3:43 AND which includes disconnecting the battery! Take off the neg the (-) NOT the red, first, or then both. Dont let them touch anything along the way. Wires or the posts themselves.
great video too, by the way. Just got to finish it! Now, thanks a whole lot to you, yeah, thanks a whole lot. Now, I'm going to try it. So, thanks a whole heck of a lot.
Lot better job than any dealer would have done. Nice work Mike. Its funny my wife and I just got back from camping and you video made me go out and make sure I didn't forget my surge protector this morning. I got it .Thanks.. LOL
Superb video. I appeciate how you showed the ACTUAL installation (other "install" videos I watched didn't show the INSTALL). I also appreciate how you showed the discovery and problem solving process, for running the monitor wiring. I found a youtube video, where the guy made a custom front bracket/panel, to actually install that monitor truly flush-mounted. Details were in the comments section. I'll add it here, later. Thanks again.
Wandering Wagners I just finished my install. I watched your video 3 times in advance to make sure I was ready. HAHA But it was so helpful watching during the install. Thanks again! It was successful and now I can kick back knowing the RV is well protected!
Excellent video. I'm going to be doing the same thing with our motor home but luckily, my power panel is directly above the compartment where the transfer switch is located and it will be an easy install for the remote monitor. We had the Progressive unit in our fifth wheel and let it go when we sold it. They do work great and offer the protection that we need.
I just installed the exact same surge protector in our Jayco this last Saturday. I got to install it in the back of a kitchen cabinet where I could only get one arm into it. I wish I would have had more slack on my 50A cable. It took some doing (and a few cuss words) but I got it done. I am extremely happy with the finished product. Nice job on routing that wire to the other side of your trailer!!
Good job and nice installation. What I dislike about the monitor is the brightness of the LED so I installed it on the back wall of the wardrobe. I didn't think it was something I needed to see all the time anyway. The hardest part about the installation was just reaching the line cord J box - a tight fit for this pudgy old guy.😊
Good job Mike hardwired unit is the only way to go. I would not like to have to plug The portable one into the pedestal and leave it in the weather every time you plug your trailer in. at least you didn’t have to pull the Cummings turbo diesel stove out. LOL.
Yeah we prefer hard wired. More work upfront but no one will steal it and I can monitor it easily. Haha we wondered if anyone noticed our Cummins oven😉
Hi Mike. I'm a new subscriber. I found you while I was doing a search for this very install. I just this evening ordered the EMS-HW50C from Amazon... supposed to receive it tomorrow! Great video. I appreciate your explanation as you go through. You've given me a higher level of confidence for this install! Thanks. Safe travels. bg
Hey I just installed this Saturday on my 2018 rockwood 2706ws. 50 amp model as well. Working with the 6 GA wire is a real bear. I'm having a minor issue with my unit. Either the data cable, display head or logic board is bad because I'm getting no read out from the display head. Customer service is first notch as they are sending me out replacement parts today. Love the piece of mind of the hard wired surge protector!
Nice install. We are hoping to downsize to a Classic 30' and need to install same. Not to hard but wow great they made nice chases for wire pulling. I have a 5th wheel now and installed the same and really hate the satellite box control plug too...why can't it be on back or at least have the ability for move it. Thanks great video. How long did it take total.
Great job on the installation. Looks like Airstream installed a WFCO load center and converter. WFCO converters have a spotty reputation, prone to overcharging the “house” batteries. It did exactly that to our “house” batteries. I replaced our WFCO converter with one from Progressive Dynamics. No more battery charging problems. You might consider replacing the OEM converter with one made by Progressive Dynamics.
The 2018 models are supposed to have updated converters that won't overcharge the batteries. But if it would fail we will definitely upgrade to the progressive and you'll probably see a video of that install of that happens haha
One caveat about your soft start for the AC’s. Your AS is brand new, yes? If you install the soft start, it will void your AC warranty. We learned that at an AS owners’ clinic.
It depends on your warranty for your specific air conditioner. If you do a poor install and it ends up damaging other things then yes it'll void it. If not, it might not void it. If you ask they will always tell you it will void it even if it wouldn't. No everyone does clean installs, and they don't like the risk. However if they don't know, they won't know😉
Nice Video... Yes,,, you are a brave one to invade a brand new unit... Just a thought,,, would a modification like this one null & void any Airstream Warrenties ??? Or what they don't know won't hurt them ???
Wandering Wagners,,, Thanks for your reply... But you are dealing with Thor now, not "Air Stream", and they would be knit pickie... " Air Streams " Rock !!!
I saw the old fashioned kind of water heater. I wonder why RV makers, especially high dollar Airstream still uses those and not Truma or Alde for heat.
before you install that EasyStart can you do generator test, and see how it performs with starting and running AC and different things at same time, I have been looking at EasyStart for couple years now, it has gone down in price
How's that gonna work with the Predator generator? You'll have to use the buddy plug to get power, right? Whereas before you could just not plug in the surge protector.
I have a problem with this product there is no ventilation for the heat that the contactor will produce while energized and it is energized 24/7 while power is hooked up that humming you here is the coil pulled in And the humming will increase the older it gets and depending on the load those contacts on the contactor will eventually start to chatter from pitting The contacts on the contactor are made up with a nickel cadmium on them that is malleable
Your like MacGyer aren’t you afraid of voiding your warranty?? Also what about resale value doing after market modifications.. keep the videos coming safe travels!!! Shorefoot
No we're not really worried about warranties in general but something like this adds to the value. Not like we're painting the interior and laying carpet down and really changing anything that might affect resale.
That monitor is the reason I went with a hardwired Surge Guard brand protector. Nice job routing those wires. Progressive is definately highly recommended in the RV community. I Ike the hardwired units. Just plug the coach in an outlet. No worries about theft or forgetting it. Thumbs up
Sweet!! I think I'll look into the 30 amp for mine. I have the pedestal type, but, you're right, I worry about getting it stolen, PLUS, it's "water resistant," but not completely water proof, so I end up wrapping a garbage bag around it! Nice job with the installation!
We installed a 30 amp on our Jayco and it was a really easy install. In our opinion it's better to hardware it than for it to get damaged or stolen in a matter of seconds. Thanks for watching!
Great ideas and great job, Mike! Like you said, once it is done, it is certainly worth the effort! That’s one thing not on my to-do list! Maybe one of these days if I find the energy.
Was impressed with the installations and great information! I do a lot of electrical side work , do have electrical background? You handled all the electrical excellence!
Nope, no electrical background. I've been a truck driver my whole adult life but I've always had an interest in construction, plumbing, and electrical. Thanks for the comment!
I installed the 30 amp version just to get the display inside where it will actually be useful. It's not very accurate as I've had it register more than 30 amps without any of the breakers opening.
Ours, like many motorhomes, came with a "Surge Guard" surge protector wired in the system. I still use a Progressive Industries Portable 50 Amp RV Surge Protector. Why? 1. I can plug it in to check power source without pulling out cord. 2. I was told by a service tech that most built in ones have a 1 shot protection. If it blows, it needs replaced. That's expensive. I have cable lock to wrap the post for theft protector.
Most? That means they make better ones? I had, had, an good one. Now, where is it? Jerk steal it? Knuckleheaded me forget it? Who knows. My old head needs built in kind.
We have never had an incident occur where the surge protector got damaged or tripped and stopped working. We just prefer the indoor monitor and it can't be lost or stolen.
Micro-Air is at it again. They've invented the EasyTouch RV, a new thermostat control for A/C with WiFi and Bluetooth capacity to be released this Spring. See their Facebook for more information and a new product announcement --and also RV Electricity on FB. It's for the aftermarket. EasyStart is not their only RV product anymore.
I'm with Jim. But if I was actually there, seeing how things are laid out in the Airstream, I MAY (and I may not) have figured it out, too. In my opinion, where you put it is a perfect location. Just not sure I would have had the confidence to try it.
Nice work, the only suggestion I have would be to cut the power supply cable so that the ground wire is long enough to touch the feed wire into the main panel, then put a duplex lug on both ground wires. That way they would be secured to each other so they can't come loose if the trailer shakes.
That wiring mess behind the panel is bothering considering that an Airstream is a high end motor home... I have seen less known motor home makers who have cleaner wiring even inplaces that are not seen! How disappointing. I think I when I go purchase an Airstream I will demand they unscrew some panels so I will have a good look “behind the scenes and if they are below par I will ask them to clean it up before I will pay a lot of money for it.
It was really messy in the Jayco we had before the airstream! Much worse. They probably don't expect to have anyone in that area of the trailer. Most people never would be.
3:43 AND which includes disconnecting the battery! Take off the neg the (-) NOT the red, first, or then both. Dont let them touch anything along the way. Wires or the posts themselves.
Your step by step install was very helpful for my install! Thanks!!!
Very welcome!
Great Job 👍
Thank you!
Great job! 👍
Thanks!
Fearless! Great job thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you..I have one ready to install... I will also be incorporating a Hughes Autoformer
Great! Good luck on your install
great video too, by the way. Just got to finish it! Now, thanks a whole lot to you, yeah, thanks a whole lot. Now, I'm going to try it. So, thanks a whole heck of a lot.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching
I did install my 30amp protector last year without problem. Thanks again for ypur video. Now, I'm reminded that my home isn't grounded properly. Lol
Lot better job than any dealer would have done. Nice work Mike. Its funny my wife and I just got back from camping and you video made me go out and make sure I didn't forget my surge protector this morning. I got it .Thanks.. LOL
Haha glad I could help you with a peer check😉
You did a really, really nice job, nothing embarrassing looking!
Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you found it helpful
Here is the UA-cam link. Need to view the comments. ua-cam.com/video/Ckkbv3L91Gk/v-deo.html
Beautiful job!
Thank you!
Impressive. You are so smart!
Thanks! I try😂
Great install and easy to follow. Thanks much!
Glad you found it helpful!
Wandering Wagners I just finished my install. I watched your video 3 times in advance to make sure I was ready. HAHA But it was so helpful watching during the install. Thanks again! It was successful and now I can kick back knowing the RV is well protected!
Haha perfect😁 glad you got it finished!
I’m impressed! You’re an inspiration to get same thing done for my new Grand Design!
You can do it!
Thank you, glad it helped you. We've always had good luck with progressive!
Hi, one question so that goes between the transfer switch and fuse/breaker panel? Thanks in advance
Looks like a professional install! Very nice job!
Thank you!
I just installed the exact same surge protector in our Jayco this last Saturday. I got to install it in the back of a kitchen cabinet where I could only get one arm into it. Job well done....
Thank you!
First video I’ve watched of yours and you gained a subscriber. Excellent video sir!
Thanks for watching and for the subscribe🙌🏻
Very nice job Mike. I've got the 30 amp version in my cart.
Thanks! I've installed a 30 and a 50 amp now on different trailers haha
Yeah, but in the kitchen with the other monitors it blends in and we don't notice it at night
Another well documented video. Thanks Mike.
Thanks for watching!
Another great video. I learn more and more as I watch your videos! Can’t wait until you tackle the air conditioner!
Thanks! That video will be up sometime soon
Mike. Nice job...Doing mine this week. Thanks for taking the time...its appreciated. Paul
Glad you found it helpful
Will this work when reducing 50amp to 30amp with a dog bone at the post?
Yes
Very good work.
Thank you!
Good job Mike hardwired unit is the only way to go. I would not like to have to plug The portable one into the pedestal and leave it in the weather every time you plug your trailer in. at least you didn’t have to pull the Cummings turbo diesel stove out. LOL.

