I have two Tikka’s, they’re great rifles that function flawlessly. They really serve their purpose and serve it well. That said the model 70 is a superior rifle, a highly refined version of the greatest bolt action ever designed, the Mauser 98, an action that got just about everything right. Pick up a model 70, cycle the bolt and point it and you will start to understand why so many hold it in such high regard. It truly is an American legend.

I just wish they were made in America. I heard they are made in Portugal or something? I’ve been interested in a Model 70 featherweight or tikka t3x hunter

@@AJohnson0325 The Model 70s are assembled in Portugal at the Browning/FN Viana plant. The actions & barrels & stocks are still USA made. They assemble the whole rifle at the Viana plant and then ship them back to the States. Workmanship is superb on the Model 70 rifles; IMHO they're one of the very best factory rifles that money can buy. I had a Tikka T3x SuperLite for a few years, purchased with the intent of making it my lightweight alpine rifle. I bought it in 6.5 Creedmoor, first & only rifle I've ever bought in the chambering. I mounted up a Leupold VX3i 2.5-8x36mm scope in Talley Lightweight rings and thought that it would make for a perfect mountain rifle. However, as much as I wanted to love the Tikka, I just never did. It did shoot pretty good, not house afire status, but honest 1 inch groups firing Federal Premium 140 grain Nosler AccuBonds. I understand that sighting in only 1 load means that I could very well have left out an even tighter shooting load. I will say also that Tikka rifles come from the factory with outstanding triggers. I didn't even touch the one on mine, sucker broke like an icicle. But I just never warmed up to the plasticky-ness of the Tikka; the detachable box magazine alone was a huge turn-off. I did take the Tikka mule deer hunting a couple of times, although it never got to take down a big muley buck. I ended up selling the Tikka and have not bought another one since. On the other hand, I am the proud owner of six, hopefully soon-to-be seven, Winchester Model 70 rifles. Ironically enough, the only synthetic stocked M70 I own is an early production Extreme Weather SS in 30-06 SPRG. The rest of them are pretty wood stocked rifles, including a drop-dead gorgeous Super Grade Maple in 270 Winchester. I also prefer the pre-'64 CRF action on the Model 70 vs the push feed action that the Tikka is equipped with. The Tikka rifles are well made & accurate, very much a Glock of the rifle world. The M70 is like a fine S&W M29 or Colt Python, a beautiful expression of the gunmakers' art. I don't miss the Tikka, yet I cannot wait to add another Model 70. YMMV.

I’m a lefty so owning a rare model 70 left hand sporter 300wsm I’ll never be able to get another one. they don’t make them anymore and only made them a handful of years out of New Haven Connecticut. Rifle is sub moa factory. I just changed the trigger spring and adjusted it so it’s 2 1/2lbs. I like the throw back heritage of the m70 sporter.

Not gonna knock the tikka, and I’ve shot them and handled them. I have to say they are smooth and the features/build is solid. However, I’ve got a few model 70s and they are the Cadillac of rifles. Truly the “rifleman’s rifle”. The action (full claw control round feed) is butter smooth and very reliant. I’d highly recommend buying the model 70 pre64 style. It’s an old school build with high quality. Now, if your looking for a deer rifle, especially whitetail…..consider the tikka for its cost but past that if you ever think you are gonna go elk or mule deer hunting; heck even Africa, go with the model 70. The super grade is so well built it’s a rifle of legacy to kids, friends, and long past your time on this Earth. I do not regret the money spent on any of my model 70s. I highly recommend and if you want an updated model 70 with say synthetic stock; they have those too. Well worth the purchase. @10:25 I agree with your review while heartedly. Thanks for sharing. Good luck and be safe out there. 😃👍🏻

I own both. The Tikka (t3x ultralite - 6.5 Creedmore ) action is smooth as silk, and the rifle is lightweight. Is is accurate. I purchased it for my nephew to use as he is new to hunting. I have four Model 70’s - 264wm, 300wm, 338wm, and a custom 280 ackley improved. Needless to say, I like Model 70’s! The 264, 300, and 280AI are all configured the same. But the 280 AI goes hunting the most often. I really like the claw extractor and the 3 position safety on the Model 70’s. In my opinion, those two things, developed by Paul Mauser around 1900, are still the best ever devised. They are both flawless.
All things considered, in my opinion, the Model 70 is the better rifle. That said, it’s hard to ignore the quality of the Tikka. It’s lighter in weight - if that will be an issue for you (for me it is not), has a very smooth action and trigger. Is money will be a deciding factor for you, hard to beat a Tikka for the price. Pick up both, and see which feels better to you. Then buy it and go hunting!

