    Thanks Tom and Wassym. Hearing Wassym talk about the hidden costs of relying on 3rd parties for software was spot on. I love the release cadence Rivian is on. I also get a bit tired all the requests for Apple Carplay. We own a R1S, Tesla Model Y and I previously had the Polestar 2. The biggest thing I miss/want with Rivian software is the following:
    1. Ability to use other mapping software. As someone living in a large city with kids' events scattered all over, I use navigation all the time not just for directions, but for best routes based on traffic. Rivian Nav has let me down many times. Loved Polestar in this regard to showing turn by turn in car binnacle and overview on center display. With option for Google or Apple maps.
    2. More coverage area for Driver Plus.
    3. Better responsiveness for PaaK (phone as a key)
    4. I echo Tom's request for charging curve and more fool proof option for phantom drain. I have helped several friends to go EV (Rivian and others) and its always a bit hard to explain all of that to people who don't follow all of this closely.

      Hey @john-sea I am not sure you are aware but Rivian did purchase ABRP (A Better Route Planner) so hopefully that will be very helpful - not sure of implementation timeline though

    • @chuckm260
      @chuckm260 Рік тому +2

      @@Dr_Flankensteinn - Yep, but Rivian has yet to fully leverage the ABRP code yet. Simple waypoints are still not yet possible which is really annoying, to the point I have to run other nav systems on my phone and tablet on road trips. Just another area, besides the phantom drain issue, I'd like to see Rivian spend some serious time on.

      One thing I'd like to commend Rivian for software-wise outside of the improvements to physical components (which is amazing in its own right) is their ability to provide lots of information in a clean and easy to read UI. It sounds simple, but it's a difficult balance. The biggest software companies in the world (Google, Amazon, etc) are very good at this, while Tesla is the master at it in the automotive industry.

    This is cool as heck. Thank you for doing this interview and sharing this Tom. I've been a software professional my entire career and seeing software development become a core in-house competency of automotive has been very exciting. Wassym said it right, a third-party software supplier just doesn't have the same sense of urgency or aligned incentives to get things done when needed.

      I feel like resource head room could be addressed by making the head unit swappable (ideally with the obsolete head unit being recycled). I realize the processing requirements for some of this are quite high so it's not like the head unit itself can do it all, but it could keep responsiveness smooth as the infotainment UI is advanced beyond the CPU or memory of the original head unit.

    Tom, great interview! To be fair, and Wassym touched on it. If the R1 had a less capable suspension, as the R2 may, these changes would not be possible to adjust dampening, etc. So the air and hydraulic suspension allow these changes. The R1 is a great platform from the start, albeit a very expensive one to build. I'm looking forward to trying the new software for towing our camper. Our first time towing, the R1T stated 624 miles of range...lol

To Wassym: Is there more features Alexa Auto you are planning. Is the text messaging management/notification on the horizon soon. Will the accent lights in the doors and dash have permanent RGB control. Lastly will there be a better music app for the phone that allow browsing, searching, choosing playlist from the center screen and not from the phone itself? Keep up the great work.

    That was a great get Tom to have Wassym on. Thanks so much. Couple questions to ask him would be 1. When is the accent lighting going to be able to be adjusted by the owner to have whatever color they choose? We had orange for Halloween last year and green for Halloween this year. 2. How far are they into integrating the ABRP software into their software stack and what features are to come that will enhance the trip planning-charging experience? 3. What is the path and timing on the amount of new highways-roads they will incorporate into their Driver+ software to again enhance that feature? Thanks again for a great interview and update. Great to see more updates are coming and can't wait to try it out with my R1S.
    Here are my requests I would like to see in future updates:
    - Need entertainment apps (UA-cam, Netflix, Game, etc...) this will help us kill the time while waiting at the charge station
    - Ability to adjust steering wheel (normal, sport, etc) and acceleration paddle (even I am used to one paddle driving as a Tesla owner, Rivian paddle felt heavy especially on high regen)
    - Surround view camera is great however I feel the resolution can be improved
    - This is probably the most important one for me is the air suspension sound. It gets a bit loud when the height mode changes.

