Zinc white (or also known as Chinese white) is the most transparent white of them all, so it’s better for adding it as thin layers. Titanium white is the most opaque so when adding it to another color it will make it a much lighter value with just a little amount and also it’s perfect when we want to add a strong white on top of other colors *I know this because I came to the same question once I decided to buy individual gouache paints and came across the fact I really didn’t know if I’ll needed white (since I was used to watercolor where mostly I didn’t use white)so I made a research on whites and also how people use it in gouache (since it was my goal) and at the end I bought both, I hope everytime artists have any doubt they research, get knowledge and hopefully found something they can apply to their artistic path **Just saw your comments, I'm glad you all ^ㅅ^
It's not that she didn't know the difference between zinc and titanium white, it's that with this set _specifically_ there is no noticeable difference between the white paints given and perform exactly the same. One is not more transparent or opaque than the other.
As an absolute beginner on a budget, I must thank you for considering my demographic in continuing to use Himi when making your videos. There are a lot of videos that attempt to sway me away from even considering the Himi set, but I just can't stomach dropping so much money on artist-grade when I'm only just learning to sketch and paint gouache from scratch (and we all know how expensive groceries are rn). Seeing your videos and how beautiful they all are despite using consumer-grade, "inferior" paints, is hugely inspirational to even picking up a paintbrush. The YT'ers pushing everyone away can come off as a little pretentious in their opinions when beginners like myself have no or very little frame of reference, in my case, a cheap paint-by-numbers acrylic set from Shein that got me hooked on making this a new hobby. I don't want to get bogged down in paint, brushes, paper types, etc. I just want to paint. Let me paint and not feel bad that I'm not getting "the true experience", or even worse, "an inferior experience". Let me just paint and enjoy painting. Thanks for reading/skimming this wall of text, but most especially, thank you for your inspiration.
The reason they do that is because they know how horrible it is to fight with your art supplies, so you end up not "painting and enjoying painting" because you are fighting your supplies. I bought so much Himi paint and now it sits there because I can't stand the sticky feeling (dextrin binder). It would have been much more cost friendly if I would have bought artist grade paint from the start and saved myself the trouble and frustration. No one is trying to be snobby, but quality art supplies are more expensive for the reason that you are looking for, they let you paint just to paint because you don't have to worry about paint, brushes, paper. I have no issues with Himi gouache, I am glad it exists, I am so incredibly jealous of people that don't mind the texture and the fighting and whatever else and can create amazing and inspiring art with it. Himi gouache paints are truly a gift to the art community. You should 100% try them and I hope they work for you. However, don't get mad at people trying to save you from potentially quitting art out of frustration by steering you to quality supplies, especially those that have been around for hundreds of years - there is a reason they are still here.
Stopped painting since January because of my Online Classes, and getting a notification from you makes me wanna paint again. Do hope my Himi Gouache is still fine, thank you for this video 😁
Mine were like bricks just add some water and mix with a pallet knife. If they are too hard, leave the water inwater over night and add water as needed
I just went out on a limb and picked up a set of Himi gouache paints and some practice paper, just to try out the medium. I haven't painted since I was a kid and being in college money is tight, so I didn't want something super super expensive. College keeps me busy and life is harsh and demanding enough with work and family obligations, but I have found that art is always soothing for my weary soul. I do digital some and I draw all the time with pencil and ink, but there's just something so visceral and grounding about traditional painting... It's an inexpensive budget paint that will enable me to explore a medium I've never used before. I'm looking forward to it and I will be following your channel for tutorials and tips!
started using my himi just a few days ago, I really like it. i want to learn how to use it before school year starts again. thanks for this, it inspired me to continue working on my paintings. ♡
Hey everyone! Just letting you know I've uploaded the real time footage of the Spirited Away painting on my Patreon (no voiceover but you get to see me paint the whole 3 hours): www.patreon.com/posts/spirited-away-no-53856552 And I'm planning to make a shorter voice over tutorial for UA-cam so stay tuned!
i bought my first gouche set and i got so frustrated at the thickness of the paint but seeing you paint and the tips you give were really helpful, thank you!
As an asian, it brings me joy to see someone scrapped off the paint from the lid XD Everyone i've seen throw away the lids without doing it and it triggers me hehe
Beautiful painting! I do really like the convenience of jelly cups. The idea of squeezing tube gouache into an airtight pallet to mimic that is really interesting! Such a wonderfully informative video. Thank you!
I also noticed that himi gouache is way thicker and heavier compared to my other gouache sets. But am getting used it now. Overall, I could say that it is a great investment. 🌻
I actually love the Himi gouache colors! Especially their color palette is really nice, specifically for people like me who don't like mixing colors lol! They're unfortunately really overprized nowadays though, back when I got them they were $14, now they're being sold for as much as $29!
29 dollars is expensive?? Here in my country the cheapest himi set sells for 229 R$, granted 1 dollar is worth like 6 ~ 4 Brazilian reais but still it's really expensive
Oh my God, your video is recommended to me and I'm automatically reminded that I haven't opened my gouache in months 😭 thank you, for the amazing video and the amazing art 💙
I already had my unboxing but still watching similar and reminds me of the feeling of excitement and the joy I felt having a new paint.. and yeah still and always satisfying ♥️✨
I dont own gouache paint, but i have been wanting to try it out for so long. Im not the best at regular watercolors. I only recently started watercoloring, but don't exactly enjoy it. Im thinking I may enjoy the more opaqueness of gouache more though! This has convinced me to give it a go, haha.
The same happened for me. I'm really into alcohol markers and I thought watercolours would suit me. However, I'm enjoying the gouache technique a lot more. I feel like it's more intuitive to use than watercolor
Gouache totally made me fall in love with painting. I'm useless with watercolors and acrylic paint and the opacity of gouache is a game changer! I also love that it's water soluble, it makes things so much more simple and no dry paint goes to waste. Hope you got to try it out by now!
I personally enjoy watercolor more, BUT gouache helped me get ahold of watercolor easier, and painting with gouache is a lot more carefree and relaxing compared to watercolor.
Highly recommend! I love watercolours and I do paint with them as intended but I noticed I was also using a lot of watercolour paint to achieve a thicker more opaque paint for details etc. so I invested in some gouache and oml I love using both together. I tend to use watercolour for my backgrounds, colour blocking and starting the details and shading, but the gouache is so incredible for details and brighter bolder colours. It’s also great if you wanna do like a solid wall of colour? It’s like being able to paint with acrylic but still have total control over the thickness and opacity with the amount of water you use. Idk it’s hard to put into words, but like having both and using them together has changed the game for me!
Would love to see a video about it, when you squeeze your artist grade gouache into an airtight container. I think the cotainer is a big reason why many people like the Himi gouache. It would be really interesting to see if you can achieve the same convienience with tube paints!
Tbh at first I bought this gouache set bc of the packaging. It reminds me of my polly pocket toy that I have. The colors are vibrant and then I enjoyed using it as time passed by cuz I'm used to using watercolors only.
There's something so satisfying about seeing a himi set get cleaned and revived!!!! I bought a set a while ago but haven't cracked it open yet, I wanted to have a time where I could paint every other day/every week ;A; you know what, I should just open them ;m; also I have been binging jelly gouache vids on here lately and I just ordered a spray for the mould (just in case!!! just to keep my set clean hehe) I'm gonna break them open this week and start painting !!!
I purchased the little round containers you get in kits with acrylic paints, the ones that are in a strip together, from Michael's. I cut the up to separate them. I squeezed in my Holbein gouache to fill about a third of the way to see how quickly they dried out and if theu got moldy. I have been opening them up every few weeks for about 3 months and they are still moist. I keep them.in a tin container that held supplies from Jane Davenport and it's very lightweight to carry around. I get 21 containers on there and because each is individually sealed I just open the ones I need and I can use a pallet knife to scoop out what I want or dip the brush in directly.
I got this set back when it was viral and loved it, but then lost the motivation. Now it has completely dried out (like, i cannot even get a knife through it to try and revive it) so Im thinking about re-purchasing them since they're quite cheap. Thank you so much for the video!

