    There are few tales of spying and espionage shrouded in as much mystery as the death of Ashraf Marwan. He was an Egyptian politician, businessman, and a spy for the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad.
    Codenamed “Angel”, Ashraf Marwan is credited by the Mossad with having saved Israel during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.
    However, both Egypt and Israel claim him as a national hero, and whether Marwan was a genuine spy for Israel, or an Egyptian patriot and double agent, is not settled.
    A peaceful passing at the end of a long life is a luxury that few spies have enjoyed, and Ashraf Marwan is no exception.
    On the 27th of June 2007, at around 1:30pm, Marwan fell from the fifth floor of his £4.4m London flat located at number 24 Carlton House Terrace. He landed in a private rose garden, succumbing to his injuries before paramedics arrived on the scene.
    Conspicuously missing from Marwan’s apartment on the day of his death was the only known manuscript of his unfinished memoirs.
    Marwan's identity as a Mossad spy was made public in a court judgment following a libel court case between two senior former Israeli officers, namely, Eli Zeira, and the former head of the Mossad itself, Zvi Zamir.
    The judgment was made public on the 14th of June 2007. Within 13 days, Ashraf Marwan was dead.
    The question remaining unanswered to this day is, “did he jump or was he pushed”?

      Egypt probably did it.
      Israel got humiliated during the War of Attrition which drained their belief in a true national victory only to be affirmed by the slugfest that was the Yom Kippur War afterwards. Add to that the embarrassment that was the War in Lebanon, and you have a concoction of embarrassments that the revelation that Marwan was a double agent working against Israel would have no effect on. Israel endured too much to care about another national mistake from a time of national mistakes to risk the backlash from Egypt(if Marwan was on Egypt's side) by assasinating somebody they didn't need to kill.
      Meanwhile, Egypt had everything to lose as the revelation that a spy infiltrating the upper echelons of Egypt, screwing the daughter of their most beloved president, while almost jeopardizing their biggest military success would be a big shock to Egypt's pride. Their recent leaders saying that Marwan wasn't a traitor would be contradicted too, which isn't good for a politicians image. Marwan was almost right the final time he warned Israel too, which is the type of info a military would probably never risk if it was going to trick another.

      The secret is probably a personal, and might cause a scandal. It appears that way since an actor, a chief of security and Angel knew about it. I guess someone who was highly thought of enjoyed the company of minors, or something of that nature. It's plausible it was a whole network. Since Angel thinks he has many enemies. There are a lot of weirdos in high society.

    Falling from London balcony's seems to be a common experience. I grew up in Kensington Johannesburg and had a friend Keith Wallace. After leaving school we went our separate ways and kept up correspondence for a while and then he disappeared. I had suspicions but that is another story as to why. Many years later, while waiting to catch a flight back to Jhb from Cape Town, bumped into someone I knew well and who also lived in the same street and was a very close friend of the Wallace family. They told me that Keith had died in London, which I already knew, but that he was killed either by British Intelligence or South African Intelligence, BOSS. They said it was speculation but that he, being a Queens scout, and very pro British (I can attest to that) and anti Apartheid, started working for the Brits but was found out and turned by BOSS. All speculation of course but I did find a report on BOSS - South African History online - which mentions the assassination of Keith. This person in Cape Town said he fell off a balcony in London. Watching your excellent documentary, with the opening words of how Marwan died brought this memory back. It may be worth your while taking a look. There may be a story in it for you.

      @@PhilipThompson Hi Philip. Thanks for your reply. If you interested in researching the story, here are a couple of facts which may help you in your research or they may be totally irrelevant. Also bear in mind that at my age the memory is not as good as it used to be. So here goes. In the 1960's Keith Wallace lived with his family in either 40 or 42 Buckingham Road Kensington. I lived a few doors up from him. His father was the chairman of the 1820 Settlers Association. I am sure Keith went to the same school as I, Jeppe Boys, but if not then it was Queens High. He had a younger brother Malcolm who followed a few years behind at Jhb Teachers Training College. There was a younger sister. Keith and I were friends. I matriculated in 1960. Not sure of the date of Keith's matriculation; it was earlier or the same year, but not later. I am not sure of this but I think Keith then worked in a bank for awhile then he moved to Southern Rhodesia and we kept in touch by letter - that dates me! - and I think he was working for a news paper or he was working in a bank but also as a reporter for a RSA newspaper (Very hazy about that!). This getting a little hazy from here on in but it might be relevant or give you a rabbit hole to follow. I remember Keith dropping by, (I was still living in Buckingham road then so it was the early 1960's), on his way to visit his parents, having come down from Rhodesia on a trip. He asked me to hold a package for him. I was wary (early 1960's in South Africa was a little scary police wise in those days). He told me it was a news report and that the police were looking for him. I wouldn't have a bar of it and told him that I wouldn't. A little later there was a news report - now again I may be way off beam here but I seem to recall that the reporter was Keith Wallace - but the report was proving that the ANC? character that the police were looking who was found bound and gagged at Zoo Lake had in fact been transported from Northern Rhodesia/Zambia by SAP vehicles. I often wondered if the package that Keith had wanted me to keep for him was in fact that news report. Anyway for what it is worth. Happy researching! 🙂

    IF a double agent, then revenge for betrayal is the stronger psychological spur. His own side. The men peering over the balcony were probably his own. He jumped - due to some other reason, most likely fear at being exposed drawing in assassination. He jumped knowing he had zero chance of evading a hit. Egyptian gentlemen dress to kill.

