    Hey Buddy I have the solution. I have the 50 amp version and installed. I added a pig tail (50 amp to each end of the south wire, with polarity /in and out in mind.) . Where the power comes ( from the camp ground plug inside the rv before the transfer switch ) in I put a 50 amp female plug attached to the wall. Coming from the transfer switch to the in power plug I attached a male (dead end) on a cord That can be plugged in to the post power in. I added the male plug 50 amp to the surge guard in ( flexible, like the power cord) and added a female 50 amp to the surge guard out end. Get a 10 foot 50 amp cord like the one from the camp plug and the plugs mentioned. Keep them the exact same. The male of the sg in goes to the fm of the rv power in from pedestal . Plug the surge guard (out) fm male to the male plug going to the transfer switch in power. Make all these connection when the power is off at the pedestal and unplugged !!!!!!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ . If the surge guard fails turn off the pedistal and un plug!!!! Unplug both ends of the surge guard and plug in the 2 remaining plugs male/Female and the surge guard is eliminated. It works perfect. Label them A,B,C,D. And label them for quick reference and the cheat sheet / schematic next to it. Remember use the same wire size as the wire coming to the rv. So buy a short flexible rv cable extension( 3 or 4 prong) NOT a IN DOOR wire. Have fun and write down what you are doing to keep it straight. 😉

      I like the thought you put into this. You have me thinking really hard about other options. Ihave the same surge guard in the pedestal version and with your reference above, I think I can wire in a female plug inside the RV, plug in the portable version, then wire the RV with a plug to the Portable SG. This keeps the SG inside at all times and is able to be replaced or bypassed easily. Thanks for the idea.

    I have a 2012 forest river salem just got it few months ago I finally have it hooked up to a utility poke an city water but I'm not sure of my hot water heater is there away to see if it can run just off electrical instead of propane at this time

    • @HowToRV
      @HowToRV  2 роки тому

      I have ran this scenerio before. I turned off the propane so that i knew without a doubt that it will not be heating up the water and then see if the electric side makes or keeps the water hot. It is easier to start when water has not been heated up yet, like when you first get to the campground.

    I guess basically a transfer switch or put a plug on each end of the unit but also if you are competent enough to install it you should be fine to bypass it in like 2 minutes

    • @HowToRV

      well said and I agree on the bypass.

    I have been considering hard wiring ours in as well I just haven't done it yet. Great video buddy

      I love the fact that I do not have to worry about a portable solution. I am going to keep the portable one with me for a while to make sure that the hardwired solution fails.

    Hey Jason nice video. We have the same unit installed in our fifthwheel in the 50a . My work around in case of failure is this. I have a transfer switch installed with a 30a cord that plugs into my generator. Should the surge protector fail I could just unplug from The generator and plug into shore power. Of course I would be stepping down to 30a but I would have power until I got the surge protector replaced. By the way it has saved our coach several times In the past year and still works great.
    Safe travels maybe we will see you at the next meet up.

      I like this method for someone who has the option to do so. What would you do if the generator was not an option?

      Its a piece of mind. Safety and reliabiliy is very important. In this case, I get security, safety and it provides an easier experience. All wins in my opinion.

    does it work with a generator

    • @HowToRV
      @HowToRV  2 роки тому

      It does. I have used that portable one with the generator before and this one is basically the same but hard wired.

    Very good info and points Jason… I also think it’s important for people to look at Joules ratings since that’s a good indicator of design differences between 1 surge protector and another. Southwire has great Joule ratings, much better actually than some other “popular” companies and I don’t think enough people understand all surge protectors are not created equal.

    • @HowToRV
      @HowToRV  2 роки тому +1

      You are absolutely right. Not all surge protectors are created equal. The design and engineering vs. cost of manufacturing determine the price point. I guess in this sense, you get what you pay for. Safety and security is something that I think all should invest in the most.

    Plug your portable surge protector in. Plug the trailer into it. You might kill the first one but it will save the second one.

    • @HowToRV
      @HowToRV  2 роки тому

      Not a bad thought at all. I never looked at it that way.

      @@HowToRV ... it doesn't solve the problem where the device just randomly dies, but that's far less likely than a surge killing it...
