Well it doesn't stand for Extra Large, but these cameras do work a little differently than other Super 8 cameras. Let's find out why XL Super 8 cameras might just be some of the more popular and preferred kinds out there.

    I’ve been shooting with a Minolta XL601 since 2013 and honestly never knew what the XL stood for. I have a stack of cartridges I’ve shot since then and I’m just now starting to get them processed and scanned. Sending the first cartridge I ever shot out to Pro8mm tomorrow. Solid video, man! XL is the combination of a wide shutter angle + a high speed lens. Most XL cameras have a f/1.4 or f/1.2 lens. Having a 220 degrees shutter angle with a f/2.8 lens wouldn't make it an XL. I think the Minolta 601 is on the edge of being an XL camera with its f/1.7 lens. It's a full stop slower than the 401 which has a f/1.2 lens.

    When growing up my family had the Kodak XL33 that was bought in 1972, but as years passed from not using it since 1983. In 1994 when i tried it out, it didnt work. Comes to find out Kodak used cheap plastic gears that eventually turn to goo after a few years.. but thanks to other family members giving me cameras in the late 90s and early 00s. I have a few in my collection. Nothing fancy. A few bell and howell xl20 and a Chinon from the early 1980s that my late uncle gave me before he passed. I enjoy using my super 8 for taking family get togethers. Its been a few years since i shot anything. So i just ordered the new Ektachrome to try out. But i do miss the Kodachome 40.

    I own the Canon Auto Zoom 814XL. It produces pretty decent results but an issue I have with it is when shooting on 24 FPS, which is the only FPS I use, it runs the batteries down fairly quickly and since the compartment screw is worn down it’s a total bitch trying open it up. • @AnalogResurgence
      @AnalogResurgence  5 років тому

      The extension tubes would increase your focal length if the zoom isn’t enough for you, but they might cut down on the light that’s getting to the film meaning the camera will have to compensate by opening the aperture up more meaning you would lose depth of field so your focus would be shallower. I’m not sure exactly what the impact of exposure would be but I know for example on a 16mm Bolex extension tubes will impact the exposure.

    Perhaps an ND filter can compensate for the excess of light?

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6
      @KRAFTWERK2K6 2 роки тому

      yes it can. Some super 8 cameras even had a built in ND filter that could be flipped in and out. Like the Revue Cockpit S 8 RM for example. But for most cameras you'd need one that fits the screwmount of the lens. But yea, that is definitely a good way to compensate.

    Hi men I have a question. I own a Canon Auto Zoom 518 (8mm). And I used it once, i used a 50D Vision but I have an issue. After recieving my digital footage I found out that like 2/3 of my footage is overexposed. 1/3 of the usable footage looks pretty good but the other 2/3 is just white (I was recording on a very sunny day). Does this mean that 50D is not good enough for these heavy sunny days or do you think it has to do something with my super 8 camera? I need your help. Thanks.

    • @AnalogResurgence
      @AnalogResurgence  3 роки тому

      50D is great for bright outdoors, so it may be something with your camera but it's very hard for me to know based on the description. It would be best to maybe contact the lab that developed the film and see if they can help you determine what is wrong.

  • @SteveInSunnyCA

    Thank you for your informative camera reviews. Please add a tear down of a Kodak XL movie camera, right down to the iris blades. I must correct you on one comment, that “Kodak had its own format”. It’s format was Super 8, the format created by Kodak, and universally used, except by one Japanese company which used a non-standard cassette but nevertheless conformed to the Super 8 image size, 8mm film width, and perforation size and location, so that it could be shown in the standard Super 8 projector.

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6
      @KRAFTWERK2K6 2 роки тому

      yes the Japanese used Single 8 and personally i find it sad that it did not become the more common outside Japan because Single 8 was definitely WAY better with its pressure plate inside the camera. Something that really made shooting on Super 8 a bit of a hit or miss with jittering.

    Dude! I did not know about this XL thing!
    And I just ordered a Minolta XL-601 today!
    I plan on shooting outside on daylight with 50D mostly, and I wonder if there would be too much overexposure? Since the camera is already calibrated to lower iso (like it's set to 25 instead of 50 when using a 50D!+and it'll shoot 160iso when using 200T- so already overexposed). Now add the XL shutter thing...and I sure hope the image won't come out blown out. I know film loves overexposure, but I live in a harshly sunny place. I would have to use an ND filter for sure...

    • @AnalogResurgence
      @AnalogResurgence  5 років тому +1

      You could try some ND’s on it if you think it might be too bright for sure! I recently shot some 50D on a 401 which is very very similar to the 601 and the camera did a great job with it.

    • @eladbari
      @eladbari 5 років тому +1

      @@AnalogResurgence Hey :) Well, I also have a Canon 518SV, and when placing a 50D cartidge inside and aiming/metering outside- the f-stop needle is stuck to the extreme edge of the f/32 side. So I figured in that case- i'd have to take it back to a safe zone below that. That's why I got a x4 ND filter. Although I guess consumers in the 60's weren't so aware of exposure, and they still got usable footage :)
      So, I guess this format is forgiving.

      And these expensive models like the Beaulieu series (especially the 2008 and 4008 series) require basically being maintained every year. So even if you get such a camera for a good price, it most likely will be in bad need of maintenance which can make the final price go well over 1000 bucks for all the service costs.... and then we are are getting into 16mm camera price-regions.

    • @AnalogResurgence
      @AnalogResurgence  4 роки тому +1

      Well the purpose of XL cameras is to let more light in when shooting. So using higher framerates on an XL camera still allows for more light because of the larger shutter angle in comparison to higher framerates with non-XL cameras.

    • @giacintoboccia9386

      Sadly I don’t see that happening. It’s been out of production for around 25 years and because Super 8 is such a smaller market than it was 30-50 years ago, it’s just not likely something that Kodak especially would invest the time and resources to bring back. Likely Super 8 will remain the way it is for the rest of its lifespan, a silent film stock.

    • @cubdukat

      Not a chance. The closest you will probably ever get to the old mag strip is the new setup Kodak has in the new camera (which is probably never coming). The camera's already got a crystal-synced motor and an SD card slot for sound. You just have to sync it up in editing. But no, the mag strip's gone for good.