    Sadly, good but far to simplistic and lacking all necessary information for ininformed viewer as I wrote in an earlier commentary.
    At the Khartoum summit immediately after the 6 Day Way they decided on no recognition etc of Israel and not in about 1973 as you allude to.
    Before the Yom Kippur war tensions between Egypt & Israel were neither worse or more than the preceeding 6 months.
    The" tip off" from Marwan MUST be combined and in context to the visit (by helicopter piloted by him) of King Hussein of Jordan to meet PM Meir a short while before the war. He too informed of of the intending joint attack by Egypt & Syria. There was also intel and Israeli intelligence had spotted troop/tank movements of both countries Amazingly you fail to report that Israel crossed the Suez Canal and surrounded the Third Army. Egypt quickly agreed to a cease fire..
    Regarding preemtive strike possibility. I am surprised, again, you do not tell the whole story. The strike was considered but when discussed with Kissenger he warned Israel off by saying they must take the first blow or not be re armed/supplied by US. This is exactly what occurred.
    Finally just imagine the Germans manning the Atlantic Wall in, say, June 3 1944 had been sold by an agent in SHAEF where the allies would land and the date. I think this puts it in perspective and shows Marwan was not a double agent.

    • @jamesthegr8732
      @jamesthegr8732 10 місяців тому

      That all makes sense but why do you think despite israeli Intel, hussein of jordan warning and marwin intelligence of a joint egyptian and syrian attack, PM Meir was like "meh" it was one of the hugest embarrassment in israeli history

    • @gordonspicer
      @gordonspicer 10 місяців тому

      @@jamesthegr8732 Unless you know the full picture in the weeks leading up to the war you will come to distorted conclusions/ In this instance, I consider, your opinion grossly incorrect.
      Whilst the visit og King Hussein is not widly known and certainly NEVER ever mentionedf or discussed in Jordan or any Arab media, books on war etc for reasons you can well imagine/ Marwan details came out a few years after the Yom Kippur war with at least two books and even videos here.
      Returning to your question. The answer , again, is no secret and well known. In 1973 Israel's economy & population was alot smaller. Its manufacturing campacity was also small but growing (after the war they built their own tanks). Until the 6 day war in 1967 France had been Israel's main supplier of Jets but suddenly turned pro Arab. The US steped in for the first time to replace them and, in consequence, became reliant on them for much equipment & military aid. The US often used its huge influence on the international scene and it did it here.
      As stated there was NO question the date of the expected war was known 99%. The US despite its resources & intelligenge, apparently, missed the build up of Egyptian & Syrian forces. When Secretary of State Kissinger was informed shortly before the war of the imminent war he told Israel, in no uncertain, terms they not NOT make preemtive attacks and, in effect, accept the first heavy blows. It was made clear that IF they first attacked Arab forces US would not, if required, make up any munition & other losses.
      Mrs G. Meir & her Cabinet/Advisors had a terrible decision to make but no choice in view of the country knowing the serious threats and not having sufficient reserve war material for an itensive war on two fronts from very substantial prepared forces. In fact after the Russians began to resupply the Arabs the US joined in (with no thanks or cooperation from NATO !) with Operation Nickle Grass which the Israelis were most grateful.
      As an aside in modern warfare now armies consume enormous amount of munitions & equipment very quickly. See Ukraine
      as an example and even Nato stocks are now reported to be very low!
      Israel is reported to have learnt lessons but multi front wars still pfresent problems. Some lessons . US keeps war reserves in Israel for joint use. Israel has massive reserve stocks and the biggest modern tank fleet in Europe. Access to the front improved by wide fast roads. The only comprehensive layered anti missile screne in western world. Improved ability to call marge trained reserves within 24 hours (far faster than anything known in NATO). I won't go on except Mrs Meir was a competent, diligent Prime Minister, who faced no choice

    Wasnt the corrective reforms actually what Hafez Al Assad did in the 1970s following the oup that brought the Alawites into power to make them look more Islamic to the Sunnis on the country?
    Anyways Sadat was a mixed bag oeace with Israel, opening to the us and Saudi Arabia , and cracking down on leftists and Nasserites on the one hand, while on the other hand egypt allowed returning Egyptians influenced by Salafism from Saudi Arabia and athe Gulf to fund Salafi mosques (despite Egypt historically being influenced by Sufi Islam), released the Muslim Brotherhood/Ikwan prisoners, increased Coptic persecution, allowed dawa conversion acitivity on egyptian campuses, the call to pray five times a day on Egyptian radio and tv, the rise of jhadi groups like the Takfir Wal Hirja, Gama Al Islamayaa , and the Islamic Liberation Originzation and as well as ammendments to the constitution that implemented sharia law as a sole source, etc.
