- In a recent live stream, Brad, Tarrus, and I discussed the pros and cons of ripping your physical media Blu-rays versus Kaleidescape for watching movies. In this excerpt, we discuss some of the weaknesses and areas of improvement for Kaleidescape in your home theater. Check out the full live stream here: • Ripping Discs vs. Kale... .

Damn, you can only see movies that are installed instead of showing your entire library??? That is nearly as much of a dealbreaker as the price of the hardware!
Yeah, it is an interface bummer. Hopefully they'll listen to some of my UI improvement ideas someday! :)
Thanks!
You're welcome!
Jeremy is soooooo right about kscape needing a UI feature refresh. Its honestly pretty sad.
Hard disks are still the King! Got Black Adam in 4K uhd for $8.50 shipped
Maybe Kaleidescape do the "not displaying the collection" as an incentive to purchase their large storage servers.
That's possible, but I hope not. I think it's more a hold-over that it made sense to only show downloaded movies for a long time, but now that we have 10 minute downloads, times have changed.
After I got over the hump of spending $$ on getting into the K-scape ecosystem, what held me back were two things:
1. As mentioned, I don't like the movie wall not showing non-downloaded content. Like you guys, I'm a collector and like to see my collection of movies (and have visiting family easily see what's available so they can easily pick something to watch if I'm not around). But, I also know that it's rare when I want to watch the same movie multiple times. Hence, it's impractical (especially at K-scape prices) to have storage to hold all the movies that one has purchased. I wonder if not showing non-downloaded content is a way of K-scape encouraging users to upgrade or add additional K-scape servers. Or maybe it's just lack of putting more R&D dollars into software enhancements.
2. It would be great if purchasing a K-scape movie also provided a Movies Anywhere (or iTunes) license. I can understand if K-scape wouldn't want to provide K-scape movies from Movies Anywhere purchased licenses, so I'd be happy even if it were a one way street (i.e. purchasing K-scape provides a Movies Anywhere license, but not vice-versa). In my family, one or two of us might watch a movie in the Home Theater, while the rest of the family may instead want to see the movie another time or somewhere else (family room, bedroom, iPad, when traveling, etc.). So, it's nice to have the flexibility of where to watch content. While physical media ripping has its disadvantages (time, release date, etc.), one advantage of physical media is that once it's been ripped, it's accessible wherever Plex players are available (Apple TV, Shield, iPad, iPhone, etc.). In addition, almost all 4K movies also come with digital codes. I recall K-scape's FAQ was still mentioning that they are in discussions on getting some Movies Anywhere type deal, but I wonder if this is more.of a teaser. They do make most of their money in hardware, so I would hope they would be interested in making a Movies Anywhere type deal.
I'm still keeping my eyes open (and following your channel), and hoping some of the concerns that you guys mentioned would be addressed. Meanwhile, since I came close to getting into K-scape last summer, the prices went up again 😞.
Thanks for sharing! I have another excerpt of the live coming tomorrow about how my first K system was bought used, not new. That's an option to get in cheaper. More to come on K for sure.
The device is a simple computer without a display and other features. Why it should cost so much?
What is the difference with Netflix app?
Kaleidescape vs. Netflix? On K, you buy and own movies in a digital account and download them to watch. Netflix is subscription-based so you don't own anything, and it streams. Quality of content delivered on K is a good bit higher of course, on par or better than disc.
@@Techthusiasmbut can i get dolby atmos quality 4k from Netflix and other streaming platforms?
What's the point of this really nice system if you have to pay $30-$40 per movie. Why not just buy the damn Blu-ray.
Convenience. Accessibility. Elegance. Access to 700+ titles in 4K not available on disc in 4K. Premium access to content still in theaters. Ultimate quality. There are a few reasons. :) But it's expensive, and sometimes hard for folks to justify.
E cause the audio is full bandwidth which is a HUGE part of a movie. Also some of the visuals might be slightly better than Blu-ray..I hope
I keep my NAS🎉
Cool!
What is nas?
Only for rich people
I thought Kaleidescape got sued by the Hollywood J's
No, K is licensed and authorized to do what they do with the movie studios.
