😂
