In early October of 2019, I had a 48-hour layover in Kuwait immediately following the nearly two weeks I spent in Armenia. To make the most of my limited time here, I linked up with my friend Yousef from Local Tour Kuwait, who spent two days taking me to unique sites and fantastic restaurants in Kuwait City and the surrounding area.
From the spectacular Avenue Mall, to the shocking war damage still present at Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum, to the magnificent Grand Mosque, these two days were a major lesson in Kuwaiti culture and history. I also loved seeing this beautiful, modern city from above from the Viewing Sphere at the Kuwait Towers.

Of course, I couldn’t visit Kuwait without enjoying a ton of local cuisine! The fried liver with onions, peppers, and tomatoes at Saket Ajeeb Restaurant was a highlight right off the bat, but I also couldn’t get enough of the kebabs at Traditional Café Shemaimry, the unbelievable Kuwaiti breakfast at Café Bazza, and the mouthwatering laham mandi at Bait Al Mandi Restaurant.
I swear, I was drooling for most of this trip! The food was so unreal, but what also blew me away was the kindness of the Kuwaiti people. Middle Eastern countries often have a lot of stigmas attached to them in Western countries, but I have to say, everyone I met was lovely, friendly, and warm to me and made me feel welcome.
But enough of me talking about Kuwait. Let me show you what it’s really like in this video documenting my incredible 48 hours in Kuwait!

Good morning David: Well, you gave us a documentary that if you asked me to write a precis, like we used to do in English high school classes, then this will take a lot of creative writing but I will try to keep it short. This had so much interesting and historical content. Started off with a dizzying experience in the revolving restaurant. You should visit the CN Tower here in Toronto where we have a revolving restaurant at the top as well. Difference is that you can go out high up tethered and walk around in the open. Everything in the middle east is just massive. It's always a privilege to see the culture, customs (some people, even in one comment here today talking about you not eating with a fork) SMH, and history of the places you visited. I remember desert storm when Saddam Hussein tried to take over their oil wells in Kuwait by setting them on fire. The only way to cap those wells was to drop a depth charge in them, cause an explosion and they seal themselves off, hence no more fires. Growing up in the oilfields, my father was a foreman drilling for oil during TPD days and all through the different companies that came after until he retired. Trinidadians should remember these companies: Tesoro, BP, Petrotrin and a few others in between. All the foods looked so down to earth so I will leave the description to you since you were the one who ate it. Remember hot in hot, (the body cools down faster) and cold in cold, (the body works hard to warm up), that's why your host said that he drinks hot all the time. I felt sorry that he had to watch you eat at times because he was on a diet. When you visited that mosque and the guy explained about the Quran, I literally lost it, because I remembered how some people desecrated and burnt it without any respect to the religion. I loved your host. He seemed really shy at times and when you gave him that hug at the airport and said goodbye, I lost it again. I think you did too. It's always emotional to see someone leave after spending time with him. So, I can write a whole essay on this but this is as far as I will go. David you are doing a fantastic job with these documentaries. Keep it up. Until the next one, I will be watching the rest of the Barbados series and hopefully catch you on the next 'live'. Stay safe, be well and God bless everyone. Until then ciao ❤️🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦 BTW, I love Middle East history.

I have been commenting still on the Guyanese series. I don't get it. I hate to say this but I don't know why some of them get so offended by the comments. I had one of them telling me that I am not a Trinidadian when he doesn't know me and denying my heritage. He has since edited his comments. I see that he comes in on the live chat so don't be shocked if I address it during the chat. You will know who it is when I call him out. Don't worry, I will be good about it.❤️🇹🇹🇨🇦 BTW, it's not any of our regulars. Now he answered saying that Guyanese people are put to sit on a special bench at the airport in Trinidad. Now, what does that have to do with what we do here? SMH. I will find and let you read it for yourself. Have a blessed Sunday 🙏❤️🇹🇹🇨🇦

