I think Laura Bates summed things up when she said that with a rotten government , rotten police force , (and rotten and powerful corporations etc ) ,"it's hard to imagine that much is going to change".
To me , this begs the question "how can one live HAPPILY in a world that is possibly incurably rotten ?"
I've been finding the practice of mindfulness very helpful ......difficult but helpful . Its the only effective antidote to political despair that I've come across in my 72 years .
Political change is important and necessary if we're to continue living on the planet , but id never want my happiness to solely depend on something that unpredictable , and unreliable . If the powerful , poison and destroy the planet , at least I plan to go down with a serene smile on my face .

I am a female who as worked in male dominated fields all my life. My experience is that misoyny is increasing to a level I have never experienced before. The real problem is that the way these people act is just under the legal threshhold of what is deemed as 'threats',' harassment' and 'stalking'. Even when you have evidence of persistent behaviours of individuals over time. Women are viewed by the police as been 'too sensitive', maybe we should 'just behave'. It's awful and my heart goes out to all of us suffering at the hands of a misogynist, it's so alarming and distressing to be treated as such, and laws need to change.

Absolutely. And with how sexist the police forces always are as well! All the SA the MET cops just ignored is horrifying. They're all like that.
Meanwhile, you have men like @lestrem11 who are too scared to speak because they don't really see women as just people. If you only plan to speak to a woman as a coworker, there's nothing to be worried about. If you don't understand what's inappropriate, that's a whole separate issue. One you can correct through therapy.
Betcha he doesn't ever speak up to stop sexist abuse either. Or any other kind of bigotry. I bet he laughs when it's just "the boys." Then he wonders why women don't like him, I'm sure.

It's' not often I listen to a stream twice in a row but Owen really had the best and most timely of guests here. As a man I am disgusted by what Laurence Fox did. Women need to have legal recourse to this sort of thing and Laura was remarkably calm and civilised about what must be so enraging. She also hit the nail on the head about a "ticking time bomb" where talented British women are being denied or actively avoid pursuing positions of power as they will be judged sexually.
We should not give people like Mr Fox an inch of any public space and he should be shamed and harassed and organisations that fund him know that decent ordinary men have mothers, sisters, daughters and partners and this sort of stuff is just unacceptable,
    Great job Owen!

Part of the explanation maybe is our (I'm 64) generation thought these gender roles were 'normal', so there was no need for men to feel challenged? Feminism has empowered women in the last 20 years and some men find this threatening? I've listened to Laura's views before, and while she obviously appeals to feminists - she perfectly exemplifies how modern feminism fails men by failing to provide a viable vision of positive masculinity.
If you look at the root cause of this whole furore - Ava's dismissal of the idea that a 'Minister for Men' should instead be a 'Minister for Mental Health' - you see that there is a fundamental delusion regarding the innate gender differences between men and women. Feminists often conceptualize these differences as a 'by-product of the Patriarchy' - but that's far from the full picture.
The problem we currently see is that proponents of "Traditional Masculinity" are mostly conservative and fail to incorporate many of the valid concerns of feminism. While proponents of Feminism are the exact opposite - their vision of eradicating 'Toxic Masculinity' fails to incorporate 'Traditional Masculinity' and presents a 'feminized' vision of what men can and should be.
The thing is - that feminist vision actually does work for some men - getting those men to open up about their feelings and communicate is a very positive thing. Getting men to feel more open about expressing their 'vulnerability' is great. The very big BUT in the equation is that I don't think that approach works for all men.
Men, on average, are simply wired differently. And this feminized vision of male mental health only addresses half of the picture. It provides a wonderful mother figure for men. But where is the father figure?
I think we need a nuanced discussion about the complementary value of combining matriarchal AND patriarchal guidance.

