Thank you for making this review. Unlike other subjective reviews on UA-cam, you presented a scientific comparison backed by real world quantitative values you measured yourself and presented instead of just reading it off some specs sheet. This is what I consider true quality content.
If it's more expensive, newer, it obviously sounds better. Marketing trap.
Only a double blind test would tell.
THIS is the way to do a review! Very professional! *standing ovation*
Thanks brain!
Agree, not like the crappy videos made from cheap producers and musicians I. The U.S. that think they can review a product.
true. i saw so many bad videos before i found this
Dude this is a school lecture
@@JulianKrause Hi Julian, does the AIR mode on Focusrite even come close to a real ISA One's sound?
I am asking, because I got the Scarlett 2i2 Gen3, and while I like that AIR mode on it, it adds noise. And according to a sales rep, it's just an EQ.
Do you have a real ISA One to compare with?
Thank you in advance and for the good work!
an excellent independent review, well informed... And outstandingly presented
Outstanding review! In-depth, well explained and good insights into the benefits provided. Learned a great deal. Thank you!
This is probably *the* channel to go to for audio interface reviews - I can only think of a couple of others that are almost comparable, but the level of detail crammed into 12-13 minutes is always spot on - thank you 👌
One of the best reviews I've seen. Keep it up. Do some more with other interfaces, and comparisons.
Greetings from Brasil.
Most thorough and informative review I've ever seen on UA-cam. Bravo!
Hi Julian. Another excellent review, you’ve got the best technical audio/microphone channel on UA-cam. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks a lot! Btw I really liked your review of the Lavalier Go. Seems to be a pretty capable Lav.
Brilliant in depth video. I can see you went through some amount of work researching the important factors of what is a good audio interface. I got lucky finding your channel and I subscribed ! My 2nd gen 18i8 developed a hardware fault in the headphone section a few days ago si I call Tech support U.k ( I'm from Limerick, Ireland btw) and even though the warranty was over they decided to send me a replacement! That was really cool of them and I'm hoping it's a 3rd gen they send. Anyways, I just thought I'd show you some appreciation for the great video. Well done , Julian and Hello from Ireland! Tom.
Thanks a lot, this is super helpful!
I am planning to buy a Scarlett and an SM57/SM58 but I saw some people complaining about the gain problem. It's glad to know the low sensitivity mic can also go with this interface!
Best review i've ever seen, complete, didactic, entertaining and simple! Thank you!
Excellent review. I bought the 3rd Gen Focusrite Solo Studio and I'm very pleased with it. No latency that I can notice at all. The mic that's included in the Studio version is pretty good and so are the headphones. Can't go wrong with any of Focusrites products, they're well built and reliable; when you plug it in it just works and stays working.
Great review. Few people get into technical stuff, which, in my opinion, is the most important. Keep on the good work!
Awesome video! So much work and detail put into a review :-)
Now that is how you do a review, no gimmicks, and straight to the point, well done
Yooooo. I am overwhelmingly impressed by this review. Thank you ✌🏼
When towards the end he says the audio for this vid was recorded on this gear I had to stop and give this vid applause 👏🏼
Great touch 🙌
Excellent!!!
This is the first Focusrite 2i2 review that i can said that is COMPLETE
Thank you a lot for the vid
^.^
Thanks Julian - fantastically thorough review - hugely helpful!
Thank you so much. I have no words to express my gratitude for your professionalism and loveliness.
Thanks for this review. It covered all the points I was interested and more.
The one tiny point of criticism has been covered elsewhere, and isn’t worth belaboring. To be honest, back in the day I’d plug in and unplug mics into mixers without checking if phantom power was on (if it was off, you’d know because there’d be no input from the mic!)
Finally a reviewer I feel like I can trust and who really seems to knows his stuff. Awesome!!
By far that's the best non superficial review I've got about an home studio audio interface.
Thank you so much for this! You do incredible reviews. I love how you go into details and add visuals on the screen as well, it is so much easier for me to learn and absorb information this way :)
Well done Julian!
If you want to know the exact specs of a product then you know it’s been tested properly by Julian, good informative review and concentrates on what you should really need to know, cheers
Thanks a lot for making this in-depth review. I found exactly the information I was looking for, and I didn't think anyone would actually share this kind of info. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your work.
Thanks for this video. I was looking for exactly this.
2:35 Some days ago, a new Focusrite Control version came out. The interface now remembers if phantom power was turned on or off. 😊
i subbed just because the review was sooo pro hands up perfect
You're like Paul Davids for Electronics. Just found your channel tonight. Mighty glad I found you.
Very well made demo video. Accurate, concise and well-articulated presentation.
Great review! Can you also do a review on the presonus audio box 96 & The Audient id4 with chart comparison Data vs this scarlet 3rd gen
This is the best review I found on UA-cam so far.
Your reviews are the gold standard. Respect.
Outstanding review. Thank you!
