  • Rick Richards' wicked awesome solo in Keep Your Hands to Yourself is well worth studying. This is just one lick found in the solo in measure 35. Good idea to take one phrase like this and transpose it all over the neck, or more practically to the three tonal centers for a 12 bar blues. In this example we kept it in the key of A: so A, D, and E. Put it in every blues jam until you wear it out, to the point where it becomes automatic.
Figure learning stuff this way is a counter to the too much information age of internet music learning. Just pretend you're learning the lick off of the record (what a freakin' concept) and then make it your favorite thing to play until you painstakingly extract another lick from the record. Of course, getting the answers isn't always a bad thing (like in the video above) but a little struggle to hear and pick out parts from recordings is one of the main ingredients to building a musician, especially a guitarist in the rock/blues/jazz/country realm.
Thanks for looking. Give a LIKE and a comment too. Thanks
