No, the ancestry is not the same for siblings. Even in multiplies. We get 50% from our mother and 50% from our father, but we don’t get the same percentages from each parent. This is why siblings end up with different ancestry.

@@TheKatarinaGiselle No, the ancestry is exactly the same for full siblings, but the DNA numbers will likely be different. Your ancestry is related to who your biological siblings, parents, grandparents are etc while DNA relates to genetic parts of your DNA, which is interchangeable. I think you're getting ancestry and DNA confused.

Just 10 generations ago she had over 1000 grandparents in that generation alone, half male/female. One might have been from a family of slave owners. Many whites in USA have some 'black' DNA and vice versa. Obama's white mother was related to the first recorded slave in Virginia about 12 generations back. Go back far enough and any two people anywhere will have common ancestors, including us. Even morally (if not mentally) inferior Suppremists are related to the people they feel superior to.

Actually, a recent law passed in Canada. Adopted children that wanted to know about their biological parent have to wait 2 years after their death to know their names. So if they already died, they can find their biological family and know more about their ancestry tree. The problem with that law 113 is that the children of an adopted person who has died can't access the documents. If the parent was doing research to find about their parents, the child can't continue it.
So doing a DNA test is the solution for them. One woman was offer a DNA test by her husband and she found 117 family member!

Anyway, let's not even go down the road of potential hackers, theft or selling information.
Instead let's talk briefly about the future visions of the company. Anyone interested in the subject can go read more in-depth version of this all.
I'd love to believe that it's a company concerned with the wellbeing of humanity, but with a profit driven company, I have some doubts (and so should you).
The potential to do good is overwhelming, which is also the case for ruthlessly exploiting information in order to gain money and power.
There are a lot of "horror" scenarios that anyone could come up with, some more realistic than others.
-Pair this company with a drugmaker - Well, that has sort of already happened. GSK has exclusive rights to the data. Which means they're going to have a head start making drugs, and can decide the pricing. They are also a major investor in 23andme.
-Pair this company with the health care system, an insurance company, google etc etc - Too much to cover, but you can probably imagine where it could lead.

These kits frustrate me so much.
They usually come with a warning that say you should expect these tests to have 10% margin error. That's huge when you're dealing with DNA.
The tests also don't have a large pool of people that they are testing from. They just randomly select anywhere from 5-100 people in a reagon and assume they're ancestry isn't from somewhere else. It's a guess. These don't tell you where you're dna is from they tell you who it shares likeness with locals in those areas. It's not the same thing.
Any these companies know this. So people like my grandmother who is Native American end up with a ton of errors. In fact she has yet to get a test that had any results at all because of this problem.
Oh and these companies like 23andme and Ancestry tried to pass off not refunding her even though nothing came back.
I'm not saying it's completely wrong but you'll often see these people making videos and flipping out of .05% results because these companies pedal this tests like its and exact science...
To me these companies just seem like they're dishonest and really nothing but a cash grab.

What you said on how they test is completely false. I can't remember the exact but you could just google it but to be eligible to have your Dna used as a sample they compare to, that person must provide proof that something (I can't remember exactly how far back it was) like their great great or great grandparents were born and raised in the country that they are claiming to be from and all generations including the person themselves are born and raised in that country. If a person can provide proof to all of that then their Dna is eligible to be used as a sample to compare.

Your professor is correct, these companies sell your results!
This is known as the federal government let it slip that it had purchased access to such databases and are using them in criminal prosecutions. The case that brought it to light was the East Area Rapist, in which one such database was used to target a specific *family* because they matched close to the DNA taken from a rape site. Police then treated the whole family as suspect, collected DNA from all the members within and then matched these samples to the crime scene to narrow down exactly which one of the family members it was. While this can be seen as a 'noble use' of such databases, rape is a horrid crime, it highlights how easily Governments and Companies can acquire your whole families DNA from a single member using one of these services.
So you pay for the kit, and freely hand over your genome for whatever purposes the buyer wishes....

You have the same ancestry as long as you have the same parents, even if your dna doesnt show it.

    • @RexTheDinosaur1
      @RexTheDinosaur1 6 років тому +6

Well not necessarily. Because you only get half of your parents DNA to make your DNA. So you can end up not even getting any of the same things that your brother gets. Like say what are your parents is white and the other parent is white black Asian Polynesian and Native American. And you have a little brother you happen to be white and black Asian Native American. While your brother ends up being white Polynesian Native American and Asian. Now it doesn't mean that they're not related it just means that they don't have the same ancestry. Because ancestry is passed down but you only get half of the ancestry from your parents. And just because your parents are from there you can say oh yeah my ancestors are from there but I actually don't have any of that DNA in me. So you don't have that in sestri but you can prove that they were from there.

All 3 of our sisters look a little different but everyone can tell they are sisters. One has dark brown hair, one has reddish brown hair & the eldest sister has light brown hair. Our mother is Native American and a little Irish & our dad was half Native American & half Scandinavian but we're not sure which of the 3 Scandinavian countries his mother was from. Also basic xy. Kim got an x from her mom(that could be either from Kims grandma or grandpa on mother’s side)and an x from her dad (which is from his mother). Mitch’s x comes from the same source as Kim’s x but the y is passed exclusively down the male side. This is why brothers and sisters may look so different.

At 8:10 it is said that identical twins share 100% of their DNA. This statement is actually incorrect as identical twins DNA does have a small variant between person and they share about 98-99% of their DNA. The same goes for any identical, multiple fetus pregnancy

The gene breakdown appears to be: 5/8 white (British), 1/2 South Asian (Indian) and 1/8 East Asian (Chinese?). If their dad is white, this means their mom must be 1/2 Indian, 1/4 white, and 1/4 East Asian.

Skin tone results from a combination of genes(polygenic inheritance). For example a person with a genotype of aabbcc would have the lightest skin tone since don’t have any uppercase letters in their genotype. But, for a person of AaBbCc would have a mixed skin tone since they have a mix of the two skin tones. So if a person with AAbbcc and a person with aaBbCc would have the same skin tone even thought their genotypes differ. A person who is parents are black(AABBCC) and white(aabbcc) would make a child who is in the mid tone skin colour(AbBbCc). But if the child(AaBbCc) has children with someone who has a genotype of a AaBbCc then the possible offspring could be 25% full white,50% mid, and 25% black. This illustrates that not everything is cut clean skin colour is a result of which genes you got from your parents one child could have gotten this gene while another could have gotten something completely different.

Hello, I work with the company, and it’s part of my job to keep your data safe. If you choose to opt out of research, we will not use your data for anything. However, most people do choose for their DNA to be used for research. If you choose to have your DNA used, we are very careful to make sure that it cannot be traced back to you. All the data we use/give to third parties is aggregated. We are only giving away averages, for instance, we might say that many people with East Asian ancestry have a gene that makes them less likely to get skin cancer. 23andme has done a very poor job of letting the public know about how we use their data, and we are currently trying to find ways to remedy this.