I also tried reviving a Himi palette once and it was a lot of work that took some muscle to do with some colors. Because you see, letting it soak in water isn't enough, some paints I had to completely dump out on some acrylic glass and just move it and mix it with water using a palette knife to get everything as smooth and homogenous as possible. With some paints the binder is so strong the paint gets gummy and it becomes hard to mix and it takes a lot more effort. But it's super satisfying to look at the revived paints.
Thank you so much for making this well-organized and informative video with lots of tips and alternatives for both beginner and advanced artists ! it was so helpful 😊
Great info Jess, agree about so many aspects in your pro and con run down. I like to use them with plein air sessions at the beach and yes very heavy to carry around in your bag with everything, plus I've also had issues with sand flying into them! Had to clean them out, quite a bit... Luckily for me they were dried and sand was on top.. My HIMI set is usually quite dried out, which in this situation can be better! Personally I think that they are worth the try; they are very good and painting with them is an absolute blast, they are very easy to use and achieve very dark mixes. Their only flaw in my opinion is that they tend to turn more grey if mixed with white, but overall I enjoy them allot 👍
Love this video! I am trying to get back into painting again. I watched your video last year on the set too which inspired me a lot. I also have had no issues with mold when i sprayed it with water often.
Some recommended your UA-cam to me because I recently got the Himi gauche set and don’t know what I’m doing. Your video was very helpful and I love your style for gauche
good points about the himi gouache! i've been playing with mine for a few months now. for me, the biggest Con is the color is significantly different once it dries-maybe this is something that happens with other gouache brands as well? also rather than having the whole set open and exposed when i paint, i prefer scooping up some colors that i'll need on to a palette and mix from there (the goops on my palette dries fast but i'll just keep adding water). i'm always curious to hear how other people use their himi gouache though!
Wow! Great job💯👍 It's very informative and helpful video tutorial sharing by you. Keep continue Big like to your effort. Stay healthy and happy always 💐👍😊
what are the name of the colors you picked for the reds in 3:30 ? im looking to buy just these 8 + 2 cool and warm whites instead of the set since i will not use the other colors

