I am lucky enough ( and sadly old enough) to have seen him performing with The Rollins Band in Sydney and then many years later attend his spoken word/social commentary show in Cairns. Complex, fascinating, driven individual. Met him after the show and he was unexpectedly charming.
Growing up, Henry Rollins and his band were my preacher, my teacher, my therapist, my best friend. His music helped me work out a lot of issues. This song ambushed me in my feels the first time I heard it. Especially that part “if you could see the you that I see, you’d see yourself so differently…” Dang 🎯
"Shine" is the best of Rollins Band. It kind of sums up Henry Rollins' personal philosophy. From his days with Black Flag you should check out "Rise Above" one of the best punk songs ever.
Black Flag is probably what Rollins is most known for... that and his Spoken word stuff. Black Flag should go on the list... they're a super important punk band.
Great song. I saw the Rollins band open for the Beastie Boys in 1992. It was at a place that used to be a skating rink in Glen Burnie Maryland. Rollins band was great that night. Beastie Boys were awesome too.
The original Rollins Band had Chris Haskett on guitar, Andrew Weiss on bass and Sim Cain on drums, with Theo Van Rock mixing the group. Melvin Gibbs later joined on bass after Andrew left (fired?); after a while Henry changed the lineup to Jim Wilson on guitar and the late Jason Mackenroth on drums (the bass player's name escapes me right now). The old line-up was brought back before Henry pretty much stopped making music, saying he felt "too old" for gigging in bands. He still keeps busy at nearly 60 years of age!
Rollins band was a underrated band . But i always had to be n the rite mood for them. Nice job T ! Whiskey Myers ...bury my bones for T and Stone for ms T !
" Illumination " and "Money Train " are great Rollins Band tracks. Thanks for this, love Rollins and Rollins Band, always felt they were uner appreciated.
Loved this band, still listen to them regularly in the gym. I would highly recommend an Independent film Henry did back in 2015, titled 'He Never Died', very intense role and a really excellent film. This is a trailer for it: ua-cam.com/video/WyWralJ2pkk/v-deo.html
I was a big fan in the late 90s/2000s got a few books of his poetry and writing, it's good stuff if you're in the right mood for it. To me, this is just "hard" blues rock, it's really good jam music. Rollins Band in this era were near faultless - the later album "Weight" is stunning + Alien Blueprint's a stunningly positive/self-help track.
New sub…love your commentary. Rollins has fought for “right” for years and yes…talent…but love first. His talent lets him spread the idea of equality and love through his music.
"Your world falls down around you. You build up walls around you. You wear disgust like a crown" - The social media generation needs to listen the hell out of that.
Late to comment. This may have been written for the bass player but the lyrics makes angst recognizable. I can see thousands of teenagers having their eyes opened because they truly listened. Instant application to your perception of yourself.
damn, i was just thinking about this track after watching his 2018 spoken word on APrime.. i hate to be the one to say his last name is pronounced "rawllins".. but have a personal 2nd favorite song of both him & bassist called: "The Whole Truth" as a side project "Wartime" w/his bassist Andrew Weiss.. enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/P5COzcuvyho/v-deo.html (off the EP by Wartime "Fast Food For Thought", 1990)
Actually, he is one of the busiest men in show business, has been for years: radio host, TV roles, Independent film projects, author, activist, podcast, world traveler, spoken word performances, audiobooks, etc.
Henry Rollins is actually pretty well known for his spoken word performances as well. I've seen him live, he's enthralling.

I saw him do his spoken word in Houston at Numbers back in the 90s.

The entire album The End of Silence is GOLD!! I admit, this song IS me.
"Shine" is the best of Rollins Band. It kind of sums up Henry Rollins' personal philosophy. From his days with Black Flag you should check out "Rise Above" one of the best punk songs ever.
Hero time! You don’t know how many times I listen to that song to face the day…or maybe you do.
Wrong Man
Henry Rollins HARD VOLUME! Saved my life. For real. Then I ENDed myOF SILENCE!! Great vid man!!

I was there for that one too…L7 was the opener. I heard House of Pain was supposed to be there but ended up not playing.
@@lawrenceahtuck that's awesome. It was a great show
I found it…August 19th! www.last.fm/music/Beastie+Boys/+events/1992
@@lawrenceahtuck that's great
"Tearing" from "The End Of Silence" is a great track as well. The "Weight" album has some killer songs on it too.
Tearing shreds
Tearing is one of the best things Rollins ever committed to vinyl.
@@OttoMack1 agreed 100%
I gotta get away to see if I’m ok - if you survived the 90s you understand the line
"The Weight" is the LP that "Liar" was released on.

Is that the Andrew Weiss whoi was involved with early Ween albums?
Marcus Blake
@@caseyjones9359 indeed
@@ryanbrown3004 Thanks, couldn't remember his name at all.
@@t_bone12571 yeah, Marcus is the man🤘🏼🤘🏼

About time someone reacted to Rollins Band.. Fuck yes!! 💪💪💪💪💪

One of Henry’s heroes is James Brown. Incredibly tight musicianship. Rollins band is always a well oiled machine.

"Liar" was also The Rollins Band. That was Henry Rollins band after he was with Black Flag.
Hello man
I've been listening to that stuff since 1999
I apprectiate your review, Rollis is a true poet
"Your world falls down around you. You build up walls around you. You wear disgust like a crown" - The social media generation needs to listen the hell out of that.
Nice request. I'm sure there's a whole older group here who added punk, post punk to their listening in the late 70s
This album had the best rhythm section out of all the iterations of Rollins band - tight and in the pocket
Best Album rollins made... except for the Black flag stuff
Best musicians he ever worked with, sure if you have some Jazz guys around you😉👍

Great song, great album!
You got it in a BOX.
Rollins Band - What Have I Got
If you wanna hear one of the heaviest riffs ever...
Such a killer album. So many get tough songs. Same as the Weight album.
You have to do "tearing me apart" by Rollins
Rollins got me through some tough times as a angry teen, If you haven't id check out some stuff by Rancid
Come in and Burn is an amazing record..
A definite banger.
Oh, you should do more songs by them, like End of Something, Starve and L.A. Money Train :)
He yells at me while I gym all the time! Drill sergeant Rollins.
This band is legendary.
Marcus Blake on bass. Those guys also had a band called Mother Superior.
Andrew Weiss on bass....Melvin Gibbs comes later.
This album was Weiss from Weezer.
This song is a two-string bass.
Gibbs was on the next two records. He's the real deal too.
"Shame" is also a good one from this band.
Check out a song called Illumination there are two versions. Get the one on the album. It’s deep and intense. Also. Check out Get Some Go Again

Yeah-he gets it.
Great video but check pronunciation on Henry’s name my friend
Back up to Black Flag. TV Party is a good start 👍
The dude is more or less rapping.
Also "liar" is great
This is not a NICE song. I do love your YOUtooby bits an TAKE CARE. much
What the hell ever happened to Henry Rollins??
Actually, he is one of the busiest men in show business, has been for years: radio host, TV roles, Independent film projects, author, activist, podcast, world traveler, spoken word performances, audiobooks, etc.
He does standup comedy now
He does everything but music now, dudes a Renaissance man, always has been.
