      @@changsangma1915 Wonder Woman was "Meh" at best.
      They should have had James Cameron make the film then it would have been Awesome.
      Wonder Woman needed to be a fully realized character, not some cookie cutter 2D cut and paste female super hero
      James Cameron wrote and directed the first 2 Terminator films, Sarah Conner (played by Linda Hamilton) was a bad ass lead character, she did not look like a Super Model, she started off weak and scared (as she should seeing as how a Terminator was trying to kill her) but once she understood the situation she "Woman'ed Up" and became one of the all-time great female badasses of all time, look how she was portrayed in Terminator 2 Judgement Day.
      Ellen Ripley portrayed by (Sigourney Weaver)
      She was introduced into the Alien Franchise as the sole human survivor and she showed she was a tough Boss Bitch, when James Cameron wrote and directed "Aliens" he dialed up her BadAssery up to 11 and she joined Linda Hamilton as being 2 of the biggest Boss Bitches who kick ass in Cinematic History.

    • @DerMoerpler
      @DerMoerpler Рік тому +18

      That's what I liked too but it made the ending so much more frustrating. When I saw this movie for the first time, I was positively surprised when Diana killed the german officer she suspected to be Ares with ease and... nothing happens. The fight goes on. I thought for a moment the movie was going for a more nuanced ending, where our naive hero realizes that humanity is not only good and peaceful people who have been misled by the god of war, but that people are complex and killing one big bad will usually not stop a conflict, because the roots of war are much deeper than that. That there are problems you can't just punch away. I was honestly in awe that a superhero blockbuster would go for such an understated but thematically fitting climax.
      But of course, it actually didn't go there and we got a cheap twist and our 15 minutes of CGI people punching each other real hard and then World War 1, one of the most complex conflicts in human history, is ended because one bad guy was killed. Because god forbid a comic book blockbuster doesn't end with a big action sequence, no matter how much more interesting the alternative is.

  • @ghostsurfer23
    @ghostsurfer23 Рік тому +2

    There's a UA-camr named Filmento who makes really great little video essays on comic book movies, and he really nailed why this movie almost worked but doesn't. This movie presents the notion of "there is no single force corrupting mankind. Some parts of humanity are just bad. But the good parts of humanity are still worth protecting." That's a really nuanced and beautiful take, especially for the origin story of an immortal superhero who lives throughout multiple ages.
    Problem is, because of the conventions of superhero movies (at least mid/mediocre/bad ones) the hero still has to have a big punch out with some CGI monster at the end. So the movie tries and fails to have its cake and eat it too by presenting that message, but having Ares still be a thing anyway. And it's even more ridiculous when everyone suddenly stops fighting, as if that stopped all war forever when this is LITERALLY WORLD WAR ~1~
    DC comics movies, at least around the time this came out, had a habit of usually being pretty bad, and the ones that were kind of okay were still miserable and grey, because the executives at Warner Bros. who make the creative decisions fundamentally misunderstand what people like about comic book movies. So when this came out it was almost a breath of fresh air by being...kinda sorta okay lol But its flaws show more and more over time. I'd say Wonder Woman 1984 is just as good, but for wildly different reasons (the Shrek 2 effect lol) so take from that what you will.

    The film version of Diana is an amalgamation of all of the prior versions from the comics, though the main ones would be during the late great illustrator/writer George Perez (Greek myths, Ares as a primary Machiavellian adversary, Diana formed from clay, each character given a rich complexity, probably my favorite run, also responsible for creating many of the elements of The Teen Titans) & the current run reignited by Greg Rucka (daughter of Zeus, her clay origin tied instead to a version to Donna Troy).
    As an aside, amongst the many amazing storylines during this run, the Perez version of the Amazons (who physiologically had always been depicted as superior to your average human, lacking things like certain mortal vulnerabilities and having near immortality. Probably why Diana could explain away things without realizing her true divine heritage in the film.) were quite distinctive, as they were all reincarnated souls of abused women who died before their time, with no knowledge of their past lives, revived collectively by the Greek goddesses and led by Antiope & Hippolyta. Specifically in this regard, Hippolyta's past life died while pregnant, so when she was reborn, she had this specific need of wanting a child of her own. As a reward of her leadership and in answer to this calling, she was directed by her patron goddesses to a specific beach on the Amazonian island, Themyscira.
    This spot not so coincidentally happened to be the final resting place of someone too formed from clay by the Greek gods as a tool of inquisitive temptation (for the Titan Epimetheus, the twin brother of Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to mankind, so by association was designated for their wrathful punishment too) Pandora (bearer of the infamous jar, often referred to as Pandora's box). When breath left Pandora's body, it disintegrated into clay, mingling with the earth on the beach, used as the medium to form the infant child that would become Diana.
    Now this serves to illustrate that not only was Diana the reincarnation of Hippolyta's past life's child, but she was meant to be a beacon of hope for mankind in the face of destructive forces set upon them by what was released from Pandora's jar, whereas Pandora had been initially created to set those very same destructive forces with hope remaining as the last to leave said vessel. They essentially were the reverse of he same coin.
    Tying into this figuratively & visually, Perez turned the rounded lid of Pandora's jar into a amulet for his version of the mythological figure, Harmonia (goddess of harmony & concord, daughter to the respective embodiments of war & love, Ares & Aphrodite). Using this amulet on anyone would show their inherit weaknesses.
    Because of this Harmonia, being fully aware of her father's actions while still caring about him, hoped for someone to bring him to task, pacifying as peacefully as possible, and thus loaned her amulet to someone she deemed worthy, Diana, who was able to exploit his weaknesses with the lid (as a symbolic metaphor for a coin flip, leading to a definitive decision based on outcome), and ultimately saving the world and the redemptive relationship between father & daughter.
    Complicated? Yes.
    Too much to ever try to adapt in one film? Perhaps.
    Would I have preferred something like this rather than what was used in the final film? Leagues better.
    But, you get what you get, and if this film ever generated enough interest of new readers in any of the comics, especially Perez's run, I'm truly happy for it's existence.
    After all, while not perfectly executed, the film is still a fairly worthy endeavor.

