Joao Belo racing solo KOMs is one thing. A face to face race between Lionel and Phil would be easily Phil. Phil knows cycling racing strategy and when/not to turn on the boosters.
@SEAL CYCLE Phil training 100% everyday. Well not as much as Lionel but Phil is training a lot. And as far as the extra muscle, it's his swimming muscle that is holding him back, compared to Phil. All his other muscles are the reason he is so fast! And his swimming muscles are much needed, he's a triathlete after all. I like that the muscle man was able to out climb the skinny guy, it gives me hope. But I think this climb is a the shallow side right? 5%maybe? So there might be a benefit of getting low which takes mass (muscle mass) to do so. So perhaps on a 10% climb, Phil would take him?
The KOM has always (since 1970) been considered Palisades ranger station, because the significant downhill section after that. Back in the day we would start from Tanque Verde. I believe the record from there was 1:43 set by Tim Wilson a serious badass racer.
Strava KOM wars + UA-cam = perhaps a very entertaining 2020?? Mt Lemmon has been on my bucket list for a while. This video definitely is inspiring me to finally get at it.
Normally it is difficult to know how steep a climb is when you see people climbing on video. Because I’ve now watched enough of Lionel on video crushing a mad cadence on the flats, seeing him pump up some of those climbs at sub 75 really drives home the difficulty in some parts. Great video. Yes, climbing Mt. Lemmon should be all the way to the top (or as far up as legally allowed). You don’t see people claiming to have climbed Everest and only making it to Hillary’s step. There is “a Mt. Lemmon hill climb” and then there is “THE Mt. Lemmon Hill climb”. Sanders is “King of THE”. “Are you calling people out now”?--yes, he is, but not in a jerk type of way. He’s throwing it down in most respectful way possible. A humble type of call out......
Just rode up Mt Lemon last week. You now can go past the gate at the ski lodge. 1.5 mile is a hard climb. Then you come to a second locked gate. The UofA has telescopes in that locked up area. Differance is I took over 6 hours to get to top, I dilly-Dallyed along the way. Rode from my house mid-town. 85 mile round trip.
Seen the obvious physicall difference between you and Gaimon, some gentle piece of advice here. You can win some watts by dressing up more aero, so skin suit and tighter helm straps ;) .. Good luck!
You got the power for sure. I think the speed is high enough some little changes to aerodynamics could make big difference - Phil did it in skin suit, I'd do the same, plus if watch his video on flatter parts he was almost in tt position with forearms resting on the tops (not fully upright on them). Over 90 minutes could make big difference.
Liking both Lionel and Phil very much... if you want to beat the cookie monster you're going to have to get areo my friend... no more baggy shirts and flappy helmet straps! I think a collab is coming!!!! very much hoping for it!
Yes go take cookie boys KOMs this postponed season LOL that would rough his feathers and be good competition. Phil’s riding background vs your tri background.. it will come down to mental toughness because y’all both have the watts. I’m all in for this series
He is a runner foremost... I believe running has a lot more exertion and body taxation so if had that as a foundation growing up his heart size prolly grew accordingly The guys heart is prolly super big (physically) as well as super strong and healthy... and so having that running down as a foundation once he became super saiyan on the road bike and train/race with the two including some swim the man is truly in shape mentally physically... the man knows how to push hard and suffer ... all that said dang I just am in 1 mins in when they started the ride when I wanted to look up phil gaimon comment cuz gaimon is a viscous world class cyclist who has so so many KOMS I watched like 10 of his retired cyclist vids and where he goes to different cities and places and rides with some guys and does KOMs I saw the vegan cyclist one that is what got me into phil gaimon Gaimon is a monster when it comes to having a KOM... so let us see what we have for us this vid is gonna be fucking gnarly!
@SEAL CYCLE I'm talking he was a runner before these TT since people on here are saying hes a really super cyclist running is just as hard or harder sport ..lionel said it himself he was more into running
Have you considered getting a Garmin watch? It would save a lot of time when uploading data. And their HRM tri is built correctly for a triathlon. Food for thought. "Keep calm and carry on."
