    I've been living here for two years so far and from all the youtubers with Korean related content you're the first one I see that actually says it outloud with facts and statistics, most of them don't want to get into controversy or don't want break the "Korean dream". I always say that Korean society/mentality is from 50 years ago, and even though all the countries in the world still have the gender discrimination problems, there's no lie in saying that the case in Korea is really serious which it's sad. I still plan to live here longer because of the relative security compared to my homecountry but still it's good to acknowledge the problems of where you live. Thank you for this video!

      As a creator, I understand why they don't want to talk about it~ It's very easy for viewers to misunderstand where the creator is coming from and get upset or defensive to the point they leave hurtful comments. In all honesty, I shared more information and statistics in the raw footage but decided to cut it down to what you saw in the video as I felt the uncut version could end up making the video too political for a Q&A. I agree, despite Korea's areas for improvement it is still safe than back home. Especially as a woman who likes to travel and take evening walks alone

    hi Natalia! i have been watching your videos for awhile and now that i’m studying in Korea this summer, videos like this one are incredibly helpful to me. plus, it’s become a lot more relatable now. i have made Korean friends that broadcast their views on feminism clearly to a man like me, but keep their positions silent when they’re with their girlfriends or female classmates. regardless of the rough edges, i’ve loved my time in Korea and it has given me much clarity that i want to continue pursuing the study of Korean language and culture. in the future, i hope to work in a business-oriented job while using the Korean language, somewhat similar to what you’re doing now! keep up the great work, looking forward to learning more through your experiences 😊

    Korea has been a country where many feminist policies have been implemented over the past few decades. The pace of social change in Korea was remarkable. Korea was a country that was destroyed by war just 70 years ago. korea was a country with no underground resources and only human resources. so put all efforts on economic growth and national reconstruction. In the end, Korea became the most dramatic country in the world in the 20th century. Most Western developed countries developed over hundreds of years. The countries gained resources from running their colonies and made progress in culture and rituals in a more relaxed situation than Korea. However, Korea is a country where too much change and growth have occurred in just a few decades. What is very interesting is that it is the fastest changing country in Asia for human rights awareness and feminism. It is interesting that the current president of Korea is considered an anti-feminist. Because if you look at his election promises and the party rules of his party, there are already too many feminist policies. Perhaps he was a reactionary to Korea's high feminist wave. But nothing much has changed. Korea is still a high feminist-centered media and political society.And Korean feminism is a little special like Korean history. This is because Korea is a country where both men and women have their own stories. The reason why this country was able to develop at an alarming rate was because everyone sacrificed a lot. However, there were only two kinds of men for Korean feminists. A feminist man B just trash.. If outsiders look at Korean society, there will be many things that they do not understand. Because Korea is actually a country that has developed into a very unique style, and there are still so many unique things. If you judge this country simply from a Western perspective, you will miss a lot. In particular, the most dangerous thing is the dichotomy view. In the world, good and evil are not divided so simply. This is even more so in Korea.

    • @nooiinn442
      @nooiinn442 10 місяців тому +5

      appreciate a good point. Yes. This was probably the fastest change in Korean history over 4,000 years. As BTS's rm said in an interview, Korea is a country that changes very rapidly and has a unique situation. However, the Western view of Korea does not take into account the specificity of Korea. It is often seen as merely trying to teach in a lofty manner. In fact, Korea is a more complicated and fierce country than they think, but most foreigners will not understand all of this. They just talk from their point of view. Many of these channels on UA-cam are almost the same. At first, it shows Korea's unique characteristics, but over time, they are disappointed by things they cannot understand. If you go deep into any country, there are complicated circumstances, but you can't understand all of them. Even Koreans don't fully understand Korea and always fight and complain about each other. Korea's social conflict is among the best in the world. Both online and offline are fiercely opposed. What is important is a balanced view and an open mind, but from some point on, those values have disappeared in Korea. Korean feminism alone already shows the most extreme level of male hatred in the world. Public opinion against it is also becoming increasingly extreme. Of course, no one talks about the issue of male harted because most Korean media and politicians are still pro-feminist. At the end of the day, everything is becoming more extreme. I have often seen many feminists in Korea hate and insult poor soldiers because they are men, but the media never says that. The media and politicians always talk about women's problems. The current president has been critical of feminism in that atmosphere, but there has been no significant change in nature. Honestly, there's nothing to look forward to. His approval rating is at an all-time low, and that's understandable. This country will continue to be extreme and divided. There's no brake..
      But in the end, Korean feminists will win. In essence, Korea is not a country that sympathizes with men, and due to the nature of Korean men, they would rather pretend to be strong. Everyone hates the weak side of men

