BGG Review list - boardgamegeek....
The timing with April Fool's pranks is amusing. Asking "is this just a ruse?" at each part of the video made it that much more enjoyable.
Just “the two of us”? I do believe you’re forgetting the contributions of the occasional presenter who clearly must be the one filming this segment, Bessie.
As a person who has a nasty eye infection right now, please start looking after yourself by getting that bloodshot eye checked out. It could save your eyesight, fella.
I couldnt hear what he was saying because I was looking at his bloodshot eye lol
Who would ever donate on Patreon. It couldn't be me. Could never be me.
Your boardgame content is simply the best. I especially like your longer-form videos. Happy to be a patron. :)
It's April 1st, but NPI are no fools!
Just watched the video and, although I don't always agree with your reviews, I DO appreciate the level of integrity and independence you have. Over the last couple of years, I have seen some of my favorite review sites go from passion projects that produced content that was really deep and interesting, to complete sell outs doing weekly Kickstarter playthroughs. It's so disappointing to watch that happen. And it must be very difficult for you not to go down the same path. The bottom line is that your video worked, and I sent along some money to keep you going. Keep up the good work!
I wish I had money. Best of wishes.
"Pateron" what an AMAZING April fools gag.
I almost clicked the link in the description.
You two are sooo cute! A;ways bring a smile to my face. Thank you!
Arkham lcg part 2 😗🎶
It’s absolutely illogical, but I still want this video more than any board game review I can think of. I can’t explain it.
so excited for npi to start doing board game reviews!
Jokes on them, I am a board game company and I am subscribing on Patreon
I'm on board! Love your work, I appreciate the quality before quantity ethos ❤️
I'd consider signing up for the Patreon, if only the entry-level tier were a bit lower. €5/month (+VAT) may not be much but can still be quite significant from the fan's point of view, especially on a yearly basis and while supporting other channels as well. I say this with the utmost respect, because I thoroughly enjoy your videos, I acknowledge they're a lot of effort that we can consume for free, and of course you do *deserve* the higher tiers (using the wording from the Patreon) 😘
You can make a custom pledge on patreon at whatever amount you like!
That's great! Found it 😊
Please don't replace all the signs in Shropshire with ostriches. My wife an I are doing a self drive holiday of the UK soon and I really don't want to run over any ostriches.
try riding the ostriches instead
I like this idea of revisiting the classics guys. That would be dope.
Question: do viewers really expect this level of independence from a board game reviewer? I mean, I don't know anyone who would suspect your motives for simply accepting a review copy of a game. For the most part, I would think that someone who's interested in a review would watch a few videos from various reviewers they like and then make a decision based on all of those? And not solely rely on the opinion of one reviewer? Which again, raises the question of how much responsibility to be independent you're putting on yourself. We like your videos and we watch em, but we don't hold you responsible for our own decisions. Hopefully you can keep making videos in a way that doesn't affect your whole financial (and personal) life!
Good Q. Personally I’m not a fan of “I got this preview copy long long before anyone will ever see the game, and it’s only got one scenario and half the rules needed to play but I feel totally qualified in saying two years from now when you get a copy on your porch it’s going to be AMAZING”. But on the other hand I don’t begrudge an actual shipping copy of the game. I don’t think many reviewers are so hard up for something to do that they’re going to be biased by the opportunity to just try a game without paying for it.
Some reviewers give away all the review copies after they review them as a way to keep the slate clean.
For me, yes and no. I dont care that heavy cardboard do sponsored streams. But for example, they dont make their thoughts public if its sponsored. They just play the game. So they dont need to solve the review part of the problem. Then you have Rahdo for example. He looks like he LOVES every game he touches (most of it sponsored). But i heard once, that he is pretty picky about games he choses to review and preview, so he can be overly optimistic in general, without being dishonest? Then there are smaller channels like boardgaming ramblings, who get review copy and do sponsored video (i think) here and there. But they are still very believable and at times very critical (its fine, its supposed to be critique). Then there is dice tower, who can rate sponsored game 2/10 and anyone will try to get their game on dicetower, because its like being on IMDB. So i would love for NPI, to find a good ballance and make a WHOLE LOT money in the process, because they deserve it. Long story short, i think its much more complicated question than it looks.
On the podcast, this decision was given the context of British law (IIRC) having just made the ridiculous decision that if you get a review copy of something, you need to mark all your content about it as sponsored, which NPI did not want to do.
Exited to see this new direction! Sad to see the ostriches go though…
It's good to see the boss 😃
No Churn included!!!
(...just 2 and a half...with Bessie!!!)
Having trouble understanding the “we don’t accept sponsorships from absolutely anyone” thing. You used to be sponsored by skillshare, a website completely separate from the board game industry. There’s no chance that influenced the content of your reviews in any way, so why not accept that type of sponsorship? If it helps you make more money to keep doing what you do so well, I don’t see why you would deny yourselves of that. Maybe I’m missing something though! Always happy to be educated if that’s the case.
