  • In todays instructional video, How to Fish Spoons for Trout, I will go over everything I have learned about this productive technique. Spoon fishing is an extremely productive method when targeting trout. I have discovered that this method of fishing is popular in northern California but seems to be sometimes overlooked down here in southern California.
    I will cover rods, reels, line, colors, styles, trout anatomy/behavior, and spoon fishing techniques to make your next trip to the lake successful and answer the question, How to fish spoons for trout.

    When I was a kid in the 50s a red and white daredevil was 25 cents and all I could afford. Would tie a fly about two feet above it and could catch fish on both.

    This is a tremendous video. I'm an avid trout fisherman in my 70s, and small spoons are the fishing method I most often use. I use Phenix Elixir and Mirage rods. I agree with all of your insights. I attach lures to clips sometimes, but I prefer a split ring rather than a clip. I'm less apt to get a little bit of grass on the split ring. I retrieve slightly differently, but your method will be effective. Thanks very much for this great video.

    Another video with years of knowledge being shared! Every little bit helps. I'm at the budget stage right now spending $50-100 per spinner rod and reel combos. I've always wondered if the budget set ups are really that much different than more expensive ones. I used to live right by Phenix rods and never knew they made too notch rods 😂 . Now I see their rods everywhere.

    • @SeaSpankerOutdoors
      @SeaSpankerOutdoors  2 роки тому +1

      Most of my spinning set ups are around $100 or less as well and work great. But if you start getting real into working lures its a night and day difference from my other rods. I now have 4 different phenix rods that I use for different fishing techniques and I love em. Just dont love the price tag haha

    Hey Rob Awesome Video A+. I just troll a fly around and catch up to 10lb. Rainbows at the local stocker lake. Now that I have figured that out I'm going to run Spinning gear on one rod. I like spoons alot as I have Commercial Salmon fished where Spoons are an essential tool catching awesome Salmon. Anyways I need a new challenge and was given and bought much spinning gear in the last year. Just about everything on clearance,old stock, garage sale Penny's on the dollar. So far the fly still has caught the biggest trout but some days the lures out fish the fly. I've yet to catch a trout on a spoon but after watching this video. Like the barrel swivels I've put them on a bunch of Flatfish with single hooks. You'll find swivels on the big Tomic Salmon plugs that Commercial Salmon Fisherman use.

    • @SeaSpankerOutdoors
      @SeaSpankerOutdoors  Рік тому

      You can use braid straight to the spoon as long as its not super bright colored. The darker colored braids wont be seen as the spoon is moving and they dont have time to inspect it.
      Im curious why your going 12-15lb unless your going for something other than trout. For trout I use 4lb Phenix Iron Feather Braid. If you’re gonna stick with 12-15lb I recommend Daiwa J Braid. Really good line for my heavier applications. Thats what I use for the monster lahontan cuttys at pyramid lake NV. For that I use 8 & 10lb test.

As a begginer , I find fishing as a contact sport lately . Very crowded in local parks and no etiquette with a few anglers. Great channel subscribed a day or 2 ago. Is there a way of reducing or avoiding line twists with Rooster-tails? We used to troll them behind small boats at Big Bear and the old Anaheim Lake. I remember the insane amount of twist every time the spinner was brought in. Anything you can suggest that might help? Maybe a tiny "ball-bearing" swivel attached directly to the Rooster-tail? --- If you've answered this in another video, rather than wasting your time, just let me know. Thank you!

    • @SeaSpankerOutdoors
      @SeaSpankerOutdoors  3 роки тому +2

      No worries. Best thing Ive found for that are chain swivels. You just tie them in line a few feet up from your spinner and it will prevent all that line twist. I use them alot trolling deep water at Tahoe for mackinaw. Those fluorocarbon lines don't stretch and are less forgiving on lesser gear with drags that aren't smooth as silk like those sweet stradics you got.