Wait WHUT?
@11:14
Very nice.... Just picked up our Airstream 30 International ready to try this project. Great Job !
That's awesome, enjoy your international! Good luck👍🏻
Very nice install. You did a great job of making look as if it came that way from the factory!
Thanks that is what I was going for haha
Great video! Sweet install.
Thanks! I'm glad it's finished haha
Hi Mike. I'm a new subscriber. I found you while I was doing a search for this very install. I just this evening ordered the EMS-HW50C from Amazon... supposed to receive it tomorrow! Great video. That's great and thanks for subscribing! Feel free to ask any questions you might have👍
You can paint the wire black so it is just a little more inconspicuous. BTW, nice job!
Thanks!
Wow, awesome job, I'll be using many of your suggestions. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Hey I just installed this Saturday on my 2018 rockwood 2706ws. 50 amp model as well. Working with the 6 GA wire is a real bear. I'm having a minor issue with my unit. Glad to hear they have good customer service! Luckily we've never had to contact them.
Would of been nice if it had a wireless monitor!
True but the install is finished now and it looks good even with all the hassle of the install
Total a couple hours but making a video slows you down a little. Thanks for watching!
Great mod. thanks for sharing. i might just tackle the install myself because of your great tutorial!
That's great to hear! You can do it and just send us a message if you have any questions
Fun to watch
Thank you☺️
Nice job and great video. Thanks for that!
Thanks for watching!
Great job on the installation.