Have a synthetic T3x lite in 300WSM and a walnut featherweight M70 in 30-06. Used to have a T3x wood stock hunter in 308--very accurate but didn't care for the Tikka wood stock and didn't fit me well. Love both my synthetic T3x and M70. The M70 is a higher quality rifle. For most of my hunting, I prefer the M70, but for hunting open country the T3x is my go-to rifle. If I had to pick one rifle for the rest of my life, it would be a M70. Have not handled another rifle that compares. M70 build quality, weight, CRF, accuracy, materials, safety, reliability, fit and balance are all ideal. That said, you can't go wrong with either a synthetic Tikka or M70 for any big game in North America other than Brown Bear (where the M70 in 338WM or 375H&H is definitely the best choice).

I own and like them both. I think the Winchester is the better rifle overall, but the Tikka is the one I'm probably more likely to grab when I'm going deer hunting. A Model 70 Featherweight is probably the better comparison handling-wise. Winchester has the better action, safety, and recoil lug. Tikka is likely more accurate out of the box and has a good factory trigger. It's tough, old school craftsmanship versus modern, economical shortcuts and efficiency.

I own both so no one sided experience here. Anybody that thinks the Tikka is the better shooter is a fanboy and is repeating what they've heard. They're both fine rifles much more capable than the vast majority of shooters. They're both machined/made well but the the newer FN owned Win Model 70s are just better. The Win's action is one solid piece including the recoil lug which is much more difficult to machine and offers less parts. It's also easier to bed the stock since there isn't a separate recoil lug as on the Tikka. The Win's controlled round feed is the biggest difference between the two and preferred when hunting in bear country or somewhere animals charge. They are both fine rifles but I'd take the Model 70 any day over the Tikka. Also, something almost nobody gets... both safeties lock the bolt which is a necessaity for carrying on a pack frame. Nothing worse than your bolt catching on brush, opening your action and having rounds fall out (especially if you don't notice right away).

If your going to Africa or Alaska I’d say get the Winchester. That being said I have two rifles I built (300 wsm and 6mm XC) on Tikka actions, you would have to pry out of my cold dead hands! The Tikka actions and even the factory triggers are top notch. The stocks suck. I would also like to see Tikka up all their barrel twist rates by one, but that will never happen! The Tikka recoil lug system gets a bad rap in this video but if you ditch the factory stock, you can get an aftermarket stock with an aluminum block integrated with a recoil lug as part of the block which is as solid as any one piece action/recoil lug design. In short, save weight, get a Tikka and ditch the factory stock.

For the Super Grade, that's true. But the Featherweight Model 70 is only about $100 more than the Tikka that was shown, and is definitely more in line with an apples to apples comparison with the T3X being the light version. The Featherweight has a slightly lighter barrel contour and a slightly lighter stock. The Super Grade has fancier wood and better bluing, but the actions are the exact same.

Your comparison isn’t viable because the 70 supergrade is a hand polished machine whereas a run of the mill both guns are 70 degrees. The supergrade is a fit and finish standard it would’ve been more efficient to compare a Sako ( higher finish ) than the tikka or use the Winchester featherweight or Extreme weather . I own a standard sporter model 70 and it would be the fairest comparison. Again TIKKA wins out of the box sub moa guarantee . copying the Remington 700 recoil lug etc . Even with Winchester Supergrade comparing in the video will run a Canuck 2000-2600 vs 1200 for the tikka . Winchester does not have a sub moa guarantee. The 70 supergrade is a fine rifle own one in 6.8 but can’t compare a Lincoln continental to a Chevrolet Camaro and expect a similar result. The fairest would’ve been any other model than the supergrade demonstrated as the fit and finish of the supergrade is far more akin to The 700 BDL custom deluxes , Weatherby mark 5 etc