    @State Of Charge - Great interview and video, Tom. Thank you for bringing up the vampire drain issue. I just watched 3 videos about Rivian's 38.0 OTA update and there was no mention of there was a 35% improvement in that area. Even Rivian's video did not mention it. I didn't know of the idea of putting the R1 into Shipping mode to reduce some of the vampire drain. I can't help but wonder when using Shipping mode when vehicle will be subject to cold temperatures as I'm pretty sure the vehicle helps keep the battery warm when it's just sitting there in the cold. And what other possible side affects from using Shipping mode, e.g. does it take longer for vehicle start up?
    I look forward to the day Rivian can reduce the vampire drain to where it is a non-issue.

  • @ronb4633
    @ronb4633 Рік тому +3

    Thanks for the interview, it was quite interesting. I would say one statement that sounded a little ground was Rivian‘s ability to change most anything with software. I have been in S/W development for over 35 years and I can say that the SW can only change what the hardware supports. I believe it is clear that Rivian undersized the compressor for the air suspension and the cooling system for the battery. I believe neither of those problems that occur because of that have been able to be addressed with software updates. They can, of course, alleviate them, or restrict the usage of how often you can change the suspension height but that is merely a Band-Aid.
    I don’t mean to be overly critical software can do great things, especially in the area of user ergonomics. And the R1 vehicles are very attractive and I believe interesting. I have a Taycan because I weigh HW over SW. :-)

I seen this on an other EV platform to provide the driver a suggested speed to make it to destination when the State of Charge is less then the required if someone plans to drive faster then then posted speeds. I like to also see for the same situation in which the driver selects the desired speed one like to travel and the software provides the state of charge required to make it to the destination at such speed.

    Tom, great interview. I agree with your request about showing the charging curve, but you are an expert and actually know what that charging curve "should" look like, unlike the vast majority of owners so maybe that's more useful to you compared to the average person. In addition to the charging curve, we also need to see what power the vehicle is requesting (or able to take) vs what the charger is actually providing (in real time). Because currently there is no way to know if the charger is derating for some reason (because there's a problem) or the vehicle is derating (because of lack of preconditioning). If it's the charger, then I'm just wasting my time and should move to another charger. But, if it's the vehicle, then there's no point moving. For example, I was at a FreeWire charger recently that is capable of providing 150kW, but it was only putting out 75kW (because it's internal battery was somewhat depleted from a previous user). Anyway, my R1S gives no indication that the charger is the limiting factor in that case. Please consider amending your request to Rivian to include the two requested vs provided charge rates.

    • @alexnutcasio936
      @alexnutcasio936 Рік тому

      How is the software going to know the charger is having issues? It may be able to read what Charger is producing, but without a communication protocol,it won’t know.

    • @BruceYanagida
      @BruceYanagida Рік тому

      I probably wasn't clear. Not asking for any more information from the charger. We can already see the charge rate coming from the charger. But, what I want to know is what charge rate is the vehicle actually capable of accepting at a given time (it could be much higher). Then, it's clear which side is the limiting factor (charger or the vehicle), and I can decide what to do about it (if anything).

    Happy for those that tow, but prefer Rivian prioritize new functions rather than new ways to display data. Low probability I'll care about motor temps. Instead, add cruise control resume, lane change without having to reset Driver+, expanded Driver+ coverage, better infotainment capabilities, Google maps, self parking, multi destination route planning, etc., etc. I understand the benefits of controlling the software stack, but sometimes it's better to go with best of bread like CarPlay and Android Auto.

  • @viplav76
    @viplav76 Рік тому

    With legacy makers, or whatever they are called, it’s worth understanding that they have been building cars over the embedded principle. Where software is localized, built to each part & the integration is then of all of them coming together. The startups are really bringing the stack approach. Don’t see how these brands can catchup. It’s not about the will, but about the way. Battery is a new industry, really.