in the period of 1,5 years i have changed 3 garmin belts. 1 tri and two run... total cost 250 euros in greek shops. I am wearing now for about a year long wahoo tickr with no problems at all and for total cost 54 euros . HRM tri is a waste of money...
I'm sorry to hear you had terrible experiences with Garmin HRM's. I had one HRM go down after about a year of daily usage. I called Garmin up, and they send me a new one free of charge. 🤟
You could save time and decrease watts by running a skin suit like phil, might be minuscule but watts are watts, just an FYI. It would be so cool to see you take the KOM from phil!!!
Hey lionel. Just wondering if you either moved the saddle back a fraction or changed stem length to slightly longer version, that might both open the chest area & increase aero position ( rather than the slightly hunched position) would that increase your efficiency and therefore speed and power/watts ??? And get the all the records?😀 Great ride, just an opinion I was commenting on. Keep the videos coming. Hoping to do my first triathlon when this covid 19 passes 🤞 and your videos give me great inspiration.
At those speeds, you should give more thoughts to aerodynamics (eg: skinsuit). I think a TT bike would be faster for you despite de 2-3 kg difference (or, at least, aerobars)
@SEAL CYCLE It's hard to say without testing but apparently aero is better than low weight for grades under 10%. If you can hold the watts a tt bike might be faster.
What aero extensions does Lionel use? I need my extensions to be pointed higher, especially since the angled spacer for the canyon speed max is unavailable.
We are all waiting for this kind of 'night-calls' - even if it's far away in the real moment. A real WOW Mt Lemmon attempt - Phil should be frighted!!! Stay tuned - and thanks to Erin!
I would love to see a head to head competition!! Same day, side by side. Phil VS Lionel best man wins. (Phil would win) but still wound be fun to watch! ;D
370w for almost 80 minutes and you aren‘t top 3. What the hell? How damn competitive is this segment? Most segments in my area are closer to 370w for 5-10 minutes for a KOM XD.
Lionel is something like 75kg whereas Phil G is probably 60 or 65kg so Lionel's power to weight is not exactly world class for climbing. He would however kill at most domestic races
Good for you getting out there and measuring up against time and speed instead of staying indoors and only think about watts. It's about beeing on the road. Cheers P.S.: Why don't you ride in the drops? #AeroAlwaysWins
Maybe you should start to train then ? I dont know 1 single hobby rider who trains regularly (3 times a week) who cant hold 374w for at least 4-5 Minutes....... There is ofc a big difference between 80min 374 and 4-5min 374 ^^ but 1 minute ? Come one... riding your bike 3 times a week shall get your there in a couple months....
Yeah, he averaged 373 watts up Mt. Lemmon for an hour and a half and I am gonna focus on his helmet straps. More impressive is definitely going to be w/kg. Definition of “beast”.
Come on and grow a pair, call Phil out for the real KOM , and the both of you do it together heads up. Better than spending several hours watching a swim, bike, run event!!!!!!!
lionel sanders vs phil gaimon on strava KOMs? maybe 2020 isnt so bad after all!
My guess is he doesn’t come close but I’ll keep watching
@@moytheboy22 well I'm not gonna spoil anything....
yeah they really should meet and make some videos together
altandrew crazy! Closer than I was expecting.
Joao Belo racing solo KOMs is one thing. A face to face race between Lionel and Phil would be easily Phil. Phil knows cycling racing strategy and when/not to turn on the boosters.
'I'm coming for you Phil'. I love it! This is war. I new Lionel was fast on a flat, but the fact that he could be on par with Phil, a climber!
Lionel not only beat Phil’s time in the second attempt but weight a lot more...
Strava KOM wars + UA-cam = perhaps a very entertaining 2020?? Mt Lemmon has been on my bucket list for a while. This video definitely is inspiring me to finally get at it.
COUNT ME IN!
Lol perhaps
I have some extra time on my hands lately. Just say when and promise to stay 6 feet away! 😷🤣
Normally it is difficult to know how steep a climb is when you see people climbing on video. Because I’ve now watched enough of Lionel on video crushing a mad cadence on the flats, seeing him pump up some of those climbs at sub 75 really drives home the difficulty in some parts. Great video.

