Hi I know this video is ancient but I started with the 2i2 and have recently moved onto the focusrite itrack dock/iPad/Cubasis as my recording rig, and I wanted to say that the Focusrite components are exceptional. I'm still using the CM25 as my go to mic, along with a Shure SM57 for some applications. I blew out the headphones so those have to be replaced. Also wanted to say THANKS for giving us a detailed review of the products, it's always nice to see the gear being used in a real application by someone who is (presumably) not being paid to promote it. Also refreshing to see it put to use by an actual musician, I get so tired or software and hardware being demonstrated by people making crap electronic music haha. I don't normally follow people on UA-cam, but I think I'll make an exception in your case. It's a shame that you don't use Cubase/Cubasis, they could really benefit from having someone like yourself showing how to use their software. (Or I should say I could really benefit)
I started with the Scarlett Solo Bundle a few years ago. Over the past year I've upgraded all the pieces. Got a new computer. Started using reaper. Upgraded the headphones to the AKG 240s and then to Beyerdynamic DT990s (still use the AKGs or Focusrite phones for tracking because of the closed backs). Got myself an Audio Technica 2035 condenser mic (LOVE this mic, btw), a Shure SM58 and Shure SM57. I recently upgraded to the SSL 2+ interface. But I still use the mic cable. Haven't seen any reason to replace that yet. It's the perfect length if I'm recording right in front of my desk.
This is such a cool video! I love how you did that and showed people how accessible home recording is these days! Plus I really like how go from recording to mixing. Even if it's only with one riff or theme. Maybe you could do a series on how to record and mix different styles at home. Great work Warren!
I recently bought my 16 year-old a Scarlett Solo bundle for his birthday, which has the single channel version of the interface. Great set and wonderful quality for the money! Nice that you've given this set the thumbs up :)
Hi +edovinus Wonderful! Yes I was very impressed with it, I just love that for not much money we can start making music! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
It's already been mentioned in the comments, but setting the buffer size much lower will eliminate any latency (but will use more CPU ). Also the Scarlett 2i4 has additional PAD buttons on each channel which are awesome for hot pickups as you can use the Inst setting and attenuate the input so as not to clip.
Thank you! I've been umming and ahhing about this set for about a year now, and now thanks to your video I have a good feeling about it! Gonna go out and buy it this week :))))
Wonderful video!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm just about to dip my toes into the world of home recording, and I know I'm going to be a total caveman at the beginning. I'm a bass player / singer / keyboard player (The latter very badly though. In fact, if it was my main instrument, I'd probably starve!! haha) 46 years gigging (42 professionally) and this will be the first time sitting in front of the desk so to speak, as opposed to sitting behind it. I am very much looking forward to it, and thanks to your wonderful video demonstration, it's going to be fun delving into it. Once again many thanks. Sending you kindest regards, and very best wishes from Ireland
Today I just bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Studio Bundle its still in box ;-) Amazing way to teach very professional, keep making awesome content, I subscribed and like you channel. Love from Karachi-Pakistan.
I loved this interface! I started with the 2i2 and loved it so much that I stuck with the Scarlett range when I upgraded to the 18i20. Focusrite makes such great products!
Go down with the hardware buffer to 128 and you wont feel any latency at all...I'm using the scarlet for all my songs, I had the studio package but I returned it cause I did not like the mic. and I bought the Interface as a stand alone device, I wish I could have kept the headphones, cause they were good. Have a marvelous time recording :) Cheers
+Conny Conrad I was just about to say the same thing, about the buffer setting, but i thought i'd scroll down to see if someone else had "noticed" that :) The mic, judging by the size & shape, may well be something like an Alctron MC001 (aka. Apex 435) or some clone/rebrand of that. K67-type capsule (with a severe boost in the high-mids) with a linear Schoeps-type circuit - that's most likely what you didn't like about it :P
Hi +Conny Conrad Thanks for the info! I think for less than $200 for everything the mic sounds great! I liked the results, especially for the price! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi +Jvanmax Giudice Agreed! I just wanted to open it up for a few minutes and see how easy it was to use and it is very simple to use! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks so much. I've been using this for all my recordings and I didn't really make use of the direct monitoring. After watching your video, I am definitely gonna make use of it as the latency really got to me and affected my performances. Thanks a lot, Warren. :)
+Alejandro Melo No..you cannot have '0' latency @ 512 samples. Has nothing to do with the hardware. I am sure he can run his macbook/focusrite @ 256 or 128 samples with what he is doing (couple of wave recordings).
