0:14 wait for the last layer to dry 1:15 use thicker mix for the next layer 2:10 use fewer strokes 2:56 build multiple layers 4:37 check colour opacity
My paintings always looked like that "how not to" painting that you did. Now i know why! I'm just so impatient, i want to finish it as quickly as possible and you cannot do that with layering.. Anyways, thanks for this simple explanation!! Much appreciated!!
Thank you so much for this video! I've been watching so many "gouache for beginners" videos lately and a lot of them go over basic knowledge most artists who don't practice gouache should already know (such as color relations and the such). Your video is MASSIVELY informative on gouache specifically as a medium!
THIS!!! This is exactly the video I needed! I'm just starting to experiment with gouache after 7 years of digital-only drawing and it was so frustrating not understanding what I'm doing wrong. Thank you so much for making such helpful content!💜
Hey wow interesting to see another digital - to traditional artist! I was also doing digital only for the past 15 years and now I'm getting into traditional, it's so freeing and refreshing, takes me back to my roots. I always hand drew my sketches for digital art anyway so it just feels more natural to me.
honestly this is intresting! lol im the opposite of you a traditionalist trying to go through digital art and honestly its the same fro me :""D but its kinda nice though hearing from this perspective! as someone who did traditional alot painting on digital with layers confuse me so i just try to paint on one layer :""DDD anyways the options of colors that traditional doesnt offer (since it takes so much money s;dkjfnsdjak;fn) its really nice!! anyways it was nice hearing form this! :DDD im glad digital artists are doing traditional B)
Thank you so much for this! Most artists only show the process of layering on a small rectangle swatch - if at all. So your video was ACTUALLY helpful, as others have said. I struggle a lot with layers myself, so I tend to work on a single one, ala prima style. You made me excited to try gouache again, since I work with Acryla Gouache where I don't have to worry about reactivating previous layers and can just mess around.
I’m glad I could help! Let me know how it goes when you try gouache again! It took me a long long time to get used to it but I think it’s totally worth it! It’s so versatile!
Huh, I've been wanting to get into gouache from acrylics and I'm pleasantly surprised that, apart from the water, it's similar to how I already paint! Gouache is so beautiful! At first, I thought it was all digital art.
Such a great idea to show the results of how NOT to do. Most tutorials just talk about how you SHOULD be working with gouache. You give a great demo of do’s and dont’s and why. Thanks.
Thank you so much! Much like everyone else said: you're covering details that are hard to find elsewhere! Commenting to help this video show up first when people look for gouache tips!!!
Love this🧡 I've been struggling with making leaves on trees. It always ends up like a blob. A tutorial on brush strokes would be super helpful for people who just started gouache medium. Thanks for this video🧡
i would love a video on brush stroke technique as well! related to this - i managed to reproduce the small leaf strokes myself using round brush number 3 from the reeves brand (im not an expert painter so idk how this translates into other brands) i just got my gouache to the right consistency and then painted short strokes at a slight angle and the bristles created the effect naturally! hope that helps you a little :)
This was so educational, and I've been dabbling in painting gouache for a couple years. Seeing it spelled out how you can consider different factors as you're layering was great, and I had no idea opacity is usually indicated on the tube.
the messy painting is exactly how my first few gouache paintings have looked. i need to work on my patience, haha. thank you so much for this video! you are very good at what you do
This is by far the most thorough tutorial gouache painting and technique I’ve seen. I can’t wait for my paints to arrive! I will be using this as a reference for sure. I can’t thank you enough.
Very useful. I’m quite Impatient which is why my colours get all muddy, but your tutorial really helped me understand what I did wrong and it was also an amazing painting. Keep up the good work :)
I literally can’t express to you how much this video helped me, I’ve gotten into gouache recently and was hating the way my paintings came out and I didn’t really know why. This came up in my recommended and I’m so grateful, I was just being too impatient and not waiting for the paint to dry 😅
The overall color is very nice. The peaceful scenery also puts my mind at ease. I hope everyone is happy. Thank you for the pretty illustration video great shared❤
Thank you for this demonstration; it really helps to see where I’ve been going “wrong” and I need to a lot more patient and let the layers dry! And this totally looks like a beautiful scene from a studio ghibli movie😍just gorgeous!
Something that’s rarely mentioned in videos is the specific type of paint you buy! I never even knew about being able to check the opacity of the paint on the tube itself, seeing this video makes me want to get back into it. Thank you thank you!!!