    • @chrisgreenaway6696
      @chrisgreenaway6696 18 днів тому

This is a good overview. But The 70 shown is a Rifle that will see few hunting trips and be a mantle rifle sure kill deer absolutely. But the Tikka will day in day out perform the supergrade, in number of sales plus is a rather the high end of the low end ( low end meaning everyday mans rifle ) it is far superior to its competitors ( Remington 783 ruger American Gen 2 savage axis 2) and really it’s only competition in this price range is the Weatherby Vanguard . Begara and stuff are the next rung , Remington 700s are being remade to supposedly a higher standard than pre bankruptcy. The top rung Supergrades , Mark V s Sakos are a rifle that won’t enjoy many hunts or long trips in the mountains . Most will climb in a stand five to ten times per life and range trip once a year and a conversation piece around the campfire

I'd say Tikka t3x for sure then Weatherby then model 70 then rem 700 if brand new but if u can find a used rem700 n win model 70 from early 90s or older go with them back then in my opinion 700s are the best ever made n 70s not far behind but now in 2020s tikka t3x are best followed by Bergara ridge wilderness I recently got 2 model 70s from early 2000s from serial #s in 270wsm n 7mmwsm they are ok but don't compare to my grandpa's pre 64 model 70 in 270win but it isn't as good to me as my dad's rem 700 in 7mag he bought back in 1970

I’m with you, tikka tx3 weatherby Bergara ridge and model 70 are all the top rifles on the market along with sako models Remington 700s too and the old school rifles typically are said to have better quality agreed, iv made my choice on the model 70 to be my first rifle I want either a feigherweight or super grade, and than I also want a model 70 safari for the biggest game

Can you help me select the right caliber for my guns? What is the most versatile caliber that can take ANY game from small game to the biggest game on earth, I was looking at .300 win mag, 30-06, 270 Winchester and the 375 h&h. What do you think?

@@jmgates09the new model 70’s are the best quality 70’s ever built. Stuff from the early 90’s was some of the worst winchesters ever made.

I have shot a model 70 and looked at many of them before. I would say in terms of quality and finer craftsmanship, the model 70 would take this one. The Teaka is really nice, but the feel and build quality/components does not match the model 70 in this case. However, tikka rifles are deadly accurate and this particular model that you reviewed is very light weight so they did things for a reason, they made parts plastic for a reason. It’s kind of an unfair comparison for these two particular models. Both are very nice rifles, but I would prefer the Tikka as far as accuracy and weight goes

Tikka t3x vs Winchester M70 SUPERGRADE to be clear. Although the M70 Supergrade is probably $400 more to start with, my money goes with the Tikka. Tikka rifles simply are the best VALUE right out of the box. Yea, that Supergrade looks nice, but does it shoot with the Tikka? I really doubt it. OUT!!

@@jonfisher9960 Hate to pop your bubble Jon but yea, that Tikka will outshoot a model 70 just about everyday of the week, stock right out of the box. Besides that you missed my point. I said the Tikka is the best VALUE between the two for the money spent. And it is!!! Sako and Tikka were building rifles before Winchester was ever thought of. Don't get me wrong, I love model 70's and to this day I still own a couple of them but I've also owned 2 different 70's that wouldn't hold 5 shots on a 12" paper plate at 100 yards. They were both re-barreled at Winchester New Haven and came back fine. That said your famous old M-70's are now owned by Fabrique National and are all built overseas. Pretty they are, I'll give you that but as a well put together rifle, not so much. Anyway, take care and if you own a 70, ENJOY!!

@@sergiov4847 Tikkakoski, with alot of history along the way to present day originated in 1893 in Central Finland. So, you are correct. Winchester is a little older. At any rate Tikka has had skin in the game for a long time and build one heck of a rifle for the money. I still believe they deliver the best VALUE to the consumer. I've owned many M-70's throughout my life and not one of them would outperform a Tikka rifle right out of the box. Thats my experience. Your mileage may differ. Take care!!