And her (?) comments explain the fiction of the gender wage gap in Korea. Basically, people only see everything from a female perspective on gender issues. But that's not all

    It’s kinda crazy seeing every foreigners point of view of Korea. I don’t glamorize Korea BUT I do for one love it here but, I don’t live in Seoul. I live in a smaller city in Incheon like 1-2hrs by subway from Seoul. I grew up very poor and I don’t have a good family support system back in the United States. I left home when I was 19 to the US military because I could not afford to live alone or go to school. After my service I met my boyfriend and then I moved to Korea. My boyfriend and his family (Korean Nationals) took me in and gave me a wonderful new family. In the United States I was treated by fellow Americans like I did not belong there. And in Mexico I was treated by fellow Mexicans like I did not belong there also. Too “ethnic” for the Americans too “white” for the Mexicans. At least in Korea I know I’m a foreigner. Korea does have some stuff to fix but people have to understand that they are brand new developed country so it will take time. After the Korean War happened they had to build everything from the ground up. The reason their work culture is so extreme is because they don’t have many natural resources. They could only get ahead by knowing powerful countries, being hella hella smart, and working really hard. Korea is a miracle truly. Many US veterans go to Korea after they had fought in the war and literally cry because of what they accomplished. They felt like the sacrifices they had to do was not taken for granted. Once there was nothing here and now it’s a flourishing booming economy. People forget the Korean War only happened 70 years ago. There are still so many people that remember it and suffered though it. They saw their whole country split in two and change completely. So if they seem angry, emotional, or something it’s probably because they have not adapted well to the change. My hometown was a hidden gem but now it’s just another big city. Everything that was there and that I loved….is gone. It’s a little sad and heartbreaking. But what do I know? I’m a random stranger on the internet. :P
    Ps.) I also did not go see my brother graduate university this past spring. Something I learned in the military is that everyone has their own lives just because you’re gone does not stop them from moving on. So might as well enjoy what you’re doing at this moment and when you meet again you’ll have stories to tell.

    1.

    솔직히 이 모든게 좀 지겹습니다. 왜 항상 이런 일이 반복되고 각자 일방적인 주장만 반복하는 걸까요? 적어도 한국의 페미니즘에 관해서는 거의 모든게 너무나 일방적이라고 느껴집니다. 나는 특정 정치세력을 지지하지 않습니다. 특정 성별이 더 문제이거나 중요하다고 생각하지도 않습니다. 단지 한국의 지난 수십년간의 변화를 지켜본 사람의 입장에서 말하고 싶었을 뿐입니다

      My life is definitely different from that of my friends in Seoul. I live in the countryside by choice and prefer it over Seoul (where I work). The people are nicer, it's cleaner (Idc what anyone says, Seoul isn't clean), and nature abounds. It's expected that I know Korean, so I use it more. Korea is a small country, so things aren't drastically different across the board, compared to Japan (Kansai vs Kanto for example).

    Not getting up from the seat thing in busses and subways also applies to pregnant people. I‘m almost 9 month pregnant now living in Seoul and most non-pregnant people sitting in those pink seats do not get up even if I shove my belly in their face. Funny thing to note: it’s actually the younger people who get up for me sometimes, but never the elderly 😅

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  10 місяців тому +1

      Ahhh~ I've only ever seen it happen once with the pregnancy seat. The girl that was sitting there lowkey got whacked by the pregnant woman for not getting up lol She was so embarrassed that she got off at the next stop. In her case, I think she sincerely didn't realize there was a pregnant woman standing in front of her waiting for her to get up, but like... if you're not pregnant and sitting in a pink seat you should be paying attention 😓 I'm sorry there are people not willing to move so you can sit down. Especially on the bus~ I'm always so scared of falling over while standing, so I can't imagine how scarier it must be as falling while could hurt to the baby

    Since covid the dollar has gotten a lot stronger than the won and yen and I was wondering if that resulted in less people wanting to teach English. Essentially it’s like they got a pay cut and the salaries (at least in Japan) were already going down because the jobs had become more popular.

    • @mrggy
      @mrggy 10 місяців тому +1

      Can’t speak for Korea, but I worked as an English teacher in Japan until recently and the exchange rate hasn’t led to a decrease in teachers. People are really worried about money and the exchange rate, especially as it relates to student loans, but there are enough people who dream of living at Japan at any cost - even if it means their salary would be below minimum wage your home country. The exchange rate makes things hard for paying off student loans and saving money in your home currency harder, but it makes it easier to move here. While Japan hasn’t been completely sheltered from global inflation, it’s much less bad than in the US. So despite the yen getting weaker, it hasn’t changed *too* much how far your yen goes. Japan and Korea are different in a lot of ways, but I think a lot of this is probably similar for Korea, especially when it comes to there being an unending supply of young people willing to accept low wages for the opportunity to live in Korea

    being married to a Korean and planning to be here long term - but not forever - I was especially concerned about the abolishment of the ministry for equality families women etc because not only to women in general face issues but marriage migrant women have even more barriers and less protections especially when not a permanent resident or a naturalized citizen...........that ministry also supports multicultural families and that's important to many families and helps marriage migrants and other foreign families adapt and learn the language get medical help etc.