Afterwards while working for the UN where equality is, supposedly paramount, haha, at most meetings, including men and women, the woman is talked over more often than not and whatever you do you must not get upset otherwise this proves that women are too emotional and sensitive and lastly once you get to a certain level in the company you will see younger men being promoted over you because nudge nudge wink wink they will be more willing to put in more hours.
All the above attitudes are still alive and kicking today

      MIDDLE CLASS VIOLENCE
Heroes are created by violence and coercion. Often the violence and coercion are of the kind employed by middle- and upper-class families in bringing up their children.
Such families set high standards, punish failure with rejection and humiliation, and, with physical punishments, teach an indifference to physical suffering.
Children brought up this way can often feel powerless.
To give themselves a sense of power and to maintain themselves as individuals they can turn against their parents/ teachers/ State and use what the parent/ teachers/ State taught them to become revolutionaries.
Charles A. Russell and Bowman H. Miller drew a sociological profile of a terrorist, based on a compilation and analysis of published data involving over 350 individual terrorist cadres and leaders from Argentinian, Brazilian, German, Iranian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Palestinian, Spanish, Turkish, and Uruguayan groups active between 1966 and 1976. They focused in particular on eighteen groups, examining the ‘modern urban terrorist’, as opposed to the rural guerrilla fighter.
The groups included those engaged in transnational actions (such as the Japanese Red Army) as well as those involved locally and committed solely to ethnic struggles … ‘Over two thirds came from the middle or upper classes in their respective nations or areas. In most instances their parents were professional people (doctors, lawyers, engineers …), government employees, diplomats, clergymen, military officers, or sometimes even police officials.
Although these parents were part of the existing social and economic systems, many of them had been frustrated in their efforts to use them as vehicles for upward … mobility.’Clearly, terrorism reflects the old maxim that revolutions are made more by those with raised expectations than by the most severely repressed … ‘Two thirds … are persons with some university training, university graduates, or postgraduate students.’
The ratio rises to 75 percent among the Latin American groups … Most were educated abroad and spoke a second language. Most of the Turkish People’s Liberation Army members were Middle Eastern Technical University students or graduates. George Habash, head of the PFLP (the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine), is a medical doctor. Yasser Arafat, who formally renounced terrorism in the 1985 Cairo Declaration of the PLO (the Palestine Liberation Organization), is a graduate engineer. Giangjacomo Feltrinelli, a millionaire book publisher, was a major figure in Leftist Italian terrorism … Che Guevara was a physician, Andreas Baader an attorney. The Weather Underground, also called the Weathermen - all white, middle- or upper-class, and educated - followed this pattern … Moroccan sociologist and feminist theorist Fatima Mernissi warns that the fundamentalist is neither uneducated nor uncultured. Rowe, Dorothy. Wanting Everything
@thomasdouglas2732 well went to art school hung out with goldsmith kids was very liberal I was involved in the occupy movement . After brexit trump I came to realise allot of the leftist where anti democratic angry bunch who didn’t believe in anything they just where against the old order of things. Middle class kids who say they wanted to free the working class but in fact saw them as racist and uneducated. They became obsessed with gender and race and no longer talked about economic inequality. The world view Peter offers was more grounded in history and how countries had previously been successful his points of view came from logic and morality not a utopian idea based of hate of the powerful

