- Learn how to record your electric guitar on your PC, Mac or iPad with an audio interface for guitar. Discover a range of audio interfaces at Amazon: amzn.to/2XZu1GZ (affiliate link) *
There are 3 main ways you can get a great recording of your electric guitar on your computer, via a suitable guitar recording interface: record direct; record the line out of your guitar amp; or use a mic to record your amp. This video will show you how to record your electric guitar in PC, Mac or iPad step-by-step in each of these three ways. (To record on iPad you'll need to buy the camera connection kit amzn.to/2YV8s6o (affiliate link *).
This is a recording tutorial for guitarists who complete beginners to home studio recording. It is not an advanced video on recording. But by the end you will know exactly what guitar recording gear you need, and the basics of how to set it up.
The focus in this video is on the guitar recording GEAR that you need. The best studio equipment to do the job. It is about recording hardware rather than software
If you get the hardware right then you can use any Recording Software: Pro Tools; Cubase; Garageband; Reaper; Mixcraft; Audacity.
Here is a summary of the kit you will need for each different recording method:
To record your guitar direct you will need:
Electric Guitar and Guitar Lead
A suitable Audio Interface with instrument input
(an excellent one would be the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd Gen) which you can find on Amazon here: amzn.to/2Yb8KFN (affiliate link))*
Any recording software - Garageband, Reaper, Audacity, Pro Tools, Cubase, Presonus Studio, the software that comes with your interace
To record guitar via the line output of your guitar amp you will need:
Electric Guitar plugged into effects pedals and guitar amp
Audio Interface with line input
(a popular choice would be the Behringer UMC204HD available on Amazon here: amzn.to/2YiLYjf (affiliate link))*
Appropriate audio cable - depending on the outputs of your amp
Recording software (see above)
To record electric guitar using a microphone to record the guitar amp you will need:
Electric guitar plugged into your effects pedals and amp
An audio interface with XLR mic input and built in pre-amp
(take a look at the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, one of the most popular budget guitar recording interfaces here on Amazon amzn.to/2JWWu6H (affiliate link) *
A Microphone and XLR lead
A mic stand
(Amazon do a good basic mic stand here amzn.to/2y2zMEu (aff link))*
Recording software as above
Or a portable digital recorder, which will allow you to record without needing a computer. You can transfer the recordings after. One of the most popular would be the Zoom H6 available here on Amazon amzn.to/2Y0bzhm (aff link) *

Hi there, greetings from Bolivia. I just viewed your video and found it very helpful. It is clear, consistent and well explained. Most of the principles to electric guitar also apply to bass playing which is what I do. I also prefer Reaper because I found it cheap and convenient. Congratulations.
Thank you so much!