Haha that sounds tempting

Could go either way probably. They probably wouldn't know it's there but I'm sure it could void it if they wanted to be picky.
Wandering Wagners,,, Thanks for your reply... But you are dealing with Thor now, not "Air Stream", and they would be knit pickie... " Air Streams " Rock !!!
So if you only have a 30amp service and have to use an adapter for your 50 amp cord, what does the monitor say?
The monitor doesn't know the difference, it tells you the voltage being applied and the amps being used.
Hopefully whoever bought your Jayco knows..... that is a nice upgrade I kinda do that figure out as I go thing...works most of the time LOL
It hasn't failed me yet to just figure it out as I go haha
I saw the old fashioned kind of water heater. I wonder why RV makers, especially high dollar Airstream still uses those and not Truma or Alde for heat.
Airstream does use alde in the higher class models, just not in the flying clouds. We preferred the old style personally.
before you install that EasyStart can you do generator test, and see how it performs with starting and running AC and different things at same time, I have been looking at EasyStart for couple years now, it has gone down in price
Yeah we will do a test

Handy Man ... awesome job!
Thank you! It was a challenge at times but glad it's done
I saw 2 videos today from you and your wife both are more informative than any other channel on UA-cam. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! We really appreciate that
Fiddly job but great outcome.
Thanks for watching!

We liked the hardwire unit we put in the Jayco and decided to do it again with the airstream. Now that it's done we don't have to think about it!

Nice job Mike. Damn professional looking install if I don't say so!
Thanks! It did turn out pretty nice

I would just install it near the breaker box and not care about routing it all the way across.
jim a I was thinking the same thing. But then I always take the easy route.....
I preferred it this way... Besides what's life without a little challenge haha
I'm with Jim. But if I was actually there, seeing how things are laid out in the Airstream, I MAY (and I may not) have figured it out, too. In my opinion, where you put it is a perfect location. Just not sure I would have had the confidence to try it.
There goes the warranty 😀
The warranty is a Joke anyways!!!
We aren't known for keeping warranties anyhow haha
Nice work, the only suggestion I have would be to cut the power supply cable so that the ground wire is long enough to touch the feed wire into the main panel, then put a duplex lug on both ground wires. That way they would be secured to each other so they can't come loose if the trailer shakes.