2020 just took a turn for the good with this Strava war

those helmet straps though!.!.!..
I swear those helmet straps and jersey were Lionel trolling hard, I was in stitches looking at them. 😂😂
Aero not making a huge difference going up hill
@@runbikerun8189 That's bs, as long as the slope is below a certain grade, think i read 4,5% somewhere, it makes loads of difference! Trust me
@@runbikerun8189 16mph for over an hour, aero makes a difference.
There is something different in the overall bahaviour/aura of Lionel recently. Such a fresh and positive attitude. Love it.
This is awesome! I WANT more Lionel going up against UA-cam endurance athletes like this.
Great content as ever. Phil Vs Lionel! Can't wait.

How about all the marginal gains, like Ceramicspeed bearings, factory prepared racing chain, and such.
Skinsuit, slight position changes, shoe covers, trip socks and you’ll gain a lot of time at the same power expenditure. (Great power!)
Just saw his 2nd attempt on Strava and Lionel has the KOM.
Also Phil commented "BRB with a TT bike"
The game is ON!!!!
Lol much fun. Two very fun guys.
Awesome ride Lionel!! I've been lucky enough to ride Mt Lemmon in 2018 and 2019 and absolutely love it. I really enjoy following both you and Phil :-)
Great to see some proffessionals going for KOMs!
Phil gaimon is a pro cyclist and has so many KOMs Phil is viscous on the bike man...
Lionel good job man!
A 4% climb, that's TT bike territory. Also, a skin suit, and an aero hemlet would seal the deal for sure
Pushing a big gear! I have done Lemmon numerous times and it's a ton of fun! There used to be a Mount Lemmon TT, but never to the top...
Liking both Lionel and Phil very much... if you want to beat the cookie monster you're going to have to get areo my friend... no more baggy shirts and flappy helmet straps! I think a collab is coming!!!! very much hoping for it!
Two of my favorite youtube channels: Lionel Sanders and Phil Gaimon
Time to post the updated KOM! you rock!
Yes go take cookie boys KOMs this postponed season LOL that would rough his feathers and be good competition. Phil’s riding background vs your tri background.. it will come down to mental toughness because y’all both have the watts. I’m all in for this series
Lionel Sanders you crack me up LOL. I love the intensity keep up the great videos
Love it! Goal getting and competing for the KOM. Great video! Motivational for me.
Holding 370W for 80 seconds would surely put me into cardiac arrest. 80 minutes?! Lionel you’re a monster. 😳
Haha
Alexander Budzisz
I’ve been training for two years and I can only hold 370 watts for 11 minutes. Seventy minutes is insane!
He is a runner foremost...
I believe running has a lot more exertion and body taxation so if had that as a foundation growing up his heart size prolly grew accordingly
The guys heart is prolly super big (physically) as well as super strong and healthy... and so having that running down as a foundation once he became super saiyan on the road bike and train/race with the two including some swim the man is truly in shape mentally physically... the man knows how to push hard and suffer
... all that said
dang I just am in 1 mins in when they started the ride when I wanted to look up phil gaimon comment
cuz gaimon is a viscous world class cyclist who has so so many KOMS
I watched like 10 of his retired cyclist vids and where he goes to different cities and places and rides with some guys and does KOMs
I saw the vegan cyclist one that is what got me into phil gaimon
Gaimon is a monster when it comes to having a KOM... so let us see what we have for us this vid is gonna be fucking gnarly!
@SEAL CYCLE I'm talking he was a runner before these TT since people on here are saying hes a really super cyclist running is just as hard or harder sport
..lionel said it himself he was more into running
Phil Gaimon is also much more aero while going for his KOMs. Which matters a lot at your speeds.
Yes, more KOM videos!
Have you considered getting a Garmin watch? It would save a lot of time when uploading data. And their HRM tri is built correctly for a triathlon. Food for thought. "Keep calm and carry on."
So does wahoo. Lionel is just not the most technological person. :) he does not like smart phones haha.

If someone will put a strobe on Lionel's seat-post we'll not say a word about those helmet straps! : ^ )
I gave a thumbs up before even watching the video knowing it would be great and as always it was!!
Lionel, you're a monster. Cheering for you on Zwift and at Kona 👍
Lionel, what sunnies are you wearing?
The man.
God bless you
Love this, I watch phil on his worst retirement, it's pretty sweet to see another hammer go for KOMs.
We all see that you took the KOM today. 3-17...when's the video coming out? Can't wait!
Never seen your channel, but I live in Tucson for a few months of the year. I just spend my time on the west side trail running instead.
Can't wait for Mt. Lemmon part 2! Gor for the official segment!
Lionel you should have done this on the speedmax...aero gains always above 18 kph
But not as many watts in TT position bruh
And then sent a donation to no kid goes hungry 😂. I love it 🤙
Agreed. I live in Tucson. Ski valley is the real ride.
I want to see Wurf’s time.
Canyon should give him an Ultimate for hill climbs.
Now he got one ;)
You could save time and decrease watts by running a skin suit like phil, might be minuscule but watts are watts, just an FYI. It would be so cool to see you take the KOM from phil!!!
Love this guy!
I agree all the way to the top is the real record
nice and you got the real KOM
Great vid and content as always. you will snag it for sure. but, FFS, throw a Bonty Flare or another high viz light on your bike.
Great videos always, very inspiring. What kind of device you have on your ears which are outside of them? is this for music? thanks a lot
Ok, this looks awesome
What is that piece of equipment (?) that's wrapped around your head and ears ending at your temples?
Waiting for the next 🍋 KOM in a couple weeks 👍👏

Can’t you ride another 3-4 miles once you get to the ski hill if the gate is open? I thought that was the steepest part of the climb.

Lionel Sanders: hold my pizza and watch this

200 watts is like an average person @ 90-100 RPM, 300 would be really good, 370 -400 is fucked.