    Yes, I completely agree with you about how Koreans treat foreigners. My husband, my kids and I are Asian and we still got discrimination when we went to visit Korea in June 2023. Unfortunately Koreans do feel inferior to other Asians, especially the older generations. Half the people were friendly but not a lot. I helped opened a door at the mall for a mom pushing a stroller and she was pretty shocked that someone was helping her, she was grateful but I can tell they’re not used to people helping each other.We’re just so used to common courtesy in the USA so it’s hard so get used to how people in Korea just live in their own bubble. Don’t get me wrong, I love Korean ppl, I have many close friends who are Korean, but unfortunately I had a bad experience in Korea and I doubt I would want to go back to visit again.

    You are right about most things but the immigration law is going to change in Korea by next year. Korean government is going to allow more foreigners to get citizenships and long term visas.

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  10 місяців тому +2

      I’m aware of their plans but that doesn’t change the fact that just a year before they were discriminating against the vaccine records of foreigners to the point that multiple embassies from powerful countries had to come together to accuse them of discrimination for the Korean government to recognize them. The year before that, certain areas of Korea were mandating all foreigners get tested for COVID while their Korean counterparts had no such mandate. They only stopped the required testing because they received heavy criticism from foreign news outlets and governments. The fact that they are offering some easier ways to stay isn’t because they want us here. It’s because they have an aging population and need more people to contribute to the pension system as it’s expected to collapse in the next 25-30 years.

    • @holytiger89

    I think the reason that the younger generation are treating the elderly rudely is because of an overall frustration with hierarchy and distribution of power. I think in general we (as citizens of the world) haven't learned to have conversations about culture and traditions in our countries and we are forced to live life like our parents and grandparents... It's idiotic. But who cares about what young people have to say? The older generation didn't climb up the ladder of age to have it snatched from under them by a bunch of young people on their phones!

    The government in my country is making policies againts woman, and eventhough a large part of society tried to protest/do sth about it we didn't succeed. They are even trying to change the law in a way that they (as a ruling party) can't be changed 😡 My country's woman and Korean woman/women in Korea deserve better!!!
    Also, about treating the elderly - like what in the actual ****??? I had really no idea. There are countries in which languages you don't get half of respect while speaking to someone older compared to Korea. Yet, they treat the elderly way way way better than what you've just described.

      Definitely better to Google it like it has been said already, but a quick answer in a nutshell is that there hasn't been a systematic gender inequality that favours women over man, historically speaking, so the movements campaigning for equality started from wanting to change that situation. Then if you look into it you will see the different waves of feminism through history and the various definitions up to this day. Hope this helps!

    Hello! Never actually really active in commenting videos on UA-cam and kind of didn't actually binge watch in here in a while but been following you on instagram and UA-cam for a while and you know what just watched this video cause I felt bored and I just wanted to say I totally feel like you about the question regarding living long term in South Korea. I feel like I have to explain a bit my background with Korea and Korean. Actually I've been interested in Korea and studying Korean since high school and I will be 30 years old this year. Since then I always thought my life was definitely in South Korea. I studied 1 year in university in Busan in the Korean Business major after struggling with finding a bachelor degree I liked here in Italy. It was the best decision I made. But after one year of economically struggling in Korea I came back to Italy and after getting more money I departed for Korea again, this time Ulsan, I studied another year there. Again, because of economical problems and not really because of my decision I moved back to Italy. Luckily this was right before covid, in 2019. Back to Italy with my family I experienced a variety of jobs related to Korea including working for two major Korean companies. My mind has always been on Korea and should I go back or? Do I see myself log term there? And the answer is no. Even when I worked for the Korean companies I mentioned before I was away from my family because even if in Italy it was in another city quite far from the one my family is in. And you know what? I quit and came back to my hometown. Now I have a job here (which is not related to Korea but may be in the near future) , I'm with my family, I met a great boy who is now my boyfriend and at the same time I keep on with my passion about Korea and Korean. I think best way is finding a balance. Like living here in my hometown with my loved ones, having a job that I like related to Korea and going often to Korea by work trips or personal ones. I think this is the best way to enjoy both countries for me :)