I am absolutely supportive of you taking care of yourself before anything else, and I hope I'm not coming off as negative or rude! I just haven't seen any update posts on there for quite a while letting us know what's going on, so I was wondering if this will be it for now for Patreon. Thanks for your time Jess!
I definitely am!! Just taking a break until about the end of August. I will be uploading the real time version of this Spirited Away painting on there next! Thank you for your support there, I really appreciate it ❤️
Jess Chung oh I’m so excited to see the real time version of this!! I love your landscapes of course but I’m excited to try something new. This video was great I’m just a slow learner so I love the real time videos. Thanks for your response, and again I hope I didn’t come off like an ass, I totally understand you have SO much going on right now ❤️
Hi Jess! Just wanted to say that if you're ever out of ideas for what to paint, I'd looove to see you do an underwater scene with colourful corals and maybe a turtle and some fish? Just an idea!😊

Prussian Blue

Thank you. Your tutorials are helpful. You have a very pleasant and calming voice. The final painting in this tutorial is lovely.
i saw this video and i went and immediately bought the 20 € set. lovely review!

Just received some for Christmas!
Душа отдыхает, когда я смотрю подобные видео 💕
I like the kuretake Gansai tambi. Cheaper for 24 colors and can be layered like gouache but also used like watercolor
great painting! I love it
Very relaxing and helpful video, also amazing job on the painting!
good points about the himi gouache! i've been playing with mine for a few months now. for me, the biggest Con is the color is significantly different once it dries-maybe this is something that happens with other gouache brands as well? also rather than having the whole set open and exposed when i paint, i prefer scooping up some colors that i'll need on to a palette and mix from there (the goops on my palette dries fast but i'll just keep adding water). i'm always curious to hear how other people use their himi gouache though!
OH! and i gave up trying to make a smooth color blend with this gouache HAHA. i embrace the streaky transitions from color A to color B now.
dark values dry lighter and light values dry darker in gouache, if that's what you mean by the colour is significantly different once dry!
The color change is the same with Holbein too
I love this case!!! thank you a lot for your time to create this video :)
Thanks for the review on these paints and your beautiful picture.

Are you planning on continuing with your Patreon? I really appreciate the access you gave us to your skillshare class, and I know that you mentioned having a hard time managing your schedule.

Just an idea!😊
love the idea thank you!!
I’ve got to say that student grade paint looks pretty good.
