I salvaged my dad's beloved sheepskin after he passed away. I feel like he's giving me a hug when I wear it. Wore it in winter through pregnancy.❤ So warm. They don't make coats like them anymore
@JH-cx1vx. Can you please give us the brand of your dad‘s jacket please? It would be nice if I ever find something like that in a thrift store because you are absolutely right they don’t make good stuff anymore. thank you in advance
Yep. As warm as down fill, breathes, and unlike a puffy down jacket, you can bang it around in the woods, wear it in the rain and snow and the wool will keep you warm even if it gets wet as wool keeps its warmth at 80% saturation. You're done with down unless you have a very high water resistant, tough shell. Plus, it wears better after being banged around. Good vid.
@@salut9658no, that what you think it is. Leather become more rugged if you put them through shit! I mean Extremely Good Quality Leather, not cheap leather from your Department Stores! 😂
It's pretty amazing pricing. I joke that it was made by kids in the middle east. But yeah, no point in spending 2 grand on something I can get for 350. Stitching's a little sloppy, but again... Is it worth 1650 for nicer stitching?
@manictiger update, it was way too big, so I stuck it back on eBay and made an extra £40 ,In the end, we found a shop in London that are doing a very close copy of a Irvin and even got the vent holes under the arms ,£320 boy it's heavy ,and you can only wear a t-shirt under it as its to warm lol and they do the ginger wool
@@crazycressy7986 Nice. Mine's the right size (with multiple layers of clothing, but that's entirely the point). I love it. It's been ridiculously cold in this part of the U.S. lately. Not sure why you'd need vent holes. The whole point of Shearling, is that it lets moisture out, but doesn't let heat out. It's meant for the very cold.
@manictiger yes they would wear oversized jackets in the bombers ,no need to wear more clothes with mine ,we had -8 last week in the UK, and it was fine with just a t-shirt ,just wish it was a bit longer in the body so it would go past my butt lol ,the original Ervins would have 9 riveted vent holes to let out sweat ,don't forget shearing would still make you sweat under the arms ok wool will still keep you warm when wet ,this is why sailor's wear wool ,only other problem with mine is its got trimmed 10mm shearing and because the wool ends have been cut it itches ,where as the one I sold had full shearing and it was so soft but it was miles to big
@@crazycressy7986 I guess I just sweat less. In the winter, I only sweat in my sleep, or if I get food poisoning like I did like 2 years ago (always cook chicken nuggets thoroughly; "precooked" doesn't mean a thing).
That’s awesome! Personally I use a mixture of olive oil and beeswax, it works very well. I get it from a neighbour of mine but you can easily make your own. There is lots of different options out there though personally I just like to stick with natural ingredients if I have the choice.
You can get matching trousers or pants you call them made from the same material when you flying a spitfire at height body parts start to freeze Irvine RAF flying jacket. & matching pants
Bad ass coat brother! I’m looking at Christensen sheepskin right now. I was wondering what size/measurement is this one pit to pit? And what is your height?
Hi, I have an all-button shearling jacket, not the zipper style. It was given to me many winters ago and it looks old, very thick and heavy yes, used item. Its tag says Original Shearling by MB, Italy. Any idea what the initials stand for? Thanks.
Really nice coat. I've been trying to find one just like it for months now, even the same Bod and Christensen brand but somehow i have as yet to source one. From the looks of things, they (Bod and Christensen) only make women's clothing right now. Any suggestions?
does anyone know what oil to apply to a sheepskin that will transform the suede side of the sheepskin into the oiled finish that you can see in this video?
I live in the UK and would really like to own a good sheepskin coat but trying to buy one is nigh impossible. I won't buy anything from the internet anymore because i'm sick of sending things back because they never fit. Anyone any suggestions ?
My suggestion would be to take all your measurements from a coat that you have already that fits nice and ask the seller of whatever coat you want to buy to send you the measurements of the coat before you order it
You can get them in the UK for cheap at student vintage fairs, you usually don’t need to be a student to go to one, I got one for £40 about 3 years ago and it’s great.
Depending on your budget, and location and willingness to travel. aero leather is in Scotland and they make exact replicas of the sheepskin jackets that they had contracts for in ww2 to your dimensions. I bought a b7 jacket from them just by sending measurements and hoping and the fit is perfect, except maybe the sleeves could be an inch longer for the hug test but that’s on me for not allowing for that. If you are close to them I’m sure you could go to them and have them take your measurements themselves to ensure it’s perfect.
@@KyleMeyer949 great advice. My B6 jacket from Aero arrived today. I'm lucky enough to live near the Aero factory so had mine made to measure in person. The staff are ever so helpful and manufacture some of the worlds best leather / sheepskin jackets.
Definitely not machine washable. Because it’s an extreme cold weather coat it doesn’t really get very dirty. The outside leather can be wiped clean and conditioned as needed. The care would be along the lines of the filson tin cloth coat. Any soiled areas can be dried and than brushed off and if needed still, can be spot cleaned with a damp rag. But due to the self cleaning properties of wool I’ve never had to clean the inside and it has never gotten a smell to it. I’m not very familiar with saddle soap but I’m sure it would work just fine on the leather.
That poor coat has been trashed to the point that it breaks my heart. BUT it will take a beating and stay 💯 functional if that's all you care about. Great purchase!
I have a couple of sheepskin coats and I can say that, if you want to really do any work in them, they need to be loose as they do not give very much, especially in the shoulders.
Not true at all. I'm a geologist who works in the field 80% of the time; I hike, log drill cores, collect soil samples in remote locations, and load/unload equipment into field trucks in a sheepskin in the winter. Haven't worn through mine in 6 years.

Shearling is warmer than down I believe.

Great video! I love how you show the results of not babying your leather. All the scraping and dings makes that jacket look badass.
I got my first sheepskin coat, and it is awesome.
Where from?
@@kenshiroFNS Sheep
Can you please tell us where you got it please
this is a B-3 style bomber, or a RAF bomber. not an exact replica, but in the style of the old WWII bomber jackets
Sheepskin is pricy but worth it.
Not really, you can pick some cheap on ebay that are perfectly adequate.
Thanks for making this video! It is very helpful for me since I'm considering buying a sheepskin coat too.
I got one on a website and it's a bomber with a hood. They are awesome, gotta have it in the cold.
all sheepskins are suede but they turn some to NAPA leather thats what u got but when it crackles off it goes back to suede
Just got one for £101 on ebay ,the same sort if jackets are going for £300 to £1500 for the irvins cant wait for it to turn up

Thanks for including the measurements. Great jacket. Good deal.

Can these get wet? Rain 🌧️? Or snow ❄️ storm?
I picked one almost identical at a thrift store recently. You mentioned oiling it occasionally. What oil would you use on this?

What conditioner do you use on the outside of the coat to stop it cracking/wrinking/drying out?
Wow you got an insane deal!
I have debating between a 100% wool jacket vs a sheepskin. I read that wool keeps you warm even when it’s wet. Does sheepskin do the same?
I think you have a B3 jacket

Once in a while lol! Thin wool, cotton, linen & silk for summer.

I think I'll just use my A2, about one month a year.

does anyone know what oil to apply to a sheepskin that will transform the suede side of the sheepskin into the oiled finish that you can see in this video?
I read somewhere that hot wax is rubbed into the suede to smooth it out.
I just bought one made in Pakistan. I live in the USA. I hope it is nice and warm and tough.