Yeah, we tried external sponsors, it didn't work. I won't bore you with the specifics but the general gist is that sponsors want BIG EYEBALLS, and it incentivised us to make things that attracts BIG EYEBALLS rather than things that felt interesting to us or worthwhile to make. We're not against big eyeballs, but it's much better if big eyeballs happen as a by-product of the work that we do rather than making work to attract big eyeballs.
@@NoPunIncluded ah, makes sense! Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Cheers!
1, 2, 3... We're gonna need more cheddar.
How did you know about the falling asleep thing🤔
I'll happily pay for Your self care!
I mean there's being independent, and then there's not accepting review copies, that's just silly 😅
i would support you but only if Puns were included
Dune colon Imperium dash Uprising ❤
I'll be honest, if you're not going to blow it all on artisinal beads, then what's even the point in supporting you?
❤
Just wondering, do you guys have day jobs or is this a full time gig?
This is our work and has been for some time.
@@NoPunIncluded appreciate the reply guys, thank you 🙏
I was wondering the same thing and genuinely hope you thrive and enjoy yourselves.
No Paypal donation option?
Sorry, no paypal donation option :(
No thanks, I prefer channels that open the game, play a single round, take money from the publisher, and recommend the game as a must buy /s
I was a Patreon supporter for your channel in the past, but you simply don’t review very many board games and your content is very intermittent. In contrast, I support Paul Grogan at Gaming Rules who produces a LOT of content and provides deep playthroughs and gives a ton of insight. I support 7 other UA-camrs that cover board games that produce at least 3-4x more content than you do at a level as deep or deeper with integrity, ethics, and honesty. Seriously, I like you both a lot, and your content is very good, but highly sporadic and inconsistent.
While I don't agree with you on the notion that more "content" is strictly better, could you please name the other channels that you consider as deep, honest, ethical, and integrious as NPI?
If you don't see what's special about this channel, that's fine, but don't pretend it's not there; love to compare apples and oranges.
@@spasibosasha - sure, I can name a few, but I’ll proactively add that these are niche UA-camrs based on my gaming interests: (1) The Dungeon Dive (for dungeon crawlers and RPGs) and (2) the Players’ Aid (for war games), (3) The Hungry Gamer (also for dungeon crawlers & RPGs), and (4) Tana Pigeon @ Word Mill Games who focuses on solo RPGs, and (5) Seth Locke (who focuses on campaign / adventure board games primarily).
There are quite a few review channels I subscribe to, but for me, NPI (along with SU&SD) is next level. If I have to wait, to get thoughtful commentaries on history and colonialism, or to laugh until I fall I over, for me it’s worth supporting; and I know now how my tastes synch with this channel. I don’t need a video on every kickstarter (I’d pass out from fomo), but I’m happy there are different channels for different preferences and different levels of engagement.
Paul Grogan who recieves sponsorships and has worked at publisher booths in the past? That Paul Grogan? The Hungry Gamer who does a fuck tonne of Kickstarter games as paid preview content? The Players Aid who has a very close relationship with Wargame publishers and softballed an interview with a designer of a very questionable game about a future US Civil War? All of which do nothing but incredibly boring man drones in to camera and rambles for 30-40 minutes. That's why they can crank out so much because it's all so boring low quality reviews or unboxings.
You're comparing apples to oranges here.
youtubers not emotionally manipulating their viewers for money challenge
@Quackalope
I don't think people appreciate the consequences of being independent. It's not just that they don't accept review copies, it also means they miss out on the views/engagement for reviews of new and hot games. Publishers give pre-release copies to reviewers to ensure that by the time consumers can purchase their stuff, there are videos out to help influence them. Those early videos of games are often the most popular (and maybe the most rushed?) and NPI is opting out of those extra views ($) on top of paying out of pocket to review games. The benefit is coverage not financially influenced by the hotness. Support if you can!
Maybe even an Arkham Horror LCG part 2 video.
so the next game in the review cycle is Fromage
Looking forward to your unbiased cheese tower reviews!
I’ve joined up on Patreon. Please spend a bit on getting that eye checked out, tho.
The dymanic of you two, along with editing is just... fantastic, absolutly well done all around.
Looking forward to the 7th Citadel review! I don't think enough people are talking about it.
What if you don't want to donate to this weird boardgame idea but directly to fund the cheese statue?
please follow identical instructions as if you were to donate to the weird board game idea, we can separate it out on our end
@@NoPunIncluded phew that's good to hear.
I'd not want anyone to think I was promoting such mad ideas as boardgame collecting!
Cheese statues, now there's the future!
Any chance you will be doing “heroes of the sanctum” preview or thoughts or anything? It’s a small kickstarter but seems like big ideas.
Just became a supporter. Thank you for the great and witty content
I am already a proud Patreon supporter of this channel.
You are one the best content creators out there, you definitely get my first patreon support ever !
You wish for funds to create further content? How novel!
Love you both!
