  • The Haus des Meeres in the heart of Vienna is the Austria's largest aquarium, has long been a popular all-weather program for young and old.
The House of the Sea is located in the middle of Vienna - more precisely in the 6th district of Vienna in the Esterházypark and offers a home to more than 10,000 animals on around 5000 m 2 . In one of Vienna's three zoos, the focus is on keeping animals in aquariums that are actually native to the Mediterranean or tropical regions. You can also marvel at the terrarium department and the tropical house, as well as the so-called Krokipark in the Haus des Meeres.
    A few important info
There are plenty of leisure activities in Vienna and that the decision is not always easy. However, the House of the Sea should be at the top of your list
Every water rat should pay a visit to the countless animals that are housed in the eleven-story building: sharks, rays, water and tortoises, crocodiles, lizards of all kinds, snakes, freshwater and saltwater fish, birds, fruit bats, various monkeys, insects and much more. In the tropical house alone, around 500 animals live at lofty heights, which you can examine without bars or glass. It almost feels like a short vacation in the tropical rainforest - ideal if the account or the schedule would not allow a vacation in the jungle at the moment. Another, at first glance inconspicuous highlight is what is probably the longest ant trail in the world, which stretches over 70 meters and two floors.
A trip to the Haus des Meeres can easily last several hours, which is why i also recommend not to miss the ocean'sky café. Thanks to the terrace, you have an all-round view of Vienna while enjoying drinks and snacks. For special occasions you can even rent the location to organize your events in the Haus des Meeres with a view of the federal capital .The House of the Sea is open 365 days a year from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., A trip to the Haus des Meeres is therefore suitable in all weather conditions - whether with your babysitter children, your family, your date or alone it is definitely a suitable destination.
From 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. there is an info point where the biologists from the Haus des Meeres will specifically address the problem of the sea and pollution. Researchers have calculated that in almost 30 years there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.
Feedings (9.30 a.m. in the Mediterranean section, 10.30 a.m. in the hammerhead shark tank and 11.30 a.m. in the Atlantic tunnel) round off the World Ocean Day program in the House of the Sea.

The History of the House of the Sea
The House of the Sea was set up in a former flak tower from World War II. The flak tower was used as a fire escape tower until the end of the war. On the roof of the building was the so-called "Würzburgriese", a radar device that was protected in the shaft by 3.5 meter thick reinforced concrete walls in the event of air raids.
The Haus des Meeres was founded in 1957 - among other things with the intention of creating the European center for marine research in Vienna. In the decades that followed, the Haus des Meeres was continuously expanded, rebuilt, expanded and renovated. The turtle "Puppi" is the oldest resident of the House of the Sea and has been at home there since 1982
