  • A 1999 Whirlpool ACQ142XH0 14,000 BTU 120v air conditioner installed in the garage. It works very well for the space, providing powerful cooling and dehumidification. The unit features a Matsushita rotary compressor with R22 refrigerant. According to the data tag, it's allowed to draw up to 12 amps, which is the maximum allowed on a 15A 120v circuit. The hottest day I've tested it during thus far was 93 degrees, where it was drawing about 11.6 amps. 14K of cooling is a lot of power to cram into a 15 amp circuit, this machine is quite efficient.
This machine was found locally and was in absolutely abysmal condition. There was more mold in this unit than any other I've worked on. There was 0 air flow through the condenser, causing the unit to draw over 15 amps. The evaporator coil was almost completely bent over with very little air flow.
It took quite a few hours to clean out all the mold and dust in this unit, as well as recover operation of the evaporator coil. I was not able to restore the entire thing as some parts were too damaged, but at least 3/4 of the coil is working again. Despite the reduced air flow in some spots, it continues to operate properly and does not ice up at all.
This unit is a true testament to the quality of Whirlpool at the time. Whirlpool seemed to be one of the last really good brands that held onto quality into the 2000s.

I grew up with a Whirlpool made Kenmore that I keep forgetting to mention. It had the 5 woodgrain style panel front. One of my favorite designs.
18K and I used it a bedroom. LOL. I wish my dad didn't make me get rid of it. He got a new to us home at one time. He wouldn't let us use window AC all of the sudden. His keeping up with the Jones's attitude brought on a lot of grief and debt. Dad died and a new window heat pump went in my bedroom. I roast in the summer and freeze in the winter for some reason.

A great video. So amazing the quality of American brands. I can remember this unit brand new in 1998 when I was selling appliances at circuit city. We always recommended Whirlpool. We also sold Sharps and they were pretty impressive, very quiet also.

Do you remember what these sold for? Sharp does make an excellent machine.

@@JordanU I memory is a little vague, but I did order an air conditioner for my brother in 1999 at cost but I feel like it retailed for $399. And it was a whirlpool. I feel like it was a 14,000 BTU as well but ran on 220 and was a heat and cool unit. I just remember thinking that was a lot of money. The sharps were more expensive in their btu category than all of the other units we sold, but then when you turn them on the customer was always amazed how quiet they were. They were constantly flooding the floor in the store because we wouldn’t hear them running if someone turned them on while we were busy. You would have liked the racks they rolled them out on for display. They were very cool stainless steel racks that were wider at the bottom for the larger units and 3 to 4 units tall on casters. They would be perfect for storing air conditioners in your basement.

A good Whirlpool quality product made before whirlpool quality in their applicances went down hill. Glad to see this Air conditioner still going after collecting muluple hours of serivce before it got cleaned. Hopefully you can get a 3 prong plug put on this air conditioner soon along with a new thermostat. Great start up of the compressor and hopefully this thing runs for many more decades to come.

I suspect it will continue to run for quite some time, these were made with very high quality components.

Working like a champ...It sounds real quiet through the video to me so I can only imagine it in person. Such a shame air conditioner units of this quality are no longer produced. Enjoyed the video.

It is even quieter in person, almost inaudible throughout the garage on low. Probably less than half the noise of the little 6K also installed in there now.
