George Carlin was on of those comedians that got better with age. We need more people on earth like George Carlin, Henry Rollins. Interesting people with something to say.

I was in line for the Rollins book signing at Tower that he references. George Carlin did indeed stop by and talked with some of us in line and posed for pics. He bought a Soul Coughing cassette. I was truly starstruck. Great guy. Rollins was cool, too.

You don't need to, man. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Compare the topics George talked about in his old specials and compare them to modern times. Apart from a few dated references to early tech and old actors and politicians, those specials aged beautifully. They still hold 100% true today as they did back in the day

I’m an old self-employed musician who spent (wasted?) his life playing bars, restaurants, Vegas lounges and Broadway musicals….basically a sell out, I guess. All they had to do was wave a check in my face. Anyway, once I was playing in a lounge act at the Casbah lounge at the Sahara in Vegas and Carlin was in the main room. We had a pretty good relationship with the maitre’d and he would let us in to watch Carlin’s stand-up routine. Years later I’m working at a Holiday Inn bar in Buena Park and Carlin’s staying at the hotel because his wife was working at a local theater. Well, because my band partner and I both grew up in New York listening to do-wop, we’re performing some obscure song by a “one hit wonder” group and Carlin’s out in the audience, hears the tune and comes up to me and asks me the name of the group. I’m completely blown away because this guy’s been my hero since I first saw him on Sullivan in a tux years ago. I tell him that I was in the lounge at the Sahara while he was in the main room and we’re talking like we’re two old friends meeting on a street in the Bronx after being apart for a long time. He was the most unpretentious, down to earth celebrity I have ever met in my life…..and incredibly talented to boot.

When Henry mentioned Lenny Bruce helping young comedians with their acts, it reminded me of Jerry Lewis, when we Teched the National Tour of "Damn Yankees" at Eisenhower Hall at West Point. While the Introduction Music would play before the curtain went up for the first act, Jerry would talk individually with the young Actors, and give them advice on their performances. He was very gentle with them. When he first arrived at the theater, our Crew was on Coffee Break, hanging out on the loading dock. Jerry came up and talked with us for a 1/2 hour, asked everyone's name and Never Forgot them! It was a Great Month in my career!

I have to agree. As someone who used to do lighting for films and concerts I've met all kinds of famous people, of varying levels. And most of the most famous of them were genuinely kind, considerate, polite people. It was the ones of middling, or lesser fame, or maybe some on their way up who thought they were owed something. And most of those never amounted to anything. You always catch more flies with honey, so to speak.