+Flipsh0t I was thinking the same thing. Crank that ASIO buffer size down until the CPU just starts to have trouble keeping up, then pick the next largest size. If you're happy working in 44.1 kHz sample rate, you can get away with some super small buffers like you've got. Makes for great near-zero latency recording and monitoring!
The great thing about this package for someone just starting out is that you get fairly good extras and a great interface for not too much money. If producing doesn't turn out to be your great passion then no great financial loss. 2i2's will certainly resell. If producing does turn out to be a great passion then you can and will expand. Even if you get a new and bigger interface, the 2i2 is a perfectly usable field interface. Even cheap headphones are handy to have around as extras and the microphone can also be assigned field duty so as not to risk your more expensive mics... recording Bull snorts at the rodeo or thunder and rain or whatnot.
Wow, I was looking for this demo earlier (didn't find it and didn't know about you, just getting started at a young 70 years old. I purchased this literally 3 hours before I saw this demo and am glad to know it was a wise choice. I play ukulele and keyboards so wanted an 'all in one' type system and there you have it. I expect to have it by middle of next week and the fun will start. Thanks very much for this video, it's very interesting and there are lots of nice tips on it to help get me going. 70 you wonder and now he's getting into it? Yup, I used to do IT work, all computers so technology has never scared me and didn't really get into that field professionally until I was 31. 2 years later I was the supervisor of my team. I've seen many be scared of tech but that's not me. I'm slower than I was a few years ago but still quite capable of learning and can hardly wait.....I'm what you would call a 'young 70'. Again thank you for this video. I will likely watch it a few times, there is a lot of value there.
I bought this exact bundle in 2014 and have found it to be excellent. I still use the CM25 for all vocals and acoustic guitars, and the same included headphones. I have only just (in 2021) upgraded to a newer interface.. the Scarlett 2i2 Gen 3
I have the same 2i2 I use for on the fly recording when I am not in the studio, or if I am lazy and rolling in the kitchen. :) - I noticed I was able to cure the latency issue by plugging the headphones straight into the laptop and assigning the output to built in audio. (I also have a 2010 macbook pro like yours, Warren, a dual core w/6gb RAM) - I have to say I love this interface. As long as you stay away from the red ring of death, these sound great plugging straight in /direct with a guitar or bass. I did not buy the full bundle, and my scarlet came with ableton light. For the money, (I paid well under $200 for mine in 2014). I think these are impossible to beat, especially for a very portable interface. You don't have to hassle with power cables, just keep in mind if you are running from your laptop, I ran into some weird artifacts if I was running straight from the battery of the laptop. The artifacts went away when I plugged the laptop into the wall with the power supply. The artifacts I experienced while running on the laptop without a power supply were exaggerated when using the phantom power. I would rate the 2i2 a 5 star product. Highly recommend this high value low cost interface. Way to be bold, Warren, great video demo!! Cheers!
Hi +Frederick Thorne Wonderful! Great tips!! Yes I have a simple set up and I love how easy it is to start making music!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
If you want to reduce the latency, reduce the "H/W Buffer Size:" in the Playback Engine settings. 256 Samples should work without pops/clicks and be low enough latency so as not to throw off your groove. Cheers!
+Stephen Tack Yeah for real dude! Just turn that sucker down! 512 is only useable for mixing. Tracking you'll need 256 or less. 256 should do the trick for most but some drummers might want 128.
I have been podcasting for about 3 years now, and I have a range of Dynamic mics. I also have outboard preamps and compressors to help the audio sound as pro as possible. I recently updated my interface to the 2i2 from the saffire 6 usb. Because when you use outboard preamps you dont need a great interface because you are not using the pres inside the interface. Now as a podcaster Dynamic mics are the way to go, but the little mic included in the 2i2 bundle is a great little mic. people throw words about like "entry level" or "Beginner mic" take no notice of that crap. if you know what you are doing you can get most mics to sound as good as you need. and this little mic has taken the place of my Rode Procaster for a while as it sounds great.
Is your system optimized for 512 playback engine???? When I track my guitars, I either use 128 or 256. I rarely have latency. Plus maybe Eleven is adding to the latency???? Try putting the eleven on an Aux and printing???
