  • Another warm week in the cottage garden this week. I picked up some new bits for the garden, a bird bath, a mini apple tree and some new rambling roses. Also, I potted up my strawberry runners to get more free strawberry plants.

I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our summer has just barely started down here, and already we are on our FIFTH heatwave!! Temps sitting 32 degrees Celsius and higher......glory. But today, being Christmas day, 25 Dec 2023, I awoke to glorious heavy clouds and it has been raining steadily since about 6a.m! HALLELUJAH!!!!! Blessings to you and yours for Christmas, Catherine!

Hi Catherine, I love watching your videos on here. The reason I’m writing now is your new Eucalyptus.
I bought a similar size plant for the fragrance and the appearance in bouquets. I loved the shape of the leaves as well. This was before the internet! It started growing and we had planted it straight in our border. Anyway; because we left it to grow a bit more, we ended up with “Jack’s” beanstalk. I’m not kidding, it was huge; towering over our house. It seemed as though the taller it grew, the quicker the growth. Anyway, I know you will keep an eye on how tall it’s getting, but I couldn’t not write to you with my shiver of apprehensive feelings I had! Thanks so much for your channel, and much love to Miss Blondie as well. Xx

They can get huge, and do grow quickly. You can, however cut them back hard, and they will re-generate again. Actually, that how to get the best foliage from them as the newer growth if lovely, but the older they get the less unattractive it is. I used to grow several acres of all different kinds in my floristry days for weddings, hand tied bouquets etc., and they are a perfect plant. My favourite is The one that Catherine has just purchased. X

Hi there I've been watching your channel now for several years and I've seen the difference that you've made in your garden. It is just beautiful and Serene. I wish I could have a garden but I live in a retirement community and I really like it here so sometimes I do have some plants that flower so that's that's a nice thing to have instead of having a garden I guess. God bless you Catherine you're such an intelligent young woman and very resourceful and you are also very loving person when I look at you interacting with your family and even the hedgehog LOL 🤩💕💜🥳

Lovely additions to your garden. I love to watch the birds using the bird bath. I live in a bungalow much like yours, bathroom being downstairs. The outside pipe from bath to drain removes easily and I place a large trug underneath and use all the shower water for garden. Monty says this grey water is great for flowers but not edible plants. What with the drought and being on a water meter, it had saved a fortune. Enjoy your week 💖

Catherine, so many exciting things going on in your garden! I absolutely love that new birdbath! The climbing roses though just take me back and I'm a little jealous! We lived for one summer with my grandparents when my parents split and Gma had climbers at one end of her porch. The floor of the porch was concrete and I remember playing out there in the afternoons with the floor being cool and breezes blowing the smell of those lovely roses. I've never quite been able to recreate it but I got the vibes from your video! ❤ And btw, I hope you got some rose Turkish delight on your holiday. A former boss is Turkish and would bring it back for me when he'd visit his family.

I have a six foot arbor with New Dawn on one side and Dream Weaver one the other, built and planted in 1997. Last Spring when it was full of blossoms my arbor broke and I had to rebuild it, but it meant I had to drastically prune it...I did dry the rose petals. New dawn is a pale pink with darker center when it begins to open and then is almost white when fully open. Make sure you have a strong support, a trellis or arbor, it is a vigorous grower. Oh and the fragrance is lovely. Good luck.

It was a class pet and was so funny when picked up, a bit of hissing because usually we'd have woken him up. Once up and going, he enjoyed wandering around our classroom. :) Great haul from the garden shop!! You are going to LOVE your New Dawn climber!!! I had one in California and it was small like yours. I live in Michigan in the U.S. I catch rainwater for my flowers and veggies. We've been getting 2-3 weeks with no rain, then heavy downpours, so I have a LOT of rain catchers for those times. It usually is enough to last until the next rain. And rainwater is the best thing to water veggies with. Especially since I have city water and the rates are going up like crazy. Your flowers are all so beautiful, and your nature area in that corner is perfect. I'm seriously considering a small pond for next year.

Oh your back garden has come along so nicely! So refreshing to look at. 27C sounds like a dream to me, my favorite kind of summer weather. Here in New Hampshire, we had a long stretch of 90-95F days (32-35C), SO hot and humid and just miserable. Like Ireland and the UK, our houses here aren't built for that kind of heat. Central aircon is rare in houses. Most of us have window units which are better than nothing but NOT great. I grew up in the state of Virginia, and 32-35C is fairly common down that way, but homes come with central air conditioning. Our area just was just classified as being in "severe drought" -- it seems like the whole northern hemisphere has been this summer. Our trees still look green but starting to look tired and get the first signs of early fall color (nooooo!!!)...grass and clover is all very crispy, only crabgrass doing well. I try to plant native perrenials and they seem to still be doing ok except for milkweed which is covered in aphids (native plant which is the host plant for one of our famous butterflies, the Monarch). Finally, finally had some rain today. Thank you as always for sharing! Give Miss Blondie a head rub from me.

It’s been really hot and sunny here in Colorado as well! My squash are growing so well and my dahlias are doing alright. My gladioli are the ones I feel bad for. The leaves are so crispy

My son works at a Deli & a friend of his brought a pet hedgehog in to see. Evidently it is real tame. LAD.

Hi, I love to watch your videos 😊 I also have annabell hydrangeas and they are in full sun all the time. I planned them in an "acidic" soil and covered with bark to keep the moisture in the soil. When it is very hot I water them everyday in the morning before they are covered with the sun and again at evening and the soil around them also, like a full water can for one. 😊

I have a hydrangea that is in a southwest facing garden (very shaded, Southern Hemisphere) and I read that they prefer morning sun then shade in the afternoon

I love your new birdbath!! So pretty!! I sweat like crazy outside doing nothing at all! Your garden is lovely. Sounds like you might need to cover the cabbages since other's said the bugs will get them, and that would not be good!! Blondie is so pretty!!!

Our veggie garden fried, and we watered constantly since we aren’t on a water ban🥵😢
And like you we are discovering our hydrangeas have to be moved to the front where we only get morning to about noon sun
