Thanks so much!! I was just talking about how expensive 35mm is in the discord today too lol (it's not an everyday medium, but man a glass of Johnny Walker Blue Label is amazing every once in a while, ya know???)
You know those vacuum-sealed bags where you can put all your winter clothes, a comforter, and two pillows and it'll all get compressed down to the size of a textbook? Your explainer videos are vacuum-sealed. So much amazing knowledge presented in an easy-to-digest way, packed into a video that is somehow less than 30 minutes long.
In the 90s we had photography class in middle school with photo development the film loading and pictures with the black room projector red light it was fun and is becoming a lost art .
Very well done. I laughed when you shook that camera and it rattled. I started shooting film back in the 50's and am still doing it today except now I do my own developing. Also thanks for the background music link. Happy shooting!
I just picked up a Canon 512 XL and am soooo stocked to get to shooting !! This video was a huge help in getting another overwiev and so well edited, loved every second ! :)
Really helpful video, thank you so much! Learned so much, and love how you go into detail about everything - including codecs, didn't realize how bad h246 treats 8mm footage! Excited to film my first roll of 8mm, once it arrives in the mail. Thanks a ton! :)
I love super 8 because my dad has tons of projectors and the best cameras like the Fujica zc1000 Canon 1014xls Nikon r10, and a ton of preserved film stock like even Ecktachrome 160 sound I love shooting it because I can do lap exposures and double expose and do fade in and fade outs which look amazing on super 8 the only thing that’s made me sad in the past years is the increasing price is film stock
Just picked up a super 8 camera. Bought some film off of offer up. It’s on a spool, not in a cartridge, am I supposed to pick up the cartridge separately?
Damn dude the amount of info in this video is just bananas! That entry price is a bit too steep for me, I think though. But you forgot the part where you test out putting crackers in the camera. Super Ate.
Could you tell me the time stamps of certain shots that were taken with each of the different types of film? 50D 200T and 500T, any shots in daylight or night. I just want a visual reference for what I should expect from each film type
I want to shoot 50D outside. Should I switch the button so I can see the sun symbol or should I switch the button so I can see the red light bulb? I am confused and I don't want to ruin my first Super 8 film.
Vision3 50D is a daylight film. When shooting it in sunlight, the daylight filter in your camera should be off, showing the light bulb symbol. When Super8 was mainstream, all films were tungsten balanced. For this kind of film, an orange daylight filter is built in most Super8 cameras.
I thought you were literally going to film the exact same way the movie Super8 did or something, so I was so confused when I realized there was a camera ACTUALLY named Super 8😂
I've had my camera away for years now because I shot an entire roll only to find that the clutch on the reel drive thing wasn't strong enough, so it didn't spin the reel and the sprocket puller just ripped a hole between two sprocket holes. I exposed the same frame of film the entire time. I have no idea where to get something like that fixed.
Noooooooo, sorry to hear that. You might want to reach out to pro8mm and see if they can service it. They refurb old cameras, so maybe they could fix yours? They might charge you an arm and a leg though lol
Only thing that is annoying when people use super 8 and then upload it. Is they always show the perfs on the left. Why do this? Is it just to boast that your using film and not a filter.
Oh, no-no-no-no, nooo, you dragged me into instant photography, you won't force me to go bankrupt yet again! Nice try. Although... it _is_ a cool-looking footage. Perha... nooo-no-no. No.
I recently traded emails with pro8mm. It was hilarious - they want $5 PER GIGABYTE for download delivery. Their address has 5Gbe upload speed fiber for $180/month. That works out to like $6,000,000 per month at their billing rate, lol.
@@SweetLouPhotography I had some negatives get lost a while back and ever since then I've been paranoid. These days I prefer digital delivery, far safer in my opinion, especially when considering the costs involved. There really is no excuse in this day and age with cheap high-speed fiber available. They just haven't updated their policy in forever. I even called it out and pointed them to the ISP where they can get 5 gigabit fiber for cheap, 😂
@@jw48335 I suspect the cost incurred is related to paying for cloud storage space rather than the cost of the bandwidth used. Still way overpriced but makes much more sense.
@@JacobCarlson You can build an 8 x 12 TB Synology array for under $2K for on-premises storage. Cloud storage is dirt cheap now too. If Duane's photo and Nice film lab can give me free downloads for my huge tif file packages, so should Pro8mm. I also asked them about upload directly to my Google drive - it would have not required any storage on their side - the price was STILL going to be $5 a gigabyte. They're just not interested in evolving their processes.
You’ve managed to find the only medium more expensive than still film photography. Footage looks fantastic though - I’m definitely Team Sprocket!

Good tip on the mov uploads! I have to use them for my photography videos too, for the same reason.
Thanks!! Yeah, I know video compression is a really sexy topic to discuss on yt lol
Really enjoy the creativity and visual aesthetic (yeah i said that) of your videos. Great job.

I just purchased my first super 8 camera for £20. Excited to get started
best of luck on the journey!!
How about an 8mm proyector video? Which one do you recommend, etc.
Excellent video, been wanting to get into 8 and super 8! Authentic Aesthetic Ref :) Excellent information! The look is priceless!
ONLY 90S KIDS!!! Thanks so much for watching, glad you dig it :)

At pro8mm website, when you choose your playback speed at processing, which one do you pick: 18fps or 24fps?
Excellent video. I got Canon 514XL-s a few months ago. I will be testing out this camera for the first time in a few weeks.
Wooooo, good luck!!
Love how you put this together! Great watch, great info 👏
Thanks so much for watching!!
great video! thanks!!!!

Amazing video !!! Thank you
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to dumb things down for a beginner too :)
So you don’t need to develop reversal film?
You need to develop any film, otherwise it would be burned
Is that Pat Scola holding the stills camera towards the end of this video?!
This is awesome I really wanna try it out one day
Also rip authentic aesthetic 😔
you should!!
If you're planning on uploading 8mm, upload it in 4K to deal with UA-cam's shitty compression. Also, 15-30 seconds is enough for a frame.
This is so helpful.
Glad you dig it!! :)

as instagram moves more into video content.. think of movie film as an investment.
@@knoptop Imagine the quality of the video content though if there was Super 8 level investment required in every Reel.

Pro8mm prices are insane: $700 for a Canon 310XL, $900 for a Canon 514XL. As if a CLA for such simple cameras is worth $600
Yeah it's pretty wild. I found my Canon 514XL on ebay for like 50 bucks iirc