The black hole of the bourgeoisie
Agamben's idea of a radical politics leading towards what he refers to as the coming community" lies in the contradictions surrounding the formation of the contemporary subject. Claiming that there are no longer social classes, only a single planetary petty bourgeoisie in which all the old classes are dissolved, Agamben is dismayed at the level of nihilism to which this class has sunk, particularly in its refusal of any recognizable social identity or authentic discourse by which it might claim power.
      IN THIS SENSE THE PETTY
      BOURGEOSIE IS BOTH BLANDLY
      HOMOGENEOUS AND AKIN TO A
      BLACK HOLE
Agamben: “That which constituted the truth and falsity of the peoples and
generations that have followed one another on the earth - differences of
language, of dialect, of character, of custom, and even the physical
particularities of each person - has lost any meaning for [the petty
bourgeoisie] and any capacity for expression and communication.”
And yet Agamben believes that there is one factor - death - that eludes
the grasp of the petty bourgeoisie, forcing an acknowledgement:
THAT EVEN LIFE IN ITS NAKEDNESS IS, IN TRUTH,IMPROPER AND PURELY EXTERIOR TO THEM, THAT FOR THEM THERE IS NO
      SHELTER ON EARTH.
THE PLANETARY PETTY BOURGEOISIE IS PROBABLY THE FORM IN WHICH HUMANITY IS MOVING TOWARDS ITS OWN DE5TRUCTION.
      Language at degree zero
Agamben’s philosophical approach differs significantly from that of
Jacques Derrida. For Derrida, identity is never wholly identical with itself
      - absolute oneness or consciousness (with oneself) is a fantasy. As a
consequence, language and meaning are subject to a constant and
infinite process of deferral or postponement of meaning. However, for
Agamben, Primo Levi's work and Melville’s story “Bartleby” reveal that
language can exist at a “degree zero”.
THIS "DEGREE ZERO" IS A NON-PRESENCE THAT AMOUNTS TO A GAP, A DEACTIVATED SPACE OF ZERO
      SYMBOLIC VALUE.
Derrida conceives of a future time beyond metaphysics as an inevitable,
deferred and as yet unknown prospect. For Agamben, future time -
-Messianic" time, a Jewish theological term for the time following the
Coming of the Messiah - uses, contracts, hollows and nullifies linear,
`chronological time in order to prepare its end.
      CHRONOLOGICAL TIME IS
      ALWAYS ON THE VERGE OF
      BEING SEIZEDOY MESSIANIC
      TIME TO OPEN THE POSSIBILITY
      FOR HARMONY AND REDEMPTION
      PROFANED OF THEIR RELIGIOUS
      ASSOCIATIONS.
Agamben describes the preparation for the end of time with the image of
an animal that gathers itself before lunging.

@@gerryburntwood9617 I have watched the interview quite a few times, thank you, so you can retract your petty & clutching at straws insults. I don’t need to go to ‘far right media’, whatever that may be in your mind. Ava Evans was debating the issue with comedian Geoff Norcott, who has written a new book The British Bloke Decoded, amid calls from Tory MP Nick Fletcher for a minister for men. Ava Evans said, in response to Geoff Norcotts reasoned & sensible ideas that there should be specific, targeted help for the very high numbers of male suicide, “I think it feeds into the culture war a little bit, this minister for men argument. In my mind, there should be a minister for mental health which should be all-encompassing... It's a crisis which is endemic throughout the country and not specific to men. I think a lot of men bandy this about to sort of make an enemy out of women,” Which, frankly is lazy disingenuous diversion from & dismissal of the issue at hand. Geoff Norcott is quite right - there does need to be specific targeted action to address the male suicide issue. For anyone to dismiss the same & say men cannot have targeted help as it must be help for everyone otherwise it makes an enemy out of women is frankly disgusting. And in my view it is far worse to dismiss hundreds of thousands of male suicide as unimportant as compared to ‘making an enemy of women’ than to stupidly say ‘who would want to shag her’. Fox was correct to criticise her abhorrent stance but sadly distracted entirely from the important message by including a flippant crass comment.

@@LaLeMayI agree with your comments and I don’t believe Laurence Fox should apologise to Ava after she dismissed men’s issues as well as stating how men should be afraid of false accusations, meaning that she’s fine with false accusations being weaponised to ruin men’s lives.

@@drewyetti I agree entirely. Ava Evans is a sour, manipulative, arrogant misandrist spreading hate for both men & women. She herself has said numerous times of men she doesn’t like ‘I wouldn’t shag him’. She also advocates for men to colonise women’s safe spaces & language. She is wholly abhorrent

How can Fox be so deluded to think that Ava would even consider getting into bed with him?
Remember, the brain is the largest erogenous zone, and, on the other hand, can he check a mirror?
    Is he a vampire?

How can anybody believe he wouldn't? Let's face facts here.. If Lawrence Fox wouldn't "shag" a woman because she has different political opinions to himself, he would already be shacked up with Anne Widdicome.