The rest of the DCEU, at the time, was so lackluster and bloated that this particular entry into the franchise seemed really good in comparison. But it was neither great nor terrible, just okay. I felt like at one point they were going for a stronger message (Man's nature for war) but even that was ruined by its CGI mess of an ending and cliched villain. So, at the end of the day it was more or less a serviceable movie that was carried by the chemistry and charisma of its two leads. Unfortunately the same chemistry and charisma couldn't save its sequel.

Films like Harry and the Hendersons, Batteries Not Included, Weekend at Bernie’s, and even more recent ones like Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Garden State, or Book of Love. I could go on forever, but o guess I’m just wasting my breath at this point. Maybe if any of you read this and agree with my general taste, you can help me get those films in her line of sight. Yes, a genuinely thrilling super hero movie. "Marvel gives their actors more leeway" ... try telling that to Ed Norton who was kicked out as The Hulk for not sticking to the cookie cutter Marvel movie universe. They also kicked brilliant Edgar Wright (of Shaun of the Dead fame) off directing Ant-Man because he wanted to be creative, and instead got a generic comedy director to make that movie. DC universe movies are much darker than the original comic books and unlike The Black Panther, The Dark Knight genuinely deserved a best movie Oscar nomination as it's considered the best comic book movie.

    I did really enjoy this movie quite a bit when it came out. Diana's idealism was a refreshing bit of hope & optimism in the oft-dismal DCEU, especially since those qualities are usually associated with Superman & he definitely didn't seem to embody them at the time.
    A detail that I thought was clever on the part of the writers: Ares is essentially responsible for creating the Armistice & the terms of ending the war. But the Armistice ended up putting crushing demands on the losers, Germany in particular, so that it gave rise to a fierce nationalism in their politics that...well, you probably know how Germany turned out after that. In this movie, Ares claims that he no longer has any direct power to cause war, but I thought this detail showed that he was still very capable of creating/sowing conflict, even through peace. Of course, the final CGI fight kind of undermined the more cerebral take on the causes of conflict, but up till then (& even with his surprise reveal near the end) I thought it was rather well-done.

    Wow, for the first time I totally disagree with you. While DC is basically horrible translating their heroes to film, I feel this is the only film that lived up to the character. I've been a comic collector since 1960, so I grew up with these characters and DC was my first universe. I think the difference is that DC was historically stuck in the "kids" approach, black & white characters ... good or evil and zero shades of grey. Stan Lee brought shades of grey, brought realism to super-heroes, and Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko placed a huge part in that. Previously, only Bill Finger and Gardner Fox did that with DC. I place this Wonder Woman film third in rankings of great comic films, behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: The First Avenger. All three were historic in story, based on the two World Wars, and I appreciated the WWI references in Wonder Woman. I won't bash you or anybody for the opinion, since everybody is totally entitled to it, but I found it sad that you didn't see in it what I did. Still love you, Nat!

    I would've preferred a more Greek hoplite style costume for a live-action Wonder Woman, like an Athenian linothorax, tassets, greaves, and vambraces. There could've been a thematic contrast with Diana in Athenian Greek armor and Ares forming a blackened steel Spartan breastplate for the final battle, like a thematic reference to the Peloponnesian War.

    I remember watching this movie on theaters back in 2017 and really enjoying my time up until the third act kicks in. The movie definitely has a tonal issue where it's trying to balance the more campy comic book style with a more epic and heroic style, to the point where you can pick the scene when she's trying on clothes and the no man's land scene and hardly believe that they're both from the same movie.
    That being said tho I remember being in the theater during the no man's land scene and being absolutely moved by it, I still think to this day that scene is peak heroism in superhero movies. It really showcase the strenghts of DC heroes, the combination of the raw power to face an army with the humility to do it for the people.
    Plus, the cinematography is really well excecuted, the way it builds up the tension and the constantly more and more desperate situation, the close ups of WW's distinct features before revealing her iconic figure, a good use of slow motion to accentuate how DIana percieves the world, a really strong soundtrack and a really good camera work, with some shots that feel like comic book panels.
    The third act is complete bonkers. It really fills like they wanted a final CGI fight and had to shoehorn one for the sake of it. And they really couldn't make it make sense with the theme that the movie was building up to.
