In the 1970s I was on holiday in Great Britain with my wife. We went to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard. Great event. After the event there was a group of six noisy teenagers, judging by there clothes I would say American who had just discovered legal drinking at 18. Anyway they were making all sorts of noise and trying to climb the fence around the Palace. Suddenly a young looking Police Woman rides up on a horse, doesn’t say a word just moves the horse sideways and traps two of the boys between the fence and the horse. It was obvious the horse was making it had for them to breath. She just sat on the horse not saying a word just giving them a stern look. After a few seconds she nudged her horse with her knee and the horse moved sideways and released the boys. All six of them just quietly moved away into the Mall. Best bit of crowd control I ever saw. Quite discrete and effective.

It goes to show that they can speak to the public if it falls within his role whilst on duty, whether it be a possible terrorist threat or a potential robbery I guess both could be seen as a security matter.
They’ve got a good vantage point from the saddle and are likely trained to be very observant and recognise things which are out of the ordinary.

What a LOT of people do not realize is that while these soldiers are dressed in historically accurate uniforms and trained to basically stand there and do nothing, they ARE serving soldiers and they have a duty to perform. Cross their duty at your peril. It has been shown lots of places. King's Guard around the palace in the UK, Old Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the US, other units in other places, no matter where they are do NOT assume that because they look funny that they are not paying attention and/or are harmless. Exactly. No one should forget the Hyde Park and Regent's Park bombings of 1982. Eleven soldiers and seven horses lost their lives in those incidents. One horse, badly injured managed to pull through. His name was Sefton. The Guards are rightly vigilant about unattended backpacks, parcels and other paraphernalia. No one wishes to see that carnage again.

People should switch on their brains by now if they are going to such a place where soldiers and police are also on duty.
It was not for nothing that the soldier asked the people about the bag. Especially because it is quite strange to be standing in such a place with such a large suitcase instead of leaving it in the hotel.
I would also be suspicious if there wasn't a bomb in it.
You shouldn't play it down either. Terrorist actions can take place anywhere and it is certainly no fun for the soldiers.

I really think they need to place a security fence about 10 feet away from these guards, and their horses, and tourists be required to stay behind the fence. Like a comment below mentions, it's sad how these soldiers and their horses are treated like an amusement at a theme park or petting zoo. In the event of an emergency, be it a terrorist or whatever, they wouldn't be able to quickly respond without running over a bunch of gathering, giggly, picture taking tourists.