Wow... you know you're making me buy this system and subscribe to your course as well, don't you? Music is my passion!!! Since a kid I always knew I wanted to make something from music and you're helping, even if I'm already 35. Cheers from Portugal!!
Wow, I think I have discovered a new big channel, I follow 4 or 5 channels, and this is a new one. I have been producing music with a Pod Studio UX2 many years and I probably get this Scarlett 2i2 (not the bundle). You have made a really interesting video, showing the whole process. Incredibly useful. You have a new subscriber. PD: you couldn't low the buffer size to decrease the latency? recording hearing only the DI really bothers me. Would you choose this interface definitely in the range of under 200 usd?? THANK YOU!
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I purchased a Scarlett 2i2 some time ago. This video actually gave me the inspiration to set it all up and get started. You said you are not a professional singer but your technical skill made you one hell of professional singer 😆 Nice music. So this is how we create it. Thank you !!!
you put it on "line"! just to make a difference between line and instr (hi-Z) because "inst" is only for high-impedance (loud!) instruments like electric-guitars. but turning on the gain on line input blends the line to a mic input :-)

I was going to suggest this as well. Mine actually goes down to 64. This gets you close enough to real time monitoring while using your effects.
I go with 64 and 32 buffer too. Depends on PC I believe and my isn't the top one, just AMD 8x3.5Ghz and 16GB RAM.

Just bought this product to create on this musical journey. Your videos have really helped me to get started. God Bless.
I watched the whole 25 minutes, and WOW just thanks finally found my money's worth. Have been looking around for seperate mics, interface and headphones and this just makes it simple, just gotta learn that Cubase LE hope it's not that hard. Again thanks for this! =)
Hi Introman 101! Thanks ever so much for the great comment! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro whenever I want to record with the bundle my voice is very harsh and static and I don't know how to solve this problem.
I bought this and was a total novice. I didnt even know where to put mu cables in😂 no daw experience at all. But cubase is very simple if you learn the basics. There are a lot of great tutorials on youtube that will get you going in no time.
I've recently gotten into recording and this video deff helped a newbie like me with making a choice for starting gear. All the way from 2020 lol.
"I'm not a singer!" and then proceeds to hit the lines with your voice pitch perfect.
Hi Jay Kaufman you’re too kind my friend! I’m definitely!
Just bought the box itself used for $50! Very impressed.
Your knowledge about the sound environment and your guitar playing are both really superb.
Wow! Thanks ever so much!
You're a star, Warren! Learnt a ton. Thank you so much for this.
Thanks ever so much!
Hi +b13visuals yay!! Exactly what I intended!! More videos coming up! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Outstanding review of the Studio. Heck, this was an outstanding intro to recording and songwriting. Great job and thank you!
Great resource. Everybody should see this before attempting to record.
Thanks ever so much
Very useful and informative, thank you it's more or less answered all my questions I had about this product.
Thanks ever so much Tony!
Have a marvelous time recording :)
Cheers
+Conny Conrad I was just about to say the same thing, about the buffer setting, but i thought i'd scroll down to see if someone else had "noticed" that :)
The mic, judging by the size & shape, may well be something like an Alctron MC001 (aka.
We bought this for my little sister as a Christmas present. And it's relay great to start with music!!!
Hi +emvau01 Fantastic!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I would love to see how good you can make a song sound finished using this bundle!
Hi +Brent Tauro Great! Glad I was able help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hardware buffer at 512 will introduce latency as well.. I run my hardware at 48. (depends on your setup)
yeah, with that hardware is very hard have "0" latency on 512 samples
+Alejandro Melo No..you cannot have '0' latency @ 512 samples. Has nothing to do with the hardware. I am sure he can run his macbook/focusrite @ 256 or 128 samples with what he is doing (couple of wave recordings).
+Flipsh0t I was thinking the same thing. Crank that ASIO buffer size down until the CPU just starts to have trouble keeping up, then pick the next largest size. If you're happy working in 44.1 kHz sample rate, you can get away with some super small buffers like you've got. Makes for great near-zero latency recording and monitoring!
+Your Home Recording Studio indeed or just have a beast of a machine.. that's how i get away with it when using higher sampling rates
Hi +Flipsh0t Thanks for the great tip! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
An excellent demo of the bundle - recording music ideas should be that quick and the essence of the ideal workflow is definitely present here.
