So what an option is can be multiple things.
You have a read option involving the quarterback and running back (one who takes the ball from qb and runs). What this means is the quarterback “reads” the outside defender. If he commits inside, the quarterback pulls the ball back out of the running backs arms and runs it himself, or if the defender goes more outside or waits for the quarterback, he completes the handoff and running back keeps it.
You have and RPO (run pass option). Usually a receiver will motion from one side of the field to the other width wise during the cadence (words before snap) and the quarterback will either fake the handoff and take it himself, handoff to the running back to take, or quickly fake the handoff and throw it to that receiver on a little swing route (usually a swing route, where he just kind of runs horizontally slowly).
The other type is an option route. This is a read made by the receiver based on what type of coverage, or what zone appears to be most open on the play. (If he can beat his man in man coverage, up to him. If it’s a zone coverage, he will switch the route to go towards the open part of the field).
    Hopefully that helps!

Hi, I’m a football coach and writer.
    The positions are pretty easy.
On offense, you have the Quarterback and running back in the backfield, behind the offensive line. The offensive line is comprised of the center, the left and right guards, and the left and right tackles. The left tackle is primarily the pass protecting tackle and the right tackle is often the better run blocker. Next out from the tackles comes the Tight End position, who is a hybrid between the offensive linemen and the next position out, the wide receivers.
Some offenses run with positions like the wing back, who is like a running back who lines up off of the ball and next to the Tight End, and the Fullback, who is like a larger running back whose job is to block in the hole for the ball carrier.
    Defensively, you have levels.
The first level is the defensive line, made up of the nose tackle and defensive tackle, who line up in the middle gaps of the offense and are often responsible for the run. Next is the defensive ends, who line up in B and/or C gap either inside, on, or outside the offensive tackle.
The second level is the linebackers. This is made of the middle linebacker, sometimes called the “Mike,” who is the QB of the defense. A 3-4 defense will have 2 MLBs, the Mike for the strong side and the Will for the weak side. The outside backers are called the Stud for the strong side and the Zeke for the weak or off-ball side. These are hybrid players but they’re often pass rushers.
The third level is made of the Corners, who can play outside or “slot,” which means they’re covering a Wide Receiver who lines up between the tight end and outside WR. The other position group is the safeties. Safeties are broken into two groups, free (weak side) safeties and strong (strong side) safeties.
The weak side and strong side are determined by, often, which side the tight end lines up on or which side has more players.
On special teams, you add Kickers, punters, holders (who catch and place the ball on field goals), and the long-snappers, who get the ball back 12-15 yards on special teams plays.
The last couple of positions are the kickoff returner and punt returner, who are self explanatory. And gunners, who are the fast guys who run down the sideline on punts to cover the returner.
    Hope this helps!

A teams “endzone” is the one they are defending. So the offenses endzone is the one that they are attempting to play away from. So for my comment, a team committing offensive holding while the offensive lineman is within the endzone “behind” them, would result in a safety. Or an intentional grounding penalty by the quarterback while standing in the endzone. Sorry for the miscommunication lol

  • @RTOUSIOS

Over time, it is kinda hard to understand, but the rules (that I know) are that each team gets a possession if they kick a field goal the game continues unless a team scores a touchdown or the defense gets a Pick 6( that is an Interception that taken in to the opposing team endzone) or a safty but if both teams cant score on there own drives the game becomes sudden death where any point wins the game.

Offsides can be called on the offense, but it was a rare occurrence. Only a centers hands can be placed in the neutral zone but if another offensive lineman does, then its offsides on the offense. It’s been called more often this year because of many teams copying the rugby style QB sneak where players behind the QB push them while the line creates a wedge. To gain more leverage, the lineman sometimes cheat forward, so the refs have been paying closer attention

Yes, it is legal for both instances to occur without penalty. QB hands off and fakes that he has it, defenders are allowed to pursue and basically disengage in their own once they've realized the QB doesn't have the ball. It usually happens within a matter of seconds, so it rarely happens where the QB would fake still having the ball and be tackled. At most, he's pushed aside.

So at 46:37 (the response to my comment on your last video), basically what he is saying is that in the same scenario you laid out (where an offense is backed up the field in the endzone) and an offensive player commits a penalty in the endzone, such as a holding, the result would be a safety for the defensive team.
The cause for confusion was actually my fault - I was referring to the endzones incorrectly. A team's own endzone is the endzone they're trying to defend, so an offense scoring a touchdown would technically be scoring in the opposing team's (defense's) endzone, and an offense giving up a safety would be in their own endzone. The reply to my comment referred to the endzones correctly, and mine did not (although you displayed it correctly in the video). I mainly did this in haste so it wouldn't cause confusion - so that failed on my part clearly lol.
This applies all the way up to the field. Anywhere past the 50 yard line leading into a respective team's endzone, that would be that team's "territory." So if you hear for example "The Giants are now in Green Bay territory", that means the Giants offense crossed the 50 yard line and are on their way to scoring in Green Bay's endzone.

    • @Nofrillsasmr
      @Nofrillsasmr  6 місяців тому +1

Right, yes, I think the crux of my confusion is which end zone is a team's own endzone. Which now seems obvious, but sometimes I confuse myself with semantics. Thanks again for commenting! I hope it was ok to read your comment - I was already in it and then questioned it. lol

To answer your question at around 41:00, it depends on when the hit is. The penalty is roughing the passer. It gives the offense an automatic first down, and the team who committed the penalty lose 15 yards. If it's RIGHT after the qb hands the ball off, then it should be legal, but is also up to the discretion of the refs. It also depends on how hard the qb is hit, but that applies to any hit on a qb as the NFL has really tried to protect qb's in recent years. There is no rule against the qb pretending like he has the ball to deceive defenders.
As a good example, there's a short 8 second clip of an excellent fake, and one of the latest hits on a qb ever in the NFL that gets flagged for roughing the passer. In this instance, the hit is completely illegal. I tried commenting once before with the link but I think UA-cam didn't like that because the comment didn't get posted. If you want to see it, search Jared Goff fakes out Darnell Taylor.

the quarterback always follows a list of 'options' called '(quarterback)-progression' -- an 'option-route' is any scheme in which the receiver instead of following a predetermined path has the ability to make a decision to alter the route based on the defense's response.

“backfield” can also refer to the space behind the defensive line. you may often hear people talk about how many defenders are positioned in the ‘defensive backfield’. for example, in nickel coverage, you will see 5 players in the defensive backfield; in dime, you will have 6…

A video on the collegiate conferences would be interesting, but I suspect it would be rather complex. To my knowledge, the conferences started off as being regional groups of college teams, but with today's popularity of college sports and the amount of money involved, many of the conferences have changed drastically - some of it makes no sense. For example, why is Louisville a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference? Kentucky sure ain't on the Atlantic Coast. Also, Stanford, SMU, and UC Berkeley will be joining the ACC. Why is there a school in Texas and 2 in California a part of the ATLANTIC Coast Conference? It never ceases to make me laugh.

So an option run is when the QB has a choice between keeping the ball and handing it off to the back.
A run-pass option is when the QB has the option to throw the ball or hand it off.
An option route is a read route. The WR and QB have multiple routes called, and they communicate before the play about which coverage they’re seeing and the WR runs the route in the play call based on which coverage the defense runs.
The option is almost always determined by a one-player read. On a read or speed option, the first one I described, the offense will often leave a defensive end unblocked and if he comes down the line to get the RB, the QB will keep it. If he stays home, the QB will hand it off.
On the run-pass option (RPO), the QB will read if the off-ball LB steps inside to defend the run or if he bails for coverage and make a decision.
    Hope that answered the question.