Wow! The stark contrast of the 2nd painting really hammers the point home! The improvement in lighting/highlights/depth is undeniable. Thank you for this!!
Great video -- very useful tips! Helped me identify why I haven't enjoyed gouache the few times I've tried it. Now I'll try again with these tips in mind. Thank you!
How - i mean - I've always been a good 'drawer'(like in pencil or pen), but I never understood why gouache just wouldn't LISTEN to my hand and come out like I wanted it to. The first painting looks exactly like mine, and now I think I finally understand what was wrong with my painting method. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH you don't know how much I mean it! :)
This is so useful! Tbh I had to learn all of this by myself through trial and error 😭😭 I'm so happy this will help other people to not take as long as I did!
The second painting literally looks like a photo, like it’s just that good. I’m gonna start using gouache soon and honestly these were really good tips. They were also new to me cause I’m more used to using watercolor.
Thank you for such a step by step explanation demonstrated between two works of the same subjects and yes, the second one where you allow drying first plus all the other tips, is far more lovely to me.
I just found this video,I “liked” and subscribed , because as a watercolor painter I find this immensely helpful, great information, well taught, and beautifully painted. The two techniques side by side was also key to understanding the purpose for allowing the paint to dry! Thank you. ClaudiaSJI
Wow, this is my 1st time knowing about opacity, i'm so shocked. Btw you make both painting looks good. Maybe the impatient one has a 'sketch like' vibe to it, but it still has its own charm. Must be because you know your way around ❤️ Thanks for sharing, it is lovely to watch!
This tutorial was amazing. Such clear communication and perfect demonstration. Demonstrating both what to do and what not to do really helps the points in the lesson be remembered. Thank you so much.
amm i dont even do gouache but your thumbnail the art you created was enough to pull me towards this masterpiece i just was so happy to see the progress of your pinting it was calming and gave me this urge to buy gouache too whereas i paint with watercolors most of time. thank u ❤😊
I've saved this video for several months and waited for my exams to finish and start painting, thank you very much, your video helped lot to get back the control over the colours! You are awesome 🌟
Thank you! Learnt many things from this video!! 😀❤️ This is the first time i have seen someone explain the whole thought process and techniques behind the painting!! It really means a lot! Thank you from bottom of my heart.looking forward to learn many things from you!
So pretty! Thank you for this tutorial. I was especially excited to learn how to determine the opacity of a color based off of a symbol on the paint tube. Personally, I would live to see a tutorial on painting fog/mist with gouache, and painting sunbeams over a dark background with gouache.
THANK YOU SO MUCH i have been feeling like a total beginner despite working with gouache for several years now, and this showed me exactly what i was doing wrong and how to fix it ^_^ thank you thank you thank you!!!!
This is really informative, especially looking for those little markers on the tubes for how opaque they will be. I’m glad this showed up randomly in my recommended feed :)
Thank you for the good explanation. I'm a beginner and I did all these mistakes because I have no patience. I will try today again and I hope for a better result. Greetings from Germany.
This was an excellent straight forward video and helped me solve the problems I kept running into. Thank you for this, you are very clear and concise with your directions! ❤
This was super useful..exactly what i needed You did a great job in explaining the whole thing clearly.. I can really see the difference now. Btw the final result is stunning😍
Really good tips! Thank you for showing how it would affect the painting, having the visual reference for different techniques is super helpful and on top of that you kept the video short and entertaining!
Thanks for this, just bought some gouche and felt like I needed to know the basics before making a lot of mistakes and trying to reinvent the wheel for no reason. This helped me lots I can't wait to try it!
This is so useful! Great tips! I am new to gouache and I was getting frustrated with it. I realized after watching your video that I was treating gouache like watercolor, which is my original medium. Thank you for sharing. ♥️😘 New subscriber here. 😘
this definitely helped! i was gifted a big set of gouache paints and have never tried using gouache. I tried painting the other day and it was so messy because i did get impatient. thank you for the video!!
This was a definite instant subscribe. This was amazing and added the depth and points i haven't seen from other videos. I'll be watching more of you in the future 😁💕💕💕
0:14 wait for the last layer to dry
1:15 use thicker mix for the next layer