@@JudyT868 I always enjoy what you have to say about the videos. I usually do not go down and read all comments what others say. I didnt see comments to what you are talking about how to eat. Just the rest of what you had to say about video here. People that need attention will always try to pick apart other people with out caring or knowing anything. I usually avoid them due to they are just emotional vampires trying to take good energy. And no worries You defend yourself when warranted. Most time they end up putting their foot in their mouth. Peace Blessings Judy .Have a Gooday ♥♥♥

@@elizabeth16598ee thanks Elizabeth. I read other peoples' comments and you are right. I read all of our regulars' comments like yours, Shabana, Ingrid, Devi, Annemarie etc. But sometimes, new people come on and vent. But this is not the place for that because they seem to forget why we are all here. So, no need to read this guy's comments because he doesn't make sense. I just cut him off because he doesn't know when to stop. So have a pleasant day and catch up with you later. Hello, hope u r well!! There is a misconception about the Kuwaiti dinar. 1 Kuwaiti dinar is 12 UAE dirhams but the actual KUWAITI CURRENCY VALUE IS ONLY 20% HIGHER THEN UAE because their currency is not linked to a dollar like use. 1 Kuwaiti dinar is considered to be same as 10 uae dirhams with an 20%. One can buy a can of Pepsi for 200 fils which is like 2 dirhams in uae. More expensive currencies are euro pound Singapore dollar Japanese yen n some other. Great day!!

  • @almaha5843
    @almaha5843 11 місяців тому +2

Hello. I enjoyed watching this video , but I would like to comment on some points in it. The ghutra you wore is a white shmagh just like the red shmagh that Kuwaitis & Saudis wear especially in winter ((moreover we Kuwaitis never wear it in summer . Most Kuwaitis wear a white ghutra made from Voile (which is a light cotton fabric ) that suits the hot weather in the Arab peninsula . The way they made you wear the ghutra is not a Kuwaiti style, this is used in Oman, UAE & Yemen which called emmamah. Maybe your friend and the salesman are not Kuwaitis . The Kuwaiti style is to fold ghutra like a triangle, put it on the head and use eqaal (black head band) to make the ghutra hold on your head. You can google photographs of rulers of Kuwait to see how we wear it just like most Arabs in the GCC.
My second comment is about the traditional Kuwaiti food. The first dish you ate was jereesh ( crushed wheat not lentil) it is cooked in a stew with whole pieces of meat not minced meat, and it is beaten after removing the bones to mix it with the crushed wheat until they become like a purée . So as it is made up of crushed wheat we never eat it with bread.
In addition the bread they served at the restaurant is called tandoor bread , khameer bread (yeast) or Arabic bread, but the younger generations tend to name each type of bread after the baker’s nationality, such as pitta bread as Lebanese bread and tandoor bread as Iranian bread (it is widely spread all over Arab and Islamic countries therefore it is not particular to a certain country).
The second dish was margoog . It is made of vegetables and meat stew with layers of lightly flattened dough. Also you do not eat it with bread, because the dough is (like the bread) a basic ingredient of the dish.
The third dish was not just marag but tashreebah (in some countries they call it thareed). It is an ancient Arabic recipe that was known for more than 1500 years even before Islam . It is made of marag (a stew that is made with meat and vegetables) , then it is added to rugag bread ( a delicate crispy bread that is like wafers) which will absorb the gravy of the stew. Also you do not need to eat it with bread because the bread is a main ingredient in this dish.
Maybe your friend’s English was limited that he could not express himself or correct some misunderstandings just like when you were at the Indian restaurant he told you Chabdah (liver) is meat.
I hope you enjoyed your stay in Kuwait & thank you for this beautiful video

Even the guide who helps you in showing places never tells u about rules of islam.

It’s an insult to eat with a serving spoon and put it back in the dish you have to learn the culture and the custom , you cannot eat with a Serving spoon and put back in the dish.

Jay Bunker: That "skinny white dude" as you call him is a foodie. What did you expect? He travels around the world to bring us the history, culture and foods of the places he visited. He has a family and children so please show him some modicum of respect.🇹🇹🇨🇦