I know there's other comparison vids but I'd be interested on your opinion on scarlett vs. clarett preamps. Maybe a comparison might be useful to some people, especially with your well thought out and easy to understand video style.
Hey Julian!
Awesome content man! it's really helpful and to be honest I've discovered your channel recently and I've been a big fan since then. I have a review request if you may: I wanna both record guitar well and record decent vocal stuff, out of a shit tonnnn of research I've discovered that I have to either go with NI Komplete audio MK II or an Audient. I know that Audients have good preamps but the sample rate of their inputs are only 96khz and on the NIs the sample rate is 196khz but I don't know how the preamps are. it would be a big big help to a fan if you do a review on those to specifically. I'm really in a bad dilemma. Thanx again for the helpful content man!
Great review. Thanks for your hard work testing all of this.
I thank you for such a thorough, clear and easy to understand video and explanation. This really helped me a lot. Great job!
Very good review! I'm interested in the headphone amp as well - would it handle 300ohm headphones like HD 650? Can you compare to UR22?
I really appreciate the level of detailed information within your content. I've been using a 2nd Gen Scarlett 18i8 at home for a few years now, but have been browsing around for something with a much smaller footprint and better direct guitar to VST amp sim RTL & dynamic range for my DIY "poor man's fractal" mobile rig. One that would also replace the current 16 bit Orange OMEC Teleport mini interface that's currently on my "fly date" board.
Thanks again for your impeccable data driven analysis & fine tuned level of scrutiny.
Cheers!
Is this Jason? (if so Hi Jason)
Best review of this product, and I must say, very neat video quality, so I’m not a singer and so I find the difference of the “Air“ mode very subtle
Awesome Julian. I have a 2i4 2nd gen but you taught me a lot about that model even though you weren't directly reviewing it.
Very professional Review by this Robot, it’s programmed very well 👍
3:05 I just referenced the manual and this device actually only has a frequency response of 20hz to 20000hz, despite the higher sample rates offered. I have a 18i8 gen 2 and it is great for general recording and for use with all of my current instruments. Recently I got a tascam dr-100 mk3 which has a response of up to 80khz! I got it for creating sound effects specifically though.
The manual is wrong then - they probably only measured to 20kHz, but it does go much further
@@catsfan2937 Interesting. I have never actually tested the actual response. The manual specifies the 20-20000 Hz, so I would assume it was a limitation of the architecture of the ADC and the low pass filter that would have been used with it.
Brilliant review - concise to the point, no waffle.............I'm sold...........I want one. Thank you Julian.
Great info Julian. I'm looking for a new interface and you made this video really informative.
Very thorough analysis, thanks Julian. Do you have a comparison video between the 2i2 and UA’s Apollo Twin? Rumor has it possibly MK3 in November and some of these used deals are becoming more attractive, though I’m not certain it justifies a 3-4x price over 2i2 (gen 2 in my case)
Note that you should use Air sparingly. Basically on whatever you want to stand out in the mix. Using it on everything creates a real high-end mess.
Julian... I thank you for your review of this product and have decided to purchase the 2i2 Gen3. You've provided, from what I can tell, a neutral (and thorough) review of the features and they are very compelling... Thanks again!
Great review! I really appreciate your excellent explanation of the Air mode. Thanks!
Du machst das sehr gut, dafür dass du ganz offensichtlich Deutsch als Muttersprache hast 👍
The second generation had this brightness that makes the good condenser mics full of extra sibilances, the so-called "air" seems to be a trick from focusrite, just saying... Great review!!!
WOW, das ist ein super umfangreiches Review. Alles was man vor dem Kauf wissen sollte. Danke dafür!
Super pro! Thank you very much Julian for your professional high quality reviews!
NO, NO! That "down-side" it's an up-side actually. You don't want to fry unprotected dynamic microphones when somebody connects an unknown microphone. Thumbs UP Focusrite!
uh, dude. dynamics dont fry with ph48. no beginner has ribbons anyway.
It's an upside indeed. But also dynamics don't fry with phantom power. You got it half right ;)
The “down-side” is a “down-side”. You don’t fry dynamic microphones as phantom power has no effect what so ever on dynamic microphones. The voltage exist between pins 1&2 and pins 1&3. There is no potential difference between pins 2&3. So there is no danger to dynamic microphones. They don’t even see a potential difference. It is only a possible danger to some ribbon mics. But no beginner has ribbon mics. And anyone who does have expensive vintage ribbon mics would know best practices to maintain ribbon mics.
@@protoman247 My SM58 got realy warm/hot once, after having it for 20 mins on 48v phantom. It still worked after that, though.

Yay, Im happpy I bought it. I was just curious what the air butten do. Gonna record all vox with it from now.
Most detailed video about 2i2 on internet, man even manufacturers can't even explain this way I'm subscribing just after watching on video
You definitely made the best review on this product!! Keep it up! Got my Sub!
Could you do a review of Audient's interface's?
So nerdy. I love it.
