I was so fortunate to meet and talk with little Walter in 1959 & 1962 at the Armory concert hall in Salinas California, that meeting turned me on to play blues harp for the rest of my life, still playing at 76
Little Walter never takes a break or breather here. He just plays and plays. He keeps going and going, like the Energizer Bunny. That ain't easy, folks. Harmonica is an instrument that requires breath control, and he shows here that he's got total control. Just damn amazing!
@@michaellorah9051 The thing is harp is the only wind instrument that requires inhales as well as exhales, so you basically are breathing when you're playing. I've heard it even counts as a type of yoga 😂
Cool to see a young Hound Dog Taylor. Growing up in Chicago, he was/still is one of my favorite Blues artists. He lived and died in the Windy City in 1975. Miss him a lot.
The date was 1967 so this is about a year before his death in a back alley street fight. Walter was an amazing musician and in my opinion an under rated lead singer....I wish you could go find guys this great these days. Sure there are loads of great players but they dont seem to have their own thing or 'original' style the way the guys back in the day wore it proud
Lucky to have video clips like this, blues is powerful because it comes from nothing, so something just as powerful would have to allow its development. There's no other explanation for this.
I play harp (not like this!). In harp forums, UA-cam videos, players go on and on about amps, mics, pedals...this cat is playing straight into the PA and no one sounds better!
We used to hire Odie, Hubert Sumlin, and Eddie Shaw to play at parties. Wow! Didn't know how heavy these cats really were, and that we were in the presence of true greatness.
you used to "hire Hubert Sumlin.." to play at your parties. oh. We used to hire leonardo Da Vinci to come do caricatures of Tad, Biff,Chip and WTF!?!? Are u serious!?!? You had no idea?
@@rxh1013 Those parties were in N.W. Ilinois. We had a friend called Grub who was a lone wolf biker who became friends with the Wolf. He was like Paul Butterfield was in the early days; a badass cat who hung in Black Blues bars on the South Side of Chicago. Really, a scary guy until you new him. Grub would promote these parties to try to raise a few bucks for all these Blues guys, and we all dug it. Wolf would never come out as he was too old, but Hubert would round up the "Wolf Gang", and come out. Grub paid them twice what any club would pay them, so they came out several times, and a good time was had by all. Not unlike Woodstock, Grub would find a great field that he could rent for the weekend, and Boogie On Chillun. Man, just so cool....
Meeting blues greats is a funny thought. Lightning Hopkins basically said go away. BB king and Albert King were great and welcomed the appreciation. You never know. Just enjoy

I'd love to hear some of your music.
Wow! Would love to hear what you've talked about :)
Stoodis!
You should post a video about your experiences!! The younger generation needs to hear them! Keep the blues alive!

The drummer keeps looking at him at the start like "Dude, just breathe. Just breathe Damn it! When is this guy gonna breathe?!"

Little Walter be looking at Hound Dog like "Dang man, I didn't realize we were gonna play it this fast!!"
Hound Dog was the coolest cat ever.

You're goddamn right
Hound Dog is so restrained. It shows he could do more than thrash slide blues. Smooth drummer. Perfecto.
I heard that Little Walter didn't like playing with him, cause he was limited. He referred to him as a 'Country bumpkin'
@alterdestiny Not my opinion, I love Hound Dog!
Wonder if drummer was Fred Below? He was Walter’s drummer on most of his recordings. Had the pleasure of getting hammered with him in 1978.
Scott true
Little Walter lol what a name he was the best better than ever
The players with him here are amazing. I could watch this drummer all day long.
God, I love watching Walter play here. He's so dialed. Not a wasted movement.
That Country Bumpkin' Hound Dog..sure is one badass muther !!.. :-) love Mister Jacobs too

0:47 Eddie Murphy on drums
5 people don't like Dillard Crume's cardigan. Damn sweater-haters!
NOW IT'S EIGHT CARDIGAN HATERS. DAMMMM TROLLS.
Hound Dog's time is all over the map, and his up-the-neck voicings are stepping all over the harp. I think Walter's wishing for his Chess band.
No they're not. The harp cuts though the whole way!
💙🌱😃🌺
Маленький Вальтер - гений губной гармошки.
