Very simple the xpt has to go south first before they can go back north to the freight line to access meeks road other wise its the long way around via strathfield to lidcombe to regents park to enfield and then the freight line towards botany.
Its been like this fr a while, i was once catching the train from hurstville to wollongong and while waiting ended up catching the xpt pulling into platform 4 and turn around to head back up to get to the depot.
Love the new logo, awesome video. Haven’t seen a xpt for a while now. Never been to allawah but from this video I can tell it is a great station to film at, one day I might film there idk 🤷♂️ Amazing video well done!
cheers mate Its not the best station to film at due to the 2 islands being a bit far from each other which makes it harder to get shots from "opposite platforms", and the platform is also curved which makes anticipating trains a little harder. It is quiet though which is the great thing about all of the T4 line stations from Hurstville to Wolli Creek :)
@@Woodland26 for sure! There is a crossover at Banksia and also at Rockdale, but the Banksia one is rarely used (only once has it ever been used in passenger service) and the Rockdale platform is abandoned so it’s not used for passenger service (also don’t think it’s electrified)
@TransitSydney I was in leappington the other day it broke down on it way to Melbourne a diesel locomotive move it out of the way and drop of the passengers to glenfield and take the xpt train to leappington yard and then another diesel locomotive took it from there to sydenham maintenance centre

@TransitSydney Yep its happened before, there's a photo online of an XPT sitting at Wollongong station in 2014 ready to head towards the Main South Line via Robertson! That would've been an awesome experience.

A message to all Sydney based rail vloggers: please expand on the abbreviations "T4" etc as anyone outside Sydney (and quite a few within Sydney) wouldn't have a clue what line it was. It's the "T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line". Those designations T3, T4 etc were dreamed up I reckon by some bureaucrat within Transport 4 NSW who had nothing better to do, and/or who was trying to justify their job. They might be handy shorthand for rail staff but don't mean much to anyone else.
For people who don’t take public transport all day all night, they don’t really care about “T4, T8” etc. And for those who do take public transport regularly, T4, T8 etc is easier to remember than “T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line” or “T8 Airport and South Line”. Just my 2 cents.
@@ktipuss no one remembers where the line is going, it’s more so the unique colour. T1 is yellow, T2 cyan, T3 orange, T4 blue T5 pink T6 brown T7 grey T8 green T9 red. So long as you know that, maps exist at every station for commuters to look at. You don’t even need to know that either bc there’s a key, it’s sort of like the Singapore MRTs Circle Line. It’s called the Circle Line because it’s a circle, not because of where the line actually ends up
Restore the original route through Helensburgh abandoned early C 20 and duplicate through Coalcliff. Central to Gong 1 hr with existing crappy 1500v dc overhead . C’mon Wollongong, show your engineering smarts and demand transport improve, ent at reasonable cost!
The single track 1888 Clifton Tunnel and it's associated 2km of single track (including the approaches as well as within the Tunnel) needs duplicating before looking at restoring the original line through Helensburgh. That 2km single track section hampers train operations on the South Coast Line.
Agreed. A Wollongong Transport Infrastructure expert, Prof. Philip Laird has been advocating for these. Straightening the track a bit in the NP and returning to the original Helensburgh route + duplication could make 1 hr Central North Gong express runs feasible with little extra cost apart from timetable adjustments to give adequate spacing for 100 k/hr averages over a few signal sectors, allowing 80-85for the whole trip with maybe 4 stops.

Surprised that there are no crossover before Hurstville. Poor Allawh station hardly any trains stop there in the weekend

They might run xpts to Wollongong one day
Probably not as the Oscars are being replaced by the NIFs, and the XPTs are being replaced by the NRFs + the XPTs are a regional train
XPT's have run to and from Wollongong when a diversion is in place for the Melbourne XPT.