Very straight to the point review I've seen. Great Job
The best review. If you continue doing reviews like this you will rock big time.
Is there any benefit to the "air" mode button as opposed to doing it with an EQ in your favorite DAW? Is air mode just doing digital transformations or is it engaging some analog hardware on the audio interface?
I have the same question. In my admittedly limited understanding, a possible answer to our question is the fact that you can't boost detail that isn't present in the first place. Since air mode works at level of the signal that is presented to your recording gear, you will have those "details" in the first place. Whereas, if you try to emulate the same mid high boost using an EQ effect in the DAW, you may not be able to achieve it. Simply put, it's usually preferable to have the detail in the first place. And even if none of that really applies here, since you can turn Air on or off, you can just look at it as a more-or-less free option, as it doesn't appear to have added much if any cost to the unit.
Hi Mr Krause .... which would you choose for clean voice over.....the focusrite audio interface , or the dbx 286s...
I really need some guidance here, to help me decide...you are very good with these things
you need both. you cant use a dbx stand alone
@@brtcobra yes I know...but I was asking, If it would be better to just go with the focusrite interface, or both?
the dbx is not an audio interface itself, but a mic preamp and audio processor. You need an audio interface for the A/D conversion anyways, or a PCIe sound card to do the job.
What microphone will you be using, and what is your workflow?
The DBX 286s can add gain if you have a microphone that needs it and it can add some real-time processing, which could be nice for live streaming or podcasts where you won’t or can’t edit the audio afterwards. If you don’t need more than 56 db of gain or the signal processing, skip the extra complexity and cost of the DBX 286.
Excellent review. Thank you for clearing a lot of things.
This is the best review i have ever watch!! Thanks broo
Does this work well with windows 10? Is there no driver problems?
So far it worked fine, though one time it did blue screen my pc when I unplugged it. But when it is connected I never had an issue.
How does the Scarlett 3rd gen compare to the Clarett range in terms of preamp quality and A/D conversion?
😂 yeah I know
Couldnt find a single comparison between these 2
excellent review. Thanks for helping me make up my mind!
Hi Julian
Great review, keep up the good work. Best regards from Melbourne Australia
Audio interface testers often forget the playback quality. I listen to music much more often than I record music. Does it sound better than an average laptop or desktop PC audio chip? How does the playback quality compare to an USB DAC like Dragonfly, Audiolab Nano or Hugo2? Do I need also a DAC if want to enjoy high quality music, or does Scarlett solve this task well enough?
I have the 2nd gen and listening to my recorded tracks, they sound dark and not as bright. When playing an instrument or hearing your vocals, there’s that presence but once it’s recorded for some reason it’s gone.
Much clearer stereo field and sounds much better imho, compared to my built-in PC soundcard.
@@Sam-rz3rd Thank you very much.
Leave it to a German to have the best review lol
including german sheppard?
I thought he was British.
ok
Verzeihung was? Ich bin ab 3:02 eingeschlafen
@bookmarkthis they lack the English ability, even more than the average German lol
Best product review ever! Great job Julian!
Nice and complete review!
Congrats.
focusrite HIRE this guy FFS
Dude blinked. I saw it.
Noticed twice. Good game though.
Hey brother! Good job, thanks for your useful videos!
Nice job, Julian! Thanks!
Excellent video, lots of value. Thank you for your work.
Straight to the point and very clear, thanks so much for taking this approach to reviewing. Really a breath of fresh air amongst all of the weirdly hyped up subjective reviews on youtube. Thanks!
I love this. The attention to detail is incredible. Right up my street. Well done Julian. Currently pondering which DAI to purchase. Going to be recording guitar only (probably) with multiple mics, perhaps 2 SDCs and 1 LDC. Had looked at Roland Rubix 44 but keep getting drawn back to focusrite. New sub here
Excellent review, I'm upgrading from an old Tascam DP01 and this was really useful.
This review was fantastic! Great job man
Great review, thanks and keep up the good work :) very helpful!
Hooked my AKG C414 to my gen3 and it sounds great and agree that the air mode has its use. So far I like it.
Wow! Thanks for doing this review in 'the right way' doing scientific meassurements and not just opinions!
Julian, such brilliant in-depth videos! German order and efficiency, yesss!! :)
Great review as usual, Julian!
Excellent review, well done
Terrific review; very thorough. Thanks!
Thank you for all of your quality content.
Thanks for this video! I'm definitely buying this one!
Thank you for a very comprehensive and professional review!!!! I am seriously considering replacing my 2i2 1st gen with the 3rd gen.
Very informative presentation. Thank you.
Dude ……. I’m French Canadian …all of your "tutorials " are soooooo genuine….and English is my second language but I understand everything about what you are teaching !!! really helpful 🧐🤔🙂😲😁👍🤟🤟🤟✌️
Really good review and I like the way you explained how to use it. I just bought this and I’m getting the hang of it.
Excellent review - hard facts, well researched and presented in a right to the point manner.
Awesome work!
