- We had to replace the head gasket on our Volvo 850. Now there is just one mistake we need to fix and then hopefully we can drive it 256 kilometers and test our head gasket repair!
After replacing the head gasket the legendary 5 cylinder made an awful noise. The first problem was that we messed up the ignition order. Once that was fixed, the awful noise was a little less but still there. We decided to wait a little and let the lifters get enough oil. Sure enough, that also made a little difference but still, that awful sound remained… Now after a close inspection, we made a little mistake regarding the exhaust manifolds…

Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come.

Great project you guys! I can relate to your enthusiasm, got my Volvo 850 96` in 2012, when my father gave it to me. He bought it originally in 1996, so its in our family since the very beginning. You gotta love those old bricks, just excellent cars :) I really enjoyed your journey and your videos helped me a lot with some minor problems so thanks a lot! I hope your 850 stays in that great shape and i wish you lots of fun with her ;)

Also did a head gasket on my V70 2.0 10V from 1997. The same thing with the exhaust manifold gaskets happened to me as well. 😂
Unfortunately my manifold was cracked, so i had to get another one.
That is a mistake we will both never make again😅 too bad for your manifold though!