Hi +L. Scott Music I agree! Simple great sounding gear at a very affordable price!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Why am I here watching a review of a product I’ve already owned for 1.5 years? 😂
How is the mic for recording voice for music? Noise etc
I bought this exact bundle in 2014 and have found it to be excellent. I still use the CM25 for all vocals and acoustic guitars, and the same included headphones. I have only just (in 2021) upgraded to a newer interface.. the Scarlett 2i2 Gen 3
Hi Warren, recently Focusrite announced the second generation of the scarlett interfaces... can you do a review and make comparison? thank you
I have the same 2i2 I use for on the fly recording when I am not in the studio, or if I am lazy and rolling in the kitchen.
Cheers!
Hi +Stephen Tack Thanks for your insight! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Stephen Tack Yeah for real dude! Just turn that sucker down! 512 is only useable for mixing. Tracking you'll need 256 or less. 256 should do the trick for most but some drummers might want 128.
Hi+filtafacta Thanks for the insight!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Amen dude!
you are very talented man, you explained every single details of combining those sounds and it comes with a great output. I liked that :-)
Thanks Edward! I really appreciate the kind words! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren! What about bringing down your DAW's buffer size a little, you can avoid latency most of the time by doing this. Greetings!
HI +Víctor Hugo López Pérez Definitely!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Really well expained!
Was contemplating getting this pack and you sir have convinced me, thanks!
Thanks ever so much
You'r good bro! Much love from HAITI
Thanks ever so much !
Try putting the eleven on an Aux and printing???
this is how one should make a review of a product - testing it! :) best focusrite review so far. tnx man! :)
lovely, so creative:)Appreciate your guitar and bass crafty performance:)
How many classes have you taken on Guitar your so good Warren Huart
Well done, well done, even in late 2019.
Thanks ever so much!
Still awesome in 2021!
this video is really informative in that it teaches how to setup a session in pro tools and actually start working in it in a really organic way
I finished this video and was like "Jesus man wheres that subscribe button I need to hit it real quick"
Aw shucks!! Thanks ever so much my friend!!
Wow... you know you're making me buy this system and subscribe to your course as well, don't you? Music is my passion!!! Since a kid I always knew I wanted to make something from music and you're helping, even if I'm already 35. Cheers from Portugal!!
one of the best, highly recommend it
Thanks URBOIJOCKABEATS(EDM) !! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Very good review video with specific comments and tests on each device included in the package. This is a video with high value in reference.
THANK YOU!
If you get a 2i2 get the second generation its amazing and very straight forward to use
This channel is pure gold!
Hi+Antonio M Thanks very much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks
thanks ever so much!
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I purchased a Scarlett 2i2 some time ago. This video actually gave me the inspiration to set it all up and get started. My package didn't come with DAW software or mic though. This is a great starter set. I'm sincerely thankful for finding your channel here on UA-cam. Maybe, after I make my first recording, I should post for a review? Man I feel inspired!!
On Windows 10 I just plugged it in, and it sorted the drivers out for itself. Within seconds of plugging it it was working.(Ableton Live) :-)
I have this exact set and have barely touched it, largely cause my computer is ten years old and getting anything done seems to take hours of research and workarounds. In any event this is exciting to find. Thank you
Great review. You're awesome and I love your reviews!
Hi +Mat Davey Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Just picked up the 2i4 and used this video to get jump-started. Great review, nice production, and SUB'd!
Love the video, would you consider doing something like that again for the second gen of the set focusrite released?
there's v3 now
You said you are not a professional singer but your technical skill made you one hell of professional singer 😆 Nice music. So this is how we create it. Thank you !!!
You know that you sang pretty much the theme from Famous Grouse (whisky) commercial, don't you?
Nice video! =)
Haha thanks ever so much!
Fantastic review. I'm looking for gear to start a podcast and had been thinking about the 2i2 studio. You just sold it to me. Cheers.
when recording vocals do you put it on line or inst???
you put it on "line"! just to make a difference between line and instr (hi-Z) because "inst" is only for high-impedance (loud!) instruments like electric-guitars. but turning on the gain on line input blends the line to a mic input :-)
Thanks Warren ! Great to follow your teachings and comments. Everything looks simple and affordable.
Thanks ever so much!!
Wow thank you so much i will buy these
I'm so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Excellent Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 setup tutorial. Presented exceptionally well with ease of understanding. Detail explanations are superb. Not too technical, but enough to understand the controls response and how to use the controls. Job well done.