2:56 build multiple layers
4:37 check colour opacity
Thanks, i kept accidentally skipping parts and needed to find a time stamp list
Not all heroes wear capes
My paintings always looked like that "how not to" painting that you did. Now i know why! I'm just so impatient, i want to finish it as quickly as possible and you cannot do that with layering.. Anyways, thanks for this simple explanation!! Much appreciated!!
I’m glad I could help 🥰!
Use a hairdryer and you can get onto the next layer quicker.
I agree, same.
I think hobbies like reading and painting also teach us patience
I keep making the same mistakes
Same here!!
Do multiple pieces at once, work on one while the others dry ❤
Thank you so much for this video! Your video is MASSIVELY informative on gouache specifically as a medium!
I’m glad you find it helpful!! 😁
Demonstrating what NOT to do is just as important as showing what to do correctly. Thank you for a thorough and detailed explanation.

Amazing, a "Do & Don't" video that perfectly captured my mistakes instead of a rushed "Don't" painting as an example. Thank you for the tips!
Such a great idea to show the results of how NOT to do. Most tutorials just talk about how you SHOULD be working with gouache. You give a great demo of do’s and dont’s and why. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your comments!! I really appreciate it 😭❤️❤️
This was great! I love how you showed the two paintings and demonstrated the good and “bad” aspects of each. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!! I’m glad you like it 😆

You are a life saver, I was so confused why my art looked washed out and grey. (As I am a complete beginner to gouache) thank youuuuuu!! 🙏🏼
such great tips! Love that you actually showed the process of both examples, very useful. Thank you!! 🖌
I’m glad I could help 😁

A fine artist makes difficult things look easy
Great video -- very useful tips! Helped me identify why I haven't enjoyed gouache the few times I've tried it. Now I'll try again with these tips in mind. Thank you!
The whole time i was listening I was watching your painting tehcniques, too. Everybody else: make note of their tehcnique. Its so good!
Thank you explaining gouache paints for me, I did not know about the opacity differences on the paints. Thank you that helps.
i noticed these things painting today and you put context to them. thank you.
the painting you consider your bad painting looks still way better than my best painting, I love your art
This is genius! I didn’t know about the opacity as a novice artist. 🤯
How - i mean - I've always been a good 'drawer'(like in pencil or pen), but I never understood why gouache just wouldn't LISTEN to my hand and come out like I wanted it to. This was by far the most helpful video on gouache! Thank you! This pin pointed a lot of the problems I was having, without even realizing it.
As a beginner gouache user, I am so thankful for this! So helpful ✨✨✨
The second painting literally looks like a photo, like it’s just that good. I’m gonna start using gouache soon and honestly these were really good tips. They were also new to me cause I’m more used to using watercolor.
The comparison of the two paintings is so helpful! Thanks for sharing ☺
This is really helpful. The ones you showed to not do, is what I exactly did on one of my paintings last month unaware, I even got frustrated with it.
Your paintings are so relaxing I could watch it forever
Thank you for such a step by step explanation demonstrated between two works of the same subjects and yes, the second one where you allow drying first plus all the other tips, is far more lovely to me.
Thanks, this is so helpful! I am new to gouache after painting with watercolor and oils for many years. It’s definitely a learning curve.

this of many videos I've watched is the most educational. I now understand how to use and what to look for on the tube. Thank you!!
I’ve used gouache for years but came looking for new tips and tricks. I really like the more viscosity per layer tip 🎉
amm i dont even do gouache but your thumbnail the art you created was enough to pull me towards this masterpiece i just was so happy to see the progress of your pinting it was calming and gave me this urge to buy gouache too whereas i paint with watercolors most of time.