      The R1's had adaptive cruise control since day 1. What they don't have is the ability to turn off the "adaptive" part and just provide regular cruise control. Why would we want that? Simple, when driving, say, in the winter and snow and/or ice builds up on the front sensors (or just plain dirt), the entire cruise control is temporarily disabled until the sensors are cleaned. That's really annoying on long road trips. Similarly if you're driving into the sun that creates glare on the camera. Rivian has made some improvements with regards to the glare but they really need to provide the ability to use regular cruise control while the adaptive part is disabled or anytime for that matter. @Rivian

    I haven’t followed this area as closely as ~3+ yrs ago. Is this one of the first times an OTA update changed the driving dynamics of at least one system that the OEM didn’t produce, I assume Rivian bought their suspensions from a supplier?
    Others are just cosmetic changes or infotainment as mentioned and too often they aren’t OTA updates. Requiring a dealership visit to do a software update is a hideous thought as my5yr old Model3 has spoiled me.

I've switched to regularly using Sport in Soft Mode instead of All-Purpose, but that's not ideal. The suspension needs to better absorb bumps without getting bouncy and mushy. My other non air suspension cars do that very well.

    No temperature gauges needed. All warning gauges are a waste of everyone's time & money. The best part is no part. Who cares about all these temperatures of motors, coolant, differentials & transmissions. Oil pressure gauges etc.
    Rolls Royce stoped in 1974, using temp & oil pressure gauges. Too many calls from worried owners so gone. A big red warning only when you need to know. I don't give a damn about any of it's operating temperature just do the job I purchased you for in silence. I don't want to be pestered because your rhf wheel motor is warming up. Hey Tom, I wanted to correct you about something you got wrong in your last video, it was about the Tesla superchargers becoming available for all electrical vehicles.... Whoever provided that NACS adapter(believe-it-or-not, its probably Elon Musk himself) to you is trying to sneak in this narrative that "Tesla superchargers will open up on a car-by-car automaker basis and that narrative is extremely dangerous". Make no mistake, all Tesla superchargers must open to all EV automakers by 2024 (it doesn't matter the automaker or the manufacturer) and this had been instated by the Biden Administration. Dont let them(Elon Musk) fool you and tell you "ohh well, we're going to open up the Tesla superchargers to Ford and other automakers because we have an agreement with them", the biden administration made it clear that those superchargers must open up to all EV's.

      I think you may have misunderstood Tom. Tesla superchargers will be made available to all vehicles via either Tesla to CCS adapter or magic dock. What’s happening on a car by car basis is their adoption of the NACS (Tesla) connector in the vehicles themselves. I think Tom has consistently made that distinction.

    When on earth are they going to implement support for text messages? Rivian seems utterly tone deaf about how customers use their cars and what features are useful, especially for people who work for a living.
    A friend of mine who bought an R1S is on the verge of considering selling her vehicle over lack of text message support. She's on the road a lot and need to keep in touch with clients. How on earth can they build a modern car, let alone a modern EV, and fail to implement such a basic feature?
    Implement CarPlay/Android auto or take seriously the implementation of core software features that have been available in even the cheapest cars for 10+ years. It seems the height of arrogance to not implement a feature requested for so long.

      The R1S is a much smoother mall crawler (if you want that) now. If you don’t want that, you can still keep the ‘old’ setting by pushing a button to keep it stiff. @@fpartidafpartida No, actually I have driven a software updated R1S and it's still nowhere near the ride quality of my Grand Cherokee. And why would my Grand Cherokee need to get better when it already has a perfect ride quality? Jeep engineers dialed in the air suspension to have just the right amount amount of compression and rebound to soak up bumps to maintain comfort while not sacrificing handling or road manners. Rivian, on the other hand, will have to learn how to refine their suspension systems over time. Maybe someday they'll get it right. For now, that's not the case.

      I own both a Tesla Model 3 and a Rivian R1S. Dude (love my Tesla), but sit this one out. Rivian software updates have been able to level (as in raise or lower all 4 corners of the vehicle) in camp mode, added snow mode (which drastically improved safety), softened the ride suspension….in other words altered the physical ride and experience characteristics of the vehicle. Tesla updates are fun and all, but they can’t control sway or stiffness. Rivian has more cameras and dynamic control in their vehicles, so can by default offer better software upgrades.
